Bong Go reminds public to observe proper hygiene amid typhoid surge
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go has urged Filipinos to be more vigilant and prioritize their health by observing proper hygiene in the wake of an alarming increase in typhoid cases across the country. According to the Department of Health (DOH), at least 17,531 cases of typhoid have been recorded this year. Go, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, expressed his concern for the growing number of typhoid cases and called upon the Filipino people to take immediate action to protect their health and that of their loved ones. Typhoid fever is a highly contagious bacterial infection that primarily spreads through contaminated food and water. Its symptoms, which include high fever, abdominal pain, and severe weakness, can be severe and even life-threatening if left untreated. Therefore, the recent increase in cases is a cause for significant concern, stressed Go. According to the most recent disease surveillance report from DOH, there has been a 38 percent increase in reported cases of the disease from 1 January to 30 September compared to the same period last year, with 12,693 cases. The Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) reported the highest number of cases at 2,861 followed by Northern Mindanao with 1,932 cases, and Mimaropa Region (Mindoro Occidental, Mindoro Oriental, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan) with 1,413 cases. Cases in SOCCSKSARGEN (South Cotabato, Cotabato City, North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and General Santos City) increased by 119 percent from 512 cases to 1,123. Central Luzon saw the most significant increase in cases, with a 192 percent increase from 334 cases last year to 975 cases this year. "Typhoid fever is a preventable disease, and it is disheartening to see the numbers continue to rise," Go said, adding "We cannot afford to be complacent when it comes to our health. It is our responsibility to stay informed and practice proper hygiene to prevent the spread of this disease." Go also urged the government and health agencies to intensify their efforts in raising awareness about typhoid prevention, enhancing healthcare services, and implementing strict measures to ensure food and water safety. Go then highlighted the importance of Malasakit Centers and Super Health Centers as crucial components of the country's healthcare system, saying, “As the nation battles the increasing number of typhoid cases, it is essential for Filipinos to be aware of the facilities designed to provide quick and efficient medical services and assistance.” The Malasakit Centers program, a brainchild of Go, serves as a one-stop shop for medical assistance programs. These centers bring together key government agencies to streamline the process of availing medical aid. “Ang Malasakit Center po ay one-stop shop, nasa loob na ho ng hospital ‘yung apat na ahensya ng gobyerno – ‘yung DOH, DSWD, PhilHealth, at PCSO. Tutulungan po kayo sa inyong billing,” said Go. The program was institutionalized through Republic Act No. 11463, which was principally sponsored and authored by Go. To date, there are 159 operational centers that have successfully helped more than seven million Filipinos nationwide. Moreover, the Super Health Centers offer a wide array of medical services, including consultations, and diagnostic tests, among others, ensuring that more Filipinos receive proper medical care close to their homes. “Malaking tulong po ito na ma-decongest ‘yung mga hospitals. Makakatulong rin sa early disease detection para maagapan ang sakit. Pwede na sa Super Health Centers ang primary care at pagkonsulta sa doktor,” he added. Super Health Centers offer database management, out-patient, birthing, isolation, diagnostic (laboratory: x-ray, ultrasound), pharmacy, and ambulatory surgical unit. Other available services are eye, ear, nose, and throat (EENT) service; oncology centers; physical therapy and rehabilitation centers; and telemedicine. Through the collective efforts of fellow lawmakers and local government units, sufficient funds have been allocated under the DOH for 307 Super Health Centers in 2022 and 322 in 2023. "In times like these, we must come together as a nation. Let us be vigilant, look out for one another, and ensure that proper hygiene practices are consistently followed. By working together, we can combat this outbreak and protect the health and well-being of our fellow Filipinos,“ stressed Go. Typhoon Jenny maintains strength over Phl Sea
Typhoon Jenny maintains strength as it moves north-northwestward over the Philippine Sea, the state weather bureau said Tuesday. In its latest weather bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration, said Typhoon Jenny, as it continues to enhance Southwest Monsoon or habagat, will bring significant rains over the western portions of Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, and Visayas in the next three days. PAGASA said the enhancement of the Southwest Monsoon by Jenny will bring gusty conditions for the next 3 days over the following areas not under any Wind Signal, especially in coastal and upland/mountainous areas exposed to winds including Bataan, the southern portion of Aurora, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Romblon, and most of Bicol Region. Gale Warning is hoisted in the coastal waters along the seaboards of Northern Luzon. The typhoon will also bring moderate to rough seas (1.5 to 3.5 m) over the coastal waters of northern Aurora. PAGASA advised mariners of motor bancas and similarly-sized vessels to take precautionary measures while venturing out to sea. If possible, navigating in these conditions, especially if inexperienced or operating ill-equipped vessels, shall be avoided. Typhoon Jenny is forecast to move northwestward or west-northwestward until tomorrow before turning generally westward thereafter. On the track forecast, Jenny will make landfall over the southern portion of Taiwan between late Wednesday evening, or Thursday morning, then exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility between Thursday morning and afternoon. When outside the PAR region, Jenny will continue moving westward slowly over the Taiwan Strait towards the coastal waters of southern China. PAGASA said the weakening trend continues due to the increasing dry air entrainment and vertical wind shear. “Land interaction during its passage over the rugged terrain of southern Taiwan will further weaken the tropical cyclone. Once over the Taiwan Strait, additional cool dry air from the north will entrain into JENNY, resulting in further weakening,” it added. Typhoon Jenny was last tracked over the 325 km East Northeast of Basco, Batanes as it moves North Northwestward at 10 kilometers per hour. It packs maximum sustained winds of 155 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 190 kph. Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal PAGASA said the Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 is hoisted in Batanes with winds of greater than 62 kph and up to 88 kph may be expected in at least 24 hours. TCWS No. 1 is raised over the Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, the northern and eastern portions of Isabela (Maconacon, Divilacan, Palanan, Santa Maria, San Pablo, Tumauini, Cabagan, Ilagan City, San Mariano, Santo Tomas, Dinapigue, Benito Soliven, Naguilian, Gamu, Quirino, Delfin Albano, Quezon, Mallig), Apayao, the northeastern portion of Abra (Tineg, Lacub, Malibcong), the northern portion of Kalinga (Balbalan, Pinukpuk, Rizal, City of Tabuk), and Ilocos Norte. Winds of 39-61 kph may be expected in the above-mentioned areas for at least 36 hours or intermittent rains may be expected within 36 hours. At least seven towns in Pangasinan have suspended classes due to the inclement weather brought by Jenny while monsoon rains continue to dump in the province. Classes in all levels were suspended in the towns of San Manuel, Pozorrubio, and San Jacinto, while classes from pre-school to high school were canceled in the towns of Asingan, Mangaldan, and San Fabian. Only classes from pre-school to elementary were suspended in the town of Manaoag. The post Typhoon Jenny maintains strength over Phl Sea appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Biggest franchise expo rides on growth
Franchising is expected to earn an unprecedented P30 billion by the end of the year, based on industry projections. During the Franchise Asia Philippines 2023 International Expo briefing on Monday, Philippine Franchise Association chairperson Sherill Quintana said that franchising revenues has reached P27 billion in the year to date, already surpassing the pre-pandemic 2019 revenues of P25 billion. With the growing local market, Quintana said global franchise brands should consider the Philippines as their “launching pad” in Asia. “The future is Asia, and the Philippines will be the launch pad for what the Asian economy will be able to seize for the global market,” Quintana said in a press conference in Quezon City. In the next five years, she said her group is expecting to reap 10 to 13 percent revenues for the industry over the next five years. PFA president Chris Lim said the exposition will be the biggest franchise show that the country hosted in the past 10 years. Franchise Asia Philippines 2023 International Franchise Expo will run from 27 to 29 October and the meetings of the World Franchise Council and the Asia Pacific Franchise Confederation from 24 to 30 October 2023. “More than a decade ago was the last time that a similar event was held in the Philippines, so it is really a very momentous occasion. And what a great way to really celebrate and to really show that we’re back in business, that the franchise industry in the Philippines is as vibrant as ever,” Lim added. SMX Convention Center taken up Franchise Asia Philippines 2023 overall co-chair Richard Sanz said this will be the first time for a franchise event to occupy the entire SMX Convention Center in Pasay City to showcase 1,000 local and global franchise brands from 26 countries. Further, he said 39 percent of the expo participants are new exhibitors with new concepts such as breastfeeding center, agriculture supplies, automated retail and convenience store, vape store and kickboxing gym. “This speaks of the vibrancy of the franchise sector with new players joining the market,” he said. Sanz mentioned that also 20 percent of the participants are international brands from Australia, China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Sinapore, Taiwan, Thailand and the United States. More than 50,000 exhibitors are expected to attend the expo. “This highlights the continued interest among Filipinos in franchising as an investment option,” Sanz said. ‘Western powers fighting Russia’
Russia’s foreign minister has accused Western powers of “de facto” fighting against his country through their military support for Ukraine. “You can call it anything you want, but they are fighting with us, they are straight-up fighting with us,” Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told journalists at the United Nations on Saturday. Westerners are “de facto fighting against us, using the hands and bodies of Ukrainians,” Lavrov added, pointing to the billions of dollars in Western military equipment provided to Kyiv since Russia attacked last year. Last week, United States President Joe Biden met with Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington after the two spoke at the UN General Assembly in New York. Biden announced in a press conference with Zelensky more US military aid to Ukraine, including the delivery of M1 Abrams tank this week. Lavrov also claimed that US and Britain are giving intelligence support and Western military advisors are present in Ukraine. Lavrov’s statement came on the same day Kyiv announced a missile attack on Moscow’s Black Sea Fleet headquarters in the Crimean port of Sevastopol, killing senior naval commanders. Agence France-Presse has not been able to verify the information from Kyiv. Russia has said one of its servicemen is missing after the attack. Meanwhile, a Ukrainian drone strike hit an administrative building in the center of Russia’s southern Kursk city, authorities said Sunday. A second shipment of Ukrainian wheat also reached Turkey via the Black Sea on Sunday, according to maritime traffic monitoring sites, despite Russian threats to attack boats heading to or from its neighbor and enemy. The Palau-flagged bulk carrier Aroyat — laden with 17,600 tons of wheat — left the port city of Chornomorsk on Friday bound for Egypt. Phl to UN: Uphold int’l law to keep Indo-Pacific free, open
