EXO’s D.O. returns as soloist after two years
After the global success of EXO’s group comeback Exist, member Doh Kyungsoo, known by his stage name D.O., again goes solo with his second mini-album Anticipation, which drops on 18 September. On 1 September, his agency, SM Entertainment, announced the K-pop idol’s comeback as a solo singer after two years, with a logo update across all their social media platforms and a teaser image showing the singer sitting in front of a desk inside a barely lit room. D.O. also posted the teaser on his Instagram account, which he opened to the public on 10 July. His IG was a surprise, since the 30-year-old K-pop star has kept a minimal social media presence. Although details of the mini-album are yet to be announced, the seven-track EP is sure to highlight once again the singer’s vocals. His first solo album, Empathy, was critically acclaimed following its release in July 2021, topping iTunes’ album charts in 60 countries despite minimal promotions. D.O. is also busy with his acting career and variety show appearances. The multi-award-winning Korean idol-actor recently led the South Korean sci-fi drama film The Moon (2023), written and directed by Kim Yong-hwa, the esteemed director behind box-office hits Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds (2017) and Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days (2018). After bagging his first Male Actor Excellence award at the KBS Drama Awards last year with his impeccable comic acting in Bad Prosecutor, D.O. has bagged nominations for Best Actor at the 2nd Blue Dragon Series Awards with Bad Prosecutor, and another Best Actor nomination at the 32nd Buil Film Awards for The Moon. D.O. and his bandmates are currently headlining the fourth season of the variety show EXO Ladder. He will also star in a new show by Na Yeong-seok with Kim Woo-bin, Lee Kwang-soo and Kim Ki-bang. Pre-orders for D.O.’s second mini-album have officially started in various online and offline music stores. Foo Fighters’ ‘But Here We Are’ tops global charts
The Foo Fighters’ 11th album, But Here We Are, unanimously hailed as one of the band’s strongest to date, has become its 10th album to break the Top 10 of the US Album Chart. But Here We Are also marks the Foo Fighters’ sixth UK number one, ninth Australian number one, number one spots in Switzerland and New Zealand and Top 5 debuts in nearly a dozen more territories. [caption id="attachment_149397" align="aligncenter" width="525"] DAVE Grohl of Foo Fighters.[/caption] Released 2 June on Roswell Records/RCA Records, But Here We Are has landed at number eight in its first week on the Billboard 200, while entering at number one on the Alternative and Hard Rock album sales charts. The new album’s Top 10 debut continues a trend that began with the back-to-back Top 10 positions achieved by The Colour and the Shape (1997) and There is Nothing Left to Lose (1999), and has since included the number one charting Wasting Light (2011) and Concrete and Gold (2017), as well as the Top 3 placings of One by One (2002), In Your Honor (2005), Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace (2007), Sonic Highways (2014) and Medicine at Midnight (2021). Billboard called the album “a moving collection that balances raw emotion with the band’s signature determination to see the light through the darkness”, while the New York Times described the melodies as “soaring and anthemic as they’ve sounded in years.” The Foo Fighters’ But Here We Are is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment. Ed Sheeran copyright trial over Marvin Gaye similarities underway
Ed Sheeran arrived at US federal court Tuesday for a trial over whether the British pop star plagiarized American music icon Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On" in his own 2014 hit "Thinking Out Loud." Industry members are closely following the copyright lawsuit as it could set precedent for protections on songwriters' creations and open the door to legal challenges elsewhere. It's the second trial in a year for Sheeran, who successfully testified at a London court last April in a case centered around his song "Shape Of You," saying that lawsuit was emblematic of copyright litigation going too far. The judge ruled in his favor. He arrived Tuesday at the courthouse in Manhattan silently and with his head lowered, wading past the throng of cameras and journalists stationed outside. At issue in the New York case are alleged "striking similarities and overt common elements" between Gaye and Sheeran's songs. During the trial, Sheeran told the court "Yes, Amy Wadge and I wrote the song 'Thinking Out Loud,'" referring to the ballad's co-author, said The New York Times, which had access to the room. The plaintiffs are the heirs of Ed Townsend, a musician and producer who co-wrote Gaye's 1973 soul classic, who were also in court Tuesday. "I am here for justice, protecting my father's intellectual properties," Townsend's daughter Kathryn Townsend Griffin told journalists outside the courthouse. "As Marvin Gaye would say, 'Let's get it on,'" quipped Ben Crump, lawyer for the plaintiffs. 