FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried jailed after bail revoked
A US federal judge on Friday ordered FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried back to prison after prosecutors argued he had violated the conditions of his bail and tampered with witnesses, less than two months before his trial. Bankman-Fried, 31, has pleaded not guilty to charges of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, as well as election finance violations, in connection with the spectacular collapse of his cryptocurrency firm. US District Judge Lewis Kaplan directed Bankman-Fried back into federal custody citing "probable cause... that the defendant has committed the federal crime of attempted witness tampering," the ruling said. Prosecutors argued that Bankman-Fried's activities as a source for The New York Times amounted to witness intimidation, citing an article containing private writings of Caroline Ellison, who formerly worked at Alameda Research. Ellison, who was romantically involved with Bankman-Fried, is a cooperating witness in the government's case. Bankman-Fried is due to go on trial in early October. FTX and its sister trading house Alameda Research went bankrupt in November, dissolving a virtual trading business that at one point had been valued by the market at $32 billion. Prosecutors allege Bankman-Fried -- who had been released on $250 million bail and confined to his parents' California home before Friday's ruling -- cheated investors and misused funds that belonged to FTX and Alameda Research clients. The former FTX chief had appeared on the covers of finance and tech magazines, with Fortune likening him to Warren Buffett, and drew in huge investments from prominent fund managers and venture capitalists. But it all imploded dramatically in when a media report said Alameda's balance sheet was heavily built on a token created by FTX with no independent value -- and exposed Bankman-Fried's companies as being dangerously interlinked. Bankman-Fried was arrested at his apartment in the Bahamas on 12 December at the request of federal prosecutors in New York. A Bahamas permanent resident, he spent nine days in prison, weighing his choices before deciding not to fight extradition to the United States. U.S. shootings leave 5 dead, dozens wounded
Six shooting incidents in the United States over the weekend killed five people and wounded dozens, local reports said. In Willowbrook, Illinois, at least 23 people were shot, one fatally, early Sunday in a suburban Chicago parking lot where hundreds of people had gathered to celebrate Juneteenth, authorities said, according to NPR. A number of people fired multiple shots into the crowd, the DuPage County sheriff’s office said. Juneteenth is a federal holiday on Monday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas in 1865. In the Roseland community in Chicago, also in Illinois, a car drove up on a group of people holding a Father’s Day barbecue in a park and opened fire, hitting five people, Sunday night, police said. The victims were young adults and were taken to several hospitals, 5th District Commander Tyrone Pendarvis said, according to Chicago Tribune. In Washington state, two people were killed and two others were injured when a shooter began firing “randomly” into a crowd at a campground where many people were staying to attend a nearby music festival on Saturday night, police said, NPR reported. The suspect was shot by responding police officers and taken into custody. In central Pennsylvania, a gunman attacked a state police barracks killing one trooper and critically wounding another. The suspect drove his truck into the parking lot of the Lewistown barracks about 11 a.m. Saturday and opened fire with a large-caliber rifle on marked patrol cars before fleeing, NPR quoted authorities as saying on Sunday. The suspect was later spotted by a police helicopter and killed in a shootout with officers. In St. Louis, Missouri, a shooting in a downtown office building killed a 17-year-old and wounded nine other teenagers who were partying at 1 a.m. Sunday, according to the city’s police commissioner. The wounded were 15 to 19 years old. Police arrested the shooter, a minor, and seized an AR-style rifles and other firearms at the scene. Another shooting at a pool party in Carson, California home past midnight left eight people wounded, authorities said Saturday. The victims range in age from 16 to 24, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement, according to NPR. In Baltimore, Maryland, six people were wounded in shootings at around 9 p.m. on Friday. The post U.S. shootings leave 5 dead, dozens wounded appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
LA art exhibition on Middle East women opens amid US reproductive rights row
An exhibition of work by female artists on women in the Middle East opens in California this weekend, as a fierce battle over women's reproductive rights grips the United States. "Women Defining Women in Contemporary Art of the Middle East and Beyond" brings together the creations of 42 female artists, depicting what curators say are the personal and universal stories of women in Islamic societies, and aims to challenge stereotypes about this part of the world. "So many people think that all women are the same in Middle Eastern lands, they're all oppressed, they are invisible, they have horrible lives," curator Linda Komaroff told AFP. "And it's not true. It's like women everywhere. They have a good deal of agency and they act upon it." Exhibits come from all over the Middle East and beyond but include a number from Iran, which has been shaken in recent months after the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, a young woman arrested for allegedly not properly wearing the compulsory veil. One powerful picture by Iranian photojournalist Newsha Tavakolian shows an Iranian woman in traditional clothes -- also wearing a pair of boxing gloves. Another, by Shirin Aliabadi, showcases the irrepressible spirit of a younger generation, depicting a woman whose blonde wig pokes out from under her scarf as she blows a bubble with gum. The exhibition comes as the United States has been thrown into tumult over the issue of abortion after the US Supreme Court last year struck down the constitutional right to terminate a pregnancy. On Friday the same court is set to wade into the legal battle over the abortion drug mifepristone after a Texan judge issued a ruling that would ban this widely used medication. Komaroff said the ongoing fight over abortion rights in the United States meant this was a timely exhibition. "Things are kind of going downhill for women in America in terms of our own control over our own bodies," she said. "American women have been complacent. It's easy for them to look to another country or another region and say, 'We're better off than they are.' "But maybe we're not. Maybe we're all in the same boat together." The exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) opens Sunday and runs until 24 September.