Adherence to international law by all nations would maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific region, the Philippines said Sunday. Speaking on behalf of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York City, Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo reiterated that all countries are accountable for maintaining a rules-based global order. “Its present and future rest on the predictability and stability of international law, which safeguards the rights of all states. If multilateralism is to endure, all states must adhere to the rule of law,” Manalo said. “Guided by an independent foreign policy, the Philippines actively works with nations to promote a rules-based international order,” he added. Quoting President Marcos, Manalo stressed that the Philippines is “a friend to all and enemy to none.” The DFA chief also said that the Philippines advocates the “peaceful settlement of disputes, in accordance with international law.” “This has always been our position with respect to the disputes in the West Philippine Sea, inasmuch as we are prepared to defend our sovereignty, sovereign rights and territorial integrity,” he said. “Our Constitution renounces war as an instrument of national policy, adopts the generally accepted principles of international law as part of the law of the land and adheres to a policy of peace, equality, justice, freedom, cooperation, and amity with all nations,” he added. In his speech, the country’s top diplomat also pointed out that the 2016 Arbitral Award on the South China Sea is “now part of international law.” China claims the vast South China Sea, including the West Philippine Sea, with its historic nine-dash line claim, which the Permanent Court of Arbitration invalidated after siding with the Philippines. Seven years after the Tribunal favored the Philippines’ arbitral case against China, the ruling remains on paper as China continues to disregard it by keeping its illegal activities in the West Philippine Sea. For Manalo, all nations must adhere to international law to sustain stability in the Indo-Pacific region. "Adherence to international law contributes to keeping the Indo-Pacific, with ASEAN at the center, free and open and our region stable and peaceful. In line with this, we are guided by the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific,” he said. The post Phl to UN: Uphold int’l law to keep Indo-Pacific free, open appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Bong Go joins Asian Games send-off; renews advocacy for athletes’ welfare
Senator Christopher "Bong" Go recognized athletes, coaches, and sports officials for their contributions to Philippine sports and their crucial roles in representing the nation on the international stage, during the send-off ceremony on Monday, 18 September, at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City, for Filipino participants in the 19th Asian Games and 4th Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China. “Today, we gather here not only to celebrate the excellence of our athletes but also to bid them the best of luck as they embark on a journey to represent our great nation at the 19th Asian Games and 4th Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China," said Go. Go took the opportunity to shed light on his proposed Senate Bill No. 2116, which aims to amend Republic Act No. 10699, also known as the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act. "This bill which I authored carries the potential to bring about positive change in the lives of our athletes, particularly our para-athletes," he said. Go emphasized the need to increase the incentives for para-athletes, stating, "Sana po’y ma-increase naman rin po ang kanilang incentives na natatanggap dahil ‘yung honor po na dala nila sa ating bayan, pareho naman po ‘yong gold, silver, bronze at pinaghirapan rin po nila." The proposed measures seek to upgrade the incentives for para-athletes. This bill intends to provide equal opportunities and recognition to all athletes, thereby promoting inclusivity and diversity in sports. "The heart of this legislation is inclusivity and equality. It aims to elevate or increase the incentives for our para-athletes," he mentioned. Go, vice chairperson of the Senate Committee on Finance said he continues to advocate for additional budget for sports programs under the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC). "During the budget deliberation last year, ang ipinasa po na budget ng PSC more or less about P200 million. Ako po mismo sa Senado bilang inyong chairman po ng Committee on Sports and as vice chair ng Committee on Finance, isinulong ko talaga na madagdagan po ng P1 billion po ang pondo ng Philippine Sports Commission," he said. He revealed that during the budget deliberations last year, he sponsored and successfully secured financial support for athletes participating in international competitions such as the 2023 Southeast Asian Games, which took place in Cambodia, and the forthcoming Asian Games in China. He also disclosed the allocation of P50 million through the PSC for the Asian Games, along with P30 million specifically for Asian para-games. Go also highlighted the importance of collaboration between the government and the private sector in achieving sports excellence. "’Pag nagsama ang gobyerno at pribadong sektor, walang imposible.” Meanwhile, in his speech, the senator also touched on the state of sports facilities in the country, emphasizing the need for comfortable training grounds for athletes. "Ako, sa abot ng aking makakaya ay tutulong po ako sa ating mga sports program ng ating bansa," he assured. In line with his focus on grassroots sports development, Go also spoke about the National Academy of Sports (NAS), a fully operational institution located in New Clark City in Tarlac. "Ngayon po pwede na pong mag-aral at the same time mag-training, training at the same time mag-aral diyan po sa National Academy of Sports," he said. This initiative aims to ensure that athletes do not have to sacrifice their education for their sports careers. Former president Rodrigo Duterte signed RA 11470 in June 