Rapper Drake says taking break from music over health issue
Canadian Rapper Drake said Friday he is taking a break from music, just hours after dropping his latest album, in order to focus on recurring stomach issues. "I probably won't make music for a little bit, I'm gonna be honest," he said on his SiriusXM radio show Table For One adding: "I need to focus on my health first and foremost... I need to get right." "I've been having the craziest problems for years with my stomach," he explained. The 36-year-old Grammy Award winner had just released his latest studio album "For All The Dogs." His five-year-old son Adonis was featured in a music video for a new single off the album called "8AM in Charlotte." It's unclear if the hiatus will affect upcoming concert dates, including Friday and Saturday shows in Toronto, where fans were already seen lining up. Drake mentioned that he would meet unspecified commitments. "I got some other things I need to do for some other people that I made promises," he said. Otherwise, he said, "I'm gonna lock the door in the studio for a little bit," Drake added. "I don't even know what a little bit is. Maybe a year or so, maybe a little longer." The initiation of the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea
On 22 August, the Government of Japan has decided in the meeting to initiate the discharge of ALPS (Advanced Liquid Processing System) treated water into the sea and to request TEPCO to promptly prepare for the start of the discharge into the sea. If there are no interference due to weather or sea conditions, the day of the initiation of discharge into the sea is expected to be 24 August. On 4 July 2023, The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) published the Comprehensive Report. The report states that Japan’s plans to discharge the ALPS treated water into the sea and associated activities are consistent with relevant international safety standards, and the discharge will have a negligible radiological impact on people and the environment. Japan has provided information to the international community in a transparent manner based on scientific evidence, with an emphasis on providing sufficient data. Nevertheless, there are some who questioned the IAEA Comprehensive Report. I believe this is evidence of their disregard for science and such moves will only hamper global cooperation in utilizing nuclear energy and jeopardize international cooperation to ensure its safety. A spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China once said that “the study of origins is a scientific matter that should be conducted jointly by scientists all over the globe and should not be politicized” in response to criticism of the WHO-China joint study of the origins of SARS-CoV-2. Japan has exactly done this about ALPS treated water—leave the issue to the scientists to solve. The IAEA also notes that the discharge into the sea is “technically feasible.” In more detail, we will manage the annual discharge volume of tritium so it will not exceed 22 trillion Bq, which is equivalent to the target discharge management value for the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station before the accident. It is worth noting that other countries also discharge tritium into the sea in compliance with their own domestic laws and regulations; for instance, according to China Nuclear Energy Association website, China, discharging 112 trillion Bq from Yangjiang Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in 2021. The amount of tritium in the ALPS treated water is far smaller than the amount of tritium discharged from many nuclear power plants and other facilities in other countries. In addition, Japan will take all possible measures to ensure the safety of the discharge into the sea even after it begins, and will not discharge anything that could adversely affect the health or environment. After the start of discharge into the sea, Japan will continue to conduct three types of monitoring (monitoring of treated water in tanks, real-time monitoring, and sea area monitoring) in a multilayered manner with the involvement of the IAEA, and if some event occurs, such as radioactivity levels exceeding standards, appropriate measures, including not discharging or suspending the discharge, will be taken. The information and experience gained in this long and difficult process of decommissioning nuclear power plant will be shared to help solve similar problems that the world may face in the future. Having gone through unprecedented hardships since the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Government of Japan has been and will continue to provide the necessary information in a transparent manner in close collaboration with the IAEA and will continue efforts to gain further understanding from the international community, while scientifically refuting politically motivated opinions. Belmonte orders probe into collapsed building that killed 1, injured 4
Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte on Friday ordered an extensive investigation into the construction site accident at the Quezon City Hall Compound that killed one person and injured four others Thursday night. The incident happened around 10:00 p.m. on 17 August at the Civic Center B Building. The five workers of MRB II Construction Corporation were rushed to the East Avenue Medical Center. Initial investigation showed that part of the building’s wall fell while demolition was ongoing. The wall was supposed to be demolished in a week’s time and should be removed part by part before a big section made of hollow blocks crumbled. The demolition was being undertaken to install a scenic elevator in front of the building. “Inatasan na natin si City Engineer Atty. Dale Perral na pangunahan ang imbestigasyon sa insidente at tingnan kung may dapat managot sa insidente,” Belmonte said. ”Isa sa mga unang aalamin ang sistemang pinaiiral ng kontratista sa construction site, at kung binigyang-halaga ba ang aspeto ng occupational safety para sa kanilang manggagawa,” she added. Perral explained that the wall being demolished is part of the architectural wall and will not affect the structural integrity of the whole building. “Rest assured that the Civic Center B is still structurally sound and safe for use. Just the same, we will ensure that the construction site, especially the ground floor, will be cordoned off and safe for passersby and city hall employees,” Perral said. Perral added that the investigation will focus on the contractor’s compliance with occupational, safety, and health standards. Construction will proceed as scheduled while additional safety measures are put in place. The mayor also ordered concerned city offices to extend financial assistance to the family of the deceased and to provide medical assistance to the injured. “Magpapaabot tayo ng tulong sa pamilya ng nasawi at karampatang atensyong medikal sa mga nasaktang manggagawa,” she said. Icon Grandmaster Flash leads the Bronx in 70s-style hip-hop jam
As a teenager Grandmaster Flash began pioneering the turntable-as-instrument, playing the now iconic Bronx block parties that gave birth to hip-hop and revolutionized music. On Friday, he was back home, commemorating 50 years of the genre with a performance that had New Yorkers born in the mid-20th century reliving their youth -- and hip-hop's. "This is not a concert -- this is a jam!" Flash, now in his 60s, shouted from the stage, as hundreds of fans roared in applause in the South Bronx's Crotona Park. The audience swayed with their hands in the air as Flash threw it back to the jams of the early 1970s, which ushered in the genre that's profoundly impacted music as well as fashion, dance and the culture at large. The community parties offered teens and families a lifeline in an era of financial crisis that left much of the borough in crippling poverty. "It was the music that really resonated at the time in New York," said Quentin Morgan, 54, who rolled into the park on his bike to catch the event that's part of a series of festivities commemorating hip-hop's birth. "It was gritty in New York -- barely any laws," he said with a chuckle. "It was a different era." Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five in 1982 released "The Message," delivering a raw portrait of urban life and bringing a socially conscious element to the genre on a grand scale. On Friday night, the air was electric as Flash brought MCs Melle Mel and Scorpio onstage where they delivered a rendition of the iconic hit. That preceded a fierce appearance from MC Sha-Rock, widely considered the first woman to MC during hip-hop's nascent years. And KRS-One, who also hails from the South Bronx, freestyled to a chorus of cheers as Flash scratched and transformed, manipulating the vinyl, using now-standard techniques he pioneered half a century ago. Earlier in the evening as opening acts warmed up the crowd, Coke La Rock -- who on 11 August 1973 joined DJ Kool Herc at the party many musicologists consider hip-hop's official conception -- told AFP that for him, hip-hop and the Bronx are one and the same. "I can't see no division of it," the 68-year-old said, calling offshoots of the genre across the United States and even the world "my kids." "They all my kids, if I'm the patent, they the product." 'Biggest music on earth' Speaking to AFP backstage, Flash said Friday's event was meant to emulate the jams of his youth. "It was recreation -- moms said go outside and play," he said. "Never... did I think it would become part of the biggest music on earth." Organizers also relayed a message from the mayor of New York, as the city officially declared August 4 "Grandmaster Flash Day." Keisha Harmon joined the event with her partner of 27 years -- "my Teenage Love," she said, quoting the rap classic by Slick Rick. She'll be 50 in October: she was born in the Bronx just months after the genre she grew up on. "I have chills, look, goosebumps," she told AFP. "All the songs that are playing -- I'm a mother of seven and I'm a grandmother of eight -- and they take me back to No Kids." She described how the hip-hop jams of her childhood spread by word of mouth: "Hey, DJ-such-and-such is in the park, and we would have parties and sing, and it was just fun." "And this reminds me of that," Harmon added, motioning to the park crowded with partygoers on a humid August evening. The celebration "shows our talent" as citizens of the Bronx, she added. "It shows what we contributed to the arts," Harmon said. "Hip-hop has a substance." "The artists were storytellers." "South South Bronx, South Bronx!" the audience shouted throughout the evening, singing the song by Boogie Down Productions produced by KRS-One and DJ Scott La Rock. According to city organizers, Friday night was Grandmaster Flash's first time playing the Bronx in two decades. Along with fellow hip-hop pioneers, he was joined by a troupe of breakdancers who wowed the audience with a throwdown. "Where's my old-schoolers at?" Flash asked the joyous crowd. "I wanna keep it in the 70s." "Somebody say Bronx!" The post Icon Grandmaster Flash leads the Bronx in 70s-style hip-hop jam appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Bike taxi cap impedes jobs
