With flags, song, pride, French celebrate unifying victory

By Elaine Ganley, Associated Press PARIS (AP) — It was a victory for all of France and the home crowd did it justice, pouring into Paris' Champs-Elysees Avenue by the tens of thousands to celebrate in an explosion of joy. France's 4-2 win over Croatia in the World Cup final in Moscow on Sunday marked the second time in 20 years that France has won the World Cup, and came at a time when the people feel needy. "It represents enormous things," said Goffrey Hamsik, dressed in a hat resembling a rooster — the French national symbol — and a shirt with the No. 10 for Kylian Mpappe, the 19-year-old breakout star who hails from the Paris suburb of Bondy. "We've had lots of problems in France these past years," he said, recalling deadly terror attacks. "This is good for the morale ... Here, we are all united. We mix. There is no religion, there is nothing, and that's what feels good." Troublemakers marred some of the festivities at the top of the Champs-Elysees, breaking the window of a major store, throwing bottles, temporary barriers and even a bicycle at riot police as the celebrations wound down close to midnight. Police responded with water cannon and tear gas. BFM-TV reported that the store was pillaged. Earlier, people wrapped in flags and dressed in crazy hats, and one man spotted totally nude except for the Tricolor, marched down the avenue where France displayed its military might a day earlier for Bastille Day. Revelers set off smoke bombs in the national colors — blue, white and red — obscuring Napoleon's triumphal arch. People climbed atop every newspaper kiosk and bus stop in the area to wave flags and lead the crowds below in cheers. The national anthem, the Marseillaise, rang out, cars honked horns and cherry bombs cracks. A young man sprayed a fire extinguisher on the crowd on a late hot afternoon. Hundreds of police in riot gear were discretely lined up on side streets to monitor revelers. Typically, celebrations in France end up with some broken shop windows and other destruction, and Sunday was no exception. Tear gas was lobbed at one point on the Champs-Elysees. About 4,000 police watched over the fan zone — packed to its 90,000 capacity — during the match, then moved to the Champs-Elysees and neighboring streets. As night fell, The Eiffel Tower flashed 1998-2018 to mark France's two World Cup titles. The Arc de Triomph was awash in the national colors, lit with the rooster, the faces of the winning team and the words "Proud to be Blue," or French. The celebrations were spread across the nation. For all the crazy antics — and some revelers who got out of control — a sense of patriotism and unity was almost visceral. Antoine Griezmann, the France striker who scored one of the goal's Sunday, told a news conference two days before the final, televised on BFM TV, that pride in country is in short supply. "We say it so little ... We should be proud to be French," Griezmann said. Mahmoud Bourassi was among those taking a longer-term view and he had some sobering thoughts about France's run to the title and the festivities it has sparked. Bourassi runs a youth center in Bondy — Mbappe's home that was among those scarred by riots in 2005 that exposed the fissures of France that have yet to heal — and he knows the teenage star of the tournament. "All this euphoria and effervescence, it's positive but it's emotional and ephemeral," he said ahead of France's win. Bourassi said sports is a "catalyst to bring people and nations together." But, he added, it must be built on. "What we're seeing is magic, exceptional. But what are we going to do with it tomorrow?" That is a question for President Emmanuel Macron, who was in Moscow celebrating with the team on victory night, and will receive the squad more formally on Monday at the presidential Elysee Palace. Revelers celebrated the moment. "We're happy. It took 20 years ... It's the pride of the nation. It unites everyone. It federates," Frederique Pourquet said as she and her friend left the Champs-Elysees. The win "shows that the French people are consolidated and the work of all France," said Omar Bzi. Hajar Maghnaoui, of Asnieres, north of Paris, said "It's a way to bring the French people together, and also the world." ___ John Leicester in Moscow contributed to this report......»»

