Canada’s far north speeds up evacuations as fire approaches main city
Residents of Yellowknife in Canada's far north on Friday raced to evacuate ahead of a midday deadline as wildfires bear down on the remote city and other parts of the vast country. Since authorities in the Northwest Territories issued the city-wide evacuation order late Wednesday, long lines of cars have snaked along the lone highway connecting the area to Alberta province to the south ahead of the 12:00 pm (1800 GMT) cutoff. About 1,500 people have so far left Yellowknife, the regional capital, by plane, with an increased number of flights scheduled Friday to evacuate more of the city's 20,000 residents. The nearest evacuation center is 1,150 kilometers (700 miles) away, in Alberta, where several sites have been set up. Crews have scrambled to erect fire barriers as the flames approached Yellowknife, while water bombers have been seen flying low over the city and swooping in to fill up at a nearby lake. Northwest winds over the next two days will send the fire, already close to the city's perimeter, "in directions we don't want," Northwest Territories' fire information officer Mike Westwick said Thursday. Several military aircraft have already been dispatched, along with more than 120 soldiers to help beat back the flames. In what had already been declared the Northwest Territories' largest-ever evacuation, the emptying of Yellowknife now means half the population of the near-Arctic territory will soon be displaced. Several towns and Indigenous communities were also already under evacuation orders. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau interrupted his summer vacation Thursday to convene an incident response group. In British Columbia in western Canada, evacuation orders were also put in place for areas near Kelowna, as a different fire threatened the city of around 150,000. Scientists say human-caused global warming is exacerbating natural hazards, making them both more frequent and more deadly. The evacuation of Yellowknife is the second time a sizeable Canadian city has been cleared due to wildfires since 100,000 residents of Fort McMurray in Alberta's oil and gas-producing heartland were forced out in 2016. Earlier this year, suburbs of Halifax on the Atlantic coast were also evacuated. Canada is experiencing a record-setting wildfire season, with official estimates of over 13.7 million hectares (33.9 million acres) already scorched. Four people have died so far. Waves of smoke have also intermittently descended on the United States, prompting several air alert warnings in large swaths of the country's center and east. The Yellowknife evacuation comes amid heightened awareness about the deadly speed of wildfires after a town on the Hawaiian island of Maui was razed by a fast-moving inferno, killing more than 100 people. Choosing perfect summer aircon
Everyone looks forward to summer — until they are reminded just how hot Philippine summers can actually get. And when you’re in the middle of sweltering humidity and heat, there’s nothing like coming home to a space that is comfortably, quietly, and more importantly, efficiently cooled. The secret to creating this cool, refreshing oasis lies in finding the right air conditioner to keep you comfortable all summer long — without breaking the bank. If that sounds too good to be true, pay attention as Prestiz, a brand best known for creating affordable and energy-efficient solutions to help you beat the heat walks you through the basics of finding the right air conditioner to fit your needs and lifestyle. Buying Checklist When buying an air conditioner unit, it’s important to carefully evaluate a variety of factors to find the perfect unit. You don’t want to spend on an air conditioner that’s going to be too small or too big for a specific space. Begin by measuring the room’s square footage, as this will help determine the appropriate cooling capacity (measured in BTUs). Remember, larger rooms require higher BTU ratings. Energy efficiency is also crucial so always look for units with high Energy Efficiency Ratio or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio ratings to minimize energy costs. The type of air conditioner — whether it’s a window unit, portable unit, split system, or central air conditioning — should be chosen based on your space, budget, and installation requirements. Noise levels, measured in decibels (dB), should be considered as well, especially for areas like bedrooms or home offices where quiet operation is essential. Air filters, wi-fi connectivity Air filters play a significant role in maintaining indoor air quality, so opt for a unit with a good-quality, washable or replaceable air filter. Additionally, smart features such as WiFi connectivity can enhance your air conditioner’s functionality, allowing for smartphone app control and smart home system integration. Don’t forget to factor in installation and maintenance, including filter replacement or