Lauryn Hill, Red Hot Chili Peppers draw fans to rainy Central Park aid fest
Lauryn Hill, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Jungkook drew tens of thousands of fans to Central Park despite torrential rains, as part of a marathon concert urging global development aid. Majestic rap icon Lauryn Hill graced the stage as her seminal album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" turns 25, performing her smash single "Doo Wop (That Thing)" and reuniting The Fugees during the Global Citizen festival in New York. The legendary hip-hop trio performed tracks including "Killing Me Softly" and "Ready Or Not." "Africa needs to control their own natural resources. Haiti needs to control their own natural resources. The world, we need to stop famine," said member Wyclef Jean to cheers, as fans waved their lit phones. The message was in line with the aims of the day, which marries musical performance with calls to increase funding against global ills including poverty and climate change. The Red Hot Chili Peppers closed out the night with a set throwing back to their classics including "Can't Stop," "Scar Tissue," "Dani California," "Snow (Hey Oh)" and "Californication." And Jungkook had the poncho-clad crowd screaming and swaying along as he serenaded them with hits including "Still With You." Wearing acid-wash jeans and a brown shirt, the megastar told fans it was necessary to "make an impact together to make sure everyone, everywhere has access to their basic rights like food and education." He wasn't billed as a headliner but Jungkook was a major draw of the night: many drenched concertgoers streamed out of the park just after his set ended, even though the evening at that point was scheduled to continue for another three hours. Earlier Anitta brought her impressive twerks and dance party of a show to the stage, performing hits including her recent "Funk Rave." Brazil's biggest pop star called attention to the importance of protecting the Amazon rainforest, reminding fans it's "the lungs of our planet." Just prior to kicking off her booty-shaking set, she said that governments must do more to "protect the people there, the indigenous people, the communities there... whose only reality is the Amazon." Rappers including Busta Rhymes and Common put on a tribute to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, one of many the city has hosted in recent months. Fight against hunger Taking place since 2012 as world leaders gather in New York for the UN General Assembly, Global Citizen distributes free tickets to supporters who pledge to take action such as sending letters to their governments in support of development aid. Pledges came from leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron, who announced via video message a $150 million commitment to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). "We have to fight together against poverty, climate change, and for biodiversity," Macron said. "This is why we want to take our part as well." The Rome-headquartered IFAD is an arm of the United Nations aimed at addressing poverty and hunger in rural areas of developing countries. Global Citizen welcomed Macron's commitment in a statement, adding that "much more needs to be done to provide crucial support to millions of smallholder farmers around the world, who produce 70 percent of food in low and middle-income countries." The institution urged governments to double their climate adaptation funding and make sure IFAD reaches its funding target of $2 billion by the end of 2023. Along with Macron, the organization said Norway had pledged $90 million to IFAD. Filipinos should not forget the heroes, heroines who fought for freedom—PBBM
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has called on Filipinos to celebrate National Heroes Day with renewed pride and determination as he urged the nation to remember the sacrifices and contributions of its heroes. In his message on Monday, Marcos Jr. said Filipinos should not forget the "many heroes and heroines" who fought for the country's freedom and sovereignty. "From the defiance of our ancestors against the first invading forces to the diligence that our soldiers and statesmen held to see the last of them off, our unsung champions prove that heroism is not limited to the Herculean; it also includes the honest, earnest, and compassionate living that we do every day," Marcos Jr. said. The president also stressed that each Filipino can be a hero for their families and communities. "Hence, on this year's National Heroes Day, I enjoin every Filipino across the globe to celebrate with a renewed understanding and sense of pride for the fortitude that is naturally abundant in our hearts as a people," Marcos Jr. said. "As we recognize our forebears whose uncelebrated legacies our society is built on, let us also realize our power to become heroes for our families and communities. May this consciousness then ignite us to be dedicated to creating a new Philippines that is strong, prosperous, resilient, and secure for present and future generations," he added. National Heroes Day is a public holiday in the Philippines that commemorates the sacrifices and contributions of the country's heroes. It is celebrated on 28 August, the anniversary of the execution of José Rizal, a national hero executed by the Spanish colonial government for his advocacy for Philippine independence. Bring public health services closer
