Igacos waterfall cemented?
A waterfall in Sitio Auring, Barangay Cawag, Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos), near Hagimit, has become the center of controversy after a viral Facebook post claimed that it had been cemented over. The post included pictures showing the pristine, blue waterfall in its natural state, and then the subsequent image revealing a group of men using an excavator to cement the waterfalls. An anonymous concerned citizen revealed that access to the waterfall had been restricted for cementing purposes, reportedly due to excessive waste left behind by tourists. Despite previous closures and efforts to communicate regulations, visitors continued to disregard the rules and leave their waste behind. While some netizens expressed dismay over the alleged cementing, comments on the post suggested that it might serve a purpose related to slope protection. A concerned citizen called out irresponsible tourists for their failure to manage their garbage and stressed the importance of collective efforts to maintain cleanliness in tourist spots for future generations. The Samal Tourism Office declined to comment, stating that an assessment is currently being conducted by the local government of Samal......»»
Care in the neighborhood
Aboitiz Land led a coastal cleanup at Seafront Residences earlier this month to underscore its unwavering commitment to marine-life conservation. The initiative aimed to not only clean the coastline but also to gather valuable information for future efforts. This data will contribute to a more targeted and sustainable approach in the conservation of marine life. Capacity development programs and information, education, and communication activities were also implemented to promote environmental responsibility among participants. The event brought together a diverse group, including members from partnering organizations, Seafront Residences homeowners, and key institutions like the Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Coast Guard auxiliary, local barangay, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office, municipal administrator and the Department of Education. Nestled at the core of Seafront Residences lies the Pawikan Nature Reserve, designated as a critical nesting site for endangered pawikans. Upholding the cleanliness of these coastal regions is integral to ensuring the preservation of the pawikans’ natural habitat. Ongoing initiatives, including regular coastal cleanups, are set to continue in the coming years, ensuring the sustained protection of both the pawikans and their coastal habitats. The steadfast dedication of Aboitiz Land at Seafront Residences not only enhances the coastal biodiversity but also sets an inspiring example for coastal communities across the Philippines. The Department of Social Welfare and Development on Thursday said it welcomed the recommendations of the recent Commission on Audit report to improve the condition of the warehouse operated by the DSWD Field Office-National Capital Region. DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian has already ordered FO-NCR Director Michael Joseph Lorico to physically inspect the warehouse and check the condition of the stockpile of relief goods, according DSWD Assistant Secretary Romel Lopez, who is also the agency’s spokesperson. “The words ‘state of disrepair’ and ‘lack of cleanliness and organization’ are not acceptable to the DSWD’s manual of housing relief items in any of our warehouses or facilities,” Lopez said. “Rest assured that the DSWD management is already looking into this concern to fast-track the apply the necessary changes to improve the stockpiling, cleanliness, and condition of the NCR warehouse,” he added. The Department, Lopez said, will also take into consideration the regular pest control and repairs to improve the condition of the storage facility, which is operated and managed by FO-NCR. The National Resource Operations Center, the main disaster hub of the DSWD located in Pasay City, can temporarily hold some of the family food packs from the regional warehouse until the situation in the said facility is sorted out, according to the DSWD Disaster Response and Management Group. Lopez assured the public that the DSWD has sufficient relief goods, both food and non-food items, to respond to families affected by typhoon “Jenny.” “At present, the Department has more than P1.8 billion stockpile and standby funds ready for relief distribution to areas that will be affected by typhoon “Jenny” so our kababayans need not worry because the government is prepared,” the DSWD spokesperson said. Bayani Fernando, a true public servant (1)
