Without Ravena, Alas, Road Warriors fail to match KaTropa’s fire power

NLEX may just be one of the most unfortunate teams in the PBA Commissioner's Cup having to deal with the absence of its star backcourt in Kiefer Ravena and Kevin Alas. And that absence was felt in the Road Warriors' 117-106 loss to TNT Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena. NLEX head coach Yeng Guiao said they failed to match the firepower of the KaTropa, whose backcourt partnership of Jayson Castro and Terrence Romeo could easily exceed that of the Road Warriors' Alas and Ravena. "We really lack the firepower and when you play against a team with a lot of offensive firepower like TNT that's the time you really miss Kiefer and Kevin," said Guiao in Filipino. Guiao, despite his tea...Keep on reading: Without Ravena, Alas, Road Warriors fail to match KaTropa’s fire power.....»»

Ravena hopes Alas can play in do-or-die Game 6 for NLEX

ANTIPOLO --- Rookie Kiefer Ravena knows how big of a loss Kevin Alas was for NLEX in Game 5 of the 2018 PBA Philippine Cup semifinals against Magnolia. "That was big and it kind of messed up our rotation," Ravena said after his backcourt partner Alas suffered an apparent knee injury 40 seconds into the game on Sunday. Ravena even shared that Alas was the one who was encouraging the Road Warriors before the game to come together and start strong in an attempt to light a fire on the players. But Alas hurt his right knee and Ravena admitted that the absence of Alas took the air out of NLEX. "He was really motivating us before the game, reminding us to be sharp, and that happ...Keep on reading: Ravena hopes Alas can play in do-or-die Game 6 for NLEX.....»»

Victolero s challenge via text ignites Jalalon s competitive fire

Jio Jalalon wasn't exactly having a great semifinals against NLEX. He was averaging only 4.5 points per game entering Wednesday's Game 3, and he scored exactly zero points in the series opener. Despite his offensive struggles though, head coach Chito Victolero knows that his second-year point guard is one of the better ones in the PBA. And he made sure Jio knew about that. "Kagabi, ka-text ko yang si Jio," Victolero said. "Sabi ko na in order to establish himself sa PBA, he needs this series to get his confidence. Happy ako na nag-respond siya sa challenge ko," he added. Jalalon sure responded to his coach's challenge, scoring a game-high 25 points to hand Magnolia a 2-1 lead in the best-of-7 series. Now he hopes to sustain his effort all the way to a Finals appearance for the Hotshots. "Dun tumaas yung tingin ko sa sarili ko," Jalalon said of Victolero's challenge. "Pasalamat ako kay coach Chito na binigyan niya ako ng tiwala. Nagagawa ko na rin yung talent ko dito sa semis, sana magtuluy-tuloy pa to," he added.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

On-fire Alas proves he could be an outside threat

BOCAUE, Bulacan --- NLEX head coach Yeng Guiao was practically begging for Kevin Alas to shoot from the outside. So Kevin did do just that and he ended up with a new PBA career high. Alas led the Road Warriors' charge Sunday at the Philippine Arena here and NLEX completed a come-from-behind win over Blackwater to secure a place in the 2018 PBA Philippine Cup playoffs. Spiked by five triples, Alas finished with 25 points, 16 in the fourth quarter. He also had eight rebounds and five assists for good measure. "Good thing Kevin Alas saved the day for us. I've been getting on Kevin's outside shooting the last few games, I've been asking him to take outside shots," Guiao said. "I did not expect that it would pay dividends this early. But I've been telling him that he's just underusing his outside game. Today he showed us that he is an outside threat," he added. For Alas, it was about time for him to repay the trust his coach has been giving him. It also proves that coach Yeng's tough love actually works. "I played okay nung last game pero I ended up, napag-sabihan ako ni coach Yeng nung game na yun. I just wanted na suklian yung binibigay na trust ni coach Yeng," he said. "Matagal na. Pero sabi niya sa post-game namin kanina ‘kung di ko na naman papagalitan at mamumura to si Kevin di na magkaka-shooting to’ parang ganun so yun lang kailangan lang talaga suklian yung trust na binibigay sa akin ni coach Yeng," Alas added.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Ebuen catches fire in Arellano U s second straight win

Games Monday: (FilOil Flying V Centre, San Juan) 9:30 a.m. -- Letran vs. Mapua (jrs) 11 a.m. –- Letran vs. Mapua (w) 12:30 p.m. -- JRU vs. SSC-R (w) 2:00 p.m. -- JRU vs SSC-R (m)   Rookie Necole Ebuen waxed-hot as she led the repeat-seeking Arellano University to a 25-19, 25-12, 25-11, demolition of Emilio Aguinaldo College for the solo lead Sunday in the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. The opposite hitter, who joined the Lady Chiefs last year after spending three months in Letran's Team B, finished with game-high 15 points anchored on 11 attacks, two aces and a kill block. “As much as possible talagang pinipilit kong itimbang ang iginagalaw ng team. Ayaw ko kasing umaasa sa iisang tao lang,” said Arellano U coach Obet Javier, who parades an almost intact championship core. Jovielyn Prado scored 12 points with all but one coming off kills while Regine Arocha and Andrea Marzan combined for 12 markers for the Legarda-based squad, which stretched its winning streak to 14 straight since last season. Javier again sat out ace playmaker Rhea Ramirez (sore shoulder). Setter Sarah Verutiao, a transferee from University of Sto. Tomas, continued with her superb performance after tallying 32 excellent sets. The Lady Chiefs needed some time to heat up after a sluggish start in the opening set but were unstoppable in the next two frames as Arellano rained down 41 attack points and committing only 13 errors the whole match. EAC absorbed its second straight defeat in as many outings. Aira Binondo got eight points while Yvette Tongco finished with five for the Lady Generals.   --- Follow  this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»
