Yet again, Coach Bo wants UP to embrace expectations
It still needs getting used to, but there is no doubt the University of the Philippines remains a legitimate contender in UAAP Men's Basketball. With Bright Akhuetie, Kobe Paras, and Ricci Rivero still in tow and with 11 offseason additions, including former University of Sto. Tomas team captain CJ Cansino, the Fighting Maroons are nothing but upbeat that they would not skip a beat in Season 83 and the foreseeable future. This, even though still staring State U in the face is four-peat-seeking Ateneo de Manila University. For head coach Bo Perasol, however, the maroon and green's goal goes further than reigning and defending champion Ateneo. "It's not even about spoiling Ateneo's four-peat. It's just getting the chance to again be champions," he said in his appearance on Coaches Unfiltered. Of course, that is a tall hurdle for a team that is just two years removed from ending a 21-year Final Four drought and a 32-year Finals absence. Another aspect of changing the culture, though, is marching forward despite all that. As their always amiable mentor put it, "Alam mo, marami laging nagsasabi na, 'Coach, you have to tone down the expectations.' Sabi ko naman, 'Anong ito-tone down natin e lahat naman, gusto mag-champion 'di ba?'" He then continued, "Hindi mo masasabihan ang mga taong you can't expect much from this UP team. Hindi eh. Hindi pwede yun." That means having a singular goal no matter the noise. "It doesn't matter what others think. The only thing that should be on our mind is to be champions after three decades," Coach Bo said. He then continued, "That's my role as a head coach - to give us that position to be able to accomplish that." Yes, for the second straight season, UP is out for the championship - and not just a playoff berth. "Tapos na yung entering the Final Four. Tapos na yung laban, laban, laban lang tayo. Tapos na yan," Perasol said. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

Coach Aldin says marked differences led to parting of ways with CJ Cansino
Aldin Ayo and CJ Cansino just grew apart from each other. This is the reason the University of Sto. Tomas head coach pointed to for his former team captain's shock exit. "The circumstances of life today have brought out the marked differences between my orientation in life and the fundamental option of CJ Cansino," coach Aldin said in his first statement since Cansino's departure from Espana. UST head coach Aldin Ayo has broken his silence on @cjcansino and the alleged Bicol Bubble. pic.twitter.com/Ur9mUVvrD2 — No Work Normie Riego (@riegogogo) August 23, 2020 He then continued, "We have found that it would be best that we part ways and allow maximum growth for each other." Last Thursday, the 6-foot-2 swingman decided to move on from UST, his alma mater of the last five years, due to personal reasons. Since then, he has transferred to the University of the Philippines all while his ex-mentor kept mum on the matter. Now, the one-time NCAA and one-time UAAP champion coach said that the continuing COVID-19 crisis has made it all the more evident that he and Cansino are no longer walking the same path. Still, coach Aldin expressed his thanks to the very first player he recruited once he was installed as the Growling Tigers' shot-caller. "We wish him the best of providence in his new endeavor with a different team. We express our gratitude for the years and effor he poured so generously for UST," he said. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
Coach Aldin fully cooperating in probe into alleged Bicol Bubble
Aldin Ayo has acknowledged that there is an internal investigation regarding recent issues involving the University of Sto. Tomas Men's Basketball Team. "Regarding the alleged ' bubble training' in Sorsogon, I will not comment for now as UST is already investigating the matter," he said in a statement released Sunday evening. "I am fully cooperating and praying that in due time, this will be properly addressed." UST head coach Aldin Ayo has broken his silence on @cjcansino and the alleged Bicol Bubble. pic.twitter.com/Ur9mUVvrD2 — No Work Normie Riego (@riegogogo) August 23, 2020 Earlier, UST itself confirmed that it is, indeed, already looking into the so-called "Bicol Bubble" overseen by coach Aldin. This was in response to recent reports that the Growling Tigers have been in Sorsogon since June, or in the midst of the continuing COVID-19 crisis. According to ABS-CBN News' Camille Naredo, as of late, CJ Cansino, doing his duty as team captain, told coaches and management about "their desire to go home." The report went on to say that what he did "was not taken well by Ayo." Not long after, Cansino was kicked off the team and then found himself in the University of the Philippines. That sudden exit and the reasons surrounding it has apparently opened a can of worms that now involved government agencies. Along with vowing continued cooperation, coach Aldin also said he was hoping he and the rest of the basketball community could be back on the court sooner than later. As he put it, "We fervently hope that our government, with our cooperation and active participation, find ways to effectively address the debilitating pandemic so we may be able to resume a certain normalcy." He then continued, "And return to the game we passionately love, drawing the best out of each other in pursuit of total human development." --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