On 22 September 2023, in a freak and unfortunate accident, the country lost a man who spent much of his life in dedicated public service. Bayani Fernando, a popular, beloved three-term mayor, a two-term Congressman of Marikina, a few months Secretary of Public Works, and an eight-year Chairman of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, passed away at age 77, creating a vacuum in the kind of leadership exercised by, unfortunately, a few public servants. In a toxic atmosphere of politics, his entry into public service was a refreshing gust of wind. Putting aside his business interests (he founded the BF Group of Companies, engaged in construction, steel, manufacturing, and real estate), he plunged head-on to an unfamiliar terrain. He lost in his first try and emerged victorious in his second. Thereafter, he carved a name for himself as a strict, disciplinarian and creative Mayor of Marikina for three consecutive terms. He has become a legend in local administration. He transformed Marikina from a 4th class municipality to a model city of cleanliness and orderliness, receiving citation after citation in different fields of endeavor. As Mayor, he launched a crusade against all forms of transgressions of law. He stopped illegal vending and destroyed the confiscated food and merchandise to show he meant business. He instilled discipline among the employees. He made the dirty and odorous public toilets in City Hall look and smell like hotel restrooms. He re-settled the informal settlers, not by transferring them to other cities but by providing them with lands and shelter inside the city. Bayan as he is called by his pretty and equally dedicated public servant wife, Marides Carlos- Fernando, dredged the Marikina River of filth and garbage, developed the banks into flood control outlets, and converted both sides of the river as a park. He commenced massive repairs and cementing of roads. He built an efficient drainage system and created sidewalks all over Marikina. He established health centers in the barangays. He enforced the law on everyone, exempting no one. He removed illegally parked vehicles and enforced traffic rules strictly. He made the public market clean and stalls orderly and sectionalized. Garbage was regularly collected. Public service became efficient and prompt. Employees were courteous and sported smiles as they rendered service to Marikeños. Under his watch, the economy of Marikina grew. His other half, a UP product, from whom he derived his inspiration to serve faithfully Marikina, continued the caring Fernando kind of governance. He brought his creative and authoritative leadership as Chairman of the Metropolitan Development Authority to Metro Manila. He brought back the sidewalks to the pedestrians, which were invaded by vendors selling their wares. He forcibly evicted squatters along the railroad tracks, esteros, and those living under the bridge. He made innovative projects that dramatically lessened the chaos that used to vex Metro Manilas. He improved on the nightmarish traffic congestion. He introduced the U-turn slots and constructed food bridges that made crossing the streets convenient and safe. He was a hands-on government worker, ensuring the projects he initiated ran smoothly, and those implementing them were on their toes. He didn’t back down from pressures and resistance coming from powerful politicians and businessmen. He didn’t leave anything to chance or rely on the people he tasked to do a particular job. He had to be there inspecting, correcting, and innovating on anything he put his mind to. Tragically, this admirable character trait brought him to his demise. Lacuna: Dispose garbage properly
The local government of Manila on Wednesday appealed to all city residents to dispose of their garbage properly, especially during the rainy season, stressing that improper waste disposal contributes to clogged waterways and flooding. Lacuna said that the personnel of the Department of Public Services are spending too much time cleaning up in areas where garbage should not be found as she reminded residents that there is an existing city ordinance regarding the “Tapat ko, Linis ko” program, which requires every household to keep their vicinity and frontage clean. The lady mayor also cited the importance of clean surroundings in order to avoid any kinds of illnesses borne by dirty areas, such as stagnant waters that become breeding grounds for rats and mosquitoes. She also underscored the importance of keeping the surroundings clean as this would invite tourists and investors, which would mean progress for the city and its inhabitants. Lacuna also reminded residents about the implementation of the waste segregation system and scheduling of the garbage collection in the city, saying its success lies with the full cooperation and support of the residents. She called on Manilans to put to heart the age-old saying that “cleanliness is next to godliness” in order to help keep their very own city clean at all times. Confession of a skeptic cat parent