2020, which provides for the establishment of the NAS System and its main campus. Go was an author and co-sponsor of the measure. Go is also prioritizing the institutionalization of the Philippine National Games (PNG) as a platform to scout and recruit athletes for the national pool. He filed SBN 423, or the proposed PNG Act, which seeks to create a nationwide platform for athletes, particularly the youth, to display their abilities. During the ambush interview, Go also emphasized the importance of grassroots programs in encouraging youth to engage in sports and lead a healthy lifestyle. "Grassroots program, it's one way na ma-e-engganyo natin ang ating mga kabataan to get into sports, stay away from drugs, and to keep us healthy and fit," he said. He further elaborated on the connection between sports and health, saying, "Malaking bagay na fit tayo. Ang importante rin sa akin bilang chairman ng Senate Committee on Health, dalawa po 'yan. Importante sa akin ang sports at health. Magka-connect ang dalawang ito dahil para sa akin, kapag fit ka, healthy ka. Pangalagaan po natin ang kalusugan ng bawat isa. Katumbas ng kalusugan ay buhay ng bawat Pilipino." Toward the end of his speech, Go expressed his gratitude to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for his unwavering support for Filipino athletes. "Salamat po mga athletes. And of course, gusto ko rin pong pasalamatan ang suporta po sa atin ng ating mahal na Pangulong Bongbong Marcos sa suporta niya sa SEA Games, sa Asian Games, at sa lahat pa po ng future competition," he said. Go likewise extended his thanks to PSC Chairman Dickie Bachmann, Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham Tolentino, and the Philippine Paralympic Committee President Michael Barredo for their ongoing support and contribution to the athletic community. He likewise thanked the athletes, para-athletes, and coaches for their dedication and sacrifices in training. "Athletes, para-athletes, coaches salamat po sa inyong lahat, sa inyong sakripisyo sa pagte-training. Alam kong ito na po ‘yung panahon na inaantay natin," Go said. As the athletes prepare for their journey to Hangzhou, China, Go assured them of his full support. "To our athletes, I know that we stand with you every step of the way. We believe in your potential, and we are confident that you will make our country proud on the international stage," he concluded. The upcoming Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8. The event was originally scheduled for 2022 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tolentino: Our athletes are prepared
Team Philippines will be prepared and ready to win when it marches to the 19th Asian Games that will open on Saturday at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Stadium in Hangzhou, China. No less than Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino declared their readiness, saying that they will deploy the best and most prepared athletes in the prestigious quadrennial meet that got delayed by a year due to Covid pandemic. Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, the first Filipino to win an Olympic gold medal, will be at the helm together with other standouts like pole vaulter EJ Obiena, swimmer Kayla Sanchez, and boxers Eumir Marcial, Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam. Although expectations will be tempered on the chances of Diaz as she will compete in the heavier 59-kilogram category, she is still expected to make her presence felt as she had already warmed up in the World Weightlifting Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia after finishing seventh. Even the boxers will be ready as they are coming off an intensive training in India and Australia in a bid to dominate the Asian Games that will also serve as a qualifying tourney for the Paris Olympics. Tolentino said he has high hopes for the 396-man national delegation. “We are very much prepared. Some of our athletes are coming off from their training abroad,” said Tolentino, who will join Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richard “Dickie” Bachmann in leading the send-off ceremony for Team Philippines on Monday at the Philippine International Convention Center. In the previous edition of the Asian Games in Jakarta in 2018, the Filipinos finished 19th after pocketing four gold, two silver and 15 bronze medals. It was the country’s best finish since grabbing five gold medals in 1951 in New Delhi, seven gold medals in 1962 in Jakarta, eight gold medals in 1958 in Tokyo and 14 gold medals in 1954 in Manila. The first batch of Filipino athletes had already left for Hangzhou. First to leave were Olympian Cris Nievarez and the national rowing team composed of Joanie Delgaco, Tammy Sha, Feiza Lenton, Edgar Ilas, and Zuriel Sumintac with coaches Shukhrat Ganiev, Ed Maerina, Nic Jasmin and Con Fornea. The rowers will kick off their campaign in the men’s single sculls, lightweight men’s double sculls, women’s single sculls, and lightweight women’s double sculls on Wednesday at the Olympic Sports Expo Center. Also first to arrive in the bustling city in Hangzhou, the capital and most populous city in Zhejiang Province, are the staff of the national women’s football team, windsurfers and indoor and beach volleyball players. The national booters, popularly known as the Filipinas, are expected to arrive in the coming days in batches as they kick off their campaign on Tuesday. Tolentino said exceeding their performance in the previous Asian Games will already be considered as a success. “This will be the best of the team. We hope to exceed our performance for the last four years,” said Tolentino, who is pinning his hopes on Diaz as well as Asia’s best vaulter Obiena, Olympic medalists Marcial, Petecio and Paalam, and two-time Olympic medalist Sanchez. “We have high hopes for medals in weightlifting, boxing, swimming, and e-sports, with potential surprises in martial arts as well.” The post Tolentino: Our athletes are prepared appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Mexico, Pampanga honors BCDA chief Joshua Bingcang
