Beauty philosophy that surpasses time
Beauty, as it has evolved, goes beyond looks -- it discerns and does good. And for practicing such a philosophy, the Filipino brand Human Nature proves both timeliness and timelessness as it marks 15 years in the industry. Through a stylized gallery at Odd Cafe in Makati, the homegrown brand showcased its flagship beauty innovations, its newest limited-edition line and its recently launched breakthrough face care products. A new generation of influencers who embody the brand’s vision and are passionate about collaborating with authentic and purpose-driven brands graced the event. “Fifteen years ago, we started with a dream of introducing the promise of beauty that is kind to the skin, local communities and planet. Today, we are the pioneer local brand in the country to come up with a full range of natural and clean beauty and personal care innovations made by Filipinos for Filipinos. We are where we are today because of our fellow Filipinos who believe in us. So, in this milestone event, it’s you whom we celebrate!” Human Nature founder and president Anna Meloto-Wilk said. In celebration of its 15th-year milestone, Human Nature launched its thoughtfully made, limited edition design that embodies everything we believe in — the depth and diversity of the Filipina’s beauty that glows from within. Its design takes inspiration from the art style of Cubism, expressing women’s beauty in a multi-dimensional way through a play of elements. The brand also introduced its newest face care innovations for day-to-night natural glow. Start with the power hydrator Hyaluronic Acid Gel Day Moisturizer (P249.75) then give skin instant hydration on the go with the Hyaluronic Face Mist (P250). Lock in with Ceramide Skin-Renewing Night Cream (P299.75) moisture as you sleep and wake up with your dream skin. The Sunflower Beauty Oil with Bakuchiol (P299.75) will surely give that youthful glow from an expertly crafted concoction of new skincare superstar Bakuchiol. The well-loved Sunflower Beauty Oil is known to bring 25 beauty miracles. Get radiance beyond compare with Vitamin C + Hya Calamansi Radiance Serum (P495), which boasts of plant-based vitamin C and locally sourced calamansi. “Human Nature takes pride in crafting world-class local products that are all at least 95 percent natural, effective and free from harmful chemicals – allowing you to enjoy nurturing glow from head to toe. But there’s more to this glow than what meets the eye, just as how we believe that beauty is more than skin-deep,” Human Nature co-founder Camille Meloto-Rodriguez noted. Core advocacies Each product is expertly formulated by Filipino scientists and are 100 percent manufactured locally. Whenever possible, the brand uses locally grown ingredients no matter the cost to help homeland and local farmers thrive (Pro-Philippines). Going beyond profit, the brand dreams for the working poor to rise out of poverty and help create a new middle class. From day one, rank-and-file employees receive a living wage and stable employment through a no-firing policy. Putting people first is a sound business policy because not only does it increase productivity through trained and loyal employees, but it also creates a culture of empowerment and excellence (Pro-poor). The brand also takes care of the planet by creating natural, biodegradable product innovations that encourage users to #SwitchToGoodness for good. This commitment makes Human Nature the first brand in the Philippines with the widest range of plastic bottle-free formulations. As of September 2023, with the sustainability initiatives, Human Nature saved 37.2 tons of plastic waste from oceans and landfills. With every product, Human Nature seeks to advocate beauty that discards toxic trends; beauty that makes more meaningful, more compassionate and more sustainable choices; and beauty that inspires others to do the same. (Pro-environment). Human Nature stays committed to coming up with clean beauty innovations suitable for every Filipino’s needs. All in the hope of sustainably building a global company that will showcase the best of the Philippines and uplift people, especially the poor. As it moves forward, Human Nature will continue to advocate one goal: to be more than just beautiful, but kind. The post Beauty philosophy that surpasses time appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

‘Sinag’ and ‘Lupa’: Light that guides and land that nourishes