cleaning, and ensure that you choose a reputable brand like Prestiz, known for offering excellent warranty coverage and reliable customer support. Understanding Horsepower The term horsepower is something that you often come across when it comes to air conditioners. Horsepower is a common indicator of an air conditioner’s cooling capacity. For small rooms (up to 14 sq. m.) like bedrooms or home offices, a 0.5 to 1 HP air conditioner should be sufficient. For medium-sized rooms (14 to 23 sq. m.), such as living rooms or master bedrooms, a 1.5 HP air conditioner is recommended. Large rooms (23 to 37 sq. m.), including spacious living rooms or open-plan areas, generally require a 2 HP air conditioner. And Extra-large rooms (37+ sq. m.) and open spaces may need an air conditioner with 2.5 HP or higher. Keep in mind that factors such as ceiling height, insulation, sun exposure, and the number of occupants can also influence the required horsepower. Thankfully, Prestiz offers several high-capacity models for such applications so be sure to review product details carefully to choose the right one for your needs. Energy Efficiency Is Key As much as you’d love to spend all day in an air-conditioned room during summer, the thought of electricity costs is enough to send you reaching for that off switch. Except if you have a unit with a great EER. EER, or Energy Efficiency Ratio, is a measure used to rate the energy efficiency of air conditioners. It is calculated by dividing the cooling capacity of the air conditioner (measured in British Thermal Units or BTUs per hour) by the power input (measured in watts). The resulting ratio indicates how much cooling is provided for each unit of electrical power consumed. A higher EER means that the air conditioner is more energy-efficient, as it can provide more cooling with less power consumption. EERs however tend to vary depending on the brand, design, and technology. So if you’re shopping for a new unit, be sure to look for higher EER ratings, which can help bring down energy bills and even minimize environmental impact. Window-Type vs. Split-Type A couple more things to remember: You’ll probably hear the terms window-type or split-type a lot when you’re shopping for a unit. So here are a few things to remember: Split-type air conditioners offer several advantages, including energy efficiency, quiet operation, aesthetic appeal, multi-zone capability, and flexible installation. With separate indoor and outdoor components, they minimize energy loss and operate more quietly than window or portable units. They’re also less obtrusive, don’t obstruct windows, and can be installed in rooms without window access. Some split systems even allow for multi-zone cooling. However, it’s important to weigh these with your space’s needs as they will require higher upfront costs, professional installation requirements, more complex maintenance, and limited portability. On the other hand, window-type air conditioners have a lower upfront cost, easier installation, and better portability. They don’t require a separate outdoor component, which can be advantageous in certain situations. However, they have lower energy efficiency, generate more noise, obstruct windows, and have limited installation options compared to split-type units. When choosing between split and window-type air conditioners, carefully evaluate these factors in relation to your specific needs, preferences, and budget. One isn’t necessarily better than the other, it really all depends on what you need. Lifestyle fit Prestiz Window Type Air Conditioners are available in 0.5 1.0 and 1.5. Split-type models are also available at 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 HP. There’s bound to be one that will seamlessly fit your lifestyle. Miniskirt pioneer Mary Quant, queen of Swinging London, dies at 93
Fashion designer Mary Quant, the style queen of Britain's Swinging Sixties who popularised the miniskirt, died on Thursday aged 93, her family said. Whether Quant actually invented the then scandalously short skirts have long been disputed, with French designer Andre Courreges insisting he was the first to raise hemlines high on the thigh. But there is no doubt that without Quant the mini would not have become an icon of 1960s youth rebellion. The diminutive designer -- who always wore her hair in a bob -- was also credited with creating hot pants, the skinny-rib sweater, and waterproof mascara. Britain's V&A design museum paid tribute to her "trailblazing vision". "It's impossible to overstate Quant's contribution to fashion," it said on Twitter. "She represented the joyful freedom of 1960s fashion, and provided a new role model for young women." Alexandra Shulman, former editor-in-chief of British Vogue, described her as a "visionary". Quant was not just a "leader of fashion but also in female entrepreneurship, a visionary who was much more than a great haircut," she said. 