UAAP VOLLEYBALL: UST silences Adamson in sweep

Depleted University of Sto. Tomas snapped Adamson University’s two-game winning streak with a 25-9,31-29, 25-19, victory Sunday in the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. Coming off a four-set loss to Ateneo de Manila University a week ago and missing the services of injured Fil-Italian Milena Alessandrini and libero Rica Rivera, the Tigresses vented their ire on the Lady Falcons to even their record to 2-2 tied with their victim, the Lady Eagles and Far Eastern University. Sisi Rondina played her usual explosive game, firing 22 points off 17 kills, four aces and a kill block while adding 16 digs for an all-around effort for the Espana-based squad. Dimdim Pacres and Carla Sandoval stepped up to score 13 and nine markers, respectively, for the Tigresses, who lost Rivera to a meniscus tear on her right knee early in the opening set of their game against Ateneo and Alessandrini to a right shoulder injury. Rivera is out for at least three weeks while Alessandrini will skip the rest of the first round. "Sabi ko lahat ng nangyayari may reason. Ang mga locals ito na ang pagkakataon and nag-respond naman sila para sa mga nawala," said Tigresses coach Kungfu Reyes.   UST was on fire to open the match but found trouble in the second set. But a gritty comeback in the second frame highlighted by saving five set points took the fight out of the Lady Falcons that the Tigers used as fuel to cruise in the third. Jema Galanza finished with 10 points while Mylene Paat and rookie Chiara Permentilla were limited to a combined 12 markers for Adamson.      --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

Cross Court: Basketball-volleyball power couples

Aside from titles won, awards garnered and lessons learned this year, a handful of Filipino athletes have found, and nurtured love between another fellow sports star. One could just imagine how two hearts meet in the harsh battlefield of sports especially coming from different fronts. Fate led some of the stars from the country’s top two sports – basketball and volleyball – to cross paths and develop a blooming romance. Here are some of the power couples coming from the said sports.   Bong and Mozzy Ravena The perfect example in this list. Bong was a successful basketball star during his UAAP days with University of the East, the PBA and MBA while Mozzy donned the University of Sto. Tomas jersey as a volleyball varsity player. The union produced three kids who followed their footsteps. Kiefer and Thirdy are making their own mark as basketball standouts while their sister Dani has a budding career as a rookie setter for Ateneo de Manila University.         Kiefer Ravena and Alyssa Valdez What is a King Phenom without a Queen Phenom? Arguably, the most popular sports couple of this generation, former Ateneo de Manila University King Eagle Kiefer Ravena and ex-Queen Eagle Alyssa Valdez are the equivalent of the country’s best teleserye loveteams.       LA Revilla and Denden Lazaro   I love you past the moon and beyond the stars, baby ❤️ Happy Valentine's Day! ❤️ . @larevilla A post shared by Dennise Lazaro (@denniselazaro) on Feb 14, 2017 at 4:05am PST Whoever said that blue and green won’t mix has been living under a rock. UAAP Season 80 Men’s Football: Ateneo, De La Salle rekindle rivalry on the football pitch

Collegiate rivals Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University collide on the pitch for the first time this season as the Men’s Football Tournament of UAAP Season 80 rolls on Thursday at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium. Coming off their first win of the season, defending champions Ateneo look to keep their momentum going as they face off against a rejuvenated Green Archers squad. “Kung titignan natin, La Salle had a good start, yung frontline players nila ang worry ko ngayon, yung size, of course we need to be ready,” said Ateneo head coach JP Merida. Ateneo came back from a goal down to beat National University, 3-1, last Sunday, behind a spirited performance from birthday boy Jarvey Gayoso, who had his hand in all three of the defending champions’ goals, scoring one and assisting on the other two. Speaking of momentum, the Green Archers are riding a ton of momentum heading into this rivalry matchup. After their win over last season’s runners-up FEU a week ago, the Green Archers followed up with a dominant 2-0 win over Adamson University, Sunday. “It’s just another team. We’ll just play the same way we trained for.” said DLSU head coach Hans-Peter Smit. “There’s nothing special with any other team, just like us, there’s nothing special. It’s just whoever wants to win more, who has brought their A-game, and who wants to finish the game on a high note.” Ateneo and DLSU kick off at 4:00 PM.   In the morning game, another squad looks to remain unbeaten in the season as University of the Philippines meets Adamson University. The Fighting Maroons are riding high off their hot start, winning their first two matches against Ateneo and University of the East. The Soaring Falcons on the other hand try to get their first win of the season after back-to-back losses against University of Santo Tomas and DLSU. UP and Adamson kick off at 9:00 AM.   In the first televised matchup of the day, UST guns for their third straight victory against a struggling NU side. After getting bounced by eventual champions Ateneo in the Season 79 semis, the Growling Tigers are off to an impressive start, already scoring wins over FEU and Adamson. The same can’t be said for the Bulldogs, who after nearly making the playoffs a season ago, find themselves struggling and losing both of their first matches against UE and Ateneo. UST and NU kick off at 2:00 PM.   Catch the exciting UAAP men’s football action LIVE starting at 2:00 PM on ABS-CBN S+A channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD channel 166, Liga channel 83, Liga HD channel 186, and livestreaming on sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/uaap.....»»
