Pilot who tried to shut flying plane’s engine on magic mushrooms
The off-duty American pilot who tried to shut down the engines of a plane mid-flight on Sunday had taken magic mushrooms and had not slept for 40 hours, court documents showed Tuesday. Magic mushrooms contain hallucinogenic chemical called psilocybin according to Medical News Today. After being cuffed with wrist restraints and seated at the rear of the aircraft, Joseph Emerson also tried to open an emergency exit “because I thought I was dreaming and I just want to wake up,” he told police, according to a criminal complaint. Emerson told the investigating officer it was his first time taking mushrooms. The 44-year-old was arrested on Sunday evening after the Alaska Airlines flight he disrupted made an emergency landing in Portland, Oregon. Emerson had boarded the flight — which was operated by Horizon Air — between Everett, Washington and San Francisco, sitting in the jump seat of the cockpit, in line with airline policy for non-working staff. A short way into the journey, after chatting with the pilots “Emerson attempted to grab and pull two red fire handles that would have activated the plane’s emergency fire suppression system and cut off fuel to its engines,” the United States Department of Justice said. “After a brief physical struggle with the pilots, Emerson exited the cockpit.” Alaska Airlines said Monday that pilots had reacted quickly to reverse the handles, and the aircraft with 80 passengers had landed safely. The US Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon said Emerson faces a federal charge of interfering with flight crew members and attendants. He has also been charged in Oregon with 83 counts of attempted murder, 83 counts of reckless endangerment and one count of endangering an aircraft. US media reported that he pleaded not guilty to these charges during a brief court appearance in Portland on Tuesday. Hamas’ direct order: Attack civilians
Hamas terrorists who raided southern Israel were given explicit orders to pillage, kill, and take hostages, including seizing the elderly, women, and children, an interrogation of captured gunmen revealed. A joint announcement by the Israel Securities Authority and the Israel Police said Hamas terrorists from the Nukhba Unit who took an active part in the massacre on 7 October were questioned. The terrorists made statements indicating the intent of the terror leaders and the marauders: • “Whoever kidnaps a hostage and brings them to Gaza gets a stipend of $10,000 and an apartment;” • “The instructions were to kidnap elderly women and children;” • “Cleanse the houses, and kidnap as many prisoners as possible;” • “Her dog came out, I shot him;” • “We took a 15-year-old girl, took a selfie with her;” • “Her body was lying on the floor, I shot her. The commander yelled at me, said I was wasting bullets on a corpse,” and • “We finished, then we burned 2 houses.” In the recordings of the interrogation, the main points that came up repeatedly were that the senior commanders of the military wing of Hamas, of company commander rank and above, stayed behind, protecting themselves in safe houses, while they sent their people to fight, die or be arrested in Israel. In the ISA investigations, terrorists provided detailed information on the morning of the raid and the massacre, including information used to attack targets in the Gaza Strip. In the joint statement, the security forces of Israel ensured the settling of all accounts with terrorists who participated in “the massacre on 7/10.” 120 OFWs going home Meanwhile, 120 Filipinos working in Israel have requested the government’s help to return to the Philippines. Department of Migrant Workers officer-in-charge Hans Leo Cacdac said the agency is processing the repatriation requests. “When I say process, we are calling them twice or thrice to make sure that they really want to go home. Second, we are ensuring that they’ve finished their contracts and that they’re really scheduled to go home,” Cacdac said. “As for the others, we make sure that their separation from their employers was okay and that there was no job abandonment,” he added. Criminal case filed vs Pura Luka Vega
A criminal charge has been filed against Pura Luka Vega by the Kapisanan ng Social Media Broadcasters ng Pilipinas Inc. for their controversial “Ama Namin” performance posted on social media in July. Leo Alarte of the KSMBPI submitted their organization’s complaints to the Pasay City Prosecutor’s Office on Monday. The case filed by the group was in connection with violation of Article 133 of the Philippine Constitution, which talks about “offending religious feelings,” as well as Section 6 of Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code in relation to the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012. The group said the complaints were in relation to Pura’s controversial “Ama Namin” performance, which the group described as “pambabastos sa Panginoon.” The KSMBPI said they were hurt by Pura Luka Vega’s Ama Namin performance, especially since the Philippines is among the Christian countries of the world. To recall, Pura was arrested and was held under the custody of the Manila Police District Station 3 in Quiapo, Manila, after the devotees of the Black Nazarene, Hijos del Nazareno, filed a complaint. Pura was released after posting bail after three days of being incarcerated. He expressed surprise to be served the arrest warrant as they did not receive the subpoena summoning them to court. They said the document was delivered to another address. Pura also reiterated that their “Ama Namin” performance was not meant to be disrespectful to people of faith. War in Israel a new front in US election campaign