In late September 2019, the Cultural Center of the Philippines mounted the son et lumiere titled “Sinag: Festival of Radiance,” accompanied by a video projected on the façade of its iconic Brutalist Main Building, dancing fountain, performances and installations, as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of one of the Philippines’ revered cultural institutions. The light show was staged again in the following years with different themes even during the imposed lockdowns in the first years of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and 2021, serving as beacon of hope during one of the most challenging times for the arts and culture sector. The “Sinag” light-and-sound show continued to be mounted this year, fast becoming a tradition for CCP, as it commemorated its 54th founding anniversary and signaled the sector’s embarking on the road to recovery. It also recognized the sector’s perseverance and determination to continue creating and healing with its theme, “Tuloy Ang Palabas”(The Show Continues).” This year, the Main Building has remained dark and silent as it closed down in January for a three-year rehabilitation and renovation, but it came alive again from 28 September to 1 October for “Sinag 2023: Tuloy Ang Palabas.” A short video was projected on the façade, showing snippets of productions, projects and performances in the past nine months, all held in different venues outside the Main Building. The main part was a spectacle of colors and moving patterns, conceptualized by CCP light designers Camille Balistoy, Danilo Villanueva, Louie Alcoran and Shantie De Roca. This was accompanied by music by Soundridemusic and Makai-symphony, spliced by Jerry Tria. Capping the show was a video showing CCP’s reach in the country, through a map created by Reily Villaruz, as well as glimpses of performances and projects in the planning, accompanied by Jed Balsamo’s “Rurok.” As the CCP Main Building highlighted art’s role as light giver, the park beside it, CCP Liwasang KaLIKHAsan, is venue for an exhibit of installations depicting popular creatures of Philippine folklore. [caption id="attachment_191675" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Kapre. | PhotoGRAPHS by Roel Hoang Manipon FOR THE DAILY TRIBUNE[/caption] The kapre, aswang and tikbalang often figure in horror stories told to children, but acclaimed artist Abdulmari “Toym” de Leon Imao, son of the late National Artist for visual arts Abdulmari Asia Imao, regarded them as nature guardians, thus the title “Tanod-Lupa.” “Tanod-Lupa” was first mounted in celebration of Earth Day on 22 April, but was brought back for the anniversary celebration, and it seems fitting for the Halloween and Christmas seasons. Imao was inspired by stories about these creatures, many of which most likely can be traced from pre-colonial times, during his childhood. “My mom is Kapampangan, and they have wonderful stories of mythology such as Apo Mallari god of Mount Pinatubo. My dad came from the South. He was a Tausug. Mindanao is also rich in stories. The Sarimanok itself is a mythical creature. My appreciation comes from a fascination from childhood and growing up with these stories and narratives from my parents,” he said. “I am very fascinated with tikbalang. There are some stories that tell that it is actually a friend. The tikbalang also has a masculine appearance, very heroic,” he added. Working together with lantern makers from San Fernando City, Pampanga, headed by Arvin Bondoc Quiwa, and using materials such welded steel, fiberglass, ropes and lanterns with LED lights, Imao reimagined the creatures to be cartoonish but still retaining some scary and mysterious qualities. [caption id="attachment_191676" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Manananggal.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_191674" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Duwende.[/caption] The bright installations of kapre, duwende, manananggal, aswang, nuno sa punso and tikbalang are scattered around the park — under a balete, in between coconut trees, among overgrown weeds and unkempt bushes — and accompanied by eerie sounds designed by TJ Ramos. The most prominent among Imao’s works is his large installation in the shape of the panolong, a decorative detail of the traditional house of the Meranaw people, and the sarimanok, a popular design motif of several Moro ethnic groups, frequently used by his father in his works. [caption id="attachment_191677" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Nuno sa punso.[/caption] “Tanod-Lupa” is a work in progress, and more installations are being planned to be added to the collection. “With themes like climate change and cultural promotion, it’s perfect for us to bring these creatures from folklore and mythologies to the forefront. We are not the only inhabitants of our environment. We share it with other beings and creatures. Our ancestors remind us that we take good care of our environment lest these ‘tanod-lupa’ come out to remind us of our shortcomings,” Imao said. Barbie Forteza, David Licauco light up ‘Maging Sino Ka Man’
