Balmain races to recover from robbery at Paris Fashion Week
The fashion world loves drama but normally it does not involve violent robberies, so there is outsize attention on Wednesday's Balmain show after the French label had 50 outfits stolen just days earlier. Balmain's creative director Olivier Rousteing announced on September 17 that a driver had been "hijacked" on the way from a Paris airport to the house's headquarters by a gang of thieves who stole 50 outfits. He and his team have since been racing to put together a collection for the show on Wednesday night. There were no signs of panic from Rousteing on Tuesday when he posted a video from his workshop showing the finishing touches being put to a dress that looked like a pink garden trestle with blue flowers climbing over it. He added the apparently ironic comment: "Florals for spring? Groundbreaking..." Paris Fashion Week kicked off on Monday and runs to 3 October, with 107 brands presenting, of which 67 are giving runway shows. One of the first big names was Pierre Cardin, which has returned to the official Paris lineup this year for the first time in a quarter-century. Its show was full of retro space-age outfits that harked back to its glory days, but the relatives of Cardin, who died in 2020, are currently tearing each other apart in court over the inheritance. "My uncle gave me the mission to perpetuate the house and its style," Rodrigo Basilicati-Cardin, who is currently overseeing the label, said backstage. "If the brand is sold, it will be the end of the house. I am confident the court decisions will ensure continuity," he added. Among the other highlights so far was the latest collection from Dior on Tuesday, which saw the walls of the show plastered with mock sexist slogans from old adverts, such as "Save your marriage -- iron properly". The collection by Maria Grazia Chiuri, who recently dressed Queen Camilla for her state dinner at Versailles, was a largely monochrome affair with comfortable, breezy items alongside straight masculine jackets, pleated skirts, and plenty of knitwear. Coming later this week are the final shows for two big-name designers. Gabriela Hearst is leaving Chloe after fewer than three years. Her focus on sustainable fashion was critically acclaimed but did not bring a major boost to sales. It will also be the last show for Sarah Burton, who took over at Alexander McQueen following the founder's suicide in 2010. Kylie Minogue: having young fans is ‘alarming and exciting’
A viral TikTok hit this summer means Kylie Minogue has added another cohort to her multi-generational fan base -- many of them so young they have never heard the hits that made her a star. "Padam Padam", the first single from the new album "Tension", which is out on Friday, has put Minogue back on dance floors around the world more than 35 years after she first broke out. It has also seen youngsters around the world recreating the dance routine from the video on TikTok -- a new experience for the Australian star. "To have this new generation loving it -- they're so open-minded and accepting of me at my age -- it gives me more energy," the 55-year-old told AFP during a visit to Paris. "It's funny because I see people who have discovered me through 'Padam' and they've never heard of 'Locomotion' or 'Can't Get You Out of My Head', which is alarming but also exciting," she said. Minogue was just 19 when she released "Locomotion" in 1987, transforming her from daytime soap actress on Australian show 'Neighbours' to international pop star. Her place was confirmed with follow-up single "I Should Be So Lucky" that propelled debut album "Kylie" to more than five million sales. That was just the start. Her record company says she has sold more than 80 million records and had more than five billion streams across her career. - 'Crazy things' - The title "Padam Padam" had many in France wondering if Kylie was covering the famous song of the same name by Edith Piaf but she admits the similarities start and end with the name. "A lot of crazy things have happened to me in my life and that's another one -- being linked in the same sentence as Edith Piaf," she said with a laugh. "I did wonder if the French would be 'd'accord'," she added. The singer was able to judge the warm reception in France at a listening party for the album at a Paris club last week. Lucky attendees were surprised to see her come down from the stage to dance in the audience, dressed like Little Red Riding Hood and perched on high heels that she kicked off to move more freely. Having another pop hit in her mid-fifties was a surprise, she said. "I was completely blown away... Every song release, I have nerves and excitement, but I can honestly say I did not see this coming." As always in her career, "Padam Padam" has been a particular hit in LGBT clubs. Her gay fan base dates back to her earliest days -- she remembers the first time she heard about a "Kylie Night" at a club on Sydney's Oxford Street. "I've since been to the drag shows and I'm the least Kylie there. There are these supersonic versions of me. I couldn't compete!" she said. pgr/er/gil © Agence France-Presse The post Kylie Minogue: having young fans is ‘alarming and exciting’ appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