I used to be skeptical about owning a cat and didn’t see the appeal. I thought cats were distant and not affectionate based on stereotypes and my limited experience. Growing up, we didn’t have cats. I rarely saw one inside our house. Pet dogs are a different story. Having had several since my world began, I believed dogs were loyal and formed deep bonds with their owners, while cats appeared aloof and uninterested in forming connections. I didn’t want a pet that would only tolerate me without showing genuine affection. Am I to be blamed for having reservations about the cleanliness and upkeep involved in owning a cat? My mother and only brother were wheezers. The idea of handling cat fur, cleaning litter boxes, and the possibility of allergies brought uncertainty about having them as pets. I initially preferred a pet that required less maintenance, or at least I thought so. My viewpoint started to shift when a colleague in the government welcomed a cat into their home. Back in 2016, I observed a new aspect of having a feline companion that hadn’t crossed my mind previously. This cat displayed affection, playfulness, and sincere love towards its owner. I witnessed how the cat offered solace and companionship, particularly during challenging moments. One day in 2017, my daughter came home from school with an orange kitten – we guessed he was five months old. He was a “puspin” (short for pusang Pinoy or Pinoy cat) with a short coat that had lost its kitten fluff. The puspin had followed her from the condo gate like a child afraid of getting lost. Driven by my curiosity, I yielded to the temptation and chose to dedicate some time to interact with my daughter’s cat we named Sam. To my astonishment, I formed a strong connection with the feline in a short period. Sam’s tender purrs, lively behavior, and instances of cozying up disarmed the skeptic in me. It also dawned on me that cats could provide companionship and a distinct form of love that, although different from dogs, held an equally significant worth. American novelist Ernest Hemingway’s “One cat just leads to another” quote is spot on. More than five years after adopting Sam, we now share the house with nine other “puspins.” In time, I uncovered the cats’ diverse personalities. It is wrong to say that all cats exhibit independence and are reserved because they, too, are sociable and yearn for human interaction. It took more than five decades for me to realize that cats can forge profound connections with their owners, thereby transforming them into loyal companions. Together with my children, the responsibilities of litter box maintenance, grooming, and maintaining a cat-friendly home became part of our daily routine. We join other cat parents and feline enthusiasts across the globe on August 8 in celebrating one of man’s most common and ancient pets. International Cat Day, created by the International Fund for Animal Welfare in 2002, is an annual occasion that commemorates cats, advocates for their well-being, and promotes responsible pet ownership. In emphasizing the importance and worth of these remarkable companions in our lives, we discovered our other roles by respecting and communicating with the cat world. Manila LGU employees ‘pillar of strength’
Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna recently recognized the efforts and unwavering support of local government employees, saying that they are the true pillars and source of strength of the city government. Lacuna also assured of a fair and just process when it comes to selection and promotion of local government employees in the city. In her first year in office, Lacuna said the policy was upheld and the significant role being played by the Local and City Promo Board was also given due recognition. “We recognize the important role of the Local and City Promo Board in recommending qualified staff to the local government. There is no need for the influence of the city head office or anyone else,” said Lacuna in her speech. “We pay attention to our fellow staff because more than anyone else, they are our companions every day of our service. They are the real strength of the city government,” she added. The Manila mayor also said that the local government is keen on the improvement of the welfare of the employees. “We should our fellow public servants feel cared for by valuing the order and cleanliness of each office. We strongly believe that by being orderly and clean, our mind also becomes smooth, our dealings with all and we are effective in fulfilling our duty,” Lacuna said. Tree planting drives intensified
The local government of Iloilo’s City Environment and Natural Resources Office and partner organizations continue to collaborate on a tree planting drive to promote native trees to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Through the Iloilo City Tree Park Network Project in Molo, La Paz and Jaro, planting of native trees has been given a boost in various locations. A total of 20 saplings of native species were planted at the Beach Forest along the coast of Barangay Boulevard, Molo, and in City Hall in partnership with the Zoological Society of Londonand Globe. City ENRO Engr. Neil Ravena said clean-ups are also being conducted every week. “Tree park personnel, or ‘forest guards’ have been placed to ensure cleanliness and maintenance of the area, as there have been reports of improper waste disposal,” Ravena said. He added that at least 200 hectares of arboretum, a botanical garden devoted to trees, have been planted with different native trees in the Mangrove Eco-Park at Hinactacan, La Paz. The tree park area in Lanit, Jaro is currently undergoing filling works by the Department of Public Works and Highways to elevate the site to make it suitable for planting trees and to prevent flooding. The local government has also partnered with the United Architects of the Philippines Bahandi Chapter, which has creatively designed the tree park. This will feature also the Ati Livelihood Center where the indigenous people can present their own products and conduct discussions. The native species of saplings burgeoning in the said areas were carefully selected with the active participation of native tree enthusiasts to create a much greener environment that will preserve ecological balance, enhance biodiversity, and combat the climate crisis. The future of Home Design
