UAAP: Ateneo marches forward to solo second after mowing down NU

Even after a loss to open the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament, Ateneo de Manila University still stands in the top two of the standings. Drawing contributions from up and down the roster, the Blue Eagles dominated National University from start to finish for a 72-46 rout on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum. Thirdy Ravena and Matt Nieto didn’t even have to do much in terms of scoring as the defending champions got much welcome contributions from the likes of Mike Nieto and Adrian Wong in their second straight win following a season-opening loss. Ravena still top-scored with 13 points, but only had to play 13 minutes while Matt Nieto just had two points in 16 minutes. That didn’t prove to be a problem as Mike Nieto and Wong each scored seven points while Anton Asistio also added nine markers. The balance extended to the other end as well as Ateneo allowed no more than 16 points in each and every quarter. “I thought our defense was the way we wanted it to be. There’s no excuse to not play that way after this,” head coach Tab Baldwin said. In fact, the defense was so suffocating that Bulldogs’ super rookie Dave Ildefonso, averaging 17.5 points in the first two games, only had four points in this one. All in all, they only allowed their opponents to make good on 18 of their 65 attempts. With that end-to-end dominance, the Blue Eagles separated themselves from the pack and seized solo second in the standings. “When we get that defensive effort, we can be a prospectively hard team to bet,” coach Tab said. Trending in the opposite direction are the Bulldogs who were dealt back-to-back defeats following a season-opening win. Enzo Joson was the lone player in double-digits for them with 11 points. UAAP: Coach Tab wants Dave Ildefonso to rethink going to NU

Is it wrong to grant a second chance? Or should one's decision be final? After a 72-46 thrashing by defending champs Ateneo Blue Eagles against the NU Bulldogs, head coach Tab Baldwin is asking NU rookie Dave Ildefonso to reconsider his move to Sampaloc and back to the confines of Katipunan. Ildefonso, a key member of the Blue Eaglets squad that triumphed over the NU Bullpups in the UAAP Season 80 juniors' basketball tournament earlier this year, made the move to the school where his dad, Danny, rose from an unknown probinsyano to being the greatest product the school has ever produced. Baldwin made it known at the post-game presser that the highly-sought recruit was courted heavily by his former alma mater, but to no avail. "I think that we wanted Dave to rethink that decision or perhaps in hindsight, wonder why he made that decision,": the American-Kiwi coach shared. The mentor then added that the win was a statement not only for Ildefonso, but to all recruits the school are scouting. "And we want that next recruit that it's in that position to remember today. And we'll continue to put performances on the court that hope for all of our recruits to take note. And think that this is the right place to be. Because they don't want to be on the other side." For the rookie Ildefonso's part, who joined his older brother, Sean in his move from Katipunan to Sampaloc, an opportunity to immediately shine was the ultimate reason why he left Ateneo. "I really want to play. So yung nakita ko sa Ateneo, it's a stacked lineup. Naisip ko na I won't be able to play, have a lot of minutes after two years, so pinag-isipan ko na I really need the exposure and siguro I didn't want to get that exposure from playing Team B, ganoon," the forward said in a previous interview at the ABS-CBN Sports office. "I really didn't want that. Sa tingin ko, I didn't really want to become a bench player."   __   Follow this writer on Twitter, @philipptionary.     .....»»