NSYNC to release first new song in decades for ‘Trolls’ movie
American boy band NSYNC has reunited for their first new song in over 20 years, which will be featured in the upcoming movie "Trolls Band Together." "Back in the Studio. Better Place out 9/29," the group posted on social media Thursday, alongside a video of all five members recording their vocals. The last studio album released by turn-of-the-millennium heartthrobs Justin Timberlake, Joey Fatone, JC Chasez, Lance Bass and Chris Kirkpatrick was 2001's "Celebrity." "If we do this song it's a love letter to our fans," Timberlake said in the video posted to X. "Wait, that's the first NSYNC song finished in 23 years," Bass added. Timberlake voices a lead character in the "Trolls" film trilogy, with the third installment coming to US theaters in November. The new movie features a boy band storyline. NSYNC's members reunited onstage this week for the first time in a decade to present Taylor Swift with the Best Pop award at the MTV Video Music Awards. OPEC output limits spark oil price surge
Diesel vehicle owners should brace for another shocker on Tuesday as the price of the fuel will rise by nearly P4 per liter. Petroleum distributor Unioil, in an advisory, said motorists should expect fuel prices to remain on the uptrend until 14 August. “Diesel will increase by P3.70 to P3.90 per liter. Gasoline will increase by P0.20 to P0.40 per liter. Load up accordingly,” Unioil advised. Kerosene prices, on the other hand, will rise by P2.70 to P3 per liter. Department of Energy Director Rino Abad attributed the uptrend in prices to production cuts by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, or OPEC, while Russia may also cut production in September. In the last four weeks, diesel prices rose by P6.80 per liter, gasoline by P5.35 per liter, and kerosene by P5.90 per liter. Saudi Arabia, in a report from Reuters, said it will extend a voluntary oil output cut of one million barrels per day, or bpd, for a third month. The limited production will last until September, and may be extended beyond that month, the Reuters report said. Saudi Arabia’s fuel production is expected to be around 9 million bpd in September. Cuts remain Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said Russia would cut oil exports by 300,000 bpd in September. The announced cuts follow moves in June by OPEC and its allies like Russia, collectively known as OPEC+, to limit the oil supply into 2024, the report stated. Oil prices rose to fresh three-month highs on Tuesday, as signs of tighter supplies and pledges by Chinese authorities to shore up the world’s second-largest economy lifted sentiment, according to Luis Limlingan, head of sales at Regina Capital Development Corp. Brent crude settled 90 cents at $83.64 per barrel, or /bbl, after hitting $83.87 earlier, the highest since 19 April. US West Texas Intermediate crude rose 89 cents to $79.63. A committee of major oil producers recommended Friday to keep the cartel’s current output strategy unchanged after heavyweights Saudi Arabia and Russia extended their cuts despite recovering prices. Oil prices picked up in recent months due to high demand coupled with tighter supply, sending the price for Brent crude up to $85 a barrel — its highest level in over three months. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, oil peaked at more than $130 per barrel. In a virtual meeting, the group’s Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee “reaffirmed the commitment of its member countries” to the production reduction strategy “which extends to the end of 2024,” a press statement said. Recently, signs have emerged that supply cuts are starting to have the desired effect despite concerns about the health of the global economy. However, Saudi Arabia is expected to “gradually withdraw the voluntary cut over the coming months” and return to the agreed production level of ten million bpd to avoid “considerable revenue shortfalls and dampening economic growth,” said Commerzbank analyst Carsten Fritsch. The next JMMC meeting is set for 4 October, according to a statement from the group. The JMMC has no decision-making power but discusses market conditions and makes recommendations, which are then formally discussed and decided at the organization’s ministerial meetings. The group’s next ministerial meeting is scheduled for 26 November. The post OPEC output limits spark oil price surge appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Diesel, kerosene prices up by over P3 next week