Bases Conversion and Development Authority President and Chief Executive Officer Engr. Joshua M. Bingcang was recently commended by his hometown Mexico, Pampanga for his dedication to public service and exemplary leadership, enabling him to rise from the ranks. The Sangguniang Bayan of Mexico on 11 September 2023 presented Bingcang a copy of Municipal Resolution No. 138-2023, which expresses the municipality’s “pride and honor” on the recent appointment of Bingcang to the top management position of BCDA. This comes on the heels of the Angeles City Council’s resolution last month commending Bingcang for bringing pride to the province of Pampanga. “Engr. Bingcang has performed vital tasks that prove his commitment and love for Pampanga and the Metro Clark areas through his roles in the planning and implementation of key projects,” a resolution issued by the Sangguniang Bayan of Mexico read. These are the completion of the Philippines’ longest toll road, the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway; the development of Clark Freeport Zone and the first phase of the National Government Administrative Center in New Clark City; as well as the expansion and modernization of Clark International Airport. “We at BCDA will not be able to achieve all these accomplishments without the help of our public and private sector partners, like the Municipality Government of Mexico. A lot still needs to be done. We would like to get your continued support as we move forward with our One Clark vision, which will further put Pampanga and the rest of Northern and Central Luzon into the center of investment and development,” Bingcang said. Papua New Guinea is fifth nation to open Jerusalem embassy
Pacific island nation Papua New Guinea opened its embassy to Israel in Jerusalem on Tuesday, becoming only the fifth country to have its mission in the holy city. The status of Jerusalem is the most sensitive issue of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister James Marape inaugurated the embassy in the presence of his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu at a function in Jerusalem. "Many nations choose not to open their embassies in Jerusalem, but we made the conscious choice," said Marape, whose country previously had no embassy in Israel. "For us to call ourselves Christian, paying respect to God will not be complete without recognizing that Jerusalem is the universal capital of the people and nation of Israel," he said, inviting Netanyahu to open Israel's embassy in Papua New Guinea. Netanyahu welcomed the opening of the mission in Jerusalem, making Papua New Guinea the first Asia-Pacific country to do so. "We are very proud and very appreciative of that fact," he said, adding that the new link between the two countries "will not only enable us to cherish the past, but seize the future". Most of the countries that have a formal diplomatic presence in Israel have their embassies in Tel Aviv, the country's commercial center. Only a handful of countries have their missions in Jerusalem -- the United States, Kosovo, Guatemala, and Honduras. Papua New Guinea's decision follows a landmark security pact, tabled in the country's parliament in June and obtained by AFP, which allows the US military to develop and operate out of bases in Papua New Guinea. The pact underpins Washington's effort to outflank China in the Pacific. After capturing it in 1967, Israel annexed east Jerusalem, including the Old City, in a move never recognized by the international community. Israel views the whole city as its capital, a stance backed by former US president Donald Trump, who moved Washington's embassy there. About 230,000 Israelis live in annexed east Jerusalem, along with at least 360,000 Palestinians who want to make the sector the capital of their future independent state. Peace talks have been moribund since 2014, and violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has intensified since last year. Storm ‘Haikui’ heads to China
Typhoon “Haikui” toppled hundreds of trees, damaged coastal roads and dumped torrential rains across Taiwan Monday before it weakened into a severe storm and headed for southern China. “Haikui” had initially appeared to depart the island but made a second landfall early Monday in southwest Kaohsiung, before it was downgraded to a severe tropical storm as it moved out into the Taiwan Strait. There were no reports of deaths, but destruction was seen in coastal Taitung, a mountainous county in lesser-populated eastern Taiwan where the storm directly hit the day before. “I’ve lived here for so long and I have never seen such wind gusts,” said Chen Hai-feng, 55, a village chief in Taitung’s Donghe township, where he was with an early-morning work crew removing trees from a road. Although “Haikui” is considered to be less severe than previous storms, Chen said it felt more powerful. “It came straight through us.” Workers carefully maneuvered diggers to move downed tree branches and electrical wiring that had snapped and splayed across the rain-drenched road. Further north in coastal Changbin township, workers ferried massive concrete blocks to a coastal highway that had partially collapsed from the force of waves slamming into it, hoping they would absorb the impact. Heavy orange-colored barriers were placed near the edge to prevent cars from skidding over on the slippery roads. “Haikui” — the first typhoon landfall in Taiwan in four years — forced the evacuation of more than 7,000 people across the island, particularly from landslide-prone mountainous regions. Hundreds of flights were cancelled and businesses were closed. More than 217,000 households temporarily lost power through Sunday and overnight. By midday Monday, 11,000 homes still had no electricity, while schools and businesses remained closed in 14 cities as torrential rain bucketed down. A forecaster with Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau said “Haikui” initially appeared to track away from the island and out to sea but made a second landfall in Kaohsiung at around 4 a.m. During the night “the center of the typhoon was almost circling” the port city, but as it moved along the coastline “the structure of the typhoon is damaged by the terrain and gradually weakens,” she said. with afp The post Storm ‘Haikui’ heads to China appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Malcolm Gladwell explains what makes the new generation tick
