Former, current Tigresses reunite in Petron

Foton’s loss is Petron’s gain. The Tornadoes may have asserted its mastery over the Tri-Activ Spikers twice in the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix in the past couple of years but Petron surely scored a big knockout punch in the recruitment war. Former Foton players Cherry Rondina and seasoned playmaker Rhea Dimaculangan bolted out of their former squad to join Petron. The Tri-Activ Spikers also landed Marivic Meneses while Carmela Tunay is also expected to sign a deal with Petron in a reunion of former and current University of Sto. Tomas players. The Tigresses will join former UST star Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, who led the Espana-based squad to its last UAAP crown seven years ago. Aside from the players, Petron also retained former Tigresses coach Shaq Delos Santos and ex-Foton assistant coach Ian Fernandez.      Tunay will only play in the Invitational Conference and will share the court with Petron’s biggest acquisition and fellow Virtual Playground talent Mika Reyes, who signed a two-year deal with the San Miguel Corporation club Wednesday after leaving F2 Logistics.         Rondina and Meneses would be coming in the All-Filipino Conference together with Far Eastern University stars Bernadeth Pons and Remy Palma, who already suited up for Petron last year, after their campaign in the UAAP. Petron’s recruitment coup sends a serious warning that the Tri-Activ Spikers desire to bring back their glory days when they won the 2014 PSL Grand Prix and 2015 All-Filipino Conference highlighted by a clean sweep of the tournament. Foton dethroned Petron in the 2015 Grand Prix in a dramatic three-game upset before sweeping the Tri-Activ Spikers in their conference finals rematch a month ago. The severely depleted Tornadoes lost seven players with Angeli Araneta, Patty Orendain, Carol Cerveza, Bia General, Kara Acevedo, Dimaculangan and Rondina making a mass exodus. In the Invitational Conference, only Dindin Santiago-Manabat, Maika Ortiz and Ivy Perez are the available holdovers with EJ Laure of UST and Jaja Santiago of National University playing in the UAAP. Foton is now recruiting players and holding tryouts to fill their roster.       --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles           .....»»

Reyes transfers, signs deal with Petron

Petron pulled off a huge recruitment coup after signing former three-time UAAP champion Mika Reyes to beef up its middle for the next season of the Philippine Superliga. The De La Salle product, last year's league ambassadress, inked a deal with the Tri-Activ Spikers after parting ways with F2 Logistics and long-time mentor Ramil De Jesus.  Reyes signed her contract Wednesday. 'It was indeed a very tough decision but Petron made it easier as we've laid out concrete plans for my personal and volleyball career,' said Reyes, who signed her contract at the San Miguel Corporation headquarters in Pasig with Virtual Playground manager and agent Charlie Dy and SMC sports director Alfrancis Chua. Petron made a well-timed decision of getting the services of the 22-year-old Reyes to fill in the gaping hole left by CJ Rosario, who is now pursuing a new career as a flight attendant. Reyes was a vital cog for DLSU, winning three championships in her five-year stay with the Taft-based squad including an incredible swan song in the UAAP Season 78. In the PSL, the 5-foot-11 Reyes was F2 Logistics' muscle in the middle when the Cargo Movers clinched its breakthrough title in the 2016 All-Filipino Conference against Foton. She also helped F2 Logistics salvage a third place finish in the import-laden Grand Prix. Reyes, who was a member of the F2 Logistics Manila that competed in the 2016 FIVB Women's Club World Championship held in Manila, is Petron's biggest recruited star since landing former players Gretchen Ho, Rachel Anne Daquis, Aby Marano, Fille Cainglet-Cayetano and Dindin Santiago-Manabat.  The Pulilan, Bulacan native will join FIVB WCWC teammate Ces Molina and multi-awarded lefty hitter Aiza Maizo-Pontillas.    --- br /> Follow this writer in Twitter @fromtheriles .....»»

Reigning back-to-back Most Valuable Player Grethcel Soltones uncorked 18 kills in her total of 18 points for SSC-R, which improved to 7-0 win-loss slate and moved two wins closer for an outright Finals berth with a thrice-to-beat advantage. The win also gave Arellano University (6-1) and reigning champion College of St. Benilde (6-2) at least a playoff for a semis seat.  Joyce Sta. Rita and Katherine Villegas combined for 14 points for SSC-R, which scattered 38 attacks compared to 18 of the Lady Altas. Perpetual slid to 3-3 card and is now in danger of missing the semifinals cut. Lourdes Clemente was the only Lady Altas in double figures with 10. In men’s play, reigning champions Perpetual Help Altas won their third straight match by tripping the Stags, 25-23, 25-20, 25-21, for a 4-1 slate at fourth spot. SSC-R dropped to 3-3 tied with Lyceum of the Philippines University. In the juniors division, defending champion Perpetual (4-1) defeated listless SSC-R (0-5), 25-19, 25-13, 25-15.       ---   Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles .....»»

Red Booters begin semis quest

strong>Games Tuesday: /strong> (Rizal Football Field) 8:00 a.m.- San Beda vs Letran (jrs) 10:00 a.m.- St. Benilde vs Arellano U (jrs) 12:00 n.n. - San Beda vs LPU (srs) 2:00 p.m.- St. Benilde vs Arellano U (srs)   San Beda College seeks to duplicate its undefeated first round performance as it clashes with Lyceum of the Philippines University on Tuesday’s start of the Final Four of the 92nd NCAA football tournament at the Rizal Memorial Football Field. The Red Booters clinched the first round pennant via a six-match sweep it capped with a 6-0 bashing of the Arellano University Chiefs, the defending champions, on Dec. 12 last year and will clinch the title outright if they could top the single-robin format Final Four. They face off with the Pirates, which finished tied with the Perpetual Help Altas at No. 4 with six match points apiece but ended up clinching the fourth and last berth via better goal differential, 0 to -9. Interestingly, San Beda, which is eyeing a league-best 22nd seniors title, had a hard time beating LPU, 3-0, in their first meeting on Dec. 8. 'We should be physically and mentally prepared because the it gets tougher from here on,' said San Beda coach Michael Pediamonte. 'We also can't underestimate any team.' No. 2 College of St. Benilde and No. 3 Arellano clash in the other match set at 2:00 p.m., which will precede the 12:00 noon showdown between San Beda and LPU. If San Beda goes on to rule the second round, it will go on to claim the championship.  Otherwise, it will play the second round winner in a one-game title contest. San Beda's junior counterparts, likewise seeks to top the second round as it tackles No. 4 Letran at 8:00 a.m. while No. 2 defending champion CSB-La Salle Greenhills faces off with No. 3 Arellano U at 10:00 a.m. The Cubs clinched the first round pennant by finishing with 16 match points on five triumphs and a draw. .....»»
