Lester Pimentel Ong: The ‘Iron Heart’ director is also a restaurateur
When action films came to a screeching halt around year 2000 because of piracy, then stuntman Lester Pimentel Ong bravely ventured into the food business. For him, it was like wading into untested waters. “Nagsimula ako sa (I started in) Rice-In-A box 23 years ago. I started in the film industry as a stuntman. Nakatrabaho ko si Victor Neri, sa mga films ni direk Toto Natividad. Nawala ‘yung raket namin sa stunts kasi nauso ‘yung piracy sa film. Humina ‘yung action film so wala kaming raket. (I worked with Victor Neri, in the films of director Toto Natividad. We lost our stunt jobs because film piracy became prevalent. Action films slowed down, so we didn’t have a job). With his P80,000 savings, he started his rice-in-a-box business at Masagana City Mall, in Pasay, recalled Ong during the opening of the ninth branch of Wangfu, his Chinese-Singaporean restaurant that’s been up for 11 years now. That small rice-in-a-box business now has more than 100 stores consisting of food carts and food stalls. “That business financed all of our other businesses, all our other restaurants,” said Ong proudly. A foodie, Ong was exposed to street food when he was a wushu athlete who represented the country in many competitions abroad. He reveled in the street foods of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Thailand. “I would go around to different places and tuwing may break kami, we would explore the street food market ng different countries. I fell in love with different kind of food, Asian food,” he said. Wangfu came about because, after shoots, “kapag late night, wala kaming makakainan. Nasa food business naman ako, so nagtayo kami ng restaurant sa Tomas Morato. Iyon ang first branch (of Wangfu),” he said. He was joined in the venture by business partner Ace Wang. Wangfu serves Singaporean cuisine like laksa, Hainanese chicken and salted egg fried chicken. From Sir Chief to Sir Chef Actor Richard Yap is also one of Ong’s partners in Wangfu. Yap disclosed that when he was young, he “used to cook at home because my mom cooks very well.” It was his love for food that drove him to study culinary arts. But he discovered along the way that cooking was not for him. “When I took up a culinary course, I found out na hindi pala para sa akin ang pagluluto (that cooking is not for me). Ang hirap ng preparations. It takes a long time. Kung ako ang magluluto (If I will do the cooking), it will take three to four hours if you do it by yourself,” he said. In college, Yap took up a pre-Med course, Medical Technology, for two years, and then stopped because his father asked him to take up Business Management instead. When he applied for Med studies at UST, he was told that he had to go back to first year again. “I said never mind. I’ll just finish my Business Management course at La Salle,” he recalled. Getting into showbiz 12 years ago was something that Yap didn’t see coming. “When I started out with “My Binondo Girl”, after that nagdadalawang isip ako (I had second thoughts). So, I had to ask around. One of my directors, direk Jeffrey Jeturian, said, ‘You know, you have to make a choice kasi it’s either you go full-time sa showbiz or not.’” Yap’s apprehensions were not without basis, since not a lot of people would make it at his age then, around 40. “Ako, sabi ko, late na ako (I’m late), wala pa akong experience. It would take me a lot of time to catch up with veteran actors and actresses,” he said. Fortunately, those around him told him he had a future in showbiz for as long as he persevered. And that he did — and now he’s Richard Yap, a popular actor and household name, forever remembered by many as Sir Chief of the blockbuster TV series Be Careful With My Heart. Netflix sends out last DVD
Streaming powerhouse Netflix mailed out its last DVD on Friday, ending service after 25 years that helped the company grow into an entertainment behemoth. Founder Reed Hastings has often said that he started the company in a pique of frustration with the Blockbuster rental store that charged him $40 for returning the movie Apollo 13 six weeks late. Out of that eventually came the idea for a subscription-based DVD-by-mail service that let the customer hold onto the title as long as they wanted. Once viewed, the DVD was slipped into a prepaid envelope and sent back to the company, with the subscriber's next choice sent on its way in exchange. "In 1998, we delivered our first DVD. This morning, we shipped our last," the company said on its website on Friday. "For 25 years, we redefined how people watched films and series at home and shared the excitement as they opened their mailboxes