Nabulaga
The longest-running noontime show in the country, Eat Bulaga, recently underwent a transformation that sparked an uproar, and consequently, a mutiny by its main talents — the triumvirate of Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto and Joey de Leon. Eat Bulaga is a national staple when it comes to TV entertainment, and its durability is without a doubt, an amazing feat! Imagine being on air for 44 years, which practically is 81 percent of my lifetime! So I grew up with Eat Bulaga, even though I am not a fan, especially with the TVJ trio. But there is no escaping this show, especially before the digital age descended upon us, and social media became the new platform for entertainment. In those years in the 80s up to the early 2000s, Eat Bulaga spawned segment after segment that became so popular because it catered to our inanity and whims of shallow, hysterical theatrics, and it was successful perhaps because we needed it as our catharsis in our everyday misery. Eat Bulaga became our national pastime also because we were made to feel good about ourselves in large part due to instant gratification of cash and incentives, and the chance to shine on National TV with our looks and talents. It was an avenue of promise and opportunity, not to mention, a therapy for our overworked and stressed souls. It was, for all intent and purpose, a part of our daily lives meant to provide merriment while we suspend our mundane existence. So what happened? Why did TVJ stage a breakaway? It was said that the management wanted to refresh the show, and make it more attuned with the times, but still with TVJ as an integral part of the program. But then, TVJ is that typical dinosaur who believes they are most dominant and therefore resistant to change. The trio does not want change, maybe because they believe that TVJ made Eat Bulaga. But did they? Or is it the other way around, and is more accurate to say that Eat Bulaga MADE TVJ? Because as I saw history right before my very eyes, I know personally how the show managed to achieve endurance not because of TVJ, but because of creative segments like Little Miss Philippines, Mr. Pogi, Bulagaan, Pinoy Henyo, Laban o Bawi, All for Juan and Aldub that managed to capture our need for thrill, delight, and attention. Also, the show thrived, not because of TVJ but because of the rise of new talents OTHER than them, such as Aiza Seguerra, Coney Reyes-Mumar, Toni Rose Gayda, Christine Jacob, Allan K, Sex Bomb Dancers, JoWaPao and Alden and Maine. Sure, TVJ may have had a hand in the creative development of the segments as well as in honing the talents, and they really loomed larger than life in Eat Bulaga. That is a fact. But it is also factual to say that Eat Bulaga was the one who gambled on them, and they are now who they are because Eat Bulaga was their daily platform and center stage. And so we have this chicken-or-egg conundrum of who really made who. And I dare Reiterate this — TVJ may have created Eat Bulaga from their imagination, but it was Eat Bulaga that really made TVJ who they are now. And Eat Bulaga will survive, and continue to enliven us, even without TVJ. Mark my word. The post Nabulaga appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
TNT bags title
Mikey Williams saved his best for last and carried TNT to a historic first-ever championship in the Philippine Basketball Association Governors' Cup as the Tropang Giga finished the best-of-seven championship Friday night with a 97-93 win over Barangay Ginebra. Williams put on a shooting clinic, hitting nine treys and finishing the game with 38 points as the Tropang Giga completed their date with the destiny of finally winning the season-ending tournament in front of 13,558 fans at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. While TNT captured its first Governors' Cup, head coach Jojo Lastimosa and Calvin Oftana also cherished the moment of winning the first championships of their respective careers. Winning a title right in his first conference as a mentor, Lastimosa joined the elite cast of coaches to win just in their maiden conference. His feat enabled him to join Narciso Bernardo (1984 First All-Filipino Conference, Crispa), Chot Reyes (1993 All-Filipino, Coney Island), Eric Altamirano (1997 All-Filipino, Purefoods), Ryan Gregorio (2002 Governors' Cup, Purefoods) and Joel Banal (2003 All-Filipino, TNT) as debuting tacticians who struck paydirt right away. Oftana, on the other hand, won his first championship as a PBA player. Plucked from NLEX in the mid-season in a trade involving top overall rookie pick Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser and veteran forward Troy Rosario, Oftana immediately became an impact player for the Tropang Giga. In Game 6, the Tropang Giga battled foul trouble in the early goings with Poy Erram and Calvin Oftana each nursing three fouls in the first half as Barangay Ginebra played with much sense of urgency and dictated the tempo, leading by as many as 11 points, 44-33, on Scottie Thompson's two free throws with 4:17 left before the half time break. But the first half was practically a one-man show for Mikey Williams, who torched the nets for 26 points and hit seven-of-12 shots from beyond the arc to keep the Tropang Giga in the thick of the fight. Williams' 26 points in the first half were the most by a local player in the first half since Game 2 of the best-of-seven championship series between TNT and Rain or Shine in the 2015 Commissioner's Cup when Jayson Castro pumped in 27 points. Castro, a seven-time PBA champion, is still playing for the Tropang Giga, but his role has diminished as the franchise's sixth man. A scoring champion two years ago, Williams, a Finals Most Valuable Player when TNT last won the title in the 2021 Philippine Cup, also had 26 points in the second half of TNT's 98-106 loss to Magnolia in Game 3 of their 2021 Philippine Cup best-of-seven championship series. Willaims had taken over in the first half as import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson acted more like a facilitator, giving the local players good looks to the basket. Hollis-Jefferson, the newly-minted Best Import, scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds, but could only make three of his 10 shots from the field in the first 24 minutes of play. Fauci says Trump’s talk of Covid-19 ‘cure’ causing confusion
US President Donald Trump has been talking up an experimental Covid-19 treatment he received as “a cure,” but one of his top government scientists said referring to it as such may cause “confusion.” Anthony Fauci, the longtime director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Disease, gave an interview to CBS News on Friday where he also referred to the coronavirus outbreak at the White House that infected dozens of people as a “super spreader event.” Asked about Trump’s effusive praise for Regeneron’s antibody treatment, Fauci said that talking about a “cure” could be misleading because it hasn’t yet been proven, and the drugs that are currently available have only been shown to have modest to moderate results. “We don’t have any indication — I think you really have to depend on what you mean by a cure, because that’s the word that leads to a lot of confusion,” he said. He then walked through some of the medicines that are currently recommended or have been temporarily approved against the disease. These include the antiviral remdesivir which has been shown to diminish time to recovery among hospitalized patients, and the steroid dexamethasone, which reduces mortality rates in patients who need supplemental oxygen. Regeneron’s treatment belongs to a class of drug called monoclonal antibodies. Fauci said that while these had been “showing promise in clinical trials,” the research is still ongoing and no final determination has been made. Fauci was also asked about the low level of mask use at the White House until recently, and what lessons could be learned. “I think the — the data speaks for themselves,” the scientist said of mask-wearing. “We had a super-spreader event in the White House and it was in a situation where people were crowded together and were not wearing masks. So the data speak for themselves.” More than 30 people are thought to have been infected at a White House ceremony held September 26 for the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. The president’s doctor Sean Conley has said Trump may return to public engagements as early as Saturday, raising fears that he may still have high levels of the virus in his body and therefore still be contagious. Fauci said he had faith that the president’s medical team wouldn’t allow him to do that. “I can tell you, they are going to be testing him to determine the trajectory and whether he gets to the point where he’s not infected,” he said. “I can guarantee you that they will be testing him before they let him go out.”.....»»
