Hertha hands Bayern a 2-0 defeat on Niko Kovac s return

By CIARAN FAHEY,  Associated Press BERLIN (AP) — Hertha Berlin defeated Bayern Munich 2-0 in the Bundesliga on Friday, dealing its former player Niko Kovac his first loss as coach of the German champion. Kovac was part of Hertha's midfield with Pal Dardai - who is now Hertha's coach - from 2003 to 2006. Dardai outwitted him this time, as veteran forward Vedad Ibisevic and league top-scorer Ondrej Duda struck in the first half to hand Bayern its first defeat in all competitions this season. "We deserved to win," a beaming Dardai said after securing Hertha's first win over Bayern since 2009. "We scored nice goals at important times." It was also the second consecutive league game that Bayern dropped points, after Augsburg struck late to snatch a 1-1 draw on Tuesday. "We don't have to start making everything bad now," Kovac said defiantly. "We'll see that we're successful again in the next games." The win moved Hertha level on 13 points with Bayern, which leads on goal difference but can be overtaken after this weekend's games. The 34-year-old Ibisevic rewarded the home side's promising start when he converted a penalty in the 23rd minute. Defender Jerome Boateng - also back at his former club - conceded it by bringing down Salomon Kalou with a careless challenge, after Manuel Neuer made a brilliant save to deny Ibisevic's initial header. Bayern responded with more pressure. Joshua Kimmich did brilliantly to elude defender Karim Rekik with a flick, only for teammate Franck Ribery to block his goal-bound shot. Just before the break, Kalou played in Valentino Lazaro, who cut the ball back for Duda to rifle in under the bar. It was the Slovakia midfielder's fifth goal of the season......»»

Berrios pitches Twins past White Sox 2-1 in 1st game

By DAVE CAMPBELL,  AP Sports Writer MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins' pitching staff has finally caught up in the strikeout era, with Jose Berrios leading the way. Berrios became the first Minnesota pitcher in eight years to reach 200 strikeouts, throwing seven smooth innings for the Twins in a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Friday in the first game of a day-night doubleheader. "It means a lot, obviously. That was one of my goals before the season started," Berrios said. "That's when I wrote it down, and I accomplished it and I'm thankful to God for that." Berrios finished his All-Star season with a career-best 3.84 ERA and 202 strikeouts. The last time a Twins pitcher topped that milestone was Francisco Liriano (201) in 2010, with Johan Santana (235) in 2007 the most recent prior to that. The Twins are 16th in the major leagues in strikeouts, after finishing next-to-last in 2017. From 2011 through 2015, they were last. Berrios (12-11) struck out nine batters, allowing just three hits and one run on Leury Garcia's RBI single in the third. Berrios walked four, including Avisail Garcia to lead off the sixth, but he followed that by fanning Daniel Palka, Matt Davidson and Omar Narvarez in a 10-pitch span to finish the inning with his fastball buzzing. "Pretty special kid," White Sox manager Rick Renteria said. "Nice mix of pitches. Breaking ball was diving, sinking. He's got a quick arm. Just kept us off balance." Though Berrios had a 4.15 ERA and just a 3-4 record in 12 starts after the All-Star break, the right-hander took another step toward being the ace at the top of the rotation the Twins have been lacking since Santana was traded 11 years ago. "I want to be one of the best pitchers in the league," Berrios said. "I think I have the material to do that and to be the best pitcher on this team, so that Minnesota can construct around me and build a winning team." Reynaldo Lopez (7-10) turned in another strong start for the White Sox, with the exception of matching his season high with five walks. The righty struck out five in six innings with four hits and two runs allowed. Tyler Austin's RBI groundout in the first and Willians Astudillo's sacrifice fly in the sixth were all the Twins needed. After four outs by Taylor Rogers, Trevor May struck out the last to batters to notch his second save and end the game that was a makeup from the mid-April weekend when the White Sox and Twins had three straight games postponed by a snowstorm. Paid attendance was still announced at 20,245, with a first-pitch temperature of 51 degrees. Joe Mauer, playing possibly the final games of his career with an expiring contract and a pending decision about whether or not to retire at age 35, had two singles and is hitting .352 (19 for 54) over his last 14 starts while reaching base at least once in each. Astudillo has 16 RBIs in his last 15 games for the Twins, who improved to 46-32 at home. They're 27-12 since June 24, the fifth-best record in MLB in that span. WHIFFING WHITIES The White Sox struck out 12 times, raising their season total to an MLB-most 1,563. That's also only eight less than the all-time record of 1,571, set last year by the Milwaukee Brewers. Yoan Moncada has the team lead with 214, followed by Davidson with 161. FINISHING STRONG Lopez logged 40 innings over his last six starts, with a sparkling 1.13 ERA and 41 strikeouts. The 24-year-old finished with a 3.91 ERA in 188 2/3 innings. "I'm leaving this season in a much better way than how I entered the season," Lopez said through a team interpreter. "I learned a lot." GIVING BACK The last time the White Sox played in Minnesota, on Aug. 20 , manager Rick Renteria experienced light-headedness in the afternoon and was hospitalized overnight as a precaution. He wound up missing four games. As a thank-you to the staff at Hennepin County Medical Center for his care, Renteria sent popcorn and donated 200 tickets to children being treated at the facility. UP NEXT White Sox: RHP Lucas Giolito (10-12, 5.81 ERA) takes the mound in the nightcap. Twins: RHP Chase DeJong (0-1, 3.86 ERA) starts the second game......»»