A big-time oil price hike awaits motorists this coming week, a petroleum player forecasted on Saturday. In its forecast, Unioil said motorists expect fuel prices to go up next week (1 to 7 August 2023). “Diesel will increase by P3.20 to P3.40 per liter, while gasoline will increase by P1.70 to P1.90 per liter,” the announcement read. On the other hand, experts said prices of kerosene, used by some households in cooking, may increase by P2.90 to P3.20 per liter. Production cuts The big-time price hike was due to the production cuts in Saudi Arabia and Russia, according to experts. Earlier this July, Saudi Arabia decided to extend a cut in oil production of one million barrels a day lasting until August this year. Aside from Saudi Arabia, Russia followed suit, whose deputy prime minister Alexander Novak said Moscow would cut supplies by 500,000 barrels in August, which could amount to 1.5 percent of global supplies, according to a report by the New York Times. The Saudi Press Agency, meanwhile, reported that “This additional voluntary cut comes to reinforce the precautionary efforts” previously made, according to the state-run Saudi Press Agency. Price freeze Meanwhile, the Department of Energy said a State of Calamity was raised in the Province of Cavite, Ilocos Norte, and in the Municipality of Sanchez Mira in Cagayan due to the damages brought by typhoon “Egay.” “Thus, a price freeze for household Liquefied Petroleum Gas in cylinders (11Kg and below) and kerosene products is now in effect and will remain valid for 15 days upon the declaration of the state of calamity,” the DoE advisory read. The price freeze period started on 27 July until 10 August 2023. The post Diesel, kerosene prices up by over P3 next week appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

P7.2-M smuggled cigarettes seized
ZAMBOANGA CITY — The Zamboanga City Police Office reported on Sunday that its operatives arrested six individuals and seized some P7.2 million worth of smuggled cigarettes in an anti-smuggling operation here. Zamboanga City Police director Col. Alexander Lorenzo identified the suspects as Sukrimar Jose, Kiram Sali, Masaron Sahiron, Ayyub Abbas, Jun Alpa and P.J. Milagrosa, who were arrested around 11:15 p.m. Saturday near the island village of Manalipa. The police, Bureau of Customs agents and soldiers were conducting seaborne patrol when they chanced upon and intercepted a motorboat marked “FB Harayana” with six people aboard. Lorenzo said the team launched the seaborne patrol after receiving information that a motorboat loaded with smuggled cigarettes was set to pass near Manalipa Island coming from Jolo, Sulu en route to Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur. He said when inspected, the motorboat was found to be loaded with boxes of assorted cigarettes and no one among the crew was able to present documents of the cargo they were transporting. Lorenzo said seized from FB Harayana were 203 master cases and 66 reams of assorted smuggled cigarettes worth P7.2 million. The arrested suspects and confiscated smuggled cigarettes including the motorboat were placed under the custody of the 2nd Zamboanga City Mobile Force Company and will be turned over to the BoC for proper disposition. Blur is back at Wembley
Blur, one of the top icons of the Britpop era, performed the first of their two nights at Wembley Stadium to a massive wave of nostalgia. It was perhaps the perfect way to punctuate that Blur is coming out with a new album, The Ballad of Darren, on 21 July 2023. Their last one was Beetlebum in 1997. Blur frontman Damon Albarn never really stopped making music, and in the more than two decades since Blur had been "on hiatus", Albarn had made music with other collaborators or just went on solo projects that were experimental forays into other genres such as gospel and opera. Gorillaz is his most well-known outside of Blur, where perhaps tiring of the excesses of his Britpop era, he chose to present his music without showing his face, presenting animation instead. Recently Albarn was quoted as saying, "Yoga is better than heroin", swearing that Yoga had done more for his anxiety than heroin ever did. He is grateful, he says, for getting out of that era in his life pretty early. In 2014, he had been clean for a decade he said. Guitarist Graham Coxon, bassist Alex James and drummer Dave Rowntree make up the rest of Blur. The post Blur is back at Wembley appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Yoga is better than heroin, says Blur’s Damon Albarn