GMA’s hit stars Barbie Forteza and David Licauco of Maria Clara at Ibarra fame will bring back their sizzling chemistry to the television in Maging Sino Ka Man, the series adaptation of the ‘90s blockbuster hit of the same title and which catapulted Sharon Cuneta and Robin Padilla to new heights in their career back in the day. The highly anticipated romantic-action series will premiere 11 September and will run from Mondays to Fridays at 8 p.m. on GMA Telebabad and at 9:40 p.m. on GTV. It is directed by Enzo Williams (Ang Probinsyano). The Kapuso Primetime Princess and Pambansang Ginoo will play Monique and Carding, two very different people who fall in love with each other. It’s a rich girl-poor boy love story jampacked with action thrills and romance. The series also features Juancho Triviño as Gilbert Arnaiz, Faith Da Silva as Cleo Ramirez, Mikoy Morales (2023 Cinemalaya Best Actor) as Gordon a.k.a. Libag and Rain Matienzo as Tetay. Also part of the roster of its exciting cast are E.R. Ejercito as Boss Frank, Jeric Raval as Alex, Jean Saburit as Shonda, Juan Rodrigo as Miguel, Antonio Aquitania as Jonas, Jean Garcia as Belinda Salazar, Al Tantay as Osmundo and Tonton Gutierrez as George. At the most recent grand media conference, Williams described his experience directing the series as “not that hard.” “It’s not that challenging kasi ang galing nilang dalawa, to be honest. Working with Barbie, working with David — andiyan na ang chemistry nila eh, parang kaunting guidance na lang. So it’s not that hard,” he said. The director also expressed admiration for Forteza. “Barbie, I think she’s one of the best actresses I worked with.” This will definitely further amp the excitement among Forteza’s cult following as she will also play a male character in Maging Sino Ka Man. In the story, she also plays a dude named Dino as her disguise. For this, the actress studied Hilary Swank in Boys Don’t Cry, where Swank won an Oscar for her sensitive and complex role as a transman. This shows how serious Forteza is in her work for the series. Meanwhile, Licauco at the presscon admitted some challenges in his role as Carding, specifically the way the character talks as exemplified by Padilla in the hit movie: crass, crude and a thug. “As you know from the movie, mabilis magsalita si Carding. Matigas. As you can hear now, medyo mabagal talaga ako magsalita. I think iyon ang pinaka-challenging for me. But, of course, with the help of my director, I think…hopefully, nabigyan ko naman ng justice iyong character,” he replied to the question posted by a media member. Forteza also revealed that the series was created precisely for her and Licauco. “Personally, umeere pa lang Maria Clara at Ibarra, kumbaga napansin kami ng mga boss,” she said. “And they were already thinking of a follow-up project na para sa amin bilang artista. Sobrang fulfilling iyon, syempre. And kami (she and Licauco) naman po, in return, gagawin naman po ang best namin para mapaganda rin ang seryeng ito.” The creative team behind this 2023 remake of Maging Sino Ka Man is composed of creative director Aloy Adlawan; senior writers Benjamin Benson Logronio and John Kenneth de Leon; head writer Mark Duane Angos; brainstormer Louize Andrei Al-Shehri. Maging Sino Ka Man is made possible under the supervision of GMA senior vice president for Entertainment Group Lilybeth G. Rasonable; vice president for Drama Cheryl Ching-Sy; assistant vice president for Drama Helen Rose S. Sese; senior program manager Camille D. Hermoso; and executive producer Darling Pulido-Torres. WHO: Aspartame ‘possibly carcinogenic’
The World Health Organization is advising moderation in the consumption of food with aspartame as it classified the artificial sweetener as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” But Foodwatch, an independent, non-profit organization that exposes food-industry practices that are not in the interests of consumers, said the soft drinks sweetener “has no place in our food and drink” with that classification. Francesco Branca, the WHO’s nutrition and food safety director, also said Friday in a press briefing that it is not advising people to stop consuming products with aspartame and not advising the withdrawal of such products from the market. The WHO presented its findings of two reviews of available evidence on aspartame during the press briefing. Its International Agency for Research on Cancer carried out its first-ever evaluation of the carcinogenicity of aspartame at a meeting in Lyon, France, from 6 to 13 June. The International Sweeteners Association said that IARC’s inclusion of aspartame in the Group 2B classification reaffirmed its safety. Camille Dorioz, campaign manager at Foodwatch, disagrees. Branca offered a third option when choosing between a soft drink with added sugar and one with added sweeteners. He said consumers can drink water instead and to limit the consumption of sweetened products altogether.
