Not a fan of Donald
With a parting shot at his former boss Donald Trump, General Mark Milley resigned as the top US military official on Friday. He said that no soldier had ever taken an oath to serve a “wannabe dictator.” On his final day as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Milley delivered a shocking reprimand that perfectly exemplified how the US military has been drawn into the increasingly combustible political landscape since the Trump administration. Milley did not specifically mention Trump during a lavish military ceremony for his leaving, but it was clear who he was criticizing. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and President Joe Biden were both present. Milley remarked of American soldiers “We don’t take an oath to a king, or queen, or a tyrant, or a dictator.” And we don’t swear an oath to a would-be autocrat. Air Force General Charles “CQ” Brown, the second African American to hold the position of chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will take Milley’s place. Milley, a barrel-chested army veteran with four decades of service, has held numerous high-level leadership positions and numerous foreign deployments. But he had his most difficult task when Trump gave him the career apex position of senior military advisor to the president in 2019. Milley oversaw the daunting withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, special operations in Syria, and a sizable program to support Ukraine in its valiant struggle against Russian invasion during a four-year term that will continue under Biden starting in 2021. Crisis after crisis Milley told AFP last month that during his tenure as chairman, “it was one crisis after another.” However, under Milley’s tenure at the head, the military became embroiled in an unusually high number of politicized incidents. Senior Republicans have regularly attacked what they allege are “woke” leftist practices inside the ranks, even as the Biden administration has pushed for measures such as renaming bases named after Confederate generals in the Civil War. And even that was not as dangerous as the delicate predicament Milley was in before and after the 2020 presidential election, when Trump, in a first-ever political nightmare for the United States, refused to concede loss. According to the book “Peril” by Bob Woodward, at the height of the crisis following the invasion of the US Capitol by Trump supporters on 6 January 2021, Milley discreetly called his Chinese counterpart to reassure Beijing that the US was “stable” and had no intention of attacking China. Furlough looms for 1.8M federal employees
United States federal agencies started notifying 1.8 million workers of their temporary furlough with the impending shutdown of the government due to a congressional impasse on the budget. Funding for much of the federal government will expire at midnight on Saturday but lawmakers are mired in perennial deadlock on a new funding bill. A small group of hardline Republicans are demanding deep spending cuts on the budget but Democrats disagree. The American Federation of Government Employees said federal workers would go unpaid for the duration that there is no legislated funding but their salary will be retroactively paid when the new budget law is passed. “If there is a shutdown in just a few days, our service members would be required to continue working but would be doing so without pay, and hundreds and thousands of their civilian colleagues would be furloughed,” Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said Thursday. The Treasury Department added that among other implications, “most core tax administration functions will stop” and more than half of the Internal Revenue Service staff will be furloughed. Anti-McCarthy protest Dozens of American teenagers occupied the office of the top Republican lawmaker on Thursday to protest against a looming government shutdown that they say will exacerbate the climate crisis. The Sunrise Movement, a nationwide youth environmental campaign, said around 30 of its members flooded inside House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s office while over a hundred more crowded the hallway outside. The group says 18 protesters were detained by police after refusing to disperse. McCarthy was not present during the protest at the Rayburn House Office Building, across the road from the US Capitol. The Sunrise Movement has voiced concerns over funding for emergency disaster relief and pro-climate provisions in Biden’s signature Inflation Reduction Act. “In my state, in Oregon, people are dying from wildfire smoke and extreme heat in the summers. People are dying in hurricanes across the country and climate disasters everywhere,” activist Adah Crandall, 17, from Portland, told Agence France-Presse. “The GOP has blood on its hands, and if it shuts down the government... and fails to continue providing the support that people need to literally stay alive, they should be ashamed of themselves,” she said. Zambales sets new capitol building construction
