Greece to stagger Acropolis visitors from September: officials
Greece from September will stagger and cap visitors to the Acropolis, its most-visited site, to reduce massive queues and bottlenecks at peak hours, the culture ministry said Wednesday. The new time-slot system would be introduced on a "trial basis" on September 4, it said in a statement. Daily visits at the monument will also be capped at 20,000, and visitors will be assigned to hourly times-lots during the 12 hours that the Acropolis is open each day, it said. The move is designed to protect the 2,500-year-old monument and "improve the experience for visitors," the ministry said, noting that up to 23,000 people turned up at the Acropolis in recent weeks. A similar system at other Greek archaeological sites will be introduced from April 1, Culture Minister Lina Mendoni told Real FM radio. According to the Greek state statistics agency Elstat, over three million people visited the Acropolis last year, up from 1.2 million in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic. Authorities in July repeatedly limited visiting hours at the Acropolis, as the country sweltered under a two-week heatwave. Greece is counting on tourism to boost its economy after its near-decade debt crisis. Officials hope to exceed the 31.3 million arrivals recorded in 2019, a record year for the country. Tourist numbers visiting Greece are ticking up to levels rivalling pre-pandemic times as the world witnesses a resurgence in demand for leisure travel. DoT unveils new tourism slogan: ‘Love the Philippines’
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has affirmed his commitment to advancing the tourism industry in the Philippines as the sector serves as a major driver of economic growth and job creation in the country. The Chief Executive said this in a speech at the Department of Tourism's 50th anniversary celebration on Tuesday as the department unveiled the country’s new tourism slogan called “Love the Philippines." In his speech, he remained committed to making the Philippines a "tourism powerhouse in Asia” as his administration aims to promote the country's natural beauty and rich culture to the rest of the world. "This prioritization goes deeper than merely stimulating economic activities and generating job opportunities," Marcos said. "It springs from the genuine love that I and all of us have for the Filipinos." The DOT's new campaign slogan is part of the agency's National Tourism Development Plan for 2023-2028, which aims to make the Philippines a tourism powerhouse in Asia. The plan includes a number of initiatives to promote the country's tourism products and services, including regional tourism, infrastructure development and sustainability. Marcos also called on the entire Filipino nation to be tourism ambassadors for the Philippines. "Let us take pride and celebrate the love we have of our country and our people," he said. "For it is the same love that gave meaning to the establishment of the DOT and the same love that will propel our tourism industry moving forward into the future." The DOT was established in 1973 by then-President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. The department is responsible for promoting the Philippines as a tourist destination and for developing the country's tourism industry. According to the 2022 Philippine Tourism Satellite Accounts for 2022, the Tourism Direct Gross Value Added share of the sector to the Philippine economy, as measured by the Gross Domestic Product, was estimated at 6.2 percent and amounted to P1.38 trillion in 2022. Further, the country is seeing a boost in tourism-related enterprise employment, with 5.35 million estimated tourism employment last year. In terms of arrivals, the DOT’s data show that the country has recorded 2,641,993 visitors from 1 January to 26 June 2023, and is close to breaching the 2.65 million arrivals it recorded for 2022. Thailand Moves a Step Closer to Welcoming Back Foreign Tourists
Thailand will start issuing special visas to foreign tourists starting October, easing a more than five-month-old ban on visitors to revive the nation’s ailing tourism-reliant economy. Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Ocha’s cabinet approved a proposal to issue visas to tourists planning to stay between 90 and 280 days in Thailand, according to government spokeswoman Traisuree Taisaranakul. The tourists will undergo a mandatory 14-day state quarantine on arrival at partner hotels or hospitals and follow health and safety regulations, she said. The government expects about 1,200 visitors to avail themselves of these visas each month, generating about 1.2 billion baht ($38.5 million) in revenue. The easing of border restrictions may boost the nation’s pandemic-battered tourism industry and cushion the blow to an economy projected to contract 8.5% this year. The news of cabinet approval for special visas triggered a rally among hotel and travel operators in Bangkok. A measure of Thai tourism and leisure stocks jumped 4.5%, the biggest gainer among the Stock Exchange of Thailand’s 28 industry groups. It was also the index’s largest increase since May 26. While Hotel operators Erawan Group Pcl and Central Plaza Hotel Pcl surged more than 8%, Minor International Pcl advanced 5.5%. Thailand’s tourism and hospitality sectors are counting on the return of international visitors, who contributed to two-thirds of tourism income before the pandemic, to reverse the slump in businesses and save millions of jobs. A government campaign to boost travel by locals through hotel and air travel concessions has failed to make up for the slump in earnings, but the move to allow foreigners in small batches will still be a relief to the industry. “There will not be a huge economic impact from this as it still can’t compensate for the revenue lost, but it will help,” Somprawin Manprasert, chief economist at Bank of Ayudhya Pcl said. “This plan still targets a higher-spending group of foreign visitors which will not benefit tourism industry operators that have lower to mid-price points, who will still suffer.” The move to relax curbs on foreign tourists also follows Thailand’s relative success in containing the coronavirus outbreak. The nation went without a local transmission for 100 days before the virus-free run was ended early this month. Though Thailand was the first country outside China to report the deadly virus, its cumulative cases stand at 3,480 with most patients already discharged from hospitals. The reopening to foreign tourists may be risky, but it is a manageable risk worth taking, Bank of Thailand’s Senior Director Don Nakornthab wrote in an article on the central bank’s website. The country may be headed for a second straight year of contraction in 2021 if it continued to restrict foreign visitor arrivals, Don wrote......»»
Philippines-Korea are 'new and old school' basketball says Ratliffe
For someone who is neither Filipino or South Korean — by birth that is — Ricardo Ratfliffe sure has a pretty unique relationship with the two eternal Asian basketball rivals. After more than half a decade of playing as an import for the Korean Basketball League, Ratfliffe found himself in the PBA, playing a couple of stints for the Star Hotshots in back-to-back Commissioner's Cups. Ratliffe's PBA stints ended up being short, as he eventually got naturalized to play for the South Korean national team. Exposed to the basketball style of two different countries, Ratliffe says that there's a distinct contrast between the Philippines and South Korea. "I think the style of play in the Philippines is more like American style. It's more flashy and entertaining. I feel like you guys are going with the evolution," Ratliffe said on a recent appearance on 2OT with PBA broadcasters Magoo Marjon and Carlo Pamintuan. "In Korea, I think it's more of an old school style. People don't go out of their element. The Philippines is more like new school and I think Korea is more old school," he added. In about three years as a national team member, Ratliffe has become part of the ongoing Philippines-South Korea basketball saga. Ratliffe has two signature moments so far, the first was in the 2018 Asian Games when his squad took down a Gilas Pilipinas team led by Jordan Clarkson. [Related: Before 2018 Asiad meeting, Clarkson and Ratliffe actually go way back] The second came on the final day of the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers. Ratliffe willed Korea to win a non-bearing road game against Lebanon, with the victory becoming the help the Philippines needed to advance to the World Championships. As if he wasn't popular enough among Filipino fans, that Korea win made Ratliffe all the more appreciated in the Philippines. "I think I had like about a thousand DMs [on Instagram]," Ratliffe recalled. "Right after the game I posted the Philippine flag with a heart on my story, so that everyone knew I was going out there to give it my all and I did. I thought I played decent, I didn't play my best game but I gave it my best," he added. [Related: Gilas has nemesis Korea to thank for FIBA World Cup berth] While he's become a legend in his own right in South Korea, Ratliffe says he won't hesitate to take his talents back to the PBA if given the chance in the future. Ratliffe never played a full conference with the Hotshots, but his arrivals always did boost the team. "I think it was a match made in heaven [with the Hotshots]," Ratliffe said. "I'm appreciative of the organization, the fans, and the whole country. If I didn't get the [Korean] passport, I'm going to the Philippines every season after I'm done with Korea until I retire. That was my plan," he added. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
