US condemns latest attack on Cuban embassy
The United States on Monday condemned the latest attack on Cuba's embassy in Washington, in which a man allegedly threw two Molotov cocktails at the mission. The communist nation described the incident Sunday night as a "terrorist attack." No one was injured. "All attacks and threats against diplomatic facilities are unacceptable," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters. "We are in contact with Cuban embassy officials and, consistent with our obligations under the Vienna Convention, the department is committed to the safety and security of diplomatic facilities and the diplomats who work in them," he said. He said the State Department was coordinating with Washington police in the investigation. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez earlier wrote on social media that an individual threw two Molotov cocktails in the "terrorist attack." Ambassador Lianys Torres Rivera said the embassy had "immediately communicated with United States authorities, who were given access to the mission to take samples of the Molotov cocktails." The attack took place hours after Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel returned to Havana after attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York and other activities with Cubans in the US. In New York, Cubans had demonstrated against Diaz-Canel's presence at the UN, according to posts and videos shared on social media. "The anti-Cuban groups resort to terrorism when feeling they enjoy impunity, something that Cuba has repeatedly warned the US authorities about," said Rodriguez after Sunday's attack. It was the second attack against the Cuban mission in Washington in recent years, after a man opened fire on the building in April 2020. There were no injuries from that attack either. At the time, the Cuban foreign minister summoned the then-US charge d'affaires in Havana, Mara Tekach, to express his "energetic protest" over what he called a "terrorist aggression" against his embassy. That shooting left bullet holes in exterior walls and columns, broke a street lamp and damaged several panes of glass and moldings on the front of the building. US authorities arrested Alexander Alazo over the shooting, charging him with multiple offenses including "a violent attack on a foreign official or official premises using a deadly weapon," according to the US Justice Department. The Cuban embassy reopened as a full mission after a reconciliation bid by former US president Barack Obama. His successor, Donald Trump, backed by staunchly anti-communist Cuban Americans, reversed many of Obama's overtures. Molotov cocktails hit Cuban embassy
A man threw two Molotov cocktails at Cuba’s embassy in Washington on Sunday, according to the country’s foreign minister. Minister Bruno Rodriguez said in a post on X that no embassy staff was harmed in what he described as a terrorist attack. “The anti-Cuban groups resort to terrorism when feeling they enjoy impunity, something that Cuba has repeatedly warned the US authorities about,” Rodriguez said after the attack. The Sunday night attack took place hours after Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel returned to Havana after attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York and other activities with Cubans in the US. This was the second attack against the Cuban mission in Washington in recent years. A man opened fire on the embassy in April 2020 but no one was injured. That shooting left bullet holes in exterior walls and columns, broke a street lamp and damaged several panes of glass and moldings on the front of the building. US authorities arrested Alexander Alazo, then 42, for the attack. Alazo was indicted in July 2020 and charged with multiple offenses, including “violent attack on a foreign official or official premises using a deadly weapon,” according to the US Justice Department WITH AFP The post Molotov cocktails hit Cuban embassy appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Jumbo vessel calls at VICT
The Victoria International Container Terminal, or VICT, a unit of International Container Terminal Services Inc., or ICTSI, marked a significant milestone with the arrival of the super-sized ship, the M/V CMA CGM Pelleas, which docked at the Port of Melbourne. At 350 meters in length, the container vessel is the largest ever to dock in Australia. The ship is nearly 43 meters wide and has a carrying capacity of just under 10,000 TEUs. VICT’s chief executive officer, Bruno Porchietto, says that super-sized vessels like the CMA CGM Pelleas are likely to become more common at the VICT terminal. “There is a global trend by shipping lines toward the use of larger ships, which are more efficient due to their carrying capacity,” Porchietto