UST: We do not tolerate violation of gov t regulation
University of Sto. Tomas has broken its silence about issues involving its Growling Tigers. The Espana-based has school confirmed that it is, indeed, already looking into its men's basketball team's so-called "Bicol Bubble" overseen by head coach Aldin Ayo. "We heard the news about the alleged breach of quarantine protocols by the UST Basketball Team in Sorsogon," its statement on Sunday said. "Accordingly, we created a committee to investigate and to inquire in this matter." pic.twitter.com/blFaLXqLnL — University of Santo Tomas (@UST1611official) August 22, 2020 Yesterday, the UAAP met with the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) and there, Executive Director Atty. Rebo Saguisag assured Chairman Abraham Mitra that actions have already been taken. The meeting was in response to recent reports that the Growling Tigers have been in Sorsogon since June, or in the midst of the continuing COVID-19 crisis. According to ABS-CBN News' Camille Naredo, as of late, CJ Cansino, doing his duty as team captain, told coaches and management about "their desire to go home." The report went on to say that what he did "was not taken well by Ayo." Not long after, Cansino was kicked off the team and is now set to transfer to the University of the Philippines. That sudden exit and the reasons surrounding it has apparently opened a can of worms that now involved government agencies. Finally reacting to all the developments, UST said that anything and everything done right now should be in accordance to safety and security measures enforced by the government. "While we adhere to the belief that physical activity can have a profoundly positive impact on physical and mental health, we believe that it should be done in compliance with guidelines issued by the government," the statement said. It then continued, "We wish to assure you that the University does not tolerate any form of violation of government regulation and it responds promptly by taking appropriate action." --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

CJ Cansino hints at mental health as reason behind sudden exit from UST
CJ Cansino has said again and again that he decided to move on from University of Sto. Tomas due to personal reasons. Little by little, it then became clearer and clearer that first, the 6-foot-2 swingman was kicked off the Growling Tigers and second, if he had his way, he would have stayed. Still, in his statements saying goodbye to UST and then saying hello to the University of the Philippines, he did not go into those personal reasons. That was until Saturday. In a chat with fellow Tomasino Mela Tunay, Cansino pointed to mental health as the root cause of anything and everything that has happened. "Mental health. Yun ang naging problema ko," the latter said in the former's online show, Anong Tunay? He then continued, "Inaatake ako ng anxiety, napansin ng family ko na pumapayat ako kasi nahihirapan akong matulog, nahihirapan akong kumain." The 20-year-old was answering Tunay's question about what was going on in the black and gold's alleged training bubble in Sorsogon. According to Camille Naredo of ABS-CBN News, UST has been in Coach Aldin's hometown since June. As of late, however, Cansino, doing his duty as team captain, told coaches and management about "their desire to go home." The report went on to say that what he did "was not taken well by Ayo." While he decided against discussing details about the so-called training bubble, the UP-bound guard reiterated that mental health matters - whenever and wherever. "Wag nating gawing biro yun kasi hanggang ngayon, akala nila, yung mental health, parang sipon lang na sobrang dali na hindi isipin," he shared. "Hindi ganun kadali yun. Kung ano-ano yung mararamdaman mo na akala mo, mentally strong ka na, pero hindi pala talaga." Without a doubt, taking care of his health is a priority for Cansino - and that very much includes his mental health. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
UAAP reminds member-schools to follow government rules amidst UST probe