PBA: Asian Games break not a factor in loss, says Rain or Shine s Caloy Garcia

Two games into the 2018 PBA Governor's Cup, the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters find themselves 0-2 in their first two games after a 92-76 loss to the Magnolia Hotshots, Wednesday evening at the Araneta Coliseum.  While all the other teams in the league already found their groove with at least four games each, the Elasto Painters had an extended break that carried over until after the Asian Games, with six of their players being called up to represent the Philippines in the month-long Asian tournament.  The ElastoPainters made their debut last Sunday with a loss to Talk N' Text.  While it would be easy to say that the Asian Games could be a reason for Rain or Shine's rocky start, head coach Caloy Garcia doesn't see it that way.  "Wala," Garcia replied when asked if there was an Asian Games hangover of sorts, "Like I said, after the Talk N’ Text game, I feel that we played well against Talk N’ Text despite the loss."  Garcia continued by saying that this was a very different team that challenged the KaTropa.  "But in today’s game, it’s a totally different team, hindi ganun ang laro namin, even in practice, I think our preparation was good, but I think we just have to learn how to play against the pressure ng defense ng kalaban because we couldn’t excute anything today. [Magnolia] did a good job. They did the better job on defense." "We just have to find ways to win." he added.  In fact, Garcia stands by the belief that his six Asiad representatives should even be stepping up more, given the fact that they saw action against some of the best basketball squads in Asia.  "Dapat nga pagbalik nila galing Asian Games, they should be performing better, better than how they’re playing right now." Looking forward, Garcia relishes the fact they they'll be having a free day on Friday to be able to fine tune the things that need to be addressed in practice.  The next assignment for Rain or Shine will be against Alaska, and Garcia knows that they'll be in for another tough night.  "It’s good that we don’t have a game on Friday, at least we have more time prepare, especially since we play against Alaska," he explained, "and we know that Alaska will pressure us the same way that Magnolia pressured us today. I think we just have to prepare for that." The rest of the season doesn't get any easier for Garcia and the ElastoPainters, but Garcia maintains that all they need to do is focusing on what they need to do to get the win.  "Okay lang ‘yun. Makakalaban mo din sila sooner or later so, I think it’s just about us coming into the game and focusing ourselves on what we have to do to win.".....»»

NU has all the pieces, but can they put them all together?