said. Ship welcomed “We are very proud to welcome this ship as the largest yet to dock in Australia, and we are thankful to our client partners ANL and CMA CGM for their continued confidence in our facility. “It’s a strong signal of where the future lies for the Port of Melbourne and VICT — by the end of the year, our facility will be capable of docking two of these vessels or even larger simultaneously.” Porchietto says the VICT facility located at Webb Dock has significant advantages due to its location over the legacy terminals at Swanson Dock. “Because our operations sit at the entrance to the Port our facility can easily accommodate these larger vessels that are unable to sail further down into Melbourne’s Yarra River due to length and height restrictions.” The post Jumbo vessel calls at VICT appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
G77 summit seeks ‘new economic world order’
Leaders of 134 countries huddled in Havana, Cuba on Friday for their G77+China summit, looking to set up a new economic world order. The meeting should conclude Saturday with a statement underscoring “the right to development in an increasingly exclusive, unfair, unjust and plundering international order,” the foreign minister of the host country, Bruno Rodriguez, told reporters on Wednesday. United Nations chief Antonio Guterres, who is attending the summit that concludes Saturday, raised concern over the multiplicity of summits ahead of the Friday meeting. “Multipolarity could be a factor for escalating geostrategic tensions, with tragic consequences,” he warned. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said on X, formerly Twitter, that the summit participants would “reaffirm our commitment to multilateralism, cooperation and development.” WITH AFP The post G77 summit seeks ‘new economic world order’ appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Colombia deadliest country for green activists in 2022
Environmental activist murders doubled in Colombia last year, making it the most dangerous country in the world for those trying to protect the planet, a watchdog said Tuesday. In its annual review, Global Witness named 177 land and environmental defenders who had been killed in 2022 -- from the Amazon to the Philippines and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Latin America again bore the brunt of the murders, including 39 killings across the vast Amazon rainforest, a vital carbon sink facing widespread destruction at a time when the world is grappling to curb climate change. The number of those killed has progressively decreased since a record 227 in 2020, however, "this does not mean that the situation has significantly improved," said Global Witness. "The worsening climate crisis and the ever-increasing demand for agricultural commodities, fuel, and minerals will only intensify the pressure on the environment -– and those who risk their lives to defend it," warned the London-based watchdog. While in 2021 most killings took place in Mexico, Colombia last year surged ahead with 60 deaths -- more than a third of all the murders globally. "This is almost double the number of killings compared to 2021 when 33 defenders lost their lives," said the report. Many of those targeted were Indigenous people, members of Afro-descendant communities, small-scale farmers, and environmental activists. At least five children, three of them Indigenous, were among the global tally. "Yet there is hope," said the NGO, praising efforts under new leftist President Gustavo Petro to boost protection for defenders -- a first in the country. Colombian sociologist and activist Nadia Umana, 35, fled her northern home after the murders of four colleagues, all of whom had been fighting for the return of rural lands taken over by paramilitaries. "Knowing that a colleague of yours was murdered is an indescribable pain," Umana told AFP in Bogota. Even the country's vice-president, Francia Marquez -- the 2018 winner of the prestigious Goldman environmental prize -- has faced multiple threats. In 2019, she survived an attack by gunmen who tried to kill her over her work defending her home region's water resources against mining companies. Mining, logging, farming According to Global Witness, almost 2,000 land and environmental defenders have been murdered over the past decade -- some 70 percent of them in Latin America. In Brazil, where British journalist Dom Philips and Indigenous expert Bruno Pereira were killed last year in the Amazon, a total of 34 land defenders were killed. Mexico, Honduras, and the Philippines also had high numbers. Global Witness said that while it was "difficult to identify" the exact drivers for the killings, 10 were found to be linked to agribusiness, eight to mining, and four to the logging industry. Aside from activists, state officials, demonstrators, park rangers, lawyers, and journalists are also among those who lost their lives. "All of them shared a commitment to defend their rights and keep the planet healthy. All of them paid for their courage and commitment with their lives," said the report. Gilas heartbreakers
