Cavs, Warriors stars lead first fan returns of ASG voting

em>NBA press release /em> NEW YORK -- LeBron James and Kyrie Irving of the defending NBA champion Cleveland Cavaliers are the top two vote-getters overall, while Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors lead all Western Conference players in the first fan returns of NBA All-Star Voting 2017 presented by Verizon. The first week of fan voting for the 66th NBA All-Star Game, which will take place on Sunday, Feb. 19 (Feb. 20, PHL time) at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, produced close races in both conferences and generated 138% more votes cast (11,174,153) than during the same time period last year (4,693,433). James, a 12-time All-Star, received 595,288 votes to earn the top spot among all players. Joining James at the top of the Eastern Conference frontcourt are the Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo (500,663) and Cleveland’s Kevin Love (250,347), with rookie Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers (221,984) next on the list. Irving (543,030) and 12-time All-Star Dwyane Wade of the Chicago Bulls (278,052) lead the East guards, followed by the Toronto Raptors’ DeMar DeRozan (253,340). Durant, who owns the highest scoring average in All-Star Game history (25.6 ppg), paces all West players with 541,209 votes. He is followed in the West frontcourt by Golden State’s Zaza Pachulia (439,675) and the San Antonio Spurs’ Kawhi Leonard (341,240), who edges the New Orleans Pelicans’ Anthony Davis (318,144).  Curry (523,597) narrowly tops a tight race among West guards, with the Houston Rockets’ James Harden (519,446) edging two-time reigning All-Star Game MVP Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma City Thunder (501,652) for second place. For the first time ever, NBA players and basketball media will join fans in selecting the starters for the NBA All-Star Game. Fans will account for 50 percent of the vote, while all current players and a media panel will account for 25 percent each.  Player and media voting will begin next week, with each participant completing one full ballot featuring two guards and three frontcourt players from both conferences.  After all votes are tallied, players will be ranked in each conference by position (guard and frontcourt) within each of the three voting groups – fan votes, player votes and media votes.  Each player’s score will be calculated by averaging his weighted rank from the fan votes, the player votes and the media votes.  The five players (two guards and three frontcourt players) with the best score in each conference will be named NBA All-Star Game starters. Fan voting will serve as the tiebreaker for players in a position group with the same score. All-Stars LeBron, Irving lead Cavs past Suns

em>By Tom Withers, Associated Press /em> CLEVELAND -- Kyrie Irving scored 26 points, All-Star teammate LeBron James had 21 points and 15 assists, and the Cleveland Cavaliers looked more like themselves at home in a 118-103 win over the Phoenix Suns on Thursday night (Friday, PHL time). The Cavs were back in Quicken Loans Arena following a six-game road trip (their longest of the season) that concluded with an embarrassing 35-point loss at Golden State. But on their home floor, they had better offensive balance and ball movement while improving to 30-11 -- the same record Cleveland had at the halfway point of its 2016 NBA championship season. Channing Frye scored 18, Iman Shumpert 17 and James Jones 14 while filling in for star forward Kevin Love, still bothered by back spasms. Tyson Chandler had 22 points and 16 rebounds, but the Suns lost for the fourth time in five games. Already thin on their front line with Love out, the Cavs lost forward Tristan Thompson in the second quarter with a dislocated left index finger. However, Thompson returned after halftime. And Cleveland's offense was in a much better rhythm from the start after a trip that wasn't always pleasing to the eye. While trying to integrate newly acquired Kyle Korver into their rotation on the road, the Cavs got into some bad habits as they forced passes to one of the league's best shooters. A couple of practices seem to have helped as Korver made a pair of three-pointers in the second quarter of his home debut to help Cleveland open a 21-point lead. The Suns made a brief run in the third and got within 12 before Shumpert hit a pair of three’s and Jones hit one from long range. strong>TIP-INS /strong> em> strong>Suns: /strong> /em> Chandler has at least 15 rebounds in six straight games, matching the club record set by Jim Fox in 1969. I sent him a lot of money every month,' Watson said with a smile. 'I'm glad I don't do that anymore.' On a serious note, Watson said Korver is a perfect addition for Cleveland, especially while J.R. Smith recovers from thumb surgery. 'He's a deadly knock-down shooter. He knows how to win,' Watson said. 'They're looking more long term instead of immediate. You get into the playoffs and you need a big three to stretch the floor. He's obviously the best shooter on their team. It's an impressive move.' em> strong>Cavaliers: /strong> /em>James, who missed his 46th career triple-double by one rebound, will be making his 13th consecutive All-Star Game appearance next month. 'Means I'm consistent and taking pride in my individual ability to go out and produce for the team every night, and whatever team I've been on in my career. It's always great to see my name up there with the best guys in the league, so it's a pretty cool thing.' Smith has had the hard cast removed from his right hand. He's expected back in late March. MEXICO CITY (AP) Devin Booker scored a career-high 39 points for the second straight game in Mexico City and the Phoenix Suns beat the San Antonio Spurs 108-105 on Saturday in the fifth regular-season game in the country. An NBA franchise in Mexico is not yet on the horizon