The surprise Hamas assault on Israel has opened up a new front in the US election campaign as Republicans accuse President Joe Biden of being soft in his defense of Israel and in his handling of Iran. "I think this is a great opportunity for our candidates to contrast where Republicans have stood with Israel -- time and time again –- and Joe Biden has been weak," Ronna McDaniel, chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, said Saturday on Fox News. Americans will choose a new president and control of Congress in November 2024, with Biden, 80, seeking another term in a race that looks likely to pit him against former president Donald Trump as the Republican candidate. Trump used the stunning Hamas attack by land, sea, and air at dawn Saturday to target Biden. “The Israeli attack was made because we are perceived as weak and ineffective and with a very weak leader,” he said. Other Republican presidential hopefuls, like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former Vice President Mike Pence, also dismissed Biden as weak. US stands with Israel A stern-faced Biden gave a short speech from the White House on Saturday to stress firm US support for Israel. "Today, the people of Israel are under attack, orchestrated by a terrorist organization, Hamas," Biden said. "In this moment of tragedy, I want to say to them and to the world and to terrorists everywhere that the United States stands with Israel. We will not ever fail to have their back." Republicans zeroed in on a recent decision by the Biden administration to release $6 billion in Iranian oil revenue frozen in South Korea in exchange for the release of five Americans who were being held prisoner in Iran. Tehran is the main sponsor of Hamas, which the United States and other countries classify as a terrorist group. Senator Rick Scott, for instance, said that in unfreezing that money -- it was transferred to a bank account in Qatar for use only for humanitarian purposes -- the United States had in effect financed the Hamas attack, which won praise from Iran. That charge angered the White House, which called it a "shameful lie" and insisted that the money was tightly controlled in how it could be used and none of it had been spent. A senior administration official speaking to reporters on Saturday accused Republicans of spreading disinformation. Help from congress The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stressed it was too early to say whether Iran was directly involved in Hamas' large-scale attack, but that there was "no doubt Hamas is funded, equipped and armed by Iran and others." Aside from the 2024 election, the Republican attacks pose political problems for Biden. The United States already provides billions of dollars a year for Israel but Biden will need Congress if he wants to send more now that Israel has declared itself at war with Hamas. That means Biden has to work with the Republicans, who are blocking passage of a yearly budget. Making matters worse, the House of Representatives is in chaos and limbo now because of the ouster of its speaker, Kevin McCarthy, last week in a revolt by a handful of far right Republicans. The White House would also like the Senate to approve Jack Lew soon to be the new American ambassador to Israel. His nomination was announced more than a month ago. This will require goodwill from the Republican minority in that chamber. The post War in Israel a new front in US election campaign appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Philandering Quezon City cop nabbed
Members of the anti-scalawag unit of the Philippine National Police have arrested an active Quezon City cop facing a charge of concubinage in Makati City last 30 September. In a belated report yesterday, Brig. Gen. Warren de Leon, chief of the PNP Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group, said the suspect, Master Sergeant Ledesma Mollenido, 36, assigned at the Quezon City Police District was nabbed at a room at Airobez Hotel in Makati located along 5487 Boyle Street. Mollenido was arested by virtue of a warrant issued by Cavite judge Antonio Oyao Del Val last 29 September for concubinage. A P30,000 bail was set for the policeman’s temporary liberty. De Leon said the case was filed by Mollenido’s wife after discovering that her husband was cohabiting with another woman. He said Mollenido was arrested based on a tip-off of the hotel’s supervisor. Mollenido is currently detained at the IMEG custodial facility in Camp Crame “for documentation prior to the return of an arrest warrant to the issuing court,” De Leon said in a statement. Mexico says ex-diplomat accused of sex crimes arrested in Israel