The FIBA World Cup games have begun with an opening night of flag-waving, music-filled entertainment proudly showcasing our much-heralded love for singing and dancing. And for the next two weeks, basketball fanatics will be focused on the best of the best hoopsters in the world. Political leanings will be set aside and diplomatic disagreements among competing nations momentarily ignored by 32 countries bannered by a record number of 55 NBA players amicably but surely passionately battling for national pride on the hardcourts of Manila, Jakarta and Okinawa. Undoubtedly, the Philippines has prepared long and hard. Undoubtedly, our Gilas pool of an exciting combination of youthful and seasoned cagers possessed finally with enough height, girth, and basketball savvy to be internationally competitive have stepped up and put their individual professional careers on hold for the opportunity to don the colors of the country. Undoubtedly, MVP, the godfather and financial backer of SBP, has done his utmost best to deliver for the Filipino people the much-cherished dream of returning our basketball team to the Olympics by topping other Asian countries in the World Cup. Undoubtedly, the Filipino fans have continued to pour their hearts out for Gilas, desperately hoping for the much-fantasized victories over the top teams of the world starting with the higher-ranked countries in our group, namely, #10 Italy and #23 Dominican Republic versus our #40 rank. And certainly, a win against lower-ranked #41 Angola would not be an outsized expectation. So, what has happened so far? As of this writing, I must say that, surely, like millions of our countrymen, my heart is utterly heartbroken. Why? Two Gilas games have just been concluded and much to our lament, although we still have one more game to play against Italy, our aspirations for moving up to the second round of 16 have been shattered for all intents and purposes. We still have a long shot for a Hail Mary miracle if the Dominicans beat the Angolans, our tormentors in the second game of Gilas, and IF we beat Italy. This slimmest of slim scenarios will have Gilas tied with Italy and Angola at one win and two losses each, which will have to be settled on point differentials. We first lost to the Dominican Republic 87- 81 in a tightly contested match-up. Our team stood toe to toe against NBA star Karl Anthony Towns, an unstoppable behemoth every time he drove in on his strong side against the defenses of AJ Edu and our own man mountain June Mar Fajardo. Both defenders nevertheless stood out with their steady shooting and defensive efforts. The first game against the Dominicans, to the credit of our undersized team, was a nip-and-tuck affair all throughout that could have gone either way until our scoring machine, NBA star Jordan Clarkson, fouled out with about three minutes left. Without Clarkson to respond to Towns, the game of Gilas quickly unraveled and the outcome became inevitable. The game against Angola started and ended quite differently. With dimming hopes for moving up to the next round, Gilas ferociously came out strong, even leading by as many as 11 points in the second quarter. Clarkson’s shooting, however, was not as sharp, hitting only 32 percent compared to his 38 percent clip against the Dominicans and Gilas’ penchant for turnovers continued to hurt. By the start of the fourth quarter, Angola took control and never looked back. Some lessons to be learned. No matter how great a player Clarkson is, other players will have to step up more consistently. Basketball after all is and will always be about team play. Fajardo was marvelous in the Dominican game but couldn’t maintain his strong play in the match-up against Angola’s NBA Atlanta Hawks center, Bruno Fernando. On the other hand, Edu, Dwight, and Pogoy showed intermittent flashes of brilliance but lacked game-long consistency. The much heralded Kai Sotto, perhaps through no fault of his own since he was denied sufficient playing time to show his stuff, was flat and didn’t really wow the crowd. But perhaps the biggest question asked by basketball pundits is if coach Chot Reyes is up to par compared to the brilliant bench tactician Tab Baldwin who unexpectedly stepped down as Gilas coach. Until next week… OBF! *** For comments, email bing_matoto@yahoo.com. The post Gilas heartbreakers appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Taylor Sheeeesh! It’s not a moment, it’s a movement!