Arwind and his best 'Swakwords of the 2018 PBA Philippine Cup

Arwind Santos is a lot of things. Champion basketball star, most valuable player, fashion icon, recording artist, Feng Shui believer, and self-proclaimed DJ, Arwind is a pretty impressive fellow. Arwind is also pretty articulate. His #Swakwords have become legendary on Twitter. His #Swakwords in person are just as great, if not even better. When scribes ask for "two minutes" from a certain player, it's for one specific topic most of the time. If you're lucky, you get two topics. But when it comes to Arwind, a two-minute interview can give birth to five separate stories. Sometimes you don't even have to ask. He'll tell you himself Whether it's funny, controversial, or both, Arwind will give you something. Sometimes they make perfect sense, sometimes you'll ask yourself, "Ano daw?" That's Arwind Santos for you. He's the gift that keeps on giving. And in the Philippine Cup, Santos was on fire all conference long. These are the very best of Arwind's #Swakwords in the 2018 All-Filipino.   "San Miguel Beermen, ang pinaka-masarap sa lahat." In an explanation that only begged for more questions instead of giving out answers, Arwind uttered this brilliant line after the San Miguel Beermen won a fourth straight Philippine Cup title. Clarifying his earlier statements regarding rubbing alcohol, Arwind just... he didn't exactly make sense here. "Siguro yung alcohol na yun, walang iba kundi San Miguel Beermen, ang pinaka-masarap sa lahat," he said. Speaking of that rubbing alcohol...   "Ang tagal na naming di nakakatikim ng alcohol. Rubbing alcohol." Up 3-1 in the Finals, Arwind really, really wanted to celebrate already that's why he wanted to finish things off by Game 5. He might have slipped in his comment, probably he wanted a more PG answer. However, rubbing alcohol? Really? He didn't exactly make sense here again. But it's Arwind, this counts as gold.   "Gusto na naming mag-puyat." In the most childish motivation ever, Arwind uttered this line before the rubbing alcohol comment. By the way, all of this happened in the same interview. Again, up 3-1 in the Finals, Santos really, really, wanted to finish things off by Game 5. Why? Because he wants to stay up all night already, that's why. "Kami, gusto na namin mag-celebrate ng Friday. Gusto na naming mag-puyat," Arwind said as the Beermen took a commanding 3-1 lead in the Finals against Magnolia.   "May mga shadow eh. Parang yung lima nagiging walo." Frustrated after losing a game to Ginebra in the semifinals, Arwind Santos post-game rant was equal parts creative and hilarious. Implying that the Gin Kings once again got the better of the calls.... actually, the only thing he didn't actually say was the the referees favored Ginebra. That's what he was trying to say and he got fined P25,000 for it. "May mga shadow eh. Parang may mga shadow yung mga players kanina eh. Parang yung lima nagiging walo," Arwind said, obviously referring to the officiating. "Parang ganun eh, kaya nahihirapan kami bantayan kasi lima yung kalaban pero nagiging walo. Ewan ko kung sobrang bilis kaya may shadow?" he added, wondering on the mysteries of life.   "Siguro yung brief ko na lang ang magiging green, at least hindi na bawal yun kasi hindi nakikita." Technically, he said this last season but this line came from Arwind's undying love for anything green. However, the San Miguel Beermen's uniform don't match with the color green so if the PBA, for some reason, implemented a rule regarding acceptable color combinations, Santos says he's going to follow it for sure. Well... "Kung sakaling mangyari yun, susunod ako sa rules. Siguro yung brief ko na lang ang magiging green, at least hindi na bawal yun kasi hindi nakikita. May mga paraan naman sa mga ganung bagay," Arwind said. Feng Shui says green is Arwind's lucky color so...   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Man, 67, killed in raging fire at Trump Tower in New York

NEW YORK --- A raging fire that tore through a 50th-floor apartment at Trump Tower killed a man inside and sent flames and thick, black smoke pouring from windows of the president's namesake skyscraper. New York Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the cause of Saturday's blaze is not yet known but the apartment was "virtually entirely on fire" when firefighters arrived after 5:30 p.m. (5:30 a.m., Sunday, Philippine Time) "It was a very difficult fire, as you can imagine," Nigro told reporters outside the building in midtown Manhattan. "The apartment is quite large." Todd Brassner, 67, who was in the apartment, was taken to a hospital and died a short time later, the New York...Keep on reading: Man, 67, killed in raging fire at Trump Tower in New York.....»»

KAI-vals Series: Arellano s all grown up Aaron Fermin

It has become some sort of a cliché now that Kai Sotto is not yet done growing. Indeed, Ateneo de Manila High School’s 7-foot-1, 15-year-old still has three more years to tower over the competition in high school. That doesn’t mean, however, that the rest of the competition will just take that lying down. Here, we take a look at the players who are more than capable of challenging Sotto’s dominance – now and even onto the future. --- Coach Marvin Bienvenida bypassed Kai Sotto as the top overall pick in the first-ever NBTC All-Star Game Draft. Instead, the NCAA Juniors champion coach went with his prized ward in La Salle Greenhills in Joel Cagulangan. After all, in his eyes, Cagulangan’s heart is as big as Sotto’s physique. More than that, Bienvenida also already had it all plotted out how to match up with Sotto. The first step of his plan was to use his second selection on Aaron Fermin – all 6-foot-5 and 99 kg of him. Fermin was the pillar of Arellano High School and would have been the NCAA Juniors MVP if only his team had made the Final Four. Now, the NCAA’s arguable best big man will finally be matched up against the UAAP’s undisputed best big man. And when the NBTC All-Star Game rolls along, Sotto should expect not only a physically stronger Fermin, but a mentally stronger one as well. That comes from all he has learned from the Braves’ missed playoff bid. “Ang naging kulang ko po siguro (last season), kung lamang na ang kalaban, ako na ang unang pinanghihinaan ng loob,” he said. From that, Fermin and the rest of his teammates are already hard at work, gearing up for their mighty rebound next season. “Sabi nga po ni coach [Tylon Darjuan], ‘Dalawang taon na tayong malakas, bakit ganito nangyayari sa atin. Kailangan pa ba kayong pahirapan sa ensayo para palabasin character niyo,’” he shared. He then continued, “Ngayon, pinu-push niya kami na mag-ensayo nang mag-ensayo. Training namin, ‘di na tulad nang dati, sobrang pinapahirapan talaga kami ngayon.” And Fermin, long a player who has taken a backseat to the likes of Carlo Abadeza, Guilmer Dela Torre, and Marlon Espiritu, is all ready and raring to lead the way. “Handang-handa na po ako (maging leader). Sinabihan na talaga kami ni coach na kami na ang beterano, kami na ang aasahan,” he said. --- Fermin and Sotto will go head-to-head first in the SLAM Rising Stars on March 18 and then on the NBTC All-Star Game on March 23. The future of Philippine basketball will be LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on S+A, S+A HD, and livestream. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