em>By Carlos Rodriguez, Associated Press /em> MEXICO CITY (AP) — An NBA franchise in Mexico City? Not so fast. A couple of days after the Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said that he was in favor of a team playing south of the border, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said Saturday that it will not happen, at least not in the immediate future. Before the Mavericks beat the Phoenix Suns on Thursday night (Friday, PHL time) in Mexico City, Cuban said that a team in Mexico would help the sport, while he praised the Arena Ciudad de Mexico and added that the distance from the United States isn't a factor. Mexico City's governor, Miguel Angel Mancera, has also said that he's in favor of the idea. 'The next step before we start talking about a franchise in Mexico City is to bring more games here, and we have this two regular-season games and whether we bring additional regular-season games next season or do some sort of tournament with several teams playing each other, that is something that we are looking at,' Silver said a press conference before the Spurs and Suns took the court. Including preseason, Mexico has hosted 24 NBA games since 1992, that's more than any country besides the United States and Canada. 'In terms of a franchise here in Mexico City, it is something to look at,' Silver said. 'Obviously, it's an incredible market with over 20 million people, the largest market in North America and, while we have no immediate plans to expand, one of the things that we look at, it's whether expanding will be additive to the league as a whole and clearly coming to Mexico City, not just because the population of the city but as a gateway to the rest of Latin America could potentially be very important for the league.' The game Saturday (Sunday, PHL time) was fifth regular-season game in the country. Four of them have been played in Area Ciudad de Mexico, a glass-clad state of the art arena that was built in 2012 that hosts over 20,000 fans. 'As I said before there's no market more important for us than Mexico, we already have discussions earlier today about bringing other games here,' Silver said. 'But ultimately it will make more sense to bring more teams rather than just have two teams play each other for a single event to maybe bring multiple teams and to have some sort of midseason tournament, sort of like a round-robin tournament.' .....»»

Popovich's Spurs are back in Mexico after a bad experience

CARLOS RODRIGUEZ, Associated Press br /> MEXICO CITY (AP) — The last time that the San Antonio Spurs visited Mexico to play a regular-season game, the contest was canceled because of smoky conditions from a malfunctioning generator. So probably it's not surprising to find out that coach Gregg Popovich had only one wish ahead of the Spurs' game Saturday against the Phoenix Suns, set to be played on the same venue. 'I just want the game to come along. It felt horrible the last time we were here, everybody did so much work and everybody was excited to see the game and then it didn't happen,' said Popovich upon his arrival at the team's hotel in Mexico City. On Dec. 4, 2013, the Spurs were warming up, around 45 minutes before their game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, when the lights went out in parts of the arena and smoke began coming out of vents in the upper deck. The court quickly became cloudy and players and coaches were rushed outside the arena. The game was rescheduled and played at Minnesota. 'It was nobody's fault but it was kind of depressing for everybody so hopefully this time we get it done and put on a show for everybody', Popovich said. The Spurs have been doing that in the NBA recently. On Thursday night, they beatthe Los Angeles Lakers 134-94 for their largest margin of victory this season. The game was so lopsided that the starters didn't play in the fourth quarter and every player on the roster scored at least two points. 'All of our players will not score every night, I can promise you that', Popovich said. San Antonio arrives to Mexico boasting a 31-8 record, the second-best mark in the NBA just behind the Golden State Warriors (34-6). The game against the Suns will be the fifth regular season game played in Mexico. Phoenix also played in Mexico City on Thursday night, falling 113-108 to the Dallas Mavericks. .....»»

Spurs stretch streak to nine after making quick work of Hornets

SAN ANTONIO (AP) Davis Bertans scored a season-high 21 points to help the San Antonio Spurs overcome a sluggish start and beat the Charlotte Hornets 102-85 on Saturday night. San Antonio has won nine straight at home and 13 of 15 overall. Kawhi Leonard added 19 points and LaMarcus Aldridge had 15 points and 11 rebounds, but Bertans ignited the Spurs. San Antonio is 13-0 when Bertans scores a point and he was 4 for 5 on 3-pointers in leading the Spurs in scoring for the first time this season. San Antonio needed the rookie's energy in the second half to counter Kemba Walker. The Hornets point guard had 18 points, shooting 4 for 5 from 3-point range. Bertans energized the sold-out crowd with back-to-back 3-pointers late in the third quarter, extending the Spurs' lead to 68-60. His first 3 resulted in a four-point play when Frank Kaminsky closed late defensively and nearly knocked over the 6-foot-10 forward from Latvia. Bertans' fourth 3-pointer caused the Spurs' bench to leap in excitement, signaling the shot with three fingers in the air. San Antonio committed only three turnovers in the first half, which did not result in any points, but still trailed 50-47 in a sluggish effort. Green, Parker help Spurs rally to beat Trail Blazers

