Commissioner Bernie Sumayao comments on Davao Aguilas exit, state of Philippine Premier League

Not even a month into his new job as the commissioner of the Philippine Premier League (PPL) - the Philippine football club league that will take the place of the Philippines Football League or PFL - Bernie Sumayao is already facing some challenges, the latest being the folding of the Davao Aguilas FC Football club.  It was reported in early December that the Davao-based club, which features Azkals stars Phil and James Younghusband among others, would be withdrawing from the newly-rebranded club league.  Sumayao stated that he had recieved and accepted Davao's request for withdrawal. “I have been informed about the withdrawal of the Davao Aguilas, and have received it with a heavy heart. When an important team departs the league, it is always a cause of concern." Davao finished second-runners up in the 2018 PFL tournament, behind only Kaya FC-Iloilo and two-time champions Ceres-Negros FC. With Davao's exit however, Sumayao shared that there are those that are interested in participating in the PPL.  "However, we have also been approached by a number of teams that have expressed strong interest in joining the PPL. We are currently evaluating the merits of each applicant." Sumayao continued by saying that he knew exactly what he was getting into by taking over the Philippine club football scene.  "When I first approached the PFF about taking over the reins of the Philippine Football League, I knew about the difficult challenges that it was facing. I felt, like most football fans, that the league was at a crossroads. There was no revenue being generated, no national sponsorship, no TV media, limited attendance at the stadiums, numerous restrictions being enforced on fan activity inside the stadiums, and many more factors that would have challenged the very existence of the league." "I knew there was no 'quick fix', and that the road to recovery will take some time. I also knew that in order to get back on track, we have to have a more professional and structured approach to operating the league. Most importantly, the league needs to take very good care and listen intently to the concerns of its stakeholders – the Federation, the owners of the teams, the players, and most importantly, the fans. The fans are the fuel that drives the engine. Without the fans, even the most organized league will never survive,” he continued.  Sumayao then went on to elaborate what he believes is necessary for the PPL to prosper in the country.  "The league will only prosper when we start to understand and implement the concepts of discipline, accountability, responsibility, and unity. These are not merely words, but are a way of life and the path to success. I have stepped in at a very difficult time. It was either witness the decline of Philippine pro football as a distant observer, or start working and do something about it. I chose to do something about it. I also believed that the league should be a concerted effort of the teams that participate in it. This is where it becomes important to have a unified stance, strength in numbers. Where politics need to give way to discipline and compassion. In order for the league to prosper, the team owners must also be able to make sense of the financial burden it has to undertake and somehow find a way to recover their investments. It must have the help and support to generate its own revenue, which will lead to financial independence. All of this will take time, but we need to start now. It all starts with a small step with all stakeholders moving in the same direction.” Finally, Sumayao clarified that the PPL is in no means a reincarnation of its predecessors, but instead a whole new entity that is fully focused on brining club football to an elite level in the Philippines.  “The PPL is not a reincarnation of the UFL, PFL or any other previous leagues. It is a new, neutral, independent league whose main objective is to contribute to the development of football in the country. It is also the gateway to the AFC Champions League and the AFC Cup. We are not here for the money nor the glory. We have no political or opportunistic hidden agendas. We are here to work for the country. That is why I have always been appealing, especially to the many frustrated fans, to stay positive and never give up hope. Change is never easy. But it is a catalyst of progress. So I am appealing to all the stakeholders of football in the Philippines to support change and adapt. Let us move past all the criticisms and negativity and embrace change in the pursuit of progress and stability.” “The PPL will soon actively engage in news dissemination, give periodic updates about its plans on the development of the league, and conduct regular communication exchanges for fans on social media. See you all at the PPL kick-off on March 2019," Sumayao concluded.   .....»»