British band Blur are back with a new album and reunion tour -- a chance to "time-travel" for band leader Damon Albarn, even if he admits the years are taking their toll. "The Ballad of Darren", only their second album in 20 years, came as a surprise to everyone -- members of Blur included. "I didn't tell anyone I was writing it," Albarn told AFP during a visit to Paris, saying it happened while touring with his other band, Gorillaz, in the United States last year. "I came back in January and said: 'Come to the studio, I've got something to play you.'" He presented the band with 20 songs and told them to pick their favourites for the album, which is out on July 21. They are a typically strong set of tunes, but mostly the softer Blur of "Tender" than the perky pop of "Girls and Boys" or grungey rock of "Song 2". "I'm a profoundly sadder person in my 50s," the singer offered as explanation, laughing as he said it. "It's OK -- I'm leaning into my sadness. It's not that far from happiness. I'm comfortable with melancholy." Indeed, Albarn admits his cheeky-chappy persona in the 1990s was never a natural fit. He thinks about that younger self as he considers the huge upcoming dates at Wembley -- England's national stadium -- which Blur never played at their peak. "That would have terrified me beyond comprehension. Panic attacks, everything," he said. "Yoga helped me massively. Firstly it was heroin, and obviously I knocked that on the head 100 years ago. And now yoga -- if I do it pretty much every day, I'm calm. That it's not taught in every school is absurd." He also takes heart from the surreal sight of all the young people coming to Blur concerts these days. "It's like time-travelling. The audience is young again," he said. "It's weird -- you forget where you are sometimes." - 'Struggle inhumanely' - Albarn was always the most restless of the Britpop stars, exploring new sounds and styles on each album. It brought global fame, but he said it cost him mainstream acceptance back home. "It feels good at the moment of course -- people have suddenly realised I exist again -- but it's been a while since England is a place where I feel welcome," he said. Albarn's desire for the spotlight is central to infectious recent single "The Narcissist", which sees him cast back to his teenage years "with my strobe light and mirror and synthesiser in my dark bedroom, playing along with my favourite records. "That was the beginning of my narcissism," he said, though the song is also about "the fact we live in the most narcissistic age of man ever". "I don't have a phone but I understand the principle. We all carry this machine that sends pictures of ourselves, we look at them, check them, we manufacture our own narcissism." Not that he enjoys writing lyrics. At all. "I struggle hugely, almost inhumanely, with my lyrics. There's always a month when I'm trying to finish the lyrics of something... ugh, it's awful." - 'Lost our minds' - Since Blur's first hiatus back in 2003, it has been France that has been more welcoming of Albarn's experimental projects, including a full opera he is planning at the Lido in Paris next year. "Last time I tried something like that in England, it was at the National Theatre and I ended up being bullied into doing a Christmas show for 'commercial concerns'," he said, spitting the last words. There are also happy memories from Blur's first visits to Paris: nights at the legendary Bains Douches club ("a fairly explicit place," Albarn deadpans), and the Refuge des Fondus in Montmartre, famous for serving its wine in baby bottles. "Imagine being a 21-year-old English lad and being given red wine in baby bottles and melted cheese. We lost our minds!" er/bp/fg © Agence France-Presse The post Yoga is better than heroin, says Blur’s Damon Albarn appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Pride screenings showcase a rainbow of stories
Cinema is one of the most engaging artforms and creative expressions through which the LGBTQ+ community documents their lived experiences, conveys their desires and struggles, celebrates their identities and advocates for reforms and deeper understanding. Thus, film screenings are popular activities during LGBTQ+ Pride Month. This year, several institutions, streaming service companies and film groups are mounting screenings, giving these works more opportunities to reach more audiences. Here is a rundown: FDCP’s Pelikulaya LGBTQIA+ Film Festival The Film Development Council of the Philippines brings back the Pelikulaya LGBTQIA+ Film Festival this year with the theme “Mga Kuwentong Mapagpalaya” (Liberating Stories), and the aim is training the spotlight “on underrepresented members of the LGBTQIA+ community to promote a better understanding of inclusivity, diversity and equality.” According to Tirso Cruz III, FDCP chairman and chief executive officer, Pelikulaya “aims to raise awareness of LGBTQIA+ issues. We believe that by