PAGCOR Photography Contest 2023 winners bared
The results of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation’s Photography Contest 2023 were revealed today, 13 September, with PAGCOR’s announcement of the 24 grand winners from among 5,400 entries nationwide. The 12 winners in the conventional photography category received P80,000 each in cash prizes, while the 12 winners in the mobile category took home P35,000 each – the biggest prizes so far in the history of PAGCOR’s photo contest. PAGCOR Chairman and CEO Alejandro Tengco, who graced the event, said the agency was overwhelmed by the huge turnout of participants for the competition, which made a comeback this year following a six-year hiatus. “We were overwhelmed by the significant number of participants who joined this photo competition. Because of this project’s success, we will make this photography competition an annual event,” Tengco said. “At dahil naging matagumpay ang photo contest na ito, we will refine this para maging isang kilalang photography competition organized by PAGCOR. Umasa din kayo na dadagdagan pa natin ang prizes sa mga susunod na taon,” he said. Tengco said this year’s contest, with the theme “Sa’n Tayo Next?”, showcased relatively unknown but beautiful destinations of the Philippines that hold huge potentials of becoming major tourist spots. “The winning photos showed just how beautiful the Philippines is. So, instead of going abroad, we encourage all Filipinos to explore the beauty of our country and help promote domestic tourism,” he added. There were three winners each from Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao and Metro Manila in both categories. The non-winning grand finalists for the conventional category also received P25,000 while the mobile category grand finalists received P10,000. “The Golden View of Mt. Utopia”, captured by 32-year-old self-taught photographer Reymund Requina from Cebu City, bagged one of the grand prizes under the conventional category. “Sobrang blessing in disguise ng photography sa akin. Nung panahong walang wala ako, itong photography ang sumalba sa akin kaya sobra-sobra talaga ang pasasalamat ko rito,” Requina said. The other conventional category winners were Aljon P. Tugaoen (Over and Under the Rocks of Pangil); Gerardo S. Pacios, Jr. (Batok); Dionisis Q. Silva (Amazing Cave); Louie Lawrence B. Lacson (Side Trip Tayo sa Kabalin-An Pond); Jumelito S. Capilo (The Elusive View of Panimahawa); Alvin B. Cempron (Malitbog); Oliver M. Atienza (Kalinaw sa Malinao (Tranquility of Malinao)); Earl Ryan G. Janubas (Splendid Impasugong); Klienne M. Eco (Payapang Umaga); Macbeth T. Omega (A Filipino Masterpiece - The Maligcong Rice Terraces); and Christopher G. Andres (Celebrating Centuries of Cultivation). The 12 mobile category winners, meanwhile, were Nicko A. Melendres (The Mighty Casaroro Falls); John Rhoel V. Florentino (The Last of the Last Frontier); Celbert A. Palaganas (Remnants of the Golden Past); Rowell C. Clenuar (The Alicia Panoramic Park); Jack David C. Ponpon (Philippines meets the Pacific); Daryl P. Anahaw (Playground of the Gods); Anthony T. Into (Green Dots of Hope); Jessie James Jalon F. Esteban (The Next Chapter: Discovering New Frontiers of El Nido Beach); Sherbien M. Dacalanio (Warzone to Wow Zone); Alvin Mike M. Mahait (The Gentle Pawikan of Negros); Gerard Jonathan C. Laserna (Gentle Beast); and Ronald P. Portula (Tropical State of Mind). Mindanao regional screening judge and nature and commercial photographer Edwin Martinez commended PAGCOR for reviving the competition, which highlighted the country’s vast tourism potentials. “This is a very good project as it does not only help develop the talent of our photographers but, more importantly, promotes our tourism industry especially the places that are not so famous but can rival the other known spots in the country in terms of beauty,” he said. The other prominent photographers and artists who served as judges were Jijo de Guzman, Bobot Go, Lauren Malcampo, Wig Tysmans, Pepper Teehankee, Edwin Tuyay, Jo Avila, Jilson Tiu, Ernie Sarmiento, Wawi Navarozza, Sherwin Magsino and Noel Guevara. Trapped US explorer nears rescue from deep Turkish cave
