The importance of cyber security
Cyberattacks are on the rise! In the past, we associated this terrifying incident with online banks and payment platforms. However, even government websites, not known as financial institutions, from which money may be stolen, or unauthorized payments are also targets. Last Sunday, 15 October, the website of the House of Representatives was vandalized before noon by a group calling itself “3MUSKETEERZ.” A face with a mocking meme with the phrases “You’ve been hacked” and “Have a nice day” appeared on the website. Below the face was the message, “Happy April Fullz Kahit October palang (even if it’s still)! Fix your website.” A few minutes later, the website went down and became inaccessible. Shortly after, the House of Representatives issued a statement assuring the public that the House had already taken action and coordinated with the government agencies concerned to deal with the matter. “While we work to restore