Another five-peat for Ateneo? Isaac Go thinks it’s possible

Before last Sunday, five years ago was the last time Ateneo de Manila University celebrated a championship. That 2012 title capped off a five-peat that saw the Blue Eagles running rougshod in the UAAP. That five-peat featured top-notch talent such as Ryan Buenafe, Kiefer Ravena, Eric Salamat, Greg Slaughter, and Chris Tiu. While this new cast of characters for Ateneo isn’t that renowned, or not yet at least, their belief that they can do great things remains. So much so that Isaac Go, one of the heroes of this most recent championship, believes they are not stopping here. “This band of brothers, we feel we accomplished something, but we want another one,” he told reporters before Ateneo’s bonfire inside campus on Saturday. He then continued, “This is the start of a new five-peat.” The statement drew chuckles from the media present, the Blue Eagles and Go himself. After all, these boys from Katipunan were never ones to make grand claims. Still, a second straight championship isn’t a farfetched idea for this Ateneo team. Aside from team captain Vince Tolentino, Nigerian big man Chibueze Ikeh, and reserve Kris Porter, they will remain mostly intact for a title defense. As for a five-peat? Well, Aaron Black, Nieto twins Matt and Mike, and Thirdy Ravena are only in their third year; Jolo Mendoza and Raffy Verano are only in their second year; and Troy Mallillin, Gian Mamuyac, and Tyler Tio are only in their first year. They also have 6-foot-10 Angelo Kouame, Filipino-Kiwi Patrick Maagdenberg, and former San Beda College Red Lion William Navarro waiting in the wings. And that’s not even including the “wealth of talent” from their high school in the likes of heady point guard SJ Belangel and versatile forwards Jason Credo and Dave Ildefonso, all set to graduate from the Juniors by next year, as well as 7-foot-1 teen Kai Sotto and court general Forthsky Padrigao, both members of Batang Gilas. While he isn’t guaranteeing anything just yet, coach Tab Baldwin said the Blue Eagles will just continue what they have been doing – better themselves each and every day. “We managed to climb the mountain, but when we look up, we see another peak,” he expressed —- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

Dominant Sarr a sight to see for Adamson fan Justin Brownlee

For the first time in quite a while, Justin Brownlee was at the Araneta Coliseum and he didn't have to drain multiple clutch shots to save Brgy. Ginebra from trouble. The two-time PBA champion with the Gin Kings was with his agent Sunday at the Big Dome, taking time to watch the UAAP Season 80 showdown between the Adamson Falcons and the UP Fighting Maroons. And just like in the pros, Brownlee walked away from the Big Dome with a win as the Falcons locked up the no. 3 seed by handing the Maroons a sound beating. You see, Brownlee is a fan of the Falcons. There is legit connection here but we'll let you, our readers, figure it out. "I'm actually a fan of Adamson and Papi," Brownlee said, talking about Franz Pumaren's crew and Papi Sarr in particular. With a crucial game at hand, Adamson played like a true Final Four team and Sarr didn't disappoint. The towering reinforcement was good for 25 points and 17 rebounds in the Falcons' statement victory. Brownlee was impressed, of course. "I like him [Papi] as a player. I think he's an incredible rebounder and when he gets the ball around the basket, you might as well say it's two points," the Ginebra import said. While it wasn't the first time Brownlee watched a Philippine collegiate game live, he still marveled at the incredible atmosphere the games have. "Comparing to the US, it's a lot similar. The college atmosphere, for me it's a lot of excitement especially with the band playing and the fans they get really into it," he said. "I'm familiar with it and it's exciting," Brownlee added.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Red Sox fire manager Farrell after 2nd straight ALDS defeat

em>By Kyle Hightower, Associated Press /em> BOSTON (AP) — John Farrell racked up a lot of wins and World Series title with the Boston Red Sox. But past success wasn't enough to save his job after consecutive early playoff exits. Boston fired Farrell on Wednesday after the team's second straight loss in the AL Division Series. The Red Sox announced the move less than 48 hours after they were eliminated from the World Series hunt with a 5-4 loss to the Houston Astros . Farrell's contract had been scheduled to run through the 2018 season. Boston won back-to-back American League East titles for the first time in franchise history this season despite losing the bat of retired slugger David Ortiz. It also did it despite starting the season with $217 million pitcher David Price on the disabled list and watching as 2016 Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello stumbled to an 11-17 record. 'I thought it was the appropriate time to make a change for the betterment of the organization,' president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said. Farrell managed the team to its eighth World Series title in 2013, his first season in charge of the club. Farrell went 432-378 over five seasons with Boston. He began his coaching career with the Red Sox as a pitching coach from 2007-2010. Farrell also was part of the team's 2007 World Series title. He began his major league managerial career with Toronto and went 154-170 over two seasons. 'Despite an end to this season that we all wanted to be different, I am proud of this ballclub and the resiliency shown,' Farrell said in a statement released by the Red Sox. 'I have enjoyed every moment of this job — its peaks and its valleys. There are few, if any, positions in life that create so much passion on a daily basis.' He also thanked the organization for its support 'through a challenging and scary period in my own life,' referring to when he was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2015. 'I remain forever indebted,' Farrell said. Dombrowski wouldn't go into specifics on his thought process, but said 'a lot of different factors' went into the decision to make the move. He said the team plans to move swiftly on its next hire and that the next manager would 'most likely not' be a member of Farrell's current coaching staff. Dombrowski said it would be important to be comfortable in front of media and relatable to the team's current young core. Farrell leaves with a win total that ranks sixth in club history and he is second in postseason appearances (three) behind Terry Francona (five). He is also the only manager in in club history to finish in first place in the division three times. Dombrowski said the baseline for success in Boston is different. 'I think you can weigh success in a lot of different ways and that's very successful. ... For me, the ultimate success is winning the world championship,' Dombrowski said. Farrell said after losing to the Astros that the team didn't meet its goals but had some good young players continue to develop. 'We had a number of challenges thrown our way from individual injuries to performance,' he said. 'But as a team they stuck together.' The offense slumped after Ortiz retired, even though the team had baseball's third-highest payroll. Several players also had health issues, including second baseman Dustin Pedroia and pitcher Drew Pomeranz. There also was an off-field incident in June when Price confronted Hall of Fame pitcher and current television analyst Dennis Eckersley on a team flight. Price was upset Eckersley didn't make himself available to the players after what they felt were critical comments about the team. Farrell later said the team had 'moved on' from the incident, but the way it lingered raised questions about his control of the clubhouse . Dombrowski reiterated that the organization was past that incident and said his personal relationship with Price is 'fine.' But Dombrowski conceded that being able to thrive as a manager under Boston's unrelenting spotlight is a must. He said he's talked to quality managers in the past that he respects that won't manage in Boston. It will make his search tougher, but he believes he can find the right person. 'You have to be prepared to take it,' Dombrowski said. 'This is a great baseball city. ...But there's a lot of scrutiny. ...I think it's for some people and it's not for others.' .....»»