Mexican writer and former diplomat Andres Roemer, who faces multiple accusations of sex crimes, has been arrested in Israel, Mexico's president said Monday. Roemer "will be extradited," Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said at his regular morning press conference. The allegations against Roemer, which number about 60 according to activists, began in February 2021 when the Mexican dancer Itzel Schnaas accused him of sexual assault. The 60-year-old former Mexican consul in San Francisco and goodwill ambassador to UNESCO "categorically" denied the first accusation. But he withdrew from social media in the face of mounting allegations that he had touched women inappropriately after meeting them on a work pretext. Mexico requested Roemer's extradition in June 2021. Its foreign ministry confirmed in a statement that Israeli police detained Roemer on Sunday "for extradition purposes, at the request of the Mexican Government." "Although there are no extradition treaties with the State of Israel, the arrest... was carried out based on the principle of reciprocity and international cooperation, based on the good bilateral relationship that exists in all areas between both countries," it said. US condemns latest attack on Cuban embassy
The United States on Monday condemned the latest attack on Cuba's embassy in Washington, in which a man allegedly threw two Molotov cocktails at the mission. The communist nation described the incident Sunday night as a "terrorist attack." No one was injured. "All attacks and threats against diplomatic facilities are unacceptable," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters. "We are in contact with Cuban embassy officials and, consistent with our obligations under the Vienna Convention, the department is committed to the safety and security of diplomatic facilities and the diplomats who work in them," he said. He said the State Department was coordinating with Washington police in the investigation. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez earlier wrote on social media that an individual threw two Molotov cocktails in the "terrorist attack." Ambassador Lianys Torres Rivera said the embassy had "immediately communicated with United States authorities, who were given access to the mission to take samples of the Molotov cocktails." The attack took place hours after Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel returned to Havana after attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York and other activities with Cubans in the US. In New York, Cubans had demonstrated against Diaz-Canel's presence at the UN, according to posts and videos shared on social media. "The anti-Cuban groups resort to terrorism when feeling they enjoy impunity, something that Cuba has repeatedly warned the US authorities about," said Rodriguez after Sunday's attack. It was the second attack against the Cuban mission in Washington in recent years, after a man opened fire on the building in April 2020. There were no injuries from that attack either. At the time, the Cuban foreign minister summoned the then-US charge d'affaires in Havana, Mara Tekach, to express his "energetic protest" over what he called a "terrorist aggression" against his embassy. That shooting left bullet holes in exterior walls and columns, broke a street lamp and damaged several panes of glass and moldings on the front of the building. US authorities arrested Alexander Alazo over the shooting, charging him with multiple offenses including "a violent attack on a foreign official or official premises using a deadly weapon," according to the US Justice Department. The Cuban embassy reopened as a full mission after a reconciliation bid by former US president Barack Obama. His successor, Donald Trump, backed by staunchly anti-communist Cuban Americans, reversed many of Obama's overtures. Drug suspect with 2,454 grams of shabu worth P16-M nabbed in Pasay
Agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) arrested a man with 2,454.85 grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride, valued at about P16 million, in Pasay City. The NBI identified the suspect as Raymond Darag Dulla, who, after his arrest last 14 September, was charged with illegal transport of prohibited drugs under Section 5 of Republic Act No. 9165, the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. The seized drugs were subjected to forensic examination which determined the drugs as shabu. Dulla was subjected to a drug test which found him positive for marijuana and shabu. It said that Dulla was arrested during an interdiction operation conducted by NBI National Capital Region (NBI-NCR) last 14 September along Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City. Confiscated from Dulla were tape dispensers containing a white crystalline substance suspected to be shabu. The operation stemmed from information that on 14 September 2023, Dulla would be transporting shabu concealed in tape dispensers placed inside a brown box. “Additional information revealed that Subject will be renting a taxi that will traverse the service road near Kenny Roger’s along Roxas Boulevard and Heritage Hotel in Pasay City at around 8:00 in the evening.” Agents of NBI-NCR proceeded to the area where the taxi was supposed to pass, and after spotting the taxi boarded by Dulla, the agents discretely followed it. The NBI-NCR operatives flagged down the taxi but the taxi tried to accelerate but was eventually blocked by the vehicles of the operatives before it could escape. Red-tagged individuals have only themselves to blame