“Health is the greatest of human blessings,” according to Hippocrates, father of Modern Medicine. That is why we continue to make significant strides in improving our health system. The latest of which is the signing into law of the Regional Specialty Centers Act. As the principal sponsor and one of the authors of this measure, I am grateful to President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., for approving and prioritizing this legislation which will help bring specialized medical care closer to Filipinos in various regions, and hopefully to the most vulnerable groups in grassroots communities. As we aim to make public health more accessible, we must continue such efforts to ensure all Filipinos get the healthcare they deserve. In line with this, the Malasakit Centers we initiated in 2018 have already provided financial medical assistance to more than seven million patients so far. There are 158 Malasakit centers established all over the country through the Malasakit Centers Act of 2019, which I principally authored and sponsored in the Senate. I have also continuously pushed for the establishment of Super Health Centers, which are medium versions of a polyclinic and improved versions of the rural health unit, to make healthcare more accessible to Filipinos even in remote areas. These centers, funded with the help of my fellow legislators and primarily implemented by the Department of Health, shall provide primary health care services in communities that also include consultation, diagnosis, and early detection of diseases. As chair of the Senate Health Committee, I must emphasize the need to bring public health services closer to the people who need them the most. The enactment of the Regional Specialty Centers Act, along with the continuing operations of Malasakit Centers and the establishment of more Super Health Centers nationwide will hopefully bridge this gap and further promote the health and well-being of Filipinos no matter where they are in the country. As a legislator and public servant, I will continue to help improve public service delivery at the grassroots to the best of my capacity so that no Filipino is neglected when it comes to availing government services they need. That is why aside from the health initiatives mentioned above, I also continue to visit communities to deliver assistance, listen to their concerns, and provide solutions to their daily struggles. We were in Laguna on August 25 to inspect the Siniloan Sports Complex which was funded through our efforts as part of our goal as chairperson of the Senate Committee on Sports to promote grassroots sports development and divert our youth from harmful vices like illegal drugs. We then inspected the Isolation Facility of the Infirmary Hospital which we supported during the Duterte administration. We also led the distribution of aid to 500 impoverished residents of Siniloan together with Vice Governor Karen Agapay, Mayor Patrick Go, Vice Mayor Carla Valderrama, and other local officials. Last weekend, I also joined fellow officials and basketball enthusiasts alike in supporting Gilas Pilipinas during the 2023 FIBA World Cup. I commend everyone who took part in ensuring the successful hosting of the FIBA World Cup here in the Philippines. We were invited as a guest speaker on 24 August at the Gender and Development Activity organized by the Provincial Council of Occidental Mindoro. We support these kinds of discussions that aim to promote equal and gender-sensitive leadership. On 23 August, I received the prestigious Apostle Arsenio Ferriol Award of Excellence for Public Service and Governance. I want to express my sincere gratitude to the Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ (4th Watch) for this very prestigious recognition. With or without an award, I will continue my mission to serve fellow Filipinos, knowing very well that service to the people is service to God. Aside from the awarding ceremony, I also joined them yesterday for their 50th Golden Church Anniversary celebration in New Clark City, Tarlac. I also visited Navotas City on 22 August, together with Mayor John Rey Tiangco and Vice Mayor Tito Sanchez to help 1,000 senior citizens, PWDs, and indigents. We also provided additional support to 1,328 recovering fire victims who were given aid from the National Housing Authority to buy housing materials through their Emergency Housing Assistance Program that we initiated before and continue to support its implementation now. We were also instrumental in the construction of nine public school buildings in Navotas City, some of which we were able to inspect during our visit. My office also continues to assist Filipinos affected by calamities. Among those assisted were typhoon victims in various towns in Cagayan — 500 in Gonzaga; 500 residents in Aparri; 500 in Allacapan; 500 in Pamplona; 500 in Ballesteros; and 500 more in Caoayan, Ilocos