Over 2.7K alleged human trafficking victims rescued in Las Piñas POGO raid
The Philippine National Police on Tuesday said it rescued 2,714 workers of different nationalities, allegedly victims of human trafficking by the illegal Philippine offshore gaming operator in Las Piñas City. In its report, the National Capital Region Police Office said of the total rescued individuals, 1,528 were Filipinos, 600 Chinese, 183 Vietnamese, 137 Indonesians, 134 Malaysians, 81 Thais, and 21 Taiwanese, while the rest are foreign nationals from Nigeria, Singapore, Myanmar, Yemen, Pakistan, South Africa, India, Somalia, Sudan, Cameroon, and Iran. The alleged victims were rescued during the law enforcement operations of the NCRPO and PNP’s Anti Cybercrime Group at a POGO establishment located at 501 Alabang-Zapote Road, Barangay Almanza Uno, Las Piñas City. The owners and maintainers of the POGO hub registered as “Xinchuang Network Technology Inc.” formerly known as "Hong Tai", were identified through their aliases Quiha Lu, Liangfei Chen, Jimmy Lin, and Abbey Ng. They face criminal charges for violating the Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2012. Senator Win Gatchalian described the latest police raid in a POGO hub in Las Pinas as “another testament that POGOs’ involvement in criminal activities has become rampant, and necessitates their immediate expulsion from the country.” “Because we have allowed POGOs to maintain operations in the country, the Philippines has become a hotbed of human trafficking,” he told the reporters on Tuesday. Gatchalian lamented that POGO hubs, in effect, have been given a free license to engage in criminal activities. He also slammed the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation for “utter incompetence in supervising” the operations of POGOs. “Undoubtedly, the POGO industry poses a huge threat to the country’s peace and order situation, endangering both local and foreign nationals,” Gatchalian said. “Hindi na dapat madagdagan pa ang mga biktima ng POGO sa bansa. Paalisin na ang mga POGO sa lalong madaling panahon!” he added. The post Over 2.7K alleged human trafficking victims rescued in Las Piñas POGO raid appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
40 migrants feared drowned off Lampedusa
The United Nations said that about 40 people are missing after a boat full of migrants sank Thursday near the island of Lampedusa in Italy. IOM spokesperson Flavio di Giacomo said that 46 people from Cameroon, Burkina Faso, and Ivory Coast were on board the ship, which set sail from Sfax, Tunisia. The boat capsized in strong winds and high waves, he said. “Some survivors were taken to Lampedusa and others were brought back to Tunisia.” “Among those missing were seven women and a minor. The survivors are all adult men,” he added. “We have noticed more arrivals of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa than Tunisians” via the Tunisian route since November, he said. He explained this was due to people from sub-Saharan Africa fleeing discrimination in Tunisia. “It is unacceptable to continue counting the dead at the gates of Europe,” United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees representative to Italy Chiara Cardoletti wrote on Twitter. “A coordinated and shared rescue mechanism at sea between states is now also a matter of conscience.” The southern Italian island of Lampedusa is one of the main entry points for migrants crossing the Mediterranean. Last year, more than 46,000 people arrived there, out of a total of 105,000 in Italy, according to the UNHCR. Migrant boat shipwrecks have increased in recent months, while the number of migrants entering the EU via the central Mediterranean “more than doubled” in 2023 compared to the same period last year, according to the European border agency Frontex in mid-June. Last week, a crammed trawler from Libya sank off the Greek coast. The death toll stands at 82, with 104 survivors pulled from the water, but witness accounts suggest many hundreds more went down with the ship, with their remains still missing at sea.