Ceres Negros wins 9-0 in 2018 AFC Cup opener

Three players scored twice while two others chipped in as well to power Bacolod-based football club Ceres Negros FC to a resounding 9-0 win over Cambodia's Boeung Ket Angkor to open their 2018 AFC Asian Cup campaign, Tuesday evening at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod.  Japanese forward Takumi Uesato opened the floodgates for Ceres Negros, so to speak, as he was the first to get on the board with a goal in the 15th minute.  Four minutes later, Spanish striker Bienve Marañon made it a 2-0 advantage for the home team.  Uesato and Marañon would each score one more time, to make it a comfortable 4-0 advantage in just 29 minutes of action.  OJ Porteria found the back of the net in the 31st minute to make it a 5-0 scoreline even before the midgame break.  As if The Busmen needed any more help on the offensive end, Boeung Ket Angkor defender Sun Sovannarith kicked the action off in the second half with an own goal in the 58th minute to make it a 6-0 lead for the Pinoy side.  Skipper Carlie De Murga and substiture Manny Ott both added a goal each, in the 64th and 81st minutes respectively, while Porteria scored once more to put the final touch with five minutes left in regulation.  The dominant win puts the inaugural PFL champions at the top of the standing in Group F with a win and three points. Singapore's Home United sits at second with an identical one win and three point-standing, while Shan United and Boeung Ket Angkor round out the group, each with a loss.  Ceres Negros return to action on February 27th when they head to Singapore for a showdown with Home United at the Jalan Besar Stadium. .....»»

Pinoy club Global Cebu falls short in 2018 AFC Cup opener

A late goal from Senegalese forward Pape Omar Faye proved to be the difference, as Filipino club Global Cebu FC came up short in their 2018 AFC Cup opener against Vietnamese club FLC Than Hoa at the My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi, Saturday. A tightly contested first half saw neither side give up any goals, leading to a scoreless stalemate at halftime. Fortune favored the home team in the 74th minute, as Faye turned a cross from Nguyen Xuan Thanh into a perfectly-placed header that sailed past Global keeper Patrick Deyto and into the back of the net. The Pinoy side couldn’t come up with an equalizer as Than Hoa held on for the victory. The win propels Than Hoa to the top of the Group G standings, with a win and three points. Ceres Negros FC bows out of AFC Champions League race after loss to Tianjin

It was the end of the line for Filipino club Ceres Negros FC after they fell to Chinese club Tianjin Quanjian, 2-0 in Tianjin, China to bow out of the 2018 AFC Champions League tournament. French striker Anthony Modeste proved to be the thorn on Ceres Negros’ side, scoring both goals for the home side. Modeste’s first strike came in at the 19th minute, scoring off a header from a well-timed corner kick. The second came at the 57th minute when he breezed through the Ceres defenses before beating keeper Toni Doblas once more for the 2-0 advantage. The visiting Pinoy side looked to rally back, but couldn’t find the same magic that brought them to the playoff round of the AFC Champions League. As a result, Tianjin Quanjian books their spot in the group stages of the tournament. It was a spirited run for the inaugural PFL champions, who looked to make Philippine football history by becoming the first club to qualify for the AFC Champions League. Ceres Negros stuns Brisbane Roar to advance in AFC Champions league

Filipino football club Ceres Negros FC went into enemy territory and came away victorious, taking down Brisbane Roar 3-2, Tuesday afternoon in Brisbane, Australia to advance into the playoff round of the 2018 AFC Champions League.  The two-time A-League champions got off to a hot start after Massimo Maccarone got the home team on the board in the 35th minute.  Spanish star striker Bienve Marañon came up big for the visiting UFL champions once again, as he hit the equalizer in the 43rd minute to keep Ceres in the match.  Marañon kept it going as he converted once more in the 65th minute to give the Pinoy side the advantage.    Omid Nazari put the match out of Brisbane's reach after scoring in the 75th minute to make it a 3-1 advantage for Ceres Negros.  Eric Bautheac pulled one back in the 86th minute to make it a 3-2 match, but that would be the last of it as Ceres Negros held on for what many consider to be a massive upset.  After wins over Shan United and Brisbane Roar, Ceres Negros will continue their AFC Champions League campaign into the playoff round, where they'll be taking on Chinese Super League club Tianjin Quanjian at the Tianjin Olympic Center Stadium in Tianjin, China on January 30th.  The winner of that matchup will advance into the group stages.  No Filipino club has ever qualified for the annual tournament, which means Ceres Negros is one win away from making Filipino football history. .....»»