Sur. More support was also provided for 35 indigents from different towns of Cotabato Province plus 110 sectoral members in Libungan town; three fire victims of Brgy. Peñaplata in Samal Island; 1,000 residents of Sibalom and almost 250 in Tobias Fornier in Antique; 1,000 beneficiaries in Polomolok, South Cotabato; 66 residents of Malolos Bulacan; 31 residents of General Tinio and 140 more in Gapan, Nueva Ecija. We also extended livelihood support to 14 indigents in Cauayan, Negros Occidental; three farmers in San Lorenzo, Guimaras; and 52 residents of Brgy. Tisa, Cebu City who were previously victims of a fire incident. They were also provided aid through DTI’s Pangkabuhayan sa Pagbangon at Ginhawa (PPG) program, which I pushed for before and continue to support now to boost the livelihood of those affected by various crises. Furthermore, I am also thankful to the President for signing the following into law: Republic Act No. 11961, which I co-authored, amending the National Cultural Heritage Act of 2009, and mandates the creation of a Philippine Registry of Heritage; RA 11958, which I co-authored, that amends RA 6948 to rationalize the disability pension provided to military veterans; and the One Town, One Product Philippines Program, which I authored and co-sponsored, to support the growth of the country’s micro, small, and medium enterprises. While we have accomplished a lot in the past few days in helping those in need and pushing for policies that would uplift the lives of fellow Filipinos, our work must not stop as long as there are more of our kababayans who rely on us for support. As public servants, let us continue to bring the government and its services closer to the people while working together so that no one is left behind toward recovery and progress. Hawaii fire death toll hits 55, expected to rise
A terrifying wildfire that left a historic Hawaiian town in charred ruins has killed at least 55 people, authorities said Thursday, making it one of the deadliest disasters in the US state's history. Brushfires on the west coast of Hawaii's Maui island -- fueled by high winds from a nearby hurricane -- broke out Tuesday and rapidly engulfed the seaside town of Lahaina. The flames moved so quickly that many were caught off-guard, trapped in the streets or jumping into the ocean in a desperate bid to escape. "It really looks like somebody came along and just bombed the whole town. It's completely devastated," said Canadian Brandon Wilson, who had traveled to Hawaii with his wife to celebrate their 25th anniversary, but was at the airport trying to get them a flight out. "It was really hard to see," he said, teary-eyed. "You feel so bad for people. They lost their homes, their lives, their livelihoods." The fires follow other extreme weather events in North America this summer, with record-breaking wildfires still burning across Canada and a major heat wave baking the US southwest. Europe and parts of Asia have also endured soaring temperatures, with major fires and floods wreaking havoc. "What we've seen today has been catastrophic... likely the largest natural disaster in Hawaii state history," Governor Josh Green said. "In 1960 we had 61 fatalities when a large wave came through Big Island," he said earlier in the day, referring to a tragedy that struck a year after Hawaii became the 50th US state. "This time, it's very likely that our death totals will significantly exceed that." Maui County officials said just after 9:00 pm Thursday (0700 GMT Friday) that fatalities stood at 55, and firefighters were still battling the blaze in the town that served as the Hawaiian kingdom's capital in the early 19th century. Pictures taken by an AFP photographer who flew over Lahaina showed it had been reduced to blackened, smoking ruins. The burned skeletons of trees still stand, rising above the ashes of the buildings to which they once offered shelter. Green said 80 percent of the town was gone. "Buildings that we've all enjoyed and celebrated together for decades, for generations, are completely destroyed," he said. Thousands have been left homeless and Green said a massive operation was swinging into action to find accommodation. "We are going to need to house thousands of people," he told a press conference. "That will mean reaching out to all of our hotels and those in the community to ask people to rent extra rooms at their property." President Joe Biden on Thursday declared the fires a "major disaster" and unblocked federal aid for relief efforts, with rebuilding expected to take years. 