A US explorer trapped for more than a week deep in a Turkish cave with internal bleeding could be pulled to safety as early as Monday night, rescuers said. Mark Dickey, 40, developed stomach problems on September 2 while exploring the depths of the Morca Cave, a remote complex of narrow underground tunnels in southern Turkey's Taurus Mountains. The Morca Cave is Turkey's third-deepest, according to the county's caving federation. Its lowest point is 1.3 kilometers (0.8 miles) below ground. Dickey fell ill at a depth of 1,120 meters (695 feet), sparking what organizers said was one of the largest and most complicated underground rescue operations ever mounted. An international team of rescuers, fellow explorers and medics is now trying to bring Dickey to a base camp 180 meters below the surface. He has been strapped to a stretcher, which sometimes needed to be lifted vertically by rope through particularly narrow passageways. "The rescue operation will continue from minus 180 meters after Mark has rested at the camp here for a while," the Turkish Caving Federation said. "If everything goes well, the aim is to rescue Mark completely by tonight or tomorrow." Officials said Dickey's health was improving thanks to emergency treatment by medics who raced to reach him underground. "He is in good health in general. He continues to be fed with liquids," Cenk Yildiz, the head of the local branch of Turkey's emergency response service, told reporters late on Sunday. "We have resolved his stomach bleeding issues with plasma and serum support." In a video recorded on Wednesday, Dickey thanked the Turkish government for its help. "The quick response of the Turkish government to get the medical supplies that I needed, in my opinion saved my life," Dickey said. ‘We must not forget’: Thailand marks cave rescue anniversary
Hundreds of people gathered on Monday to mark the five-year anniversary of the dramatic rescue against impossible odds of 12 young footballers from a flooded cave in northern Thailand. Now in their late teens, the boys and their coach, Ekkapol Chantawong, descended into the spotlit chambers of the Tham Luang cave complex to pay tribute to the thousands of people who worked for 18 days and nights to get them out. The "Wild Boars" team had entered the caves in June 2018 and were trapped when rains flooded the complex, emerging after a daring international rescue operation to global acclaim. "If it weren't for these people we wouldn't have survived, and wouldn't have been alive this day," Ekkapol said. "I'd like to say thank you to all of you from the bottom of my heart." But the joyful anniversary was tinged with sadness following the death of 17-year-old captain Duangpetch Promthep, who passed away while on a football scholarship in Britain earlier this year. His former teammates each laid white flowers at a memorial image of him outside the caves, surrounded by crowds in the bright sunlight and vivid jungle flora. A video tribute was also played inside the cave for ex-Chiang Rai governor Narongsak Osatanakorn, who won plaudits for his handling of the incident, and who died last month. "We must not forget the efforts of everyone involved in the rescue mission, especially of those who are no longer here with us," said Varawut Silpa-archa, minister of natural resources and environment. Offerings were also made to Jao Mae Nang Nong -- a legendary princess said to be the spirit of the caves in which she supposedly died, and who was frequently invoked for strength during the rescue. Miraculous rescue The boys were on a day trip to the cave complex on June 23, 2018, when heavy rains flooded the complex via underground waterways. They were feared dead until two British cave divers negotiated a series of narrow waterways and corridors and found them on July 2, trapped in a deep chamber, four kilometers (2.5 miles) from the entrance. The next hurdle was safely moving the boys and their coach out of the caves. In a highly risky operation, they were sedated, dressed in wetsuits and breathing apparatus, and hauled through the complex by foreign cave hobbyists, expert divers, and a team of Thai navy SEALs including Saman Kunan, who died during the rescue. Despite the odds, the boys and their coach all made it out alive. Adul Sam-on, one of the footballers who shot to fame after he thanked the divers who found them in English, was granted Thai nationality following the rescue, as were his coach and two teammates. Speaking on Monday, the now-19-year-old said he had just graduated high school in the United States, and would shortly be attending university. While there has been a steady stream of books, TV series, and film adaptations of the rescue, the boys themselves have mostly kept out of the limelight. Mongkol Booneiam, known as Mark, said he still lives -- and plays football -- in a nearby village. "If I have free time then I'd try to go play," he said. Bong Go leads groundbreaking of Super Health Center in Hagonoy, Davao del Sur