What started out as a “campaign” to encourage Taylor Swift to include the Philippines to her The ERAs Tour has morphed into its own thing. When Taylor Sheesh’s shows at Glorietta 4 and Trinoma immediately went viral, getting international media coverage, even international Swifties thought if anyone deserved a tour date just for sheer enthusiasm and verve, it was the Philippines. Alas, it was not to be. There were unsubstantiated rumors that Taylor’s team really wanted to come but our infrastructure was just not up to it. Just the logistics of Taylor jumping and swimming into a “pool”, a signature of the ERAs tour, seemed formidable. The challenges that have come to the fore with the recent Bruno Mars concert held at the Philippine Sports Arena also saw massive traffic jams and certain concertgoers only seeing the last two songs of Bruno Mars, if at all. When Taylor Swift added dates to the Singapore leg of her tour, it was largely thought to be a concession to Philippine fans, but the additional costs of plane fare and accommodation to already steep concert tickets still make it fairly inaccessible to most. And even if you can afford it, getting tickets is largely a lottery, as Swifties virtually flocked to Klook. As of this writing, all tickets to the Singapore concert have already been sold out. Enter Taylor Sheesh. Mac Coronel’s Taylor Sheesh have Pinoy Swifties flocking to his performances, which they have come to appreciate for their own thing, instead of a means to an end. Now, as Taylor Sheesh keeps adding shows, getting an honest-to-goodness tour of her own, local Swifties finally came to love the one they have. The post Taylor Sheeeesh! Rioting costs France damages worth over 1B euros
Days of violent protests in France cost more than one billion euros in damage to businesses ransacked by rioters. The government had by Tuesday counted attacks on 10 shopping malls, 200 supermarkets, 60 sporting goods shops, almost 440 tobacconists and 370 bank branches since 27 June. Geoffroy Roux de Bezieux, head of employers’ organization Medef, said in an interview with the Parisien daily on Monday that the figure excludes cost to tourism. President Emmanuel Macron suggested Tuesday that the “peak” of rioting “has passed” but Abdelhamid Faddeoui, head of Aetos Private Security based near Paris, said “everyone is afraid that this is just a false calm” and “most of my clients are keeping up a high level of security.” Joseph Guret, whose tobacco shop outside Paris was gutted, complained that he has nothing left. The 30-year-old shop owner said his tobacconist in Neuilly-sur-Marne was attacked by 10 people on Thursday night who “took everything they could” and then “burned everything.” With some shop owners talking about going out of business in the wake of attacks, Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire has vowed government aid and pushed insurers and banks to help out. “When your shop has been totally burned down, when your whole life’s work is turned to ash, the state has to be there by your side,” he said Tuesday, promising “case-by-case cancellations of tax and social charges for the worst-affected shopkeepers.” France Assureurs president Florence Lustman told broadcaster Franceinfo that 5,800 claims had reached insurers, worth “at least 280 million euros” — significantly higher than France’s three-week riots in 2005, which totalled 204 million. Daniel Baal, general manager of cooperative bank Credit Mutuel Alliance Federale, said his firm would offer affected businesses holidays from loan payments or short-term overdrafts to get through the toughest times. The rioting, sparked by the killing of 17-year-old Nahel during a police traffic stop in a Paris suburb on 27 July, saw the interior ministry deploy 45,000 officers overnight backed by light armored vehicles and crack police units to quell the violence. Last photos of Amazon murder victims Phillips, Pereira found
The last photos of murdered British journalist Dom Phillips and Brazilian Indigenous expert Bruno Pereira, who disappeared a year ago in the Amazon rainforest, have been found on a cell phone recovered in the jungle. The pictures, shown in a documentary about the men's lives and work that premiered Friday, were taken in the hours before Phillips and Pereira were killed on 5 June 2022 -- a crime that triggered international outcry and drew attention to the lawlessness fueling the destruction of the world's biggest rainforest. Investigators say Phillips, 57, and Pereira, 41, were shot by a group of illegal fishermen in what appeared to be retaliation for Pereira's work fighting environmental crimes in the far-flung Javari Valley Indigenous reservation, in northern Brazil. The pictures were recovered by an Indigenous patrol team that Pereira had trained to protect the reservation from illegal gold miners, loggers and poachers. The patrol from Indigenous-rights group UNIVAJA, which played a crucial role in helping the authorities find the men's remains, continued searching for clues in the region in the months after the double murder. The documentary, produced by streaming service Globoplay, shows the search team using a metal detector to sweep the area where the remains were found, which had been covered in water during the rainy season. Working painstakingly in the muck, they managed to dig up Phillips's notebooks and press card, then found Pereira's phone -- potentially a key piece of evidence. The mud-encrusted phone, recovered in October, was given to forensics experts to extract the images and data. The last picture, taken the morning the men were killed, shows Phillips sitting in a small boat on the Itaquai river, one of the brown waterways that snake across the region, speaking with a local resident near shore. There are also videos of one of the three suspects currently on trial in the case, local fisherman Amarildo "Pelado" Costa de Oliveira, crossing paths with Phillips and Pereira as he traveled down the river. Indigenous patrol members said Oliveira had threatened them a day before the killing. Pereira had received repeated death threats for his work. UNIVAJA leaders said they hoped the images would help bring justice to the case. The post Last photos of Amazon murder victims Phillips, Pereira found appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
