Duterte: China should ‘temper’ behavior in South China Sea

President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday said China should "temper" its behavior in the South China Sea after the Chinese navy threatened a Philippine military aircraft in its latest known flight over China's man-made islands in the disputed sea. "You cannot create an island and you say that the air above the artificial island is your own. That is wrong. The right to innocent passage is guaranteed," Duterte told businessmen and diplomats in a speech in Malacaang. "I hope that China would temper its behavior. I do not want to quarrel with China," he added. The President asserted that ships would not need "any permission to sail through the open seas." "And if it's nearby a ter...Keep on reading: Duterte: China should ‘temper’ behavior in South China Sea.....»»

La Salle finishes fourth in South Korean tournament

While De La Salle University fell short of a podium finish in the 2018 Asia Pacific University Challenge, the experience they earned there will still go a long way as they commence a new era. The Green Archers fell to host Yonsei University, 80-92, last Saturday to wind up their campaign with a 2-3 record. That standing was only good for fourth-place in the invitational. Still, the Taft-based team welcomes the promising showings from the likes of scoring dynamo Aljun Melecio, hardworking forward Santi Santillan, and super rookie Encho Serrano. “Malaking tulong ‘to sa amin cause, first of all, we all know na yung team na ‘to is rebuilding so kailangang mabuo namin yung confidence namin sa isa’t-isa,” Melecio shared. He then continued, “Both on and off the court, yun yung nagawa namin.” In particular, Serrano, playing for the first time in green and white, showed several flashes of why he was once considered the top high school player in the country. “Masarap at masaya na makapaglaro na finally sa La Salle. Sobrang thankful ko rin kasi big experience para sa aking makalaro at makalaban yung mga team sa ibang bansa,” he said. A fully healthy team captain Kib Montalbo, who sat out much of the 2018 Filoil Preseason due to injury, was also a welcome sight. “Man’s greatest victory is to conquer himself. We learned a lot about mental toughness there,” he remarked. Now, La Salle will bring that experience to the looming UAAP Season 81. The Green Archers opened the tournament with back-to-back wins against Japan and Chinese Taipei before falling to UC Irvine, Russia-select, and Yonsei. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

Duterte will never allow a Chinese casino to be built in Boracay — Palace

President Rodrigo Duterte will never allow a Chinese casino to be built on Boracay even after the rehabilitation period of the resort island, Malacaang said on Monday. This is contrary to Leisure and Resorts World Corporation's (LRWC) announcement on Friday, July 27, that the plan to build a 23-hectare casino-resort complex will push through despite the island's closure to tourists. "I don't think any private entity should test the political will of the President on the issue of casinos in Boracay," Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a briefing. "The President has said no, and I would hope they would respect that as part of Executive power," he stressed. Cayetano on landing of China plane: Nothing fishy about it

Foreign Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano on Friday said a Chinese military plane was given diplomatic clearance to land at an airport in Davao City after the military authorized it, contradicting an earlier statement by military officials that it was the other way around.   "It's nothing irregular. There's nothing fishy about it. It is something that countries do," Cayetano said in an interview with CNN Philippines.   In fact, he said the Philippines had extended the same accommodation to 243 US and 33 South Korean military aircraft.   Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said he learned of the presence of the Chinese military plane belatedly.---MARLON RAMOS ...Keep on reading: Cayetano on landing of China plane: Nothing fishy about it.....»»