HOW’D THEY DO LAST SEASON? 5-9, sixth YES, THEY’RE STILL HERE: Issa Gaye, Enzo Joson, Jonas Tibayan, Dave Wilson Yu WELCOME TO THE FAMILY: John Lloyd Clemente, John Galinato, Dave Ildefonso, Shaun Ildefonso, JV Gallego (returning), Joshua Sinclair (returning) GOOD LUCK ON FUTURE ENDEAVORS: J-Jay Alejandro, Jordan Bartlett, Matt Salem, Chino Mosqueda (injured) WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT FROM NU? National University is not messing around as it tries to put an end to its three-year playoff drought. Even though they lost longtime starters J-Jay Alejandro and Matt Salem, the Bulldogs are all set to welcome blue-chip recruits in the form of Ildefonso brothers Shaun and Dave, John Lloyd Clemente, and John Galinato. “Right now, we’re excited that we got a very talented team, but it’s a very young team.” – head coach Jamike Jarin We named NU the 2018 king of recruiting because of that – and so, nothing less than immediate impact is expected from the Ildefonsos, JLC, and Galinato. “Of course, it’s make or break for everybody – for the entire school, for the entire team.” – head coach Jamike Jarin If all goes well, the new blood will fully fill in the holes beside Senegalese tower Issa Gaye, second-year playmaker Enzo Joson, and stalwart Dave Wilson Yu. More than the rookies, however, head coach Jamike Jarin wants and needs all his holdovers to take another step forward for the Bulldogs to live up to the hype. “We’re so young and the experience that we have is not enough. It has to be a combined effort to make us competitive.” – head coach Jamike Jarin WHO IS/ARE THE PLAYER/S TO WATCH OUT FOR FROM NU? Gaye has a chance to claim the vacant spot of best foreign student-athlete – only if the tall and long-limbed Senegalese tower plays up to his potential. At the wings, NU is brimming with talent in veteran DWY, returning JV Gallego and Joshua Sinclair, and first-year players Shaun and Dave Ildefonso, JLC, and Galinato. “JLC, Dave Ildefonso, Josh Sinclair, those are the guys that you will see in the long run.” – head coach Jamike Jarin The issue that persists, however, is at point guard – as it always has been since Gelo Alolino left. Rev Diputado is as steady as they come and Joson can turn into a problem for opponents as a big guard, but both of them have no time to waste and have to become masterful generals for all the weapons the Bulldogs have. WHY SHOULD WE ROOT FOR NU? NU is, hands down, the 2018 king of recruiting. That means that most of the top talent from this year’s recruitment class will be donning blue and gold. The youth movement is well underway and, coupling that with head coach Jamike Jarin’s uptempo attack, there is no doubt that the Bulldogs will be nothing but fun to watch. Get ready for a lot of running and gunning when the NU Bulldogs will be let out. WHERE WOULD NU BE AT THE END OF UAAP SEASON 81? NU will be fighting for a playoff berth – make no mistake about it. “We’re gonna play with a lot of heart. We’re gonna give a scare to the entire UAAP.” – head coach Jamike Jarin Unlike the likes of favored Ateneo, intact Adamson and FEU, reloaded La Salle, and primed UP, all of whom we know what we’re going to get, we’re still not sure how the Bulldogs look like when they finally play together in the UAAP. When the veterans and the new blood perfectly co-exist, then look out for the Bulldogs. Otherwise, however, add one more year to that playoff drought. WHEN IS NU’S FIRST GAME IN UAAP SEASON 81? NU trots out its stacked lineup up against rebuilding UST and coach Jamike will be matched up once more opposite coach Aldin Ayo on September 7. Of course, It All Begins Here on S+A, S+A HD, LIGA, LIGA HD, and livestream. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

Young actress Julia Barretto is open to doing more "intimate scenes" onscreen with love team partner and real-life boyfriend Joshua Garcia. She was quick to say, however, that "intimate" doesn't mean doing bed scenes. "I'm OK with kissing scenes if they're for a film, pero sobra naman 'yung bed scenes!" she told reporters during a recent gathering for their first small-screen project, "Ngayon at Kailanman," which started airing last Monday on ABS-CBN. Brandt Snedeker wins Wyndham Championship by 3 strokes