'Shorter, Shorter' Born on 11 February 1930 in London, Quant studied at Goldsmiths College of Art in the city where she met her future husband and business partner, Alexander Plunket Greene. He died in 1990. Together they opened their first boutique, Bazaar, in 1955 in Chelsea, which would become the beating heart of Swinging London. Bazaar sold clothes and accessories and its basement restaurant became a meeting point for young people and artists. The whole Chelsea district was soon attracting celebrities such as the actors Brigitte Bardot and Audrey Hepburn and pop stars like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Quant raised the hemline well above the knee, creating short dresses and skirts with simple shapes and strong colors that she described as "arrogant, aggressive, and sexy". "Good taste is death, vulgarity is life," she told The Guardian. Her models were showcased in provocative window displays overlooking the King's Road, which became a miniskirt catwalk and drew American photographers keen to picture Swinging London. "City gents in bowler hats beat on our shop window with their umbrellas shouting 'Immoral!' and 'Disgusting!' at the sight of our miniskirts over the tights, but customers poured in to buy," she recalled in her 1966 book "Quant by Quant". The designer was also widely quoted as saying that "it was the girls on the King's Road who invented the mini... I wore them very short and the customers would say, 'Shorter, shorter.' 'Quite outrageous' The era's most high-profile model Lesley Lawson, better known as Twiggy, made the miniskirt popular abroad and with business booming, Quant opened a second shop in London in 1957. She explored geometric designs, polka dots, and contrasting colors, and played with new fabrics, including PVC and stretch fabrics, to achieve a modern and playful look. She entered the American market in the early 1960s, collaborating with the department store JC Penney. She also created the cheaper Ginger Group line and went into cosmetics, all her designs featuring a trademark daisy. Quant also scandalised British society with her frank views on sex, making headlines when she famously said she had shaved her pubic hair into the shape of a heart and dyed it green. Although her heyday was in the 1960s and 1970s, when she turned her sights on the Japanese market, Quant's legacy can still be seen on the high street, with its high fashion at low prices. She sold her make-up company to a Japanese group in 2000, staying on as a consultant. Alongside making it in America, Quant considered being knighted in 2015 her greatest achievement, and called Queen Elizabeth II who made her a dame "the wisest woman I've ever met". Asked by The Guardian in 2016 what she would change if she could edit her past, Quant replied: "Not much, I've had a lovely time." Li at his best and builds early lead at PGA Championship
By DOUG FERGUSON AP Golf Writer SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Still young, often inconsistent, forever fearless, Li Haotong is capable of just about anything on a big stage in golf. He was at his best Friday in the PGA Championship. Three years after his 63 in the final round of the British Open, Li hit only four fairways at Harding Park and still managed a 5-under 65 that gave him the early lead and set the target for Jason Day, Brooks Koepka and Tiger Woods to chase. The 25-year-old from China capped a bogey-free round with his eighth straight par and was at 8-under 132, two shots ahead of Tommy Fleetwood of England among the early starters. Surprised? Depends on the day. “The last couple days, I've been pretty much all hit in the right spot,” Li said. Getting as much attention was the logo on his hat — WeChat, the Chinese social media company and one of his biggest sponsors. Li was in the spotlight at Harding Park one day after President Donald Trump signed executive orders on a vague ban of WeChat and TikTok in 45 days. Just as unclear was whether Li was aware of the development. “I don't know,” he said. “Who knows?” Li is a two-time winner on the European Tour, most recently in 2018 at the Dubai Desert Classic when he rallied down the stretch to beat Rory McIlroy by one shot. He was sensational at Royal Birkdale in 2017 — only five other players have 63 in the final round of a major. But he had a terrible week in his Presidents Cup debut at Royal Melbourne in December. When he first came to America, he made fast friends on the developmental tours with his constant laughter, engaging personality and aggressive play. “He's got the arsenal to take it low,” said Adam Scott, his teammate at Royal Melbourne. “But we don’t see that kind of consistency out of him, and that probably matches his personality a little bit. He’s young, though, and that’s the kind of golf he plays. He plays pretty much all guns blazing, and when it comes off, it’s really good.” And when it doesn't? He beat Koepka in the Match Play last year and reached the round of 16. But that was his last top 10 in America. And then there was the Presidents