How are people interacting with the world today? Renowned Canadian writer and bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell, as keynote speaker of SM Supermalls’ Tenant-Partners Summit held on Monday, 4 September, posed this question to explain how retailers may reach the younger market. [caption id="attachment_179648" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Malcolm Gladwell (Photo by Dinah S. Ventura)[/caption] “People in the past recognized a hierarchy,” he said. When it comes to engaging the youth in the previous generations, there was always a “leader, an ideology and strategy.” Social movement in the social media age had radically changed things so that mass participation is no longer ruled by the same concept. Nowadays, it’s about people connecting on social media and showing up for some kind of protest or participation. “My generation’s default was the hierarchy,” said Gladwell, who just turned another year older the day before the event held at SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. “The new generation’s default is the network,” he added. “I don’t think a hierarchy or a network is better or worse. What we need is to understand.” In celebration of SM’s 65th anniversary, Gladwell visited Manila along with Emma Chiu, global director of Wunderman Thompson, a creative agency. Gladwell, as information in the SM website states, “is known for his skills in simplifying complex concepts and making them appealing, engaging and accessible." He is recognized for his New York Times bestsellers: “Outliers,” “The Tipping Point,” “Blink”, and “What the Dog Saw.” Chiu, meanwhile, “takes charge of producing thought-leadership macro trend reports, including the popular almanac, ‘The Future 100.’” Currently operating 83 malls in the Philippines and seven malls in China, SM Supermalls aims to have 100 malls by 2026, a feat they see possible with partnerships with “the world’s best retailers,” among other factors including engaging today’s diverse market. Storm Haikui heads to China after double landfall in Taiwan
Typhoon Haikui toppled hundreds of trees, damaged coastal roads and dumped torrential rains across Taiwan Monday before it weakened into a severe storm and headed for southern China. Haikui had initially appeared to depart the island but made a second landfall early Monday in southwest Kaohsiung, before it was downgraded to a severe tropical storm as it moved out into the Taiwan Strait. There were no reports of deaths, but destruction was seen in coastal Taitung, a mountainous county in lesser-populated eastern Taiwan where the storm directly hit the day before. Heavy orange-colored barriers were placed near the edge to prevent cars from skidding over on the slippery roads. Haikui -- the first typhoon landfall in Taiwan in four years -- forced the evacuation of more than 7,000 people across the island, particularly from landslide-prone mountainous regions. Hundreds of flights were cancelled and businesses were closed. More than 217,000 households temporarily lost power through Sunday and overnight. By midday Monday, 11,000 homes still had no electricity, while schools and businesses remained closed in 14 cities as torrential rain bucketed down. A forecaster with Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau said Haikui initially appeared to track away from the island and out to sea but made a second landfall in Kaohsiung at around 4:00 am (2000 GMT Sunday). During the night "the center of the typhoon was almost circling" the port city, but as it moved along the coastline "the structure of the typhoon is damaged by the terrain and gradually weakens", she said. By mid-day, the storm had moved southwest of Taiwan's outlying island of Penghu, but was still bringing torrential rain and strong winds to the south and northeast. In picturesque Hualien county, waterfalls cascaded down the lush cliffs along Taiwan's east coast, while market vendors in Keelung -- a northern port city surrounded by mountains -- braved the rain to sell fruit to raincoat-clad shoppers. In Kaohsiung, the local government reported hundreds of toppled trees and flooding in dozens of locations, although the situation was easing as the storm departed and the weather conditions improved. Nearly 80 people suffered injuries during the typhoon, according to authorities, though they were minor -- mostly due to fallen trees and car accidents. Chinese carmakers confront European industry at Munich show
Chinese manufacturers will be out in force at next week's IAA auto show, one of the industry's biggest, revving their new electric models on the turf of German carmakers, which have been lagging in the e-mobility race. Elon Musk's Tesla, usually a hold-out from such events, will also make an appearance at the show in Munich, joining the jostle to steal the spotlight from Europe's biggest brands. The industry fair, which opens Tuesday with a speech from Chancellor Olaf Scholz, comes with clouds gathering for the automotive sector in Europe and in particular, Germany. While suffocating supply chain problems have eased from the pandemic years, European auto giants are struggling to cope with increased energy costs in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine last year. Although sales in the European Union have steadily improved over the last 12 months, they remain around 20 percent below their pre-coronavirus levels as inflation and higher interest rates dampen appetite for new vehicles. At the same time, European manufacturers are facing increasingly stiff competition from Chinese carmakers which are touting their vehicles at far lower prices. Local upstarts have captured an increasingly large part of the prized Chinese market and are threatening to dominate the growing trade in electric vehicles. Chinese groups were starting "their assault on Europe with the IAA", said industry analyst Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer from the Center Automotive Research in Germany. "The IAA 2023 maps out a new automobile world in Europe. Competition will be tougher. After the Chinese battery factories, their automobile makers are coming," he said, calling it a "turning point" for the industry. In all, 41 percent of exhibitors at the industry fair have their headquarters in China, including brands such as BYD and Leapmotor which will hope to steal the spotlight from