Transport groups are urging regulators to scrap the limits on the number of motorcycle taxis on the streets amid a spike in demand. In separate statements over the weekend, CitizenWatch Philippines, Bantay Konsyumer, Kalsada, Kuryente or BK3 and The Passenger Forum unilaterally pointed out that removing the limits will also open livelihood opportunities to more Filipinos. CitizenWatch Philippines co-convenor and former Quezon City representative lawyer Kit Belmonte noted that the shortage of transportation options has “resulted in the proliferation of illegal habal-habal, which are being patronized by desperate commuters.” “Because they are unregulated, the drivers of habal-habal do not have proper training and they do not have accident insurance,” Belmonte said. “No less than Senator Raffy Tulfo recommended legalizing habal-habal operations, and even asked MC taxi operators to help train habal-habal riders,” he added. Jobs to more Filipinos Likewise, Belmonte contended that similar to other countries, removing the riders cap will encourage more players to participate and ensure competition for better delivery of services for commuters. Meanwhile, Passenger Forum Convener Primo Morillo, said his group believes “it is about time to do away with the limit for motorcycle taxis as it impedes the potential of motorcycle taxis to serve commuters and provide a livelihood for riders.” “No other than the Philippine Competition Commission recommended the removal of the cap as it will lead to better commuter experience,” Morillo added. While there are no official government statistics on the number of habal-habal nationwide, they were initially estimated to have reached 200,000 in Metro Manila in 2020, during the height of the global health pandemic. Thus, the proliferation of habal-habal has compelled local government units like Cebu City to create an office to regulate their operations. The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board recently urged habal-habal operators, particularly in provinces, to join its pilot study for bike taxis so they can be regulated and trained. LTFRB chief Teofilo Guadiz III previously said that safe and secure operations will “ultimately benefit the riding public.” The post Bike taxi cap impedes jobs appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

I’m working really hard to build back my strength, but touring can be very difficult even when you’re 100%. Bike riders press safer roads for all
One death too many. About 88 cyclists held Saturday a “mass mobility ride” to honor hero traffic enforcer Jeffrey Antolin who died last month in a freak road accident while saving a pedestrian. Calling themselves Mobility Advocates for People-Centered Streets, the bikers rode from the Philippine Science High School at Agham Road to the Ayala Cloverleaf. Antolin died last 23 March when he got run over by a truck along A. Bonifacio Avenue in Quezon City after pushing a pedestrian away from the path of the vehicle. Citing statistics that bicycle owners in the country outnumber car owners by 4 to 1, the group expressed surprise that the government has not updated “car-centric infrastructures and regulations.” They pushed accommodating along roads both pedestrians and non-motorized road users like bikers and scooter riders. Alternative mobility through the use of bikes and scooters is an environmentally sustainable means of transportation if road safety for all users can be assured, they added. The mass ride, they said, is not just to honor Antolin but to press the need for all people to share the road, stop reckless driving and for authorities to implement road regulations. “Recklessness while driving should not be tolerated, and road use and safety policies should be reviewed and properly implemented,” they said in a statement. The cyclists belonged to the Make It Safer Movement, or MISMO, QCklista and PARA, short for Advocates for Inclusive Transport and Road Safety Awareness Campaign. Antolin, 35, was directing traffic flow when a pedestrian did not heed his hand signal not to cross. Seeing that the truck would hit the pedestrian, Antolin pushed the pedestrian out of harm’s way, but he was in turn hit by the truck. The traffic enforcer was pulled from under the truck and was rushed to the MCU Hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival. The truck driver, Joel Dimacali of Tondo, Manila was arrested and charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide. Cyclists bike for road safety in QC
"One death is one too many." With this rallying cry, some 80 cyclists in the metropolis conducted a "mass mobility ride" Saturday afternoon in honor of Jeffrey Antolin, the traffic enforcer killed last month in a freak road accident while trying to save a pedestrian. The activity, themed "Road Safety Now! A Memorial Bike Ride for Hero Traffic Enforcer Jeffrey Antolin," saw the bikers who called themselves Mobility Advocates call for "people-centered streets." Cyclists belonging to the Make It Safer Movement, QCklista and PARA-Advocates for Inclusive Transport for Road Safety Awareness Campaign joined the bike ride that started in front of Philippine Science High School in Agham Road, Quezon City at 3 p.m. The cyclists pedaled up to the Ayala Cloverleaf where a small program was held in honor of Antolin, who was killed on 23 March 2023 while saving a pedestrian from a reckless car driver along the intersection of A. Bonifacio Avenue. The cyclists said the incident "depicts a persistent issue on road safety." "With the latest statistics showing bicycle owners in the country outnumbering car owners by 4 to 1, it is still surprising that the government has not caught up with updating its car-centric infrastructures and regulations to accommodate both pedestrians and non-motorized road users like bikes, e-bikes, e-scooters, etc," the group said in a statement. Their movement, they added, is meant to promote alternative mobility as an environmentally sustainable means of transportation and to advocate for road safety. The mass ride, the group stressed, is not just to commemorate the untimely death and heroic act of Antolin and promote the importance of road safety, "but to instill in the minds of all road users what it means to share the road, that recklessness while driving should not be tolerated and that road use and safety policies should be properly reviewed and implemented." Bong Go pushes anew for Magna Carta for Filipino Seafarers
