Jokic stars in Nuggets win
Nikola Jokic's stellar performance led the Denver Nuggets to a 111-108 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers in an NBA In-Season Tournament game. Jokic contributed 32 points, 16 rebounds, and nine assists, showcasing his all-around skills. The Clippers, who have been winless since acquiring James Harden last month, suffered their fifth consecutive loss despite Harden's 21-point effort. Paul George also had a strong game with 35 points, but it wasn't enough to secure a win for Los Angeles. NTA notes farmers’ shift from tobacco to corn
The National Tobacco Administration said many tobacco farmers have shifted to corn since the pandemic, lowering tobacco production and encouraging crop diversification. Belinda Sarmiento-Sanchez, NTA administrator, told the Daily Tribune last Friday “the tobacco industry has been struggling to some extent since the pandemic due to more palpable health concerns associated with nicotine.” While she did not specify the number of farmers who have left the tobacco industry, the NTA reported tobacco production plunged to 50 million kilograms between 2019 and 2022 from after a record-high of 85.4 million kilograms in 2010. Currently, Sanchez said there are 2.3 million tobacco workers across the supply value chain, from planting to marketing, and 42,000 of them are small-scale farmers. Plant other crops Michael Tan, head of the agriculture group of the Private Sector Advisory Council, said tobacco farmers should plant other crops to increase their incomes during the other months outside the tobacco season which runs from November until January in Northern Luzon. “The industry faces numerous challenges on a global scale issues like changing consumer preferences, health concerns and evolving societal attitudes toward tobacco have shaped the landscape of the industry. It is imperative to acknowledge these challenges,” he said. Rohbert Ambros, NTA department manager, said there are now low-nicotine tobacco products in global markets. However, he stressed the majority of Filipinos are still unfamiliar with them. Market not aware of low-nicotine products “The Philippine market is not yet aware of low-nicotine products. What we have now are the usual products. But I guess, based on the research of NTA, whether low or high nicotine, anything that burns is dangerous to our health,” he said. With the shift in lifestyle of Filipinos, Sanchez said NTA would be focusing on exporting tobacco leaves and products. Last year, the Philippines shipped tobacco products worth over $917 million, with the United States as the top market. George Barcelon, president of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the Philippines could benefit more from farming corn as it has a wide range of uses, including animal feed, and reduce prices of food products. “I would prefer corn which is primarily used as feeds for poultry and livestock. This can help mitigate inflation,” he said. The Philippines’s most imported product was cereal, followed by wastes from food industries and animal fodder, and edible preparations in the first quarter, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority. Meanwhile, its most exported item in the Southeast Asian region was tobacco. The post NTA notes farmers’ shift from tobacco to corn appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Groups cry foul over new MMDA riders policy
Some groups have blasted the new policy of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority that it will slap a P1,000 fine to motorcycle riders who are taking shelter under footbridges, flyovers and train stations during heavy rains, saying that the move is “inhumane.” The policy — now being implemented in Metro Manila — states that motorcycle riders taking shelter on open public infrastructures such as bridges, flyovers and footbridges will be considered as an obstruction violation. According to Bagong Alyansang Makabayan secretary general Renato Reyes Jr., the MMDA’s policy will be a bane to motorcycle riders, stressing that there is already an increase in motorcycle users because of the mass transportation shortage in the country. “Many are now using motorcycles due to the ongoing mass transport crisis, so there should be no penalties if riders choose to take shelter because of rains,” Reyes said. Meantime, PISTON president George San Mateo stressed that the MMDA policy is cruel, anti-poor and may be a source of corruption. “As a rider, the MMDA policy is harsh,” San Mateo said. “It may also become a money-making venture for corrupt traffic enforcers.” “Although I do not condone and tolerate obstruction on roads, this is not the solution to the problem,” he added. To recall, the MMDA said that it will not spare any violator even amid heavy pouring of rain or under the summer heat. Violators will be penalized with a fine amounting to P500, although the agency is already mulling to increase the penalty to P1,000. MMDA acting chairman Atty. Romando Artes said the new policy will begin once the agency will be able to determine the alternative parking or shelters for motorists. “Obstruction is the first penalty of P500, so as soon as we fix the system, particularly at gasoline stations, I think we will strictly enforce the issuance of tickets to violators,” Artes said, adding that MMDA is now closely coordinating with the operators of gasoline stations in putting up tents to shelter riders during inclement weather conditions. He also insisted that parking on the national highways is too dangerous for motorcycle riders to park as they can be hit by larger vehicles and parking for 30 minutes to one hour under the footbridge or flyover is also causing heavy traffic. Riders, though, expressed mixed reactions to the impending implementation of the prohibition to use the said area because they said it is really dangerous for them particularly at dawn. A rider who identified himself as Mario is supportive of the regulation because staying in the area for a long time will cause traffic gridlock but said riders have their way to find areas where they can stay while it is raining. He said the regulation is okay with him so they cannot be a source of traffic congestion during the rainy season while another one said in order to evade being soak in rain water, riders said they should be equipped with raincoats. Meantime, ride-hailing firms Grab and Joyride vowed on Tuesday to remind their riders to be wary of the new policy. Great Brown Hope