Designing complex products and solutions such as trains, home appliances and sanitaryware for different markets has helped award-winning designer Antoine Besseyre des Horts develop a strong ability to create culturally relevant solutions that empower people to address their daily needs and aspirations. [caption id="attachment_151750" align="aligncenter" width="525"] PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF LIXIL | Award-winning French designer Antoine Besseyre des Horts.[/caption] “It (design) is indeed about providing emotional and practical benefits at the same time. However, delivering good design requires a holistic approach of the creative process,” Des Horts told Daily Tribune. When working for an organization or brand, designing a new product or solution implies to deliver on a specific purpose and promise — to address the unmet needs and aspirations of identified target audiences, to limit the impact of the development, the manufacturing and marketing of the product or solution onto our planet yet ensure feasibility and viability. Knowing how to balance all these different parameters and requirements is key to drive value for the organization or brand and society. As leader of Lixil Global Design Asia, Des Horts heads an international and multidisciplinary team with studios in Singapore and Shanghai providing creative direction to translate LIXIL brands’ — Grohe, American Standard and Inax — strategies into culturally relevant consumer experiences through product, packaging, environment and communication. Prior to Lixil, he worked at Grohe in Dusseldorf, Germany, where he successfully led design projects of fittings, showers, accessories, ceramics, furniture and electronic devices for the European, American and Asian markets. Prior to Grohe, Des Horts has worked with prestigious agencies: Alstom Design & Styling in Paris as a transportation designer, designing trains and tramways; London-based branding agency Landor as a brand-experience designer; Electrolux Group in Italy as an industrial designer of home appliances. [caption id="attachment_151745" align="aligncenter" width="587"] PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF american standard | CITY vanity cabinet[/caption] “When it comes to design, I often use this quote ‘People ignore design that ignores people’ by Frank Chimero. Designers are genuinely driven by a desire to create solutions to positively impact people’s lives. Therefore, design is all about relevance and can be used as a driving force for meaningful and purposeful innovation. This is why companies, as we are living in a time of exponential change, are more and more leveraging design in order to stay relevant to their target audiences in the different parts of the world,” Des Horts said. In market and consumer-centric research, it is noted that the bathroom and kitchen industry in the region is recovering, driven not only by economic recovery but also consumer needs which are shifting along three macro trends: Health and wellbeing, sustainability and rapid urbanization. “Consumers are spending more time at home. More attention to physical and mental health and wellbeing. They increasingly view the bathroom as a spa or wellness area,” des Horts said. [caption id="attachment_151747" align="aligncenter" width="525"] PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF GROHE | GROHE spa[/caption] Another obvious change, he adds, is higher awareness and appreciation for good hygiene especially for public places with high human traffic such as shopping malls, airports and hospitals. However, there is also an increased consumer concern for cleanliness and hygiene at home. “This is increasing demand for technologies such as touchless faucets, antimicrobial ceramics and smart toilets with automatic cleaning, disinfection functions to safeguard the health of their loved ones,” he said. When it comes to sustainability, consumers are leaning toward brands and products that help the planet without compromising the customer experience. [caption id="attachment_151749" align="aligncenter" width="852"] Grohe’s water surface installation at Pinacoteca di Brera, a public gallery in Milan.[/caption] “Finally, we observe that rapid urbanization is placing pressure on transforming the one function room into a multi-functional living space. This creates an urgent need to reimagine and plan innovative solutions for better homes,” he adds. These three macro trends are influencing consumers to seek out fittings and fixtures that act as smart, intuitive helpers that simplify everyday routines — as the borders of the bathroom and bedroom, as well as kitchen and living room, are dissolving. [caption id="attachment_151748" align="aligncenter" width="525"] PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF GROHE | GROHE Allure Bathroom.