'Bodies in the water' US Coast Guard commander Aja Kirksey told CNN around 100 people were believed to have jumped into the water in a desperate effort to flee the fast-moving flames as they tore through Lahaina. Kirksey said helicopter pilots struggled to see because of dense smoke, but that a Coast Guard vessel had been able to rescue more than 50 people from the water. "It was a really rapidly developing scene and pretty harrowing for the victims that had to jump into the water," she added. For resident Kekoa Lansford, the horror was far from over. "We still get dead bodies in the water floating and on the seawall," Lansford told CBS. "We have been pulling people out... We're trying to save people's lives, and I feel like we are not getting the help we need." Green said around 1,700 buildings were believed to have been affected by the blaze. "With lives lost and properties decimated, we are grieving with each other during this inconsolable time," Maui Mayor Richard Bissen said. "In the days ahead, we will be stronger as a... community," he added, "as we rebuild with resilience and aloha." Evacuations Thousands of people have already been evacuated from Maui, with 1,400 people waiting at the main airport in Kahului overnight, hoping to get out. Maui County has asked visitors to leave "as soon as possible," and organized buses to move evacuees from shelters to the airport. The island hosts around a third of all the visitors who holiday in the state, and their dollars are vital for the local economy. At the airport in Kahului, Lorraina Peterson said she had been stuck for days without food or power, and was now looking at a lengthy wait for a flight. "I don't know if we'll be able to get a hotel room, or we'll have to sleep here on the floor," she said. With a hurricane passing to the south of Hawaii, high winds fueled flames that consumed dry vegetation. Thomas Smith, a professor with the London School of Economics, said that while wildfires are not uncommon in Hawaii, the blazes this year "are burning a greater area than usual, and the fire behavior is extreme, with fast spread rates and large flames." As global temperatures rise over time, heat waves are projected to become more frequent, with increased dryness due to changing rainfall patterns creating ideal conditions for bush or forest fires. DoT unveils new tourism slogan: ‘Love the Philippines’
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has affirmed his commitment to advancing the tourism industry in the Philippines as the sector serves as a major driver of economic growth and job creation in the country. The Chief Executive said this in a speech at the Department of Tourism's 50th anniversary celebration on Tuesday as the department unveiled the country’s new tourism slogan called “Love the Philippines." In his speech, he remained committed to making the Philippines a "tourism powerhouse in Asia” as his administration aims to promote the country's natural beauty and rich culture to the rest of the world. "This prioritization goes deeper than merely stimulating economic activities and generating job opportunities," Marcos said. "It springs from the genuine love that I and all of us have for the Filipinos." The DOT's new campaign slogan is part of the agency's National Tourism Development Plan for 2023-2028, which aims to make the Philippines a tourism powerhouse in Asia. The plan includes a number of initiatives to promote the country's tourism products and services, including regional tourism, infrastructure development and sustainability. Marcos also called on the entire Filipino nation to be tourism ambassadors for the Philippines. "Let us take pride and celebrate the love we have of our country and our people," he said. "For it is the same love that gave meaning to the establishment of the DOT and the same love that will propel our tourism industry moving forward into the future." The DOT was established in 1973 by then-President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. The department is responsible for promoting the Philippines as a tourist destination and for developing the country's tourism industry. According to the 2022 Philippine Tourism Satellite Accounts for 2022, the Tourism Direct Gross Value Added share of the sector to the Philippine economy, as measured by the Gross Domestic Product, was estimated at 6.2 percent and amounted to P1.38 trillion in 2022. Further, the country is seeing a boost in tourism-related enterprise employment, with 5.35 million estimated tourism employment last year. In terms of arrivals, the DOT’s data show that the country has recorded 2,641,993 visitors from 1 January to 26 June 2023, and is close to breaching the 2.65 million arrivals it recorded for 2022. Bong Go leads relief op in Tagum City, Davao del Norte
A day before his birthday, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go personally spearheaded a relief operation for more than a thousand disadvantaged Filipinos in Tagum City, Davao del Norte on Tuesday, June 13. Recognizing the significant impact of various crises on poor communities, Go, together with Congressman Pantaleon “Bebot” Alvarez and Governor Edwin Jubahib, made it a priority to provide relief and support to affected individuals and communities to uplift the lives of the poor. “Mawalang galang na po sa inyo kasi lagi kong naririnig, ‘salamat Senador Bong Go, salamat (dating) pangulong (Rodrigo) Duterte’. Sa totoo lang, wag kayong magpasalamat sa amin, kami ang dapat na magpasalamat sa inyo dahil binigyan n'yo kami ng pagkakataon na makapagserbisyo sa inyong lahat,” Go expressed in his speech. “Hindi ko sasayangin ang oras na ibinigay n'yo sa akin. Ako (ay) magtatrabaho para sa Pilipino. Sanay akong magtrabaho dahil yan ang nakasanayan ko noon pa man for the past 24 years,” he