The entire nation erupted in celebration when Kai Sotto finally made his debut in the National Basketball Association Summer League. It was such a memorable performance. The 7-foot-3 Filipino posted six points, four rebounds, three blocks, and an assist in the Orlando Magic’s 88-71 defeat to the Portland Trail Blazers. Aside from washing away the bitterness from being benched in their first three matches against the Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, and New York Knicks, Sotto’s breakout performance could pave the way for him to land a two-way contract in the NBA. We, however, have to manage our expectations. The Filipinos’ road to the NBA is littered with tears, frustrations, and a lot of heartbreaks. Unlike the Chinese, Japanese, Iranians, and Koreans, no full-blooded Filipino has ever penetrated the NBA since its founding in 1946. Johnny Abarrientos came very close when he caught the attention of the Charlotte Hornets following Alaska’s grand slam season in 1996. In fact, the Hornets sent its international scout, Joe Bettancourt, to the country to watch the 5-foot-7 Abarrientos live and in action. Bettancourt was on the sidelines when Alaska battled Purefoods, hoping to give Abarrientos a 10-day contract that would have him replacing the injured Muggsy Bogues, the 5-foot-3 court general who ran the offense for Hornets coach Dave Cowens. Abarrientos, Bettancourt, and Alaska coach Tim Cone even had a “secret meeting” at the Manila Peninsula in 1997 to discuss the terms of Abarrientos’ contract and the possibility of him becoming the first Asian to play in the NBA. But it never happened. Cowens eventually pulled the plug on Bogues and sent him to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for BJ Armstrong, a 6-foot-2 playmaker who was part of the great Chicago Bulls squad that won three straight NBA titles. With Bogues gone, Abarrientos’s chance of making it to the NBA also vanished. Japeth Aguilar tried to revive the Filipinos’ NBA dream a decade later. After seeing action for Ateneo de Manila University in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines league, Aguilar moved to the United States to enroll at Western Kentucky University, a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I program that produced NBA players like Courtney Lee, Mitchell Robinson, and Jeremy Evans. But the 6-foot-9 Aguilar failed to adjust to the speed and physicality of American basketball that had him struggling in his two years with the Hilltoppers. Aguilar was invited to a two-day workout with the New Orleans Hornets but their scout, Don Sellers, said that he remained a “work in progress” and was not yet ready for the NBA. Then, he was drafted in the seventh round by the Santa Cruz Warriors in the NBA D-League but his run also didn’t last long as he was eventually relegated to being a practice player until he was waived. Aguilar’s Gilas Pilipinas teammates — Ray Parks and Kiefer Ravena — also tried their luck with the NBA but their journeys only brought them as far as the NBA D-League. Veteran international campaigner Jojo Lastimosa was spot on with his observation: In this time and age, making it to the NBA is harder than it used to be. It’s no longer height that matters, but the mentality, work ethic, international exposure, and overall skill set that are the most important. For Sotto to make it to the NBA, he has to develop a reliable outside shot and quicker feet that will make him deadly in pick-and-roll attacks and enable him to switch to smaller, faster players at the defensive end. He also has to spend a lot of time getting exposed to American basketball, where giants like Joel Embiid, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Nikola Jokic are shooting, running, attacking, and dribbling like skilled playmakers. Sotto is a generational talent. He is our only hope to break the solid walls of the NBA, where only 450 roster spots are available. If he doesn’t make it, maybe — just maybe — it’s time for us to abandon our NBA dream. The post Great Brown Hope appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Nuggets, Suns advance to NBA semis
Top-seeded DenNuggets squeezed home 112-109 against the Minnesota Timberwolves to complete a 4-1 series win while the fourth seeds Phoenix Suns wrapped up their series with the Los Angeles Clippers by the same margin with a 136-130 victory in Arizona. The Nuggets, who will face Phoenix in the conference semi-finals, were made to work hard for their win by a Timberwolves team who jumped out to an early 15-point lead in the first quarter before gradually being reeled in. Jamal Murray led the Nuggets scorers with 35 points while reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic bagged his second triple-double of the series with 28 points, 17 rebounds and 12 assists. Minnesota's Anthony Edwards missed a three-point attempt on the buzzer that would have forced overtime as the Timberwolves' season came to an end. Edwards finished with 29 points while Karl-Anthony Towns added 26. In Phoenix, Devin Booker erupted for 47 points while Kevin Durant poured in 31 points to spark the Suns to victory over the short-handed Clippers. The Clippers, missing the injured Paul George and Kawhi Leonard, fought bravely to lead by 10 early in the second half. But when Booker took over with 25 of 50 Phoenix points in a lopsided third quarter, the Clippers were left chasing the game. Los Angeles somehow managed to close to within two points with just under two minutes remaining before Durant settled Phoenix with a layup and two free throws to make the game safe. "Those guys don't stop fighting," Booker said of the Clippers afterwards. "That's been the story of the whole series. Even though they were down men, we knew they were going to bring it." Sixers sweep Nets to advance, Suns on brink as Heat burn Bucks
The Philadelphia 76ers shrugged off the absence of Joel Embiid to complete a 4-0 sweep of the Brooklyn Nets in the NBA playoffs on Saturday as the Phoenix Suns edged closer to a second-round berth by beating the Los Angeles Clippers. The Sixers advanced to an Eastern Conference semi-final showdown against either Boston or Atlanta with a dominant second-half display to seal a 96-88 victory in Brooklyn. Elsewhere in the East, the Miami Heat thrashed the short-handed Milwaukee Bucks 121-99 to edge ahead of the top seeds 2-1 in their best-of-seven series. In Brooklyn, the Sixers trailed by 11 points early in the third quarter but transformed the contest with an 18-4 run to take the lead before closing out victory with a fourth-quarter rally. The Sixers' win was all the more impressive given the absence of star center Embiid, who suffered a right knee sprain in Thursday's 102-97 victory in game three. Embiid led the NBA with 33.1 points a game and is a finalist for the NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. Paul Reed stepped in to fill the void and finished with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Tobias Harris led the scoring for Philadelphia with 25 points and 12 rebounds, while De'Anthony Melton came off the bench to produce 15 points and lead the fourth-quarter surge. Harris said the Sixers were determined to use Embiid's absence as a motivator. "He's the MVP. And when we heard he wasn't playing, I think it was an opportunity for everybody else to really step up and understand that we've got to get a win without the big fellow," Harris told the TNT television network. "The whole group came together today. It's a great win for us and a great way to sweep the series." Asked what his message to the injured Embiid would be, Harris replied: "Hurry up and get your ass back out here." The 4-0 series victory was Philadelphia's first playoff sweep since 1991. Spencer Dinwiddie led Brooklyn's scoring with 20 points while Nic Claxton had 19 points with 12 rebounds. "Getting swept is trash," a dejected Claxton said. "It's not a good feeling." Suns on the brink In Los Angeles, Kevin Durant finished with 31 points, 11 rebounds and six assists to help Phoenix beat the Clippers 112-100 for a 3-1 series lead. Devin Booker plundered 30 points and veteran Chris Paul added 19 in a late burst of scoring as Phoenix bagged their second straight win in Los Angeles. "I'm in a good place and I'm enjoying playing ball," Durant said. "I've been out a few months this season, and I'm just happy I'm out here where the ball is." It means the Suns need just one more win to book their place in the Western Conference semi-finals, with game five set for Phoenix on Tuesday. The Clippers' hopes of squaring the series had been dealt a blow by the absence of Kawhi Leonard, who joined Paul George on the injured list. Russell Westbrook produced one of his best performances for the Clippers with a 37-point display. In Miami, the Heat took full advantage of the absence of Milwaukee's two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, leading by double digits much of the night. Jimmy Butler scored 30 points on 12-of-19 shooting before departing late in the third quarter after taking a hard fall. After visiting the locker room he returned to the bench but with the game in hand did not go back on the floor. Duncan Robinson scored 20 points and fellow reserve Kyle Lowry added 15 as the Heat bench delivered 59 points. "We just came out here and played with some intensity," Lowry said. The Heat will try to level the series on Monday, but Lowry said he knows they'll face a tough task. "Every game is a different game," he said. Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said the team would continue to "monitor" Antetokounmpo, who suffered a back contusion in game one, missed game two and was a late scratch on Saturday. In the late game the Memphis Grizzlies welcomed star guard Ja Morant back after a hand injury as they visited the Los Angeles Lakers with their series knotted 1-1. In later playoff games on Saturday, the Milwaukee Bucks travel to Miami looking for a win on the road over the Heat with the best-of-seven series finely balanced at 1-1. Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, who sat out game two after suffering a back injury in game one, was listed as questionable for Milwaukee. In the late game, the Memphis Grizzlies travel to Los Angeles to face the Lakers with their series knotted at one game apiece. Celtics’ Brogdon voted NBA sixth man
Boston Celtics guard Malcolm Brogdon was named NBA Sixth Man of the Year on Thursday as the league's top reserve. Brogdon, who was acquired in the offseason by the Eastern Conference champion Celtics, received 60 out of 100 first-place votes to edge New York Knicks guard Immanuel Quickley in voting for the award. "This is such an honor," Brogdon said in an interview with broadcaster TNT as the award was announced. "It's definitely been a transition for me, coming from Indiana to Boston. "But I'm with a great organization, I have great teammates, a great coaching staff." Brogdon became the second player to win both Sixth Man of the Year and Rookie of the Year, joining Mike Miller with that distinction. He was named Rookie of the Year in 2017. Before he was acquired by the Celtics Brogdon had started every game he played over the previous four seasons with the Indiana Pacers and Milwaukee Bucks. This season he came off the bench in all 67 games he played, but said that playing behind Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown "proven All-Stars and soon-to-be All-NBA guys, it's been a good fit for me." Brogdon averaged 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game to help Boston finish the regular season with the second-best record in the league behind the Bucks.