[/caption] For example, bathrooms are also becoming a place for rejuvenation and relaxation, where one can escape to and recuperate from the daily stress of work. Bathrooms can include functions and products that emulate a spa-like experience for improved physical and mental sense of well-being. LIXIL has American Standard’s EasySET Exposed shower system and Grohe’s SPA AquaSymphony. Each has different types of sprays that offer physiological benefits, advanced temperature controls to provide comfort and safety, as well as intuitive outlet controls for daily convenience and fuss-free experiences. Des Horts said, “We also note a growing demand for color customization. We are responding to this with a variety of high-quality colors fittings across our American Standard, Grohe and Grohe SPA brands offering means to people to create tailored bathroom spaces that match their personal tastes and aspirations.” “Our aim will continue to be about developing and leveraging technologies which are meaningful by providing practical and emotional benefits that truly enhance people’s daily lives. The great thing about consumers in most Asian countries such as Philippines is that they adopt new technologies and adapt to them very fast. We are continuously striving at making it worthwhile to visit our branded spaces. We want to go beyond the traditional showrooms by offering multi-sensorial experiences that enhance the way people interact with our purposefully designed products, meaningful technologies and customization options to suit their lifestyles and living spaces,” concluded Des Horts. PBBM lauds healthcare workers for sacrifices during height of pandemic
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday thanked the healthcare workers for the sacrifices they made during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Chief Executive commended their efforts as he witnessed the launch of the bivalent vaccination at the Philippine Heart Center in Quezon City. In his speech, Marcos acknowledged the tireless efforts of the healthcare workers and credited them with saving millions of Filipino lives. “I can speak of this intimately as I was a victim and that’s why I know the condition that patients felt and what a relief and what a godsend your care was to all of those who had suffered from Covid-19. So, once again, thank you, thank you, thank you very much for all that you did,” Marcos said. Addressing the nation on the path to recovery from the global pandemic, Marcos said that the “prayers have been answered” as he noted the significant decrease in cases and less severe symptoms since the introduction of vaccines. “The symptoms are no longer as severe as before, and the threat posed by the delta and omicron variants has diminished,” Marcos said. However, he urged the Filipinos not to be complacent against the virus and highlighted the importance of protecting vulnerable populations, particularly those with severe comorbidities and senior citizens. Recognizing the need to re-examine preventive measures, Marcos Jr. emphasized the significance of vaccination in safeguarding the population. “We must not let our guard down. We have to continue implementing programs like the bivalent vaccination campaign to protect our vulnerable sectors, especially the elderly," Marcos said. Marcos Jr. also expressed confidence that with science-based strategies and a whole-of-society approach, the risks associated with new variants could be managed effectively. He acknowledged the pivotal role played by vaccines in combating the virus and stressed the government's commitment to eradicating severe diseases caused by Covid-19. During the event, President Marcos Jr. expressed gratitude to the governments of Lithuania for their generous donation of the country's first batch of bivalent vaccines. He also extended his appreciation to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) for their ongoing assistance in the Philippines. The President called upon every Filipino to contribute to the fight against Covid-19 by staying updated on their vaccinations. He emphasized that getting vaccinated was not only for personal well-being but also for the protection of families and the entire population. "Government-assisted vaccines, including bivalent doses, are free for every Filipino. Let us continue fortifying our efforts to protect the public against health risks," President Marcos Jr. stated, commending the Department of Health (DOH) and local government officials for their dedication to the vaccination campaign. Marcos then urged the nation to remain steadfast in the fight against not only Covid-19 but all infectious diseases. He emphasized the importance of discipline, cleanliness, and cooperation in overcoming the remaining challenges posed by the pandemic. The President expressed his belief that the Filipino society would emerge stronger and more resilient in the face of adversity. As he concluded his address, President Marcos Jr. encouraged everyone to take part in the bivalent vaccination program, stating, "Let us get vaccinated to prevent illness and return to work swiftly. Together, we will build a healthier and more prosperous Philippines." The post PBBM lauds healthcare workers for sacrifices during height of pandemic appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