Iba, Zambales — The provincial government here is eyeing the construction of a P500-million capitol building that will replace the current establishment. According to Governor Hermogenes Ebdane Jr., the new Capitol building in this town is set to replace a structure that was reconstructed at least two times from a building built in the 1870’s by the Spanish Civil Government. Ebdane said that the new “modernized” building will have tech upgrades that will boost the provincial government’s capacity to provide better-quality public service and enable greater access to residents and customers. “We have to build a new seat of government that would be in keeping with the needs of the times and with our mandate to elevate public service to a new level,” Ebdane said. “If our physical facilities stay in antiquated condition, it would not be surprising if government services remain as outdated. That’s why we need to bring the Zambales Capitol up-to-date. Our people need and deserve this upgrade,” he added. The new building will be constructed at the People’s Park across the old capitol building, around four stories high, with basement parking and a total floor area of 15,475 square meters. The project would be funded out of a P2.6-billion borrowing from the LGU-Omnibus Term Loan Facility Program of the Land Bank of the Philippines to finance priority development projects of the province. The loan was approved by the Zambales provincial board in October last year through Resolution No. 2022-283. The existing Capitol building is a two-storey structure that was renovated in 1979 under the administration of then Gov. Vicente P. Magsaysay. It houses the administrative and financial offices of the provincial government. The legislative department had since moved into a new building completed in January 2021 under the Ebdane administration. The original building where the Capitol now stands was constructed by the Spanish Civil Government in 1875 to 1878. This was used as a provincial prison and later as the general headquarters of the Revolutionary Government of Zambales in 1899. Bong Go hails barangay health workers as community heroes
Senator Christopher "Bong" Go expressed his appreciation and support for the crucial role of barangay health workers (BHWs) in every community and reaffirmed his commitment to promoting their welfare, in a ceremony held on 11 August in Catbalogan City, Samar, In his address, Go acknowledged the vital contributions of BHWs, stating, "Sa panahon ng pandemya, kayo po ang ating mga bayani sa bawat komunidad. Sa inyong sakripisyo at walang kapagurang serbisyo, inalagaan ninyo ang ating mga kababayan. Salamat po sa inyong sakripisyo." The senator further recognized the relentless support BHWs have provided to all sectors of the community, from the elderly to children, especially in remote areas lacking medical professionals. "Nagpupugay ako sa inyong walang sawang pagtulong sa ating mga kababayan — matatanda man o bata — at sa inyong serbisyo sa mga malalayong lugar kung saan kapos sa mga doktor," he added. Emphasizing his dedication to the welfare of the BHWs, Go mentioned that he has filed Senate Bill No. 427, the Barangay Health Workers Compensation Act, to ensure proper compensation and benefits for community health workers. "Ang layunin ng batas na ito ay hindi lamang magbigay ng monthly honorarium na P3,000, kundi pati na rin ang mga allowances, privileges, Christmas bonus, annual training, at iba pa kung maisabatas ito," said the senator. He also mentioned previous efforts to provide Health Emergency Allowance for medical front liners during the pandemic, urging the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to revisit and release those who have not yet received it. "Nauna na nating isinulong na magkaroon kayo ng Health Emergency Allowance noong pandemya at patuloy pa rin ang panawagan ko sa DOH at DBM na balikan at bayaran ang mga hindi pa nakakatanggap nito," he declared. The event celebrated the oath-taking of 2,000 BHWs, a significant step for Samar's healthcare system. Go and his team then proceeded to assist the BHWs as they distributed food packs, vitamins, masks, and snacks. Select recipients also received shirts, a bicycle, a cellphone, a watch, and shoes, as well as balls for basketball and volleyball. The BHW Partylist, represented by Cong. Angelica Natasha Co, initiated a distribution of financial assistance to qualified BHWs through the Department of Social Welfare and Development's Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation program. Meanwhile, the provincial government of Samar led by Governor Sharee Ann Tan also provided blood pressure monitors for the BHWs. "Hindi ko po makakalimutan ang inyong ginawa sa panahon ng krisis, at hangad ko na pagtuunan pa ng pansin ang inyong kapakanan. Muli, maraming salamat sa inyong sakripisyo at dedikasyon. Mabuhay po kayong lahat!" he said. Go then reiterated the importance of investing in the health sector, especially in areas where access to healthcare is limited. This is why he likewise encouraged the residents to seek medical assistance from the Malasakit Center located at Samar Provincial Hospital in Catbalogan City, which he visited that day to aid patients and front liners. A brainchild of Go, the Malasakit Centers program was institutionalized under Republic Act No. 11463, which he principally authored and sponsored. The program helps ensure that particularly poor and indigent patients can more conveniently get medical assistance from the government. There are now 158 Malasakit Centers throughout the country, which have already served seven million Filipinos, according to the DOH. Go also sponsored the law mandating the establishment of the Samar Island Medical Center in Calbayog City. Go then acknowledged the efforts of local officials and agencies for their service to the people, including Governor Sharee Ann Tan, Cong. Angelica Natasha Co, and Major General Camilo Ligayo of the 8th Infantry Division, among others. In the past years, Go, who is Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, also extended his support to the rehabilitation of farm-to-market roads in Basey, Marabut, Talalora, and Tarangnan; construction of farm-to-market roads in Pinabacdao; construction of public market in San Jorge, Talalora and Tarangnan; construction of a multipurpose building in Catbalogan City; construction of evacuation centers in Sta. Margarita and Zumarraga; construction of a seawall in Sto. Niño; and acquisition of a dump truck in Jiabong to create more economic opportunities and help improve living conditions in the province. On the same day, Go also led the inauguration and ribbon-cutting of the Tandaya multipurpose hall in the provincial capitol compound which he was instrumental in ensuring funding for during the Duterte administration. He also attended the Tandaya Festival as the guest of honor. Lastly, he also inspected the construction of a building that will serve as a new city hall for Catbalogan which was funded through Go’s efforts. Other projects that Go supported were also inspected that day, particularly the construction of a new Sports Complex and the Lagundi-San Andres Access Road. Trump indicted in classified documents probe