University of Sto. Tomas is already looking into the Growling Tigers' so-called "Bicol bubble" overseen by head coach Aldin Ayo. The UAAP, through Executive Director Atty. Rebo Saguisag and President Nong Calanog of De La Salle University, met with the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) on Saturday after reports surfaced on the black and gold's alleged training sessions in their mentor's hometown. And there, the league assured the government agency that actions have already been taken by its member-school in question. "Atty. Rebo said that UST is conducting its own internal probe and promised to report to the UAAP soonest," GAB chairman Abraham Mitra said in a statement. According to Camille Naredo of ABS-CBN News, UST has been in Sorsogon since June. As of late, however, CJ Cansino, doing his duty as team captain, told coaches and management about "their desire to go home." The report went on to say that what he did "was not taken well by Ayo." Not long after, Cansino was kicked off the team and then found himself in the University of the Philippines. That sudden exit and the reasons surrounding it has apparently opened a can of worms that now involved government agencies. For its part, GAB reminded the UAAP and all sporting organizations to follow rules and regulations in the face of the continuing COVID-19 crisis. "The utmost importance is the safety of the players and students," Mitra said. That reminder, Saguisag said, would only be taken into heart by the league. "The league reiterates that it will always be guided by the lead governmental agencies and will not run counter to any of its directives. Hence, the cancellation of Season 82 and the opening of Season 83 will have to wait," he said. ABS-CBN Sports has contacted Coach Aldin, but he has refused to comment on the matter in the meantime. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
Subido, Abando bid goodbye to ex-King Tiger Cansino
Teammates past and present alike wish nothing but the best for University of Sto. Tomas' now-departed team captain CJ Cansino. "Sometimes, good things fall apart so better things can come together," Renzo Subido said. "Hoping for the best for you." Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can come together. Hoping for the best for you @cjcansino in your new journey, alam ko mahal mo parin sobra ang UST. You may be donning the maroon jersey pero pusong tigre ka pa din ???????? — Renzo Subido (@RenzoSubido) August 21, 2020 Subido and Cansino were co-captains in the Growling Tigers' pleasant surprise of a Finals run last year. The scoring guard is now signed with NorthPort in the PBA while the do-it-all swingman had just announced his transfer to the University of the Philippines. Rhenz Abando could also only hope for the best for his good friend. "Good luck King Tiger. Thank you sa sacrifice mo para sa UST," he said. To the UST COMMUNITY, our KING TIGER may not be donning the yellow jersey anymore but I’m confident that our team will still be formidable next season. We still have a team worthy of a finals seat. Let’s cheer up guys! #GoUSTe — Renzo Subido (@RenzoSubido) August 21, 2020 Cansino was installed as skipper in just his sophomore season. Up until the very end of his time in black and gold, he was doing his duty as leader. For that, UST players themselves bear no ill will against their now ex-teammate. "No goodbyes, but see you on and off the court," Abando said. As for the Growling Tigers themselves, they remain upbeat about their chances for UAAP 83 - whenever that comes along. As Subido put it, "To the UST community, our King Tiger may not be donning the yellow jersey anymore, but I'm confident that our team will still be formidable next season." Good luck King Tiger. CJ Cansino chooses UP as his next school, Fighting Maroons as his new squad
For CJ Cansino, there was one and only one ending to this phrase: nowhere to go but? Cansino will be taking his talents to the University of the Philippines, and the Fighting Maroons have added yet another big-time weapon to their already overflowing arsenal. Last Thursday, the 6-foot-2 swingman decided to move on from University of Sto. Tomas, his alma mater of the last five years, due to personal reasons. The rejuvenated program wasted no time getting in touch, with head coach Bo Perasol and team management meeting with Cansino and his parents just hours after news broke. There, the family deeply rooted in Valenzuela was said to have been blown away by State U's pitch. UP painted a picture of Cansino alongside the likes of Gerry Abadiano, Joel Cagulangan, Malick Diouf, and Carl Tamayo once he becomes eligible for UAAP 84. There is also the possibility that Gomez de Liano brothers Javi and Juan will be making a return to the maroon and green by then. That was much too much to say no to and the 20-year-old will now join that ultra-talented lineup, serving his residency for the next year. Cansino was a homegrown product of UST, first standing as a key cog in the Tiger Cubs' return to relevance before staking claim to the Jrs. MVP in his last year in high school. The do-it-all guard wasted no time committing to the Growling Tigers and made an immediate impact as a candidate for the Rookie of the Year nod which ultimately went to Ateneo de Manila University's Ange Kouame. Last year, Cansino put up per game counts of 5.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.9 assists all while standing as team captain in their storybook run to the Finals. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
