COA hits AMLC for splurging on pricey phones

The Commission on Audit (COA) has called out the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) for buying 16 "high-end" iPhone 7 units for its financial investigators in 2017, which meant it could only buy fewer phones with its budget.   In its annual audit report, COA said AMLC did not comply with its annual procurement plan that provided for the purchase of 24 cell phones at P25,000 each, or a total budget of P600,000.   AMLC instead bought 16 iPhone 7 units at P37,388.88 each, 49.55 percent higher than the approved unit cost. TOKYO, Japan --- A strong earthquake knocked over walls and set off scattered fires around the city of Osaka in western Japan on Monday morning, and at least two people were feared dead. Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency said two people were found with no vital signs and 41 others had been injured.   Moscow --- The suspect in a taxi crash near Red Square that injured two Mexican soccer fans and six other pedestrians as Russia hosts the World Cup told interrogators he fell asleep at the wheel, Moscow city police said Sunday. The police released a video of an interrogation session with a man the Moscow force identified as the taxi driver. In the recording, he says he briefly dozed off and accidentally hit the gas.