‘Bayanihan sa Barangay’ launched
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and the local government of Makati City kicked off on Tuesday the “Bayanihan sa Barangay” project at Barangay Bangkal as part of the agency’s clean-up drive aimed to help densely populated areas and bring the agency’s services closer to the public. MMDA acting chairperson Atty. Don Artes said the project aims to raise public awareness on the importance of proper waste disposal. Personnel from MMDA offices such as Flood Control and Sewerage Management Office, Health, Public Safety and Environmental Protection Office, Sidewalk Clearing Operations Group and Traffic Engineering Center conducted various activities and services such as drainage de-clogging, sidewalk clearing operations, painting of pedestrian lanes and installation of road signage. The agency also conducted orientation sessions on anti-smoking, anti-littering, solid waste management, disaster preparedness and trash-to-cash programs. Artes also said the agency have already submitted the names of individuals who will be part of the Tupad Program of the Department of Labor and Employment, and who will be deployed to local government units to assist with the declogging operations. “The agency plans to conduct the ‘Bayanihan sa Barangay’ project on all Metro Manila LGUs,” Artes said. The MMDA chief also called for the public’s help in maintaining the cleanliness in their surroundings. Meanwhile, the MMDA TEC has recently recorded the highest vehicle volume count plying EDSA numbering to 425,890 vehicles from the previous high of 405,822 in 2019. Even with the increase in volume of vehicles, Artes said the travel speed along EDSA has improved from 21.67 kph last January 2020 to 24.98 kph recorded last 22 May of this year. Artes also said the number of motorcycle-related accidents has decreased tremendously along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City after the implementation of the motorcycle lane. The implementation of Exclusive Motorcycle Lane along Commonwealth Avenue started last March 2023 to help reduce the number of fatal road crashes involving motorcycles and to improve traffic flow. ‘Cleantramuros’ seeks improved Walled City
The Intramuros Administration on Sunday kicked off a clean-up drive dubbed ‘Cleantramuros’ which seeks to maintain cleanliness inside the historical Walled City as 15 volunteers signed up on its clean-up activity on Sunday morning. The program — which started last month — has already 400 volunteers from six barangays participating in its first two-hour clean-up activity. The Intramuros Administration said that volunteers will be given a Certificate of Volunteerism and free entrance to Fort Santiago, a centuries-old fortress inside the walled city. “Walk-ins are welcome. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring their own broom, dustpan, gloves, and garbage bags as donations for the project,” the Administration said in a Google form for the April clean-up. “Cleantramuros” will still be in progress on 23rd and 30th of April, the last two Sundays of the month. In other developments, Monsignor Rolly de la Cruz was formally instated as the new rector of the Minor Basilica and Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception or the Manila Cathedral inside Intramuros. De la Cruz, formerly the Parish Priest of San Fernando de Dilao Parish in Paco, Manila, was appointed by Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula in October last year. He was then taking a sabbatical leave in Auckland, New Zealand when the appointment was announced. He will be assuming the position previously held by Fr. Reginald Malicdem, who was the Cathedral’s rector from 2015 to 2022. He has already led two masses since his installation, including a Friday night Mass on the visit of the Reliquary of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus at the Cathedral, as well as his first Sunday Mass as church rector. In his homily on Friday, Archbishop Advincula thanked Dela Cruz for accepting the appointment, and reminded him of his duty as assigned to him with the grace of the Lord. “Msgr. Rolly, you are assigned as Rector of the Manila Cathedral, not because you are better than the other priests, not because of your accomplishments, and not because of your capabilities and skills. You are here because it is the Lord who calls you here,” Advincula said. “As you serve them, may you listen to them for they will also help you see the Lord in your ministry, in your priesthood, and in your life. Let this cathedral, with the number of times that this was destroyed and yet rose again, be a constant reminder that ‘it is the Lord,’ he added. Dela Cruz, in his message, also gave assurance that his leadership as Manila Cathedral’s new rector will still ensure ‘solemn peace’ in the church, with a culture that will remain intact. “The Manila Cathedral will continue to be a solemn place of worship where you can come to celebrate our Faith, where you can be nourished by the Word and the Eucharist. This sacred space will still provide you with a quiet place where you will find solace and rest, consolation and grace,” said Dela Cruz.