using the power of film, we can do our part in showcasing films that celebrate LGBTQIA+ stories. Hoping to create understanding of the lives, perspectives and advocacies shown in each film.” “With that, the FDCP sends our love and gratitude to you all for being with us, and we hope you’ll have a memorable experience in all of our Cinematheque Centres across the Philippines,” he added. To be held from 23 to 30 June, Pelikulaya will screen titles at the Cinematheque Centres in Manila, Davao, Iloilo, Nabunturan and Bacolod, and several theaters in Metro Manila including Cinema ‘76 and UP Film Institute’s Cine Adarna/Videotheque. Some of the titles will also be available for streaming on JuanFlix (www.juanflix.com.ph) starting 30 June with a subscription fee. A special screening of a digitally restored and remastered version of Wong Kar Wai’s Happy Together will kick off the festival on 23 June at the Shangri-La Plaza Mall in Mandaluyong City. Aside from Happy Together, films that will be screened at the Cinematheque Centres are Girl (directed by Lukas Dhont); Portrait of a Lady on Fire (directed by Celine Sciamma); Women Do Cry (directed by Vesela Kazako and Mina Mileva); Billie and Emma (directed by Samantha Lee); Mamu, and a Mother Too (directed by Rod Singh); Metamorphosis (directed by J.E. ‘Final Beatles record’ out this year aided by AI: McCartney
A "final Beatles record", created with the help of artificial intelligence, will be released later this year, Paul McCartney told the BBC in an interview broadcast on Tuesday. "It was a demo that John (Lennon) had, and that we worked on, and we just finished it up," said McCartney, who turns 81 next week. The Beatles -- Lennon, McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr -- split in 1970, with each going on to have solo careers, but they never reunited. Lennon was shot dead in New York in 1980 aged 40 while Harrison died of lung cancer in 2001, aged 58. McCartney did not name the song that has been recorded but according to the BBC it is likely to be a 1978 Lennon composition called "Now And Then". The track -- one of several on a cassette that Lennon had recorded for McCartney a year before his death -- was given to him by Lennon's widow Yoko Ono in 1994. Two of the songs, "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love", were cleaned up by the producer Jeff Lynne, and released in 1995 and 1996. An attempt was made to do the same with "Now And Then" but the project was abandoned because of background noise on the demo. McCartney, who has previously talked about wanting to finish the song, said AI had given him a new chance to do so. 'Now and Then' Working with Peter Jackson, the film director behind the 2021 documentary series "The Beatles: Get Back", AI was used to separate Lennon's voice and a piano. "They tell the machine, 'That's the voice. This is a guitar. Lose the guitar'," he explained. "So when we came to make what will be the last Beatles' record, it was a demo that John had (and) we were able to take John's voice and get it pure through this AI. "Then we can mix the record, as you would normally do. So it gives you some sort of leeway." McCartney performed a two-hour set at last year's Glastonbury festival in England, playing Beatles' classics to the 100,000-strong crowd. The set included a virtual duet with Lennon of the song "I've Got a Feeling", from the Beatles' last album "Let It Be". Last month, Sting warned that "defending our human capital against AI" would be a major battle for musicians in the coming years. The use of AI in music is the subject of debate in the industry, with some denouncing copyright abuses and others praising its prowess. McCartney said the use of the technology was "kind of scary but exciting because it's the future", adding: "We'll just have to see where that leads." Major US highway collapses after vehicle fire
A fire caused an overpass on one of America's busiest highways to collapse early Sunday in Philadelphia, authorities said, as reports attributed the cause to a truck that burst into flames under the bridge. The collapse took out four traffic lanes along an elevated section of heavily traveled Interstate 95, though no injuries were immediately reported. "Companies arrived on location and they found... heavy fire from a vehicle -- we don't know what type of vehicle it was," Battalion Chief Derek Bowmer of the Philadelphia Fire Department told a news conference. Bowmer added the situation was considered a hazmat incident, but could not confirm reports that the burning vehicle was an oil tanker. Local media reported that Philadelphia police, as well as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), were looking for the driver of the vehicle associated with the fire, whose whereabouts are unknown. An ATF spokesman told AFP that its