In his commitment to continue improving access to public health services in the country especially in far-flung communities, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go personally attended the groundbreaking for the Super Health Center in Hagonoy, Davao del Sur on Saturday, July 1. Coinciding with the 70th Araw ng Hagonoy celebration, the event provided an opportunity for Go to greet the people of Hagonoy, emphasizing his dedication to assisting those in need. The establishment of Super Health Centers is one of Go’s initiatives, done in collaboration with the Department of Health, aimed at strengthening the healthcare system, particularly access to basic medical services in remote areas. In his capacity as the Chair of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, Go consistently advocated for the establishment of these healthcare facilities, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that more Filipinos have access to affordable healthcare. Super Health Centers will offer basic health services, including database management, out-patient, birthing, isolation, isolation, diagnostic (laboratory: x-ray, ultrasound), pharmacy and ambulatory surgical unit. Other available services are eye, ear, nose, and throat (EENT) service, oncology centers, physical therapy and rehabilitation center, and telemedicine, where remote diagnosis and treatment of patients will be done. Through the collective efforts of fellow lawmakers, sufficient funds had been allocated for 307 Super Health Centers in 2022 and 322 in 2023. DOH, the lead implementing agency, identifies the strategic areas where they will be constructed. In Davao del Sur, Super Health Centers will be strategically located in Digos City, Matanao, and Kiblawan, aside from the one in Hagonoy. Before the groundbreaking, Go and his staff distributed grocery packs, vitamins, masks, shirts, and snacks to 1,000 struggling residents. The senator likewise gave away shoes, bicycles, cellular phones, watches, and balls for basketball and volleyball to select beneficiaries. Moreover, personnel from the Department of Social Welfare and Development extended financial aid to struggling residents in the town through its Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation program. Go also offered additional assistance to those in need of hospital care as he encouraged them to seek the services of the nearby Malasakit Centers at the Davao del Sur Provincial Hospital in Digos City, or Southern Philippines Medical Center in Davao City. Lapitan n’yo lang,” he added. The senator initiated the Malasakit Centers program in 2018 and was successful in institutionalizing the program through RA 11463, which he principally sponsored and authored in the Senate in 2019. These centers have assisted over seven million Filipinos thus far, according to the DOH. To help create more economic opportunities in the province, Go, as Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, likewise supported the construction of multipurpose buildings in Digos City, Bansalan, Hagonoy, Magsaysay, Malalag, Padada, and Sulop; and the development of a bat cave in Matanao. Go then expressed gratitude to the local officials, led by Hagonoy Mayor Jesus Dureza, Jr., for their unwavering support to the people they represent. #### The post Bong Go leads groundbreaking of Super Health Center in Hagonoy, Davao del Sur appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Huge Hindu pilgrimage begins in Indian Kashmir
Thousands of Hindu devotees from across India began trekking up through Himalayan passes in Indian-administered Kashmir on Saturday, for the start of an annual pilgrimage accompanied by a major security escort. Critics accuse India's Hindu nationalist government of using the annual Amarnath procession to reinforce New Delhi's claims over the disputed Muslim-majority region. The pilgrimage is a journey to a cave shrine at an altitude of 3,900 meters (12,795 feet) that contains a holy stalagmite, believed to be an incarnation of the deity Shiva. Tens of thousands of soldiers, paramilitary troops, and police were deployed along two separate routes leading to the remote destination. "Every soldier has been briefed to ensure (the) least inconvenience to locals," army officer Amandeep Malhi told reporters on Friday. Last year, at least 16 pilgrims died in flash floods that struck near the cave, and Malhi assured pilgrims that his forces would be ready if disaster struck again. "This year, quick and effective response teams will ensure fast evacuation in case of any natural calamity," he said. The pilgrimage used to be low-key, with a few thousand pilgrims attending, until an armed insurgency against Indian rule in Kashmir erupted in 1989. Since then, the religious practice -- and accompanying security mobilization -- have grown, as has its political significance. Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan and is claimed by both. Rebel groups fighting for Kashmir independence have often said that the pilgrimage is not a target but have warned in the past that if the religious event was used to establish Hindu domination of the territory they would act. In 2017, suspected rebels attacked a bus, killing 11 pilgrims. The post Huge Hindu pilgrimage begins in Indian Kashmir appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