These human rights groups and activists have been haranguing the government for every perceived action that threatens their democratic space or their existence as an organization. They are always at the forefront, slamming the government and its officials who do not conform to their progressive and radical views. They rev up people into a frenzy and rally them against certain policies and programs that will neutralize the revolutionary activities of the armed left and its front organizations. They organize protest marches and rallies and call on the people to reject government initiatives to eradicate the more than 50-year-old communist urgency, like the establishment of the NTF-ELCAC, which has successfully stopped the resurrection of the communist rebels. The NTF-ELCAC is an ingenious program commenced in the previous Duterte administration, institutionalizing the government’s “whole of nation” approach in confronting the ongoing communist rebellion and against groups that are front organizations of the Communist Party of the Philippines or CPP. The socio-economic program of the NTF-ELCAC at the barangay level succeeded in dismantling the communist hold on the depressed and neglected barangays. It led to hundreds of NPAs surrendering and returning to the law’s fold. These left-leaning individuals and aggregations exhibit their nationalist pretensions by embroiling themselves with national issues related to the people’s needs and sufferings, picturing themselves as victims of human rights violations committed allegedly by the government against them. They use social media to whip up support for them and use compelling political propaganda subjects like alleged summary killings, unlawful arrests, tortures, and harassment of political activists and progressive groups. Their comrades in Congress who managed to be elected have become effective political mouthpieces against the government. They are good at using the mass media, which is just too happy to accommodate them to boost their sales. Some have infiltrated the government bureaucracy and used their positions and offices to advance their political ideologies in the guise of good government. They have been successful, too, in recruiting young students of impressionable minds to embrace their causes, who end up either young NPA rebels, leading student activists, or dead resulting from government clashes with government troops. These self-proclaimed nationalists have peppered the air with accusations of extrajudicial killings against the government and have defended suspected terrorists and subversives when arrested and prosecuted. They readily proclaim their innocence. They have taken the cudgels of citizens murdered by common criminals or political warlords — but they are deathly silent when the communist armed rebels waylay, ambush, and murderously assault military men and women as well as civilians engaged in humanitarian missions during the occurrence of natural disasters. Even when they are confronted with this telling inconsistency and dared to condemn these terrorist atrocities, these leftists remain tight-lipped. They have never condemned the New People’s Army for its terroristic and undemocratic activities. Given this implied but glaring support to the enemies of the state by their deafening silence, can we reasonably accuse the government officials of classifying or describing them as supporters of the NPA or closeted members of the armed rebellion? Certainly not. They have only themselves to blame for being tagged as red supporters. Why should they be afraid, ashamed, or embarrassed to be called communists or communist supporters? The Anti-Subversion Law, where being a member of the CPP is a crime, has long been repealed. So why the fear or shame of being called a communist advocate or supporter? These democratic pretenders must unclothe themselves of their camouflage and join the parliamentary struggle. They should publicly articulate the virtues of communism against democracy and seek elective posts based on their true ideological selves. They should not use the Bill of Rights to undermine the authority of the constituted authorities, remaining as secret enemies of democracy while masquerading as its champions. It is about time they unmask themselves and be proud of their ideological beliefs. They should put an end to their pretense. They should be principled enough to present themselves as ideologues of communism — own to their loyalty to such ideology — and profess it publicly. Let the people judge who — and what they are — and not what they pretend to be. The post Red-tagged individuals have only themselves to blame appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
P680K shabu seized from 4 druggies