added. Held at the Davao del Norte Training Center, Go and his team distributed grocery packs, masks, vitamins and shirts to 1,500 struggling residents. Some beneficiaries also received mobile phones, shoes, watches, caps, and balls for basketball and volleyball. A team from the Department of Social Welfare and Development was also in attendance and extended financial assistance. Simultaneously, Go also provided more support to the community in partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment through its Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program which held an orientation for another 721 individuals in the same venue. The said beneficiaries received similar additional assistance from Go’s office. The senator took the opportunity to commend DOLE for its proactive approach in addressing the challenges faced by disadvantaged and displaced workers. The TUPAD program, aims to provide emergency employment and livelihood opportunities to those who have lost their jobs or sources of income due to crisis situations. Recognizing the importance of accessible and affordable healthcare services, Senator Go, Chair of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, also promoted the services of the Malasakit Centers as a one-stop shop for medical assistance programs. In his remarks, Go encouraged the beneficiaries to take advantage of the Malasakit Center at Davao Regional Medical Center in the city. The Malasakit Centers program, initiated by Go in 2018, aims to streamline the process of availing medical assistance by bringing together various government agencies under one roof. Go also mentioned that a Super Health Center is set to be established in the city, as identified by the Department of Health. Additionally, Super Health Centers will be constructed in the Island Garden City of Samal, Carmen, Talaingod, and two more in Panabo City. Super Health Centers offer database management, out-patient, birthing, isolation, diagnostic (laboratory: x-ray, ultrasound), pharmacy, and ambulatory surgical unit. Other available services in Super Health Centers are eye, ear, nose, and throat (EENT) service; oncology centers; physical therapy and rehabilitation center; and telemedicine, where remote diagnosis and treatment of patients will be done. Through the collective efforts of fellow lawmakers, sufficient funds had been allocated for 307 Super Health Centers in 2022 and 322 in 2023. The DOH, as the lead implementing agency, identifies the strategic areas where they will be constructed. To help contribute to the city’s progress and improved connectivity, Go, who also serves as Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, likewise supported the construction of roads in several barangays. On the same day, Go attended the First Year Davao del Norte Insurgency-Free Anniversary at the Davao del Norte gymnasium. He also graced the groundbreaking of a Super Health Center and led another distribution activity for more indigents in Carmen. ### The post Bong Go leads relief op in Tagum City, Davao del Norte appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Phl, Czech Republic to bolster defense, trade, investment ties
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said the Philippines and the Czech Republic look forward to deepening their cooperation on a wide range of issues such as defense, trade, and investment, university-to-university linkages as well as judicial and labor cooperation. In a press statement on Monday following his bilateral meeting with Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, President Marcos announced the successful conclusion of their bilateral meeting in Malacañang, where they exchanged views on regional and international issues of common concern. The President said the meeting marks an important milestone in the diplomatic relations between the Czech Republic and the Philippines, made even more significant as the two countries celebrate the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations this year. “I express our commitment to strengthening the bilateral relationship between our two countries. We recognize the importance of building on the existing areas of cooperation and exploring new opportunities for collaboration,” the chief executive said. The President also emphasized the Philippines’ strategic location in Southeast Asia and its potential as a gateway to the region. “We shared positive developments in the Philippine economy, including our high GDP growth rate and strong economic outlook, in context of a difficult and volatile world economic situation," the President said. There was also an interesting exchange of views regarding regional and international issues, including the West Philippine Sea and Cross Strait Relations, war in Ukraine, among others, the President said, noting that they both underscored their countries’ shared commitment to democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Czech Prime Minister Fiala arrived in Manila Sunday night for a two-day official visit to the Philippines. An official dinner, to be hosted by the President in honor of the visiting Czech leader, will cap Monday’s activities at the Palace.