German giants Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. Contrary to the Asian onslaught, participation from other European makers is muted. Opel will be US-European conglomerate Stellantis's lone ambassador in Munich, while Renault is showcasing only its eponymous marque at the show. In contrast, Musk's Tesla was slowly falling in line with traditional manufacturers as "the brand that doesn't do marketing begins to do exactly that" with its first appearance at the IAA, said independent analyst Matthias Schmidt. - Petrol protest - Over the week, around 700,000 visitors are expected to attend the show, split between exhibition halls and the city center. The move away from combustion engines to electric vehicles -- and the bigger climate question -- will take center stage inside and outside the exhibition halls. As carmakers roll out their latest offerings, climate groups have vowed protests at the fair, including "civil disobedience" aimed at disrupting the IAA. The last edition of the show in 2021 was already troubled by small-scale protests. This time around, some 1,500 people are expected at a camp in a suburban Munich park promoting a "revolution in mobility". Car manufacturers were "destroying the lives of countless people worldwide with their growth imperative", one of the climate groups said ahead of the fair. Automotive groups have not helped their case recently by recording massive profits on the back of strong inflation. Manufacturers -- particularly those at the high end of the market -- have been able to benefit from rising prices to boost their margins. A growing climate consciousness movement is increasingly pitting environmental activists against carmakers. Mindful of society's changing views on automobiles, the IAA upped sticks from Frankfurt to Munich in 2021 and restyled itself as a festival for all forms of "mobility" -- bringing bikes and scooters into the fold. As well as cleaning up its image, the move was an attempt to reinvigorate traditional motor shows. The marquee events have struggled to attract manufacturers, who are doubtful that they create enough publicity to be worth the bother. In 2022, the Paris Motor Show saw visitor numbers dwindle, as it was cut in length from two weeks to one. Many big European names, such as Volkswagen, BMW, and Ferrari were absent from the French fair, to which Chinese carmakers like BYD by contrast turned up. It’s about the donut, not the hole
While the gale from the north is fraught with incendiary sound bites on what’s taking place in the West Philippine Sea, Davao is getting ready for its next shipment of tuna sashimi, durian, fresh buko (young coconut), and other agricultural products to Zhenshen, China. Zhenshen is only three hours and 30 minutes via direct flight from Davao City, thus the cargo gets there fresh. This is another exciting development that makes farmers and fishermen ebullient. Earlier, a few tons of tuna were exported to China, followed later by a bigger volume of durian. This time, PHILEXPORT Davao City chapter president Domingo Ang, who owns Marina Tuna Restaurants in the city, and his fellow businessmen will embark on a bigger shipment. The Davao region is the country’s biggest exporter of agricultural products. Top on the list are Cavendish bananas. Japan absorbs an export volume valued at $700 million annually, but China started loving the taste of the fruit as it now consumes about $420 million worth of bananas. Hong Kong separately imports about $25 million, South Korea devours $200 million, and Saudi Arabia eats $34.3 million worth of bananas. The United States is the smallest export market with a volume worth $356,000. Ang is confident that value-wise, tuna sashimi, other marine fish varieties that are successfully “farmed” in the calm Davao Gulf, durian and fresh coconuts, among others, will add upwards of about $1 billion to Davao’s economy. He pointed out that if fresh buko makes it in the China market, you can expect an additional bonanza for coconut growers. Davao is also the biggest producer of coconuts in the Philippines. Ang, whose father pioneered the tuna industry in Mindanao, is especially happy with the new export development for the fisherfolk and fruit growers in Davao. Fishermen can organize themselves into cooperatives and avail of loans since they are now bankable. They can then jointly own fleets of fishing boats. Individually, they can raise fish in cages and be assured of ready buyers in China. The potential for fishermen is limitless and Doming Ang hopes the government will allow the fishermen to fish beyond municipal waters. This brings us to our dispute with China over an atoll in the West Philippine Sea. Yonder nearly every island is claimed by our neighbor countries. Some of these islands have been quietly occupied by them while we are exchanging barbs with China. Our ambivalence makes laggards out of us. We have missed opportunities. There was this offer by China to jointly explore and mine the rich oil deposit in the WPS, with a 60/40 deal in favor of the Philippines. Had the deal been inked we would be in a different situation today. The WPS is just a small part of the South China Sea. Underneath the water are $26 trillion worth of oil and gas deposits. Today we are facing the biggest challenge as food and oil prices have escalated beyond our imagination. The peso is now breaching $57 to $1. Despite this stark prospect of stagnation, this government is not keen on enhancing our agricultural productivity, and exploring the potentialities of our energy resource is zero on its agenda. The simpletons still rely on importation. Against the apprehensions of some senators and the freaking spokesperson of the Philippine Coast Guard, China need not fire a single shot to cripple this government. Look at how and where our economy is weighing in. The Western drum beaters are saying that the United States is our biggest trading partner, accounting for $12.5 billion of our exports. Japan comes next with $11.1 billion, mainland China is third with $11 billion, and Hong Kong is fourth at $10.5 billion. But lump together China and HK, its administrative region, and you have $21 billion total. Go figure out what fate awaits us. Marcos should be circumspect about his options. He ought to see the donut and not the hole. The post It’s about the donut, not the hole appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