UAAP: NU s Dave I: I think I made the right decision, Coach Tab

After averaging 17.5 points in his first two games in the UAAP Seniors, Dave Ildefonso was shackled down to just four points on Saturday. “Lakas ng katawan ni Thirdy [Ravena] e. Maganda yung game plan talaga nila,” he told reporters post-game after National University succumbed to Ateneo de Manila University, 46-72. Of course, Ildefonso’s worst game thus far in the Seniors had to come against Ateneo, the very same school he left. As it turns out, the Blue Eagles really saw to that. “I think that we wanted Dave to rethink that decision,” head coach Tab Baldwin in an earlier interview. For the past three years, Ildefonso had worn the blue and white as a Blue Eaglet and in his last season there, won a championship. And so, Katipunan’s Seniors squad did its all to keep the graduating players from that championship core – Ildefonso, SJ Belangel, Jason Credo, Joaqui Manuel – together. Only Belangel and Credo stayed in Ateneo, however, while Ildefonso and Manuel transferred to NU and De La Salle University, respectively. Even so, Ildefonso said he has no regrets about his transfer. “I don’t think I made the wrong decision in switching schools. Whatever statement they were sending me, I didn’t get it,” he said after being told about Coach Tab’s words. The super rookie went on to re-emphasize that he wanted to make an immediate impact for whichever team he was joining – and he wouldn’t have been able to do that with the fully loaded defending champion Blue Eagles. “Isipin mo, si SJ, limited minutes. Kung nag-stay ako dun, mas lalo na ako, mas limited,” he shared. He then continued, “I think I made the right decision, Coach Tab, and I’ll see you soon.” Looking at the stat sheet, Belangel, the top senior of the most recent graduating class, only played 12 minutes for Ateneo. Still, Ildefonso made it clear that he harbors no ill will towards his former school. Asked if he’s looking forward to the next NU-Ateneo matchup, he answered, “I’m not thinking about that. I’m just thinking about Adamson next and trying to bounce back.” Indeed, all that’s on the mind of the 18-year-old is moving forward from his four-point performance. “Part din naman ‘to ng (buhay) ng athletes, ups and downs. Babawi naman talaga ako,” he said. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

UAAP: Coach Tab upset over inappropriate refereeing vs Ateneo

Coach Tab Baldwin expressed his disappointment over how the referees handled the game during the low points of Ateneo's blowout win over NU at the Araneta Coliseum Saturday evening. Baldwin implied that the three-man crew was partial towards the trailing Bulldogs, who were down by as much as 27 in the contest. He stated examples of the supposed bias of the three referees, who allegedly let NU give out excessive contact with the Blue Eagles players.  "I'd like to know why the foul count skews considerably when you have a big lead. I'd like to know why players are allowed to push off, when we're denying them the basketball for full court throughout the game," the former Gilas Pilipinas coach said after the game. "And they warned us for flopping. I'd like to know what is the rationale in the referee's minds to change the way they referee because the score changes. And those are questions somebody should answer." The mentor however clarified that what the referees did was out of a culture, something that he has consistenly seen in his 35-year coaching career.  He then added that that kind of officiating must not stoop down to the collegiate level. "You should referee on the possession, on the merits of the possession. And nothing else. If there's any other agenda working in referee's minds, it's inappropriate. Baldwin made it known that he was not happy, even though they got the win, and hopes that things will called right down the middle.   "[I]t annoys the hell out of me. Obviously, I'm sitting here like I should be happy, but I'm pissed off." __ Follow this writer on Twitter, @philipptionary.   .....»»