Donald Trump said Thursday he has been indicted over his handling of classified documents after leaving office, the US ex-president's most serious legal threat yet as he pursues a second White House term. "The corrupt Biden Administration has informed my attorneys that I have been Indicted, seemingly over the Boxes Hoax," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform as he broke the bombshell news of a historic moment for the United States: the first time a sitting or former commander-in-chief has faced federal charges. There was no immediate confirmation from the Justice Department. Trump attorney Jim Trusty told CNN that his client has been indicted on seven charges including the willful retention of documents in violation of the Espionage Act, making false statements, obstruction of justice and a count of conspiracy. Though the precise details of the charges were not immediately clear, people familiar with the matter told The New York Times the conspiracy charge was related to obstruction of justice. In his post, Trump, who is running for president again, said he has been summoned to a federal courthouse in Miami next Tuesday -- the day before his 77th birthday. His announcement came a day after US media said federal prosecutors had informed his lawyers that he is the target of the probe into his handling of classified documents. Trump was already the first former or sitting president to be charged with a crime -- in his case over election-eve hush money payments to a porn star who said she had an affair with him. That indictment was handed down by Manhattan's district attorney in March. In a statement after his initial online posts, the Trump campaign lashed out at what it called an "unprecedented abuse of power," and called for the indictment to be thrown out. 'Dark day' In a defiant video released after he shared the news, Trump repeatedly declared his innocence and framed the indictment as a form of election interference by a Justice Department "weaponized" by the Biden administration. "They come after me because now we're leading in the polls again by a lot against Biden," Trump said in the clip. "Our country is going to hell and they come after Donald Trump... We can't let this continue." Fellow Republicans swiftly stood by him, including Speaker of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy, who has had a rollercoaster relationship with Trump. "Today is indeed a dark day for the United States of America. It is unconscionable for a President to indict the leading candidate opposing him," McCarthy said in a statement. "I, and every American who believes in the rule of law, stand with President Trump." Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a rival for the GOP presidential nomination, echoed Trump's claims of a "weaponized" DOJ, adding on Twitter that he would "excise political bias" if elected president. The Twitter account of Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee posted a repeated Trump slogan: "WITCH HUNT." Special counsel Jack Smith, named by US Attorney General Merrick Garland, has been looking into a cache of classified documents that Trump had stored at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida after leaving the White House. The FBI carted away some 11,000 papers after serving a search warrant on Mar-a-Lago in August, and obstruction-of-justice charges could be a result of his resisting efforts to recover the trove. Trump eventually turned over 15 boxes containing almost 200 classified documents to the National Archives in January 2022 but was subpoenaed for any outstanding records in his possession. When asked about the charges Thursday night, Smith's spokesman Peter Carr told AFP: "We are declining to comment." The White House said it learned of the indictment from media coverage and a spokesperson declined to comment on the news, noting that the DOJ "conducts its criminal investigations independently," CNN reported. Mounting legal woes Some Democratic lawmakers spoke out following Thursday's revelation. Trump's indictment "is another affirmation of the rule of law," House Democrat Adam Schiff said. "For four years, he acted like he was above the law," he added. "But he should be treated like any other lawbreaker. And today, he has been." Trump has repeatedly denied wrongdoing in the documents case, telling a Fox News town hall event on June 1 that "everything I did was right." But he has openly acknowledged taking and storing the documents, undermining his lawyers' suggestion that he took the stash inadvertently in the confusion of a chaotic departure. "This evidence just adds to the mound of stuff that already exists, and no one piece is the 'be all and end all,' but when you put them all together, the case is so strong," former Watergate prosecutor Jill Wine-Banks told MSNBC. "You cannot imagine his getting away with this." The latest indictment comes with Trump facing numerous other probes as he bids to be the Republican nominee to challenge Joe Biden for the presidency in 2024. Smith is also looking at whether Trump should face charges over the 2021 US Capitol riot, and Georgia prosecutors are investigating whether Trump illegally attempted to overturn the 2020 presidential election outcome there. Trump has already been charged with dozens of financial crimes as part of the alleged hush money scheme to silence the porn star, and is due to go on trial next March, in the middle of primary election season. Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco, along with some DOT officials, met with filmmakers and media executives in Los Angeles, California on 21 April (US time) to promote film tourism and share the current administration's drive to encourage international movie and television producers to consider the Philippines as their next film location. "Guided by our President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., we are determined to push for the country and for the Filipino story to be told, and also to pitch for the Philippines as a viable destination to tell stories from around the world," Frasco said during the meeting. The DOT chief also highlighted some of the country's advantages as a film location, such as the ease of doing business, ease of communications as English is widely read and spoken in the Philippines, wealth of talent in all production aspects, and certain incentives to film-related resources and services. Biden to sign executive orders on Day 1, amid high alert for inauguration
Joe Biden’s top aide said Saturday the incoming president would sign about a dozen executive orders on his first day in office, as police fearing violence from Trump supporters staged a nationwide security operation ahead of the inauguration. Authorities in Washington, where Wednesday’s inauguration will take place, said they arrested a man with a loaded handgun and more than 500 rounds of ammunition at a security checkpoint, underscoring the tension in the US capital which is resembling a war zone. However, the man’s family told US media he was a security guard, rejecting the idea he was intent on causing harm. Incoming Biden chief of staff Ron Klain said in a memo to new White House senior staff that the executive orders would address the pandemic, the ailing US economy, climate change and racial injustice in America. “All of these crises demand urgent action,” Klain said in the memo. “In his first ten days in office, President-elect Biden will take decisive action to address these four crises, prevent other urgent and irreversible harms, and restore America’s place in the world,” Klain added. As he inherits the White House from Donald Trump, Biden’s plate is overflowing with acute challenges. The US is fast approaching 400,000 dead from the Covid-19 crisis and logging well over a million new cases a week as the coronavirus spreads out of control. The economy is ailing, with 10 million fewer jobs available compared to the start of the pandemic. Biden this week unveiled plans to seek $1.9 trillion to revive the economy through new stimulus payments and other aid, and plans a blitz to accelerate America’s stumbling Covid vaccine rollout effort. On Inauguration Day Biden, as previously promised, will sign orders including ones for the US to rejoin the Paris climate accord and reverse Trump’s ban on entry of people from certain Muslim majority countries, Klain said. “President-elect Biden will take action — not just to reverse the gravest damages of the Trump administration — but also to start moving our country forward,” Klain said. – 500 rounds of ammunition – Meanwhile, Washington was under a state of high alert after a mob of President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6. The assault left five people dead, including a police officer. Security officials have warned that armed pro-Trump extremists, possibly carrying explosives, pose a threat to Washington as well as state capitals over the coming week. Thousands of National Guard troops have been deployed in Washington and streets have been blocked off downtown with concrete barriers. On Friday night, police arrested a Virginia man at a security checkpoint where he tried to use an “unauthorized” credential to access the restricted area where Biden will be inaugurated. As officers checked the credential against the authorized access list, one noticed decals on the back of Wesley Beeler’s pick-up truck that said “Assault Life,” with an image of a rifle, and another with the message: “If they come for your guns, give ’em your bullets first,” according to a document filed in Washington, DC Superior Court. Under questioning, Beeler told officers he had a Glock handgun in the vehicle. A search uncovered a loaded handgun, more than 500 rounds of ammunition, shotgun shells and a magazine for the gun, the court document said. Beeler was arrested on charges including possession of an unregistered firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. But Beeler’s father Paul told The New York Times his son had been working as a security guard on the Capitol grounds. Asked if the younger Beeler supported a peaceful transition of power, Paul Beeler told the newspaper, “That’s the reason he’s there.” In addition to the heavy security presence in Washington, law enforcement was out in force in state capitals around the country to ward off potential political violence. Mass protests that had been planned for the weekend did not materialize on Saturday, with security far outnumbering Trump supporters at several fortified statehouses, US media reported. In St Paul, Minnesota, for example, hundreds of law enforcement officers, some armed with long guns, ringed the Capitol with National Guard troops providing backup. The number of protesters totaled about 50......»»