Cup. Li brought his trainer to be his caddie, and the caddie got lost on the course during a practice round, gave up and headed for the clubhouse. Instead of finding him, Li played the rest of the round out of another player's bag. International captain Ernie Els wound up benching him for two days, playing Li only when he had to. Li lost both matches he played. “It's been very tough on me, the Presidents Cup, because I didn't play until Saturday,” Li said. “So not quite in the Presidents that way, actually. But anyways, good experience.” Fleetwood had one of those final-round 63s in the majors two years ago at Shinnecock Hills in the U.S. Open. He had a 64 on Friday and was two shots behind at 134. Much like Li — maybe the only thing they have in common — it's been a slow start back. Fleetwood stayed in England during the pandemic, not returning to competition until Minnesota two weeks ago (he missed the cut). He also played a World Golf Championship last week with middling results, but he found his form in San Francisco. “It’s funny really, like when you’ve played poorly, you feel a long way off, and then you have a day like today and you obviously feel a lot better about it,” Fleetwood said. “I feel like I’ve prepared well last week and this week and felt way more in the groove of tournament golf.” Cameron Champ, who grew up in Sacramento, had a 64. He was three shots behind Li, along with Paul Casey (67). Brendon Todd, who shared the 18-hole lead with Day, settled for a 70 and joined them at 135. Li, who primarily plays the European Tour, went back to China in March when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down golf. He returned at the Memorial and missed the cut, and then tied for 75th in a 78-man field last week in Tennessee. “I didn't even (think) I could play like this ... got no confidence,” Li said. “Probably it helped me clear my mind a little bit.” He's wise enough to realize the tournament is not even at the halfway point. If the lead holds, Li would be the first player from China to hold the lead after any round of a major......»»
LPGA returns with Kang posting 66 at Inverness for the lead
TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Danielle Kang went more than six months without competing and looked as though she had never been away, playing bogey-free at Inverness Club for a 6-under 66 and a one-shot lead in the LPGA Drive On Championship. The LPGA Tour’s much-awaited return from the COVID-19 pandemic brought an immediate sense of its new world. Kang had no idea where she stood after a closing birde. “There aren’t any leaderboards on the golf course,” Kang said. Inverness, where Paul Azinger beat Greg Norman in a playoff at the 1993 PGA Championship, is hosting the Solheim Cup next year and offered to stage the first event back for the LPGA Tour since the Women’s Australian Open on Feb. 16. The LPGA Tour remains in northeast Ohio next week before heading to Scotland. Jodi Ewart Shadoff of England also played bogey-free for a 67. Celine Boutier of France and Lee-Anne Pace of South Africa also were at 5 under until both made bogey on the closing hole. They settled for a 68. The foremost global tour in golf attracted 130 players from some 30 countries, though it was missing the leading stars from powerhouse South Korea. Jin Young Ko, the No. 1 player in the world, and Sung Hyun Park have stayed home and are playing on the Korean LPGA. Neither is expected to travel to Scotland for the Women’s British Open in three weeks. The lone Korean among the top 10 -- a rarity given the country’s strength in women’s golf -- was Hee Young Park at 70. Kang, a former Women’s PGA champion, paid particular attention to the speed of the greens at Inverness, making six birdies and a number of key par putts to keep her round going. “Even if you hit a good shot, it’s not an easy putt,” Kang said. “I almost three-putted from 9 feet. Definitely had a really good attitude, and it was really fun to be back.” The LPGA Tour is not allowing spectators, though that wasn’t a problem for Kang. She was more concerned about her etiquette with two other players, different from a more casual attitude at home. Kang played only twice at the start of the year in the Florida events, including a third-place finish Jan. 23 at the Gainbridge LPGA at Boca Rio. The field attracted four of the top 10 from the world ranking, and Kang (No. 4) Minjee Lee of Australia (No. 8) were the only ones to break par. Lee shot 69. Nelly Korda, the highest-ranked player at No. 2 in the world, opened with two birdies in three holes and closed with another birdie. It was the part in between that cost her, and she had a 76. Lexi Thompson, who has slipped to No. 9, opened with a 73. For most of them, it was simply good to be back. Lydia Ko made a long birdie to close out her round of 69, joining Lee and Amy Olson. “I saw some of the girls and I was like, ‘Man, it’s nice to not see you through a virtual app or on social media,’” Ko said......»»