em>By Raul Dominguez, Associated Press /em> SAN ANTONIO (AP) — In the midst of another dispirited effort, San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich decided not to yell at the Spurs — and they responded as he hoped. Danny Green and Tony Parker each had 18 points and San Antonio overcame another listless first half to beat the Portland Trail Blazers 110-94 on Friday night (Saturday, PHL time). 'Sometimes I go crazy, sometimes I decide to just sit and let them figure it out,' Popovich said. 'It just depends on how I'm feeling, how I think the game might go, or who's on the court at the time. Tonight, I wanted them to see what was going on for themselves. They did a good job of it.' The Spurs won their ninth game after trailing by 10-plus points, falling behind by 13 in the first half against the Trail Blazers. San Antonio forward Kawhi Leonard sat out his second straight game with a stomach virus and Portland point guard Damian Lillard missed his third consecutive game with an injured left ankle. Even when Leonard has played, the Spurs' first-half struggles have made things difficult. San Antonio is at a loss to understand why that is. 'I don't know,' Parker said. 'If I knew, I would not do it. No idea.' Despite the struggles, the Spurs have won four straight and 13 of 15. San Antonio had another sluggish first half, trailing by double-digits for 12 minutes and falling behind by 13 points midway through the second quarter. Portland forced 14 turnovers and shot 51 percent from the field through two quarters. 'We've got to do a better job of coming out with more of an edge to the game,' said Spurs center Pau Gasol, who finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. 'Teams know we've been having the slow starts and they play with confidence. Then we turn it up and win games, but it's something we need to keep in mind going forward so that it's not something that is repetitive or too repetitive.' C.J. McCollum finished with 29 points for Portland. Maurice Harkless and Allen Crabbe were the only others in double figures, with Harkless finishing with 12, and Crabbe 11. The Trail Blazers shot 43 percent in the third quarter after shooting 51 percent in the first half. Spurs reserve Manu Ginobili's second three-pointer with 3:49 remaining in the third quarter gave San Antonio a 69-67 lead, its first since holding an 11-8 edge 3 minutes into the game. San Antonio had seven three-pointers in the second half to win their seventh straight at home. LaMarcus Aldridge was held to eight points on 2-for-3 shooting, but Jonathon Simmons added 19 points for the Spurs. Green had six three-pointers in scoring a season-high. 'Today their strategy obviously was they were not going to let LaMarcus go off,' Parker said. 'In the last two games LaMarcus has been scoring a lot and been playing unbelievable. That's their strategy and other guys stepped up.' strong>TIP-INS /strong> em> strong>Trail Blazers: /strong> /em> Lillard missed his third straight game after playing in the team's first 32. He leads the team in scoring with 27.0 points and in assists at 6.2 per game. Portland entered Friday (Saturday, PHL time) allowing 111.5 points per game and 38 percent on 3-pointers, which are both 28th in the league. F/C Mason Plumlee had his streak of two straight double-doubles stopped. Plumlee had eight points and five rebounds. em> strong>Spurs: /strong> /em> Green has 33 games with at least five three-pointers, the most in franchise history. San Antonio finished 2016 at 66-15, its most successful calendar year in franchise history. The Spurs are 13-0 when Parker scores in double figures. strong>STILL HELPING OUT /strong> After shooting 25-for-32 and scoring 60 points in his previous two games, Aldridge was limited to three attempts against Portland. 'They double-teamed him all the time,' Popovich said. 'So, you can pretty much take a player out of the game if you do that. So, they decided to do that, and he did a good job getting rid of the ball when he figured it out.' Aldridge only had one assist, but his passes helped set up San Antonio's 11 three-pointers. strong>LEARNING FROM THE MASTER /strong> McCollum said he spent the offseason studying film of Parker's mid-range jumper after taking a step to his left away from a defender. The shot helped McCollum shoot 10-for-19 against the Spurs. strong>UP NEXT /strong> em> strong>Trail Blazers: /strong> /em>At Minnesota on Sunday night (Monday, PHL time). em> strong>Spurs: /strong> /em> At Atlanta on Sunday night (Monday, PHL time). .....»»