From G League to GM, 76ers turn franchise over to Brand

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — Only two years out of the NBA, Elton Brand is set to return to the league as a 39-year-old general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers. For a franchise that underwent the painful “Process” for a few seasons and had its last GM caught up in a Twitter scandal, a youth movement in the front office could be what the Sixers need to take the next step into Eastern Conference contention. Brand is ready to help lead the way. “I’m going to rely on my team,” Brand said. “Not just on the court, but the off-the-court team. I can’t keep saying it enough. In my opinion, we are one of the top groups in the NBA.” Brand was introduced Thursday at the Sixers complex as the new GM, and it was made clear the two-time All-Star will not yield the power to make the final decisions, but rather work in concert with coach Brett Brown and the rest of the front office. “The 76ers are on the cusp of something very special and the next 12 months are really important,” Brand said. “I think that’s why I was the leading candidate, to bring stability to the organization and this group that I know really well.” Brand had worked for the Sixers as vice president of operations and was the general manager of the Delaware Blue Coats, the 76ers’ G League affiliate. Sixers owner Josh Harris said Brand emerged from a list of at least 10 candidates as the right choice to steady a franchise rocked by Bryan Colangelo’s sudden departure. Colangelo resigned in June as the 76ers’ president of basketball operations after what an investigation concluded was “careless and in some instances reckless” sharing of sensitive team information on Twitter. “I’ll lead with honesty, integrity,” Brand said. Brown had assumed interim GM duties but wanted no part of holding the job full time. But he will work as Brand’s partner in key decisions the franchise faces coming off a 52-win season. “Coach and I are aligned,” Brand said. “Teams that have won in the NBA, the GM, the coach have to get along. He’s going to have the players. But when it comes to trades, draft process, I’m running that. That’s what I’ve been hired for. Final say? Coach is going to have a voice in it.” Brand played in 1,058 career games over 18 seasons with the Bulls, the Los Angeles Clippers, Dallas, Atlanta and two stints with the Sixers. He posted career averages of 16 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two blocks per game. A two-time All-Star and the 2000 co-rookie of the year, Brand was also the recipient of the 2005-06 Joe Dumars Trophy, presented each season to the player who exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship on the court. “I think we’re at a new point in our team’s development into hopefully an NBA championship,” Harris said. “We need to be attracting talent here. Certainly, Elton’s image and who he is as a person were real positives. But leadership and managerial skills and the things you’ve got to do in the front office that aren’t just about image, he’s got those, too. But certainly, that was a huge positive.” Brand said it’s fair to question his inexperience as he skyrocketed through the organization from the G League to GM. But it’s a job he’s ready to handle. “I’ll take the hits,” he said. “When there’s decisions made on the basketball side, I’m taking the hits.” Alex Rucker was promoted to executive vice president of basketball operations. Ned Cohen will remain assistant general manager and Marc Eversley will stay as senior vice president of player personnel. The Sixers beat Miami in the first round of the playoffs before they were eliminated in the conference semifinals by Boston. Under Brown’s watch, Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons have blossomed into two of the top young players in the league. Embiid and Markelle Fultz were among the players who attended Brand’s press conference. The Sixers were stunned when an independent review found that Colangelo’s wife, Barbara Bottini, operated four Twitter accounts. She admitted using private information to criticize the Sixers and rival colleagues. Brand, the fourth black GM in the NBA, is ready for the Sixers to put the offseason mess behind them and make a jump in the East. “This is a special team, an incredible opportunity, and we will lead a disciplined and determined path to building a championship organization,” he said......»»

UAAP: UP protests loss to Ateneo

The University of the Philippines is urging the UAAP to put its loss to Ateneo de Manila University under review. “We write to officially protest and implore action against what transpired during the UP vs Ateneo game,” Fighting Maroons team manager Atty. Agaton Uvero said in a letter forwarded to UAAP Season 81 Executive Director Atty. Rebo Saguisag on Tuesday. He then continued, “The UAAP must do something about this not because we lost. Losing is part of the game, but unfairness and bad officiating (are) certainly not. Nobody wins when bad calls or non-calls be game officials are not rectified and allowed to continue.” The development was first reported by Mark Giongco of inquirer.net. A week ago, the Blue Eagles downed the Fighting Maroons, 87-79. In particular, State U pointed out an instance of “unfair” officiating when no foul was called on Ateneo’s William Navarro during a dunk attempt of Nigerian powerhouse Bright Akhuetie in the final frame. That non-call was blasted by head coach Bo Perasol right then and there and that led to his ejection. With that, he incurred an automatic one-game suspension to be served in their next assignment. According to a source, however, the letter is not an official protest of the result of the game, but more of a call for the league to review the refereeing. “It’s really not an official protest. It’s more of a letter from the management with a hope na ma-overturn yung ejection ni coach Bo leading to a one-game suspension,” the source said. Indeed, UAAP house rules state that for an official protest, a team captain should sign his name on the stat sheet right after the game in question. A recent example would be what College of St. Benilde skipper Yankie Haruna did following their close loss to San Sebastian College-Recoletos in the NCAA Season 94. UP also questioned officiating after they only had seven shots from the free throw line compared to the defending champions’ 31. For Ahkuetie, however, that just meant that the Fighting Maroons were not as aggressive as their opponents. “We barely attacked the paint, straight up. (Also, I was) shooting threes,” he said while chuckling post-game. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