SM and TESDA to elevate education and employment collaborations
SM Supermalls affirmed its commitment to providing learning and upskilling opportunities to Filipinos during the 29th founding anniversary celebration of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority held at the SM Megamall Event Center last 22 August. TESDA has planned a series of events that emphasize the value of Technical Vocational Education and Training in boosting the socio-economic standing of Filipinos, including an orientation on labor education for graduating students and employment coaching; skills demonstrations on cooking, basic life support, and first aid for vehicular accidents, and smart farming; and a symposium on Gender and Development. The celebration is also in accordance with Republic Act No. 7796 which declares every 25th of August as "National Technical-Vocational (Tech-Voc) Day," which highlights job linking, TVET enrollment, and product displays and trade fairs from different regions across the country. Go calls for vigilance, continued bayanihan
Recognizing the heightened vulnerability that comes with the onset of the typhoon season, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go emphasized the importance of preparedness and cooperation during typhoon season, urging citizens to stay informed about weather updates and heed the advice of local authorities to ensure their safety and that of their families. Go made the remarks as his team provided grocery packs to 500 typhoon “Egay” victims in Kalinga on Thursday, 10 August, in coordination with Governor James Edduba. In Tabuk City, Kalinga, the relief operations were held at Purok Isla and Purok 2 in Barangay San Juan, and Purok Vicente in Barangay Magsaysay As part of his commitment to ensure the welfare of Filipinos, Go reminded the beneficiaries that there are six Malasakit Centers in the Cordillera Administrative Region if they require assistance to cover their medical expenses. These Malasakit Centers are located at the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center, Benguet General Hospital in La Trinidad, Far North Luzon General Hospital and Training Center and Conner District Hospital in Apayao, and Luis Hora Memorial Regional Hospital and Bontoc General Hospital in Mountain Province. With a total of 158 centers established nationwide, the Malasakit Centers program has already provided assistance to more than seven million indigent patients. This initiative was spearheaded by Go and later formalized under Republic Act 11463, a legislative measure he principally authored and sponsored. Meanwhile, Go called on the government to provide the structure for a truly integrated and comprehensive national sports program linking grassroots sports promotion to elite sports development, and encourage all local government officials to promote the development of sports in the countryside. Go made the remarks during the public hearing of the Committee on Sports Monday, 14 August where he tackled the Philippine National Games Bill and the upgrading of incentives for Para Athletes Bill. The Philippine National Games bill seeks to institutionalize a truly comprehensive national grassroots sports program that will harness the vast potential of Filipinos in discovering and developing champion athletes who could excel in international sports competitions. “Through the years, we have witnessed how the Filipino athletes stand out in various international sports competitions, such as the Southeast Asian Games, the Asian Games, para games, world championships and Olympics. The accomplishments of our athletes have inspired and brought pride to the Filipino people, demonstrating that we can excel in sports with hard work, perseverance and determination,” Go said. Bong Go extends aid to Kalinga typhoon victims, calls for greater disaster vigilance
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go had his team provide grocery packs to 500 Typhoon Egay victims in Kalinga on Thursday, 10 August, in coordination with Governor James Edduba. In Tabuk City, Kalinga, the relief operations were held at Purok Isla and Purok 2 in Barangay San Juan, and Purok Vicente in Barangay Magsaysay. Recognizing the heightened vulnerability that comes with the onset of the typhoon season, Go emphasized the importance of preparedness and cooperation within communities. He urged citizens to stay informed about weather updates and heed the advice of local authorities to ensure their safety and that of their families. As part of his commitment to ensure the welfare of Filipinos, Go also reminded the beneficiaries that there are six Malasakit Centers in the Cordillera Administrative Region if they require assistance to cover their medical expenses. This initiative was spearheaded by Go and later formalized under Republic Act No. 11463, a legislative measure he principally authored and sponsored. “Patuloy po akong tutulong sa pagpaparami ng Malasakit Centers sa bansa. Andiyan na po sa loob ang apat na ahensya ng gobyerno para sa mga available na medical assistance programs. Target po nito na pababain nito ang inyong hospital bill to the lowest amount possible,” Go explained. “Huwag ho kayong mahihiyang lumapit sa mga Malasakit Centers. Para po yan sa Pilipino. Nalulungkot po ako tuwing may mga nagaalangan magpatingin sa doctor dahil natatakot sila sa babayaran sa hospital. Pangalagaan niyo po ang inyong kalusugan at ang Malasakit Center ay handang tumulong sa inyo,” he added. Go, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, also supported the construction of a Super Health Center (SHC) in Lagawe, which will offer basic health services, such as database management, out-patient, birthing, isolation, diagnostic (laboratory: x-ray and ultrasound), pharmacy and ambulatory surgical unit. Other available services are eye, ear, nose, and throat service, oncology centers, physical therapy and rehabilitation center and telemedicine, which makes remote diagnosis and treatment of patients possible. “Sa panahong ito, magtulungan tayo upang maipagpatuloy ang pagbangon at pag-asa. Patuloy nating ipagdasal ang isa't isa at patuloy na magmalasakit sa ating mga kapwa Pilipino,” said Go.