By Joe McCreary, Associated Press GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Brandt Snedeker began the Wyndham Championship with history — and ended it with a victory. Snedeker earned his ninth PGA Tour title Sunday, three days after opening with an 11-under 59. He closed with a 65 for a three-stroke victory in the regular-season finale, breaking a tie with C.T. Pan on the final hole with a birdie and Pan's double bogey in the group ahead. Snedeker finished at 21-under 259 for his first win since 2016 and his second at the tournament, but first at Sedgefield Country Club, to close what he called "the most stressful week I've ever had in professional golf." "Shooting 59 on Thursday, your expectations go through the roof," Snedeker said, also expressing pride that he could "cap it off the way we did today, to play pretty much a flawless round of golf." Pan shot a 66 to tie for second with Webb Simpson. Simpson matched his career-best with a 62. "I feel like it was a round I needed to make a push to the leaderboard," Simpson said. "Brandt's obviously had a great week ... so I knew it was going to take something super low." Snedeker opened the tournament with the 59 that made him the first tour player this year and just the 10th ever to break 60, then on the final day played 29 holes at 5 under to seal it. He's the fifth tour player to shoot in the 50s and then win the tournament. He was never in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time in his career, but the victory gave him a huge jump on the points list. He climbed 50 spots to No. 30 on the list, after arriving at 80th — which would have been his lowest finish. "To be perfectly frank, I didn't have any chance at all" to win the FedEx Cup before this week, the 2012 playoff champion said. "After this week, I feel like I have a chance." For a while, it looked like it might come down to a playoff between Pan and Snedeker, who were even at 20 under entering Pan's final hole. But the 26-year-old from Taiwan ran into big trouble: Pan shanked his tee shot out of bounds off a cart path down the right side of the fairway and needed four shots, including the penalty stroke, to reach the green on the par 4. Pan said he heard "a couple noises in my head which caused me to hit a bad shot. "It's my fault. I can learn something from it," he said. "I only played one bad hole, which is fine. You know, I've still got a lot of golf left." With the victory seemingly inevitable at that point, Snedeker sank a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th to end it, making him the 10th player to win in Greensboro multiple times. His victory here in 2007 was the first of his career, and this time he finished one stroke shy of Henrik Stenson's year-old tournament record. "Wanting so desperately to win this tournament, it was just a lot of emotion this week," he said. Severe weather led organizers to suspend the third round with 30 players still on the course and bring everybody back to Sedgefield on Sunday morning, leaving Snedeker with 29 holes to play on the final day. He wrapped up that round with a one-stroke lead at 16 under before heading back onto the course. Since the tournament moved here in 2008, every third-round leader who was that far under par has gone on to win. The other subplot at Sedgefield is the last-minute push for the playoffs, which begin next week at The Northern Trust in New Jersey with the top 125 players qualifying. With every player who was between Nos. 122-127 missing the cut, there figured to be plenty of movement near the bubble. Sergio Garcia will miss the playoffs for the first time in his career after winding up 131st on the points list. Harris English and Nick Taylor played their way in, with Taylor saying he would "kind of soak it in and realize that we've finally done it. "It's really satisfying to finish it off," he said......»»

NCAA: Light Bombers take down Jr. Altas; LSGH still first

STANDINGS LSGH 6-1 MAPUA 5-2 ARELLANO 4-2 PERPETUAL 4-2 SAN BEDA 3-2 JRU 4-3 SAN SEBASTIAN 3-5 LPU 2-5 LETRAN 1-5 EAC 1-6 Jose Rizal High School is streaking for the first time in the NCAA 94 Men’s Basketball Tournament – and with that, has sent a statement about its contention. Following the lead of breakout player John Amores, the Light Bombers clobbered University of Perpetual Help in the earlygoing before holding on for a well-earned 84-72 win on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre. Amores tallied 18 points, seven rebounds, and three assists to show the Kalentong-based ballers the way to back-to-back wins – their first in the tournament. Now on a win run, JRU is just right behind powerhouses College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills, Mapua High School, Arellano High School, and San Beda High School in the standings. However, it was Marwin Dionisio who actually got the Light Bombers to a strong start by dropping all but two of his 10 points in the first quarter. He also totalled 12 rebounds just for good measure. Of course, the Junior Altas kept coming, but Amores and Gab Baluyut just did enough to keep them at bay. With the upset loss, Perps dropped to a  tie for third at 4-2. Main man Joshua Gallano struggled with just four points and three rebounds. Meanwhile, CSB-LSGH retained its top spot in the standings by dropping a 32-point hammer on Emilio Aguinaldo College, 103-71. Inand Fornilos turned in his best game of the season with a 26-point, 14-rebound double-double while Joshua David and RC Calimag each chipped in 12 markers for the now 6-1 Junior Blazers. Joel Cagulangan was relatively quiet once more, but was still felt everywhere with his 10 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and three steals.