Four individuals were arrested in a drug-sting operation in a rented house in Barangay San Dionisio, Parañaque City Monday night. According to P/Maj. Francis Aldrich Garcia, officer in charge of the Regional Drug Enforcement Unit, his office received an information about the clandestine sale of illegal drugs in the area. He said the confidential informant told them the group is operating their illegal drug transaction in the southern Metro area. A week-long surveillance operation was conducted until a poseur buyer from the intelligence group of RDEU struck a deal with the group thus the operation. Authorities seized a digital weighing scale and two plastic sachet of suspected illegal drugs with 100 grams inside amounting to P680,000. Two of the suspects, who was not named, claimed they were just told to go to the said rented house and they have no knowledge about the illegal transactions there. But they admitted using illegal drugs or shabu but denied they were selling the same. The suspects will be charged for violating RA 9165 or Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act. Garcia, on the other hand, lamented the delay of the inventory of the seized illegal drugs due to the absence of barangay officials in Barangay San Dionisio. He said they decided to coordinate with the barangay before they proceeded with the operation but no official was on duty at that time. Garcia said the job already prospered as they already arrested the four suspects but nobody from their kagawads and even the barangay chairman was available. Under Section 21 of RA 9165 o Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2022 the presence of the media, Department of Justice, and elected official is needed for the inventory of the seized illegal drugs. But since there was no available barangay official, they decided to call a barangay kagawad in the adjacent barangay of the city. Probe on PNP abuse, rights violation sought
Senator Raffy Tulfo on Friday filed a resolution urging the Senate to probe alleged abuse, killings and human rights violations by the members of the Philippine National Police due to their “persistent failure” to follow police operational procedures. Senate Resolution 767 is urging an appropriate committee in the upper chamber to undertake an inquiry against police officers engaged in abuse of power, criminal acts and violation of human rights. Tulfo lamented that cops must enforce the law accordingly, maintain peace and order, and ensure public safety and internal security in the country. However, he lashed out about several reports indicating that police operations have failed due to their negligence in operational procedures. He cited the 12 August incident wherein Pandi police officers entered the property of Rodelio Vicente claiming they were just conducting a “manhunt” for an alias “Elmer” without any warrant of arrest or justification. The cops eventually arrested Vicente for allegedly committing direct assault and disobedience to a person in authority and was taken into custody for no valid reason. Tulfo slammed the arresting cops for not wearing their uniforms and using ski masks during the supposed manhunt operations. Vicente’s daughter was also physically assaulted by these police officers. Also, Tulfo cited the case of John Francis Ompad who was killed by Police Corporal Arnulfo Sabillo from the PNP Rodriguez, Rizal last 20 August while conducting an “Oplan Sita” — a police checkpoint. Ompad allegedly refused to show driving documents and ran away from the checkpoint, prompting Sabillo to chase the rider and shoot him. “The aforementioned two incidents happened within the same month; and just weeks after the death of Jerhode Jemboy Baltazar who was killed by PNP Police Operatives from Navotas under a claim of mistaken identity,” Tulfo wrote in his resolution. “The operation was found to have had several irregularities and non-compliance with the PNP Police Operations Procedure,” he added. Tulfo stressed that the protection of human rights remains a “fundamental principle” enshrined in the Constitution. He further pressed the need for the police officers to strictly observe their Police Operations Procedure and to ensure strict application of the internal discipline of the PNP. DNA evidence clears US man of rape charge 47 years later
A US man who served seven and a half years in prison for a rape he did not commit has been cleared nearly five decades later thanks to new DNA evidence, authorities said Tuesday. Leonard Mack, now 72, was arrested in 1975, in Greenburgh, New York state, after the rape of a teenage girl, who had been walking home from school with another girl. Police announced a search for a Black suspect in the mostly white neighborhood and shortly after picked up Mack, who is African American. After a campaign by the Innocence Project, DNA evidence not available at the time has "conclusively excluded 72-year-old Mr. Mack as the perpetrator and identified a convicted sex offender, who has now confessed to the rape," the Westchester County prosecutor's office said in a statement. "This is the longest wrongful conviction in US history known to the Innocence Project to be overturned by DNA evidence," the district attorney's office said, citing Mack's "unwavering strength fighting to clear his name for almost 50 years." According to the National Registry of Exonerations, 575 wrongly convicted people have been cleared based on new DNA tests since 1989 -- 35 of them while waiting for execution. Researchers say that Black suspects are far more likely to be the subjects of wrongful convictions than innocent white people. Although Black people account for only 13.6 percent of the total US population, more than half of the 3,300 people whose convictions were overturned between 1989 and 2022 were Black, the National Registry of Exonerations said. Reacting to his exoneration, Mack said: "I am finally free." The post DNA evidence clears US man of rape charge 47 years later appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