Sen. Bong Go renewed his push for the passage of his filed Senate Bill No. 1191 which seeks to provide a Magna Carta for Seafarers. The senator, also Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Migrant Workers, cited the significant role of Filipino seafarers in global trade and marine transportation as well as the huge contribution of all overseas Filipino workers to the country's economy. The bill, if passed into law, aims to cover a wide range of issues that usually affect seafarers. It shall help secure the right of the country's seafarers to decent and humane employment and set a guide for seafarers on training, overseas employment, and retirement. “I have been relentless in pursuing the interests and welfare of our overseas Filipino workers, including seafarers. Hanggang ngayon ay patuloy kong ipaglalaban ang kapakanan ng ating mga seafarers dahil hindi po biro ang kanilang trabaho na mapalayo sa kanilang mga pamilya para lang mabigyan sila ng mas magandang kinabukasan,” expressed Go. “The Philippines has been the primary source of maritime labor and considered the manning capital of seafarers globally since 1987. Of the 1.5 million mariners worldwide, 25% are Filipino sea-based workers, making them the single biggest nationality bloc in the maritime industry,” he cited previously. In an open letter of the United Filipino Seafarers Labor Federation to President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. and to senators, published recently, the group reiterated its support for the passage of House Bill No. 7325, also known as the Magna Carta for Seafarers. It also sought for better protection for seafarers, particularly regarding settlement of various employment-related claims. “Katulad ng pagsuporta natin sa mga OFWs hanggang sa naisabatas ang panukalang nagtatag sa Department of Migrant Workers, nais ko rin na mabigyan natin ng kaukulang suporta at proteksyon ang ating mga seafarers, kung merong Magna Carta para sa kanila, mas mabibigyan natin sila ng proteksyon at mas maraming suporta,” said Go. Meanwhile, Go thanked the European Commission (EC) after its decision to continue recognizing certificates issued by the Philippines that will allow Filipino seafarers to continue working on European Union (EU)-flagged ships. It can be recalled that in December 2021, EC informed the Philippine government that the recognition of its seafarer certificates would be withdrawn unless serious measures were taken, including compliance with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) for seafarers. The senator then underscored that the proposed Magna Carta for Seafarers is particularly crucial for protecting the rights and welfare of seafarers in situations where they are vulnerable or exploited, such as during emergencies, accidents, or conflicts. The Magna Carta seeks to systematize the rights of the seafarers into a single reference law, including their right to just terms and conditions of work, self-organization, educational advancement and training, information and consultation, fair treatment in the event of an accident, and against discrimination. It also aims to provide standard terms and conditions of employment for seafarers, including provisions related to wages, hours of work and rest, leaves, and social welfare benefits. If enacted, it shall likewise mandate ship owners to provide medical care, both on-board and ashore, as well as a financial security system to assist our seafarers in case of injuries. Believing that all Filipino migrant workers, including seafarers, should be given the necessary support and benefits that they rightfully deserve, Go was instrumental in the enactment of Republic Act No. 11641, creating the DMW. The Senate version of the Act, Senate Bill No. 2234, was co-authored and co-sponsored by Go. DMW serves as the lead agency for implementing policies, plans and programs that will ensure the protection, promotion of interests, timely resolution of problems, and effective reintegration of OFWs. Seafarers Magna Carta pushed
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go maintains the crucial role of seafarers in the global economy as he continues to push for Senate Bill 1191, which seeks to provide a Magna Carta for Filipino Seafarers in line with his commitment to promote their welfare and protect their rights before, during and after employment. The proposed measure aims to cover a wide range of issues that usually affect seafarers. If passed into law, it shall help secure the right of the country’s seafarers to decent and humane employment and set a guide for seafarers on training, overseas employment, and retirement. “The Philippines has been the primary source of maritime labor and considered the manning capital of seafarers globally since 1987. In another development, Go last Wednesday responded to the needs of fire victims in Parañaque City as he personally led a relief operation for them in Barangay Don Galo. To ensure that all necessary support are given to the affected households, Go coordinated with the officials in the city, including Congressman Edwin Olivarez, Mayor Eric Olivarez, Vice Mayor Joan Villafuerte, Don Galo Punong Barangay Marilyn Burgos, and La Huerta Punong Barangay Peter Augustine “PA” Velasco, among others.