Petron survives Klisura s 38-point explosion, keeps unbeaten slate

Games Saturday: (Muntinlupa Sports Center) 1:45 p.m. -- Foton vs F2 Logistics 4:10 p.m. -- Cignal vs Smart   Petron continued with its winning ways to keep its pristine record intact while defending champion F2 Logistics kept its hold of the second spot in the Chooks to Go-Philippine Superliga (PSL) Grand Prix at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan. The Blaze Spikers collected its seventh straight win in as many outings after snapping Cocolife’s four-game winning streak with a 26-24, 25-18, 21-25, 25-20, decision. Ces Molina stepped up in the absence of injured American import Hilary Hurley (right foot sprain) as the former San Beda University star dropped 21 points while American reinforcement Lindsay Stalzer had 22 markers for Petron, which survived the 38-point explosion of the Asset Managers’ Serbian sensation Sara Klisura.   Aiza Maizao-Pontillas got 13 points while Mika Reyes had nine for the Blaze Spikers.   “Cocolife, expect namin na lalaban talaga rin kasi ang ganda ng performance nila eh so para sa amin parang naisip ko nga kanina na wala pa ang isang import naming. Pero excited naman si Ces para doon sa posisyon niya na outside hitter hindi naman ako binigo, na-maximize namin ang strength niya so para sa amin malaking bagay,” said Petron coach Shaq Delos Santos. Cocolife dropped to 4-3. Meanwhile, the Cargo Movers cruise to an easy 25-21, 25-17, 25-14 victory over Cignal. With Venezuelan import Maria Jose Perez and Kim Fajardo at the helm, the Cargo Movers asserted their dominance early on before going for the kill en route to this impressive victory. Perez, the reigning Most Valuable Player awardee, delivered 15 kills to finish with game-high 16 points while Fajardo uncorked five aces on top of 18 excellent sets to help the Cargo Movers solidify their hold at the second spot with a 4-1 card. Kennedy Bryan and Aby Marano were also on fire as they knocked down nine points apiece while playing solid defense at the net, leaving HD Spikers’ prolific imports Jeane Horton of United States and Sonja Milanovic struggling for form. Milanovic finished with 12 points while Horton had only 10 markers for the HD Spikers, who suffered their third loss in five matches......»»

'Angkas' saves Kelly Williams from traffic on his way to the PBA

In one of the most random things to happen this season, ride-hailing app "Angkas" came through in the clutch for veteran TNT forward Kelly Williams. Coming from his home in Alabang, Williams got caught in heavy traffic along C5 and was acutally late for TNT's Philippine Cup matchup against the Blackwater Elite Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum. Already in panic, Kelly had to go the unconventional route and got help from the "Uber for motorcycles." "Yeah, oh my God. I was having a panic attack in my car. Coming from the south, I got to Taguig and about two and a half hours, I heard there was a fire in C5 and I was just like 'oh my God what am I gonna do.'" Williams said, detailing the entire incident. "So my driver said check Angkas so I was like okay, Uber for motorcycles. I got out of the car in the middle of C5, in the middle of traffic, and found this guy under the overpass. He was surprised to see me, I put my helmet on, jumped on the motorcycle and we got here. We were on the road for about 40 minutes," he added. Williams, who didn't play in the first half but still managed to get six points, six rebounds, and four blocks, said that it was a fun experience overall. However, that was the first and last time for him. "It was fun, it was actually pretty fun but, gosh, never again. Plan ahead guys," the 2008 PBA MVP said. "Initially I was scared, because he was swerving pretty well. But I got used to it, we got to the open air and it was fun. I was more worried about what coach would say," Williams added. "Coach said 'don't do it again.'" Overall, the entire thing can be charged to experience Kelly said. More importantly, he added that he tipped his driver pretty well for coming through in the clutch. "I considered running, I considered jogging. Whatever you gotta do. It was a good experience though, thank you to the cyclist. I think his name was Richard. He was a life saver," Kelly said. "I tipped him very handsomely. it was about a hundred [fee] but I'm sure I paid whatever was in my pocket because I was very grateful," Williams added.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