Philadelphia field division "is supporting the investigation" and referred additional inquiries to the fire department. The fire department declined to comment. The north-south highway -- one of the busiest in the United States, connecting major cities along the East Coast from Maine to Florida -- remains closed in both directions in the Philadelphia area, officials said. Rebuilding the section of destroyed highway could take weeks, authorities said, a nightmare scenario for commuters as well as for road travelers at the start of the summer holiday season. "Avoid (the) area. Plan and seek alternative travel routes," the Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management said in a tweet. US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg said on Twitter he is offering "any assistance that USDOT can provide to help with recovery and reconstruction." Television images showed flames and billowing smoke coming from the crumbled section of I-95 in the northeastern city's Tacony neighborhood, with parts of the elevated roadway having fallen onto the lanes below. City authorities issued a series of alerts on Twitter about a tanker truck fire on the highway, which local media reported went up in flames underneath the bridge, apparently causing the collapse. A city spokeswoman told AFP that a "large fire under I-95" caused the highway to collapse, but did not attribute it to any vehicle. She said the fire has been declared "under control." Local media reported the fire started around 6:20 a.m. (0220 GMT) when Sunday traffic is typically light. "I will always be grateful to our first responders for the dangerous, life-saving work they do to keep residents and visitors safe," Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said on Twitter. The southbound lanes of the highway, while still standing, are "compromised," Bowmer said. "They got a lot of heat and heavy fire." "I-95 will be impacted for a long time, for a long time," city Managing Director Tumar Alexander told a news conference, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. Residents told city media outlets that they heard several explosions, which a fire department captain told the local NBC station were coming from underground, caused by runoff from the truck. George Soros passes reins to son Alexander
American investor George Soros is passing control of his multi-billion dollar foundation to his son Alexander, the 92 and 37-year-old duo said in an interview published Sunday. The Hungarian-born father told the Wall Street Journal that his son, the second youngest of five children, had "earned it." Reviled by conservatives, and often the target of anti-Semitic conspiracies, George Soros used his wealth amassed as a financier in the 1970s and 80s to create the Open Society Foundations (OSF), which support a broad arrange of causes and NGOs worldwide, ranging from good governance and democracy-building programs to liberal public policy initiatives. He has also been one of the biggest Democratic Party donors in the United States. Alexander, who goes by Alex, told the Wall Street Journal he is "more political" than his father, and that one of his top aims would be to push back against a possible second term by former president Donald Trump. "As much as I would love to get money out of politics, as long as the other side is doing it, we will have to do it, too," he said. Under his direction, the younger Soros said the OSF will continue down a similar path his father charted, pushing free speech, criminal justice reform, minority and refugee rights, and backing liberal politicians. But he also wants to embrace voting rights, abortion, and gender equity initiatives. The board of OSF had quietly elected Alex Soros as its chairman in December, the Wall Street Journal reported, adding that he is also the president of his father's "super PAC" -- a type of organization in the United States that can spend unlimited amounts of money on politics. An OSF spokesperson confirmed to AFP on Sunday that "Alex is Chair of the Open Society Foundations," without any further details on the timing of the change. The US newspaper also said he is the sole family member on the investment committee for Soros Fund Management, the firm that oversees family and foundation money. Some $125 million has been set aside for the super PAC over the coming years, while most of the $25 billion in the Soros Management Fund will be directed toward the OSF, the Wall Street Journal reported. More focused on domestic politics than the elder Soros, Alex is already focused on helping Democrats increase their appeal with Latino voters and improve Black voter turnout. "Our side has to be better about being more patriotic and inclusive," the 37-year-old said. "Just because someone votes Trump doesn't mean they’re lost or racist."