to our iconic red envelopes," the statement added. In April, when the decision to stop DVD rentals was announced, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said those "iconic" mailings "changed the way people watched shows and movies at home -- and they paved the way for the shift to streaming." On its site, the company said the mail service accumulated 40 million unique subscribers throughout its run, mainly in the United States. The streaming platform currently has 238 million subscribers worldwide. Netflix said that the first movie mailed out was the comedy Beetlejuice and that more than 5.2 billion DVDs have been sent out since then. The most-rented DVD was the US sports drama "The Blind Side" starring Sandra Bullock. That feel-good movie, about a white family that takes in a Black homeless child, was released in 2009 when the DVD service was at the height of its popularity. That movie has since proved controversial after the former NFL star and subject of the film Michael Oher said the portrayal was exaggerated and filled with inaccuracies. Barbie Forteza, David Licauco light up ‘Maging Sino Ka Man’
GMA’s hit stars Barbie Forteza and David Licauco of Maria Clara at Ibarra fame will bring back their sizzling chemistry to the television in Maging Sino Ka Man, the series adaptation of the ‘90s blockbuster hit of the same title and which catapulted Sharon Cuneta and Robin Padilla to new heights in their career back in the day. The highly anticipated romantic-action series will premiere 11 September and will run from Mondays to Fridays at 8 p.m. on GMA Telebabad and at 9:40 p.m. on GTV. It is directed by Enzo Williams (Ang Probinsyano). The Kapuso Primetime Princess and Pambansang Ginoo will play Monique and Carding, two very different people who fall in love with each other. It’s a rich girl-poor boy love story jampacked with action thrills and romance. The series also features Juancho Triviño as Gilbert Arnaiz, Faith Da Silva as Cleo Ramirez, Mikoy Morales (2023 Cinemalaya Best Actor) as Gordon a.k.a. Libag and Rain Matienzo as Tetay. Also part of the roster of its exciting cast are E.R. Ejercito as Boss Frank, Jeric Raval as Alex, Jean Saburit as Shonda, Juan Rodrigo as Miguel, Antonio Aquitania as Jonas, Jean Garcia as Belinda Salazar, Al Tantay as Osmundo and Tonton Gutierrez as George. At the most recent grand media conference, Williams described his experience directing the series as “not that hard.” “It’s not that challenging kasi ang galing nilang dalawa, to be honest. Working with Barbie, working with David — andiyan na ang chemistry nila eh, parang kaunting guidance na lang. So it’s not that hard,” he said. The director also expressed admiration for Forteza. “Barbie, I think she’s one of the best actresses I worked with.” This will definitely further amp the excitement among Forteza’s cult following as she will also play a male character in Maging Sino Ka Man. In the story, she also plays a dude named Dino as her disguise. For this, the actress studied Hilary Swank in Boys Don’t Cry, where Swank won an Oscar for her sensitive and complex role as a transman. This shows how serious Forteza is in her work for the series. Meanwhile, Licauco at the presscon admitted some challenges in his role as Carding, specifically the way the character talks as exemplified by Padilla in the hit movie: crass, crude and a thug. “As you know from the movie, mabilis magsalita si Carding. Matigas. As you can hear now, medyo mabagal talaga ako magsalita. I think iyon ang pinaka-challenging for me. But, of course, with the help of my director, I think…hopefully, nabigyan ko naman ng justice iyong character,” he replied to the question posted by a media member. Forteza also revealed that the series was created precisely for her and Licauco. “Personally, umeere pa lang Maria Clara at Ibarra, kumbaga napansin kami ng mga boss,” she said. “And they were already thinking of a follow-up project na para sa amin bilang artista. Sobrang fulfilling iyon, syempre. And kami (she and Licauco) naman po, in return, gagawin naman po ang best namin para mapaganda rin ang seryeng ito.” The creative team behind this 2023 remake of Maging Sino Ka Man is composed of creative director Aloy Adlawan; senior writers Benjamin Benson Logronio and John Kenneth de Leon; head writer Mark Duane Angos; brainstormer Louize Andrei Al-Shehri. Maging Sino Ka Man is made possible under the supervision of GMA senior vice president for Entertainment Group Lilybeth G. Rasonable; vice president for Drama Cheryl Ching-Sy; assistant vice president for Drama Helen Rose S. Sese; senior program manager Camille D. Hermoso; and executive producer Darling Pulido-Torres.
