Libero Jen Reyes set to join former NU teammates at Foton

While University of Sto. Tomas had its mini reunion with Petron, former and current National University players are setting their own with the Foton Tornadoes. Seasoned libero Jen Reyes bolted out of the Tri-Activ Spikers to join her former Lady Bulldogs teammates Dindin Santiago-Manabat, Jaja Santiago and Ivy Perez at Foton. The two-time Philippine Superliga Grand Prix champion Tornadoes lost most of their core players including their pair of defensive specialists Bia General and Kara Acevedo after their contracts expired. The Santiago sisters, Perez, EJ Laure and Maika Ortiz are the only holdovers of the team. Jaja Santiago and Laure of UST are unavailable for the Invitational Conference that will open next month because of their commitments with their respective schools.    And the acquisition of Reyes is the start of the team’s rebuilding process. The multi-awarded libero played for Petron for three seasons after transferring from Cignal, helping the Tri-Activ Spikers capture the 2014 Grand Prix and 2015 All-Filipino Conference – a historic 13-0 tournament sweep – crowns.  'Pinakamahirap na desisyon ay magpaalam sa Petron family ko. I spent the last three years of my career sa Petron. We won together, we lost together, para na kaming pamilya,” said Reyes. “But now it’s time for me to face a new challenge. Looking forward ako sa bagong chapter ng buhay ko ngayon.” Reyes has an impressive resume making her a prized defensive gem for any team. The libero has played in numerous international tournaments including consecutive appearances in the AVC Asian Women's Club Championship in 2015 with Petron and in 2016 as a local import for Foton. She also played in the 2016 FIVB Women's Club World Championship.  Aside from General and Acevedo, the Tornadoes also lost Cherry Rondina, setter Rhea Dimaculangan, spikers Patty Orendain and Carol Cerveza and middle blocker Angeli Araneta. Rondina and Dimaculangan transferred to Foton’s Grand Prix archrival Petron.         --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles .....»»

Former, current Tigresses reunite in Petron

Foton’s loss is Petron’s gain. The Tornadoes may have asserted its mastery over the Tri-Activ Spikers twice in the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix in the past couple of years but Petron surely scored a big knockout punch in the recruitment war. Former Foton players Cherry Rondina and seasoned playmaker Rhea Dimaculangan bolted out of their former squad to join Petron. The Tri-Activ Spikers also landed Marivic Meneses while Carmela Tunay is also expected to sign a deal with Petron in a reunion of former and current University of Sto. Tomas players. The Tigresses will join former UST star Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, who led the Espana-based squad to its last UAAP crown seven years ago. Aside from the players, Petron also retained former Tigresses coach Shaq Delos Santos and ex-Foton assistant coach Ian Fernandez.      Tunay will only play in the Invitational Conference and will share the court with Petron’s biggest acquisition and fellow Virtual Playground talent Mika Reyes, who signed a two-year deal with the San Miguel Corporation club Wednesday after leaving F2 Logistics.         Rondina and Meneses would be coming in the All-Filipino Conference together with Far Eastern University stars Bernadeth Pons and Remy Palma, who already suited up for Petron last year, after their campaign in the UAAP. Petron’s recruitment coup sends a serious warning that the Tri-Activ Spikers desire to bring back their glory days when they won the 2014 PSL Grand Prix and 2015 All-Filipino Conference highlighted by a clean sweep of the tournament. Foton dethroned Petron in the 2015 Grand Prix in a dramatic three-game upset before sweeping the Tri-Activ Spikers in their conference finals rematch a month ago. The severely depleted Tornadoes lost seven players with Angeli Araneta, Patty Orendain, Carol Cerveza, Bia General, Kara Acevedo, Dimaculangan and Rondina making a mass exodus. In the Invitational Conference, only Dindin Santiago-Manabat, Maika Ortiz and Ivy Perez are the available holdovers with EJ Laure of UST and Jaja Santiago of National University playing in the UAAP. Foton is now recruiting players and holding tryouts to fill their roster.       --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles           .....»»

Reyes transfers, signs deal with Petron

Petron pulled off a huge recruitment coup after signing former three-time UAAP champion Mika Reyes to beef up its middle for the next season of the Philippine Superliga. The De La Salle product, last year's league ambassadress, inked a deal with the Tri-Activ Spikers after parting ways with F2 Logistics and long-time mentor Ramil De Jesus.  Reyes signed her contract Wednesday. 'It was indeed a very tough decision but Petron made it easier as we've laid out concrete plans for my personal and volleyball career,' said Reyes, who signed her contract at the San Miguel Corporation headquarters in Pasig with Virtual Playground manager and agent Charlie Dy and SMC sports director Alfrancis Chua. Petron made a well-timed decision of getting the services of the 22-year-old Reyes to fill in the gaping hole left by CJ Rosario, who is now pursuing a new career as a flight attendant. Reyes was a vital cog for DLSU, winning three championships in her five-year stay with the Taft-based squad including an incredible swan song in the UAAP Season 78. In the PSL, the 5-foot-11 Reyes was F2 Logistics' muscle in the middle when the Cargo Movers clinched its breakthrough title in the 2016 All-Filipino Conference against Foton. She also helped F2 Logistics salvage a third place finish in the import-laden Grand Prix. Reyes, who was a member of the F2 Logistics Manila that competed in the 2016 FIVB Women's Club World Championship held in Manila, is Petron's biggest recruited star since landing former players Gretchen Ho, Rachel Anne Daquis, Aby Marano, Fille Cainglet-Cayetano and Dindin Santiago-Manabat.  The Pulilan, Bulacan native will join FIVB WCWC teammate Ces Molina and multi-awarded lefty hitter Aiza Maizo-Pontillas.    --- br /> Follow this writer in Twitter @fromtheriles .....»»

Pascua replaces Acaylar as Cignal coach

A day after the resignation of long-time mentor Sammy Acaylar, Cignal tapped the services of two-time champion coach George Pascua for the coming fifth season of the Philippine Superliga. Pascua, who steered Petron to the 2014 Grand Prix and 2015 All-Filipino Conference crowns, accepted the deal Wednesday. The mentor will try to revive the HD Spikers, who in recent conferences dipped in performance after their runner up finishes in the Inaugural Conference and in the 2013 Grand Prix.   “Bagong challenge sa akin ito and siyempre excited na rin ako,” said Pascua, who was replaced by Shaq Delos Santos in Petron heading into the 2016 Grand Prix. Pascua will inherit a powerhouse roster bannered by veterans Paneng Mercado, Cherry Vivas, Jheck Dionela, Mylene Paat and Janine Marciano with Michelle Laborte now serving as assistant coach. In the 2014 Grand Prix, Pascua piloted Petron to its first-ever title behind American reinforcement Alaina Bergsma and Brazilian Erica Adachi.  Petron followed it up with a historic 13-0 sweep of the 2015 All-Filipino Conference with a solid roster led by Aby Marano, Fille Cainglet-Cayetano, Dindin Santiago-Manabat and Most Valuable Player Rachel Anne Daquis. But the Tri-Activ Spikers failed to defend its Grand Prix crown against the emerging power Foton led by 6-foot-5 Jaja Santiago and American import Lindsay Stalzer. Petron missed a spot in the Finals of the 2016 All-Filipino Conference. Acaylar resigned Tuesday after Cignal finished sixth in last year’s All-Filipino and last in the Grand Prix.     --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles           .....»»