'Coincidence' Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud" shot up America's Billboard Hot 100 charts when it was released, and won Sheeran a Song of the Year prize at the Grammys in 2016. Townsend's family has pointed out that the group Boyz II Men has performed mash-ups of the two songs, and that Sheeran has blended the songs together on stage as well. Crump pointed to a 2014 fan video showing Sheeran performing a mash-up of his song and Gaye's at a concert, which the lawyer said amounted to a "confession" and a "smoking gun," according to the Times. The lawsuit, filed in 2016 -- and refiled in 2017 after being rejected on procedural grounds -- also names Sony. Sheeran's team contests the allegations, saying "there are dozens if not hundreds of songs that predate and postdate" Gaye's song, "utilizing the same or similar chord progression." "These medleys are irrelevant to any issue in the case and would be misleading [and] confuse the jury." There have been a flood of such copyright trials in recent years, notably in 2016 when Gaye's family -- who is not part of the New York lawsuit against Sheeran -- successfully sued the artists Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams, and T.I. over similarities between the song "Blurred Lines" and Gaye's "Got to Give it Up." They were ordered to pay some $5 million in damages, in a result that surprised many in the industry including legal experts who saw many of the musical components cited as foundational musical elements largely in the public domain. Five years later an appeals court decision confirmed Led Zeppelin's victory over a similar case with the classic "Stairway to Heaven" at issue. But jury trials over music copyright could go any which way, and in this case likely will ultimately come down to the arrangement of a single chord progression. A musicologist retained by the defense says in court documents that the four-chord sequence was used in a number of songs before Gaye's hit came out in 1973. "There's only so many notes and very few chords used in pop music," Sheeran said in an Instagram video last April. "Coincidence is bound to happen if 60,000 are being released every day on Spotify." K-Racs the glue that will hold together Coach Aldin s NCAA First 5
Aldin Ayo has been calling the shots for University of Sto. Tomas from 2018 to present. Before this, the always amiable mentor was at the helm of De La Salle University from 2016 to 2017. And before this, Coach Aldin was the head coach for alma mater Colegio de San Juan de Letran in 2015. Through all of that, he has had a hand in the discovery and the development of young talent for his teams as well as the game planning for the opposing rising stars. Among all of those, who are the best of the best for him? Here is Aldin Ayo's NCAA First 5, as he told ABS-CBN Sports: JIOVANI JALALON The Jalalon of 2015 was not yet the Jalalon of 2016 - you know, the one who drove Arellano University all the way to the Finals. Still, that younger Jalalon posed problems even for Coach Aldin and his "mayhem" in Letran. "A two-way player. He knows his role as a point guard," the latter said of the former. Jalalon's shine as a full-fledged superstar came in the season after Ayo left Intramuros, but the latter has always been a good judge of potential and saw just that in the former. SCOTTIE THOMPSON Unlike Jalalon, Thompson was already at the peak of his powers in Coach Aldin's one and only season in Letran. And so, the fiery tactician had a frontrow seat to the type of all-around impact University of Perpetual Help's proud product can have. "Very, versatile player plus good character," he said. Thompson fell short of winning a game against Coach Aldin's Knights, but without a doubt, the former won the admiration of the latter. KEVIN RACAL Racal does not necessarily get the shine that Mark Cruz - or Rey Nambatac, for that matter - does. However, it cannot be denied that the 6-foot-4 forward is the perfect personification of the versatility Coach Aldin seeks from his players. Whether it be defending Ola Adeogun, dogging Baser Amer, delivering an assist, or drilling a timely three, Racal can do it all - and he did it all to help Letran in its Cinderella run to the title. "He is a winner in all aspects," Ayo said. ART DELA CRUZ Adeogun was far from full strength, Amer got injured in the elimination round, and so, San Beda University's one and only constant was Art Dela Cruz. The do-it-all forward made his presence felt all over for the Red Lions and was the first and foremost reason why they stayed afloat despite the health of their other two big guns. In Dela Cruz, the red and white had, pretty much, what Coach Aldin had in Racal. "One of the most versatile players in college basketball. His basketball IQ is off the charts. He can be a point forward," the former Letran coach said. ALLWELL ORAEME Like all of the above, Oraeme can do damage both on offense and defense. "Rim protector on defense then on offense, he will be the recipient of the playmaking of Jalalon, Thompson, Racal, and Dela Cruz," Coach Aldin said, talking about the back-to-back MVP from Mapua University. Indeed, the Nigerian tower will not be forced to do much too much on offense with his four teammates all capable and confident of making plays - and will just expend his energy standing as a nightmare for opponents at the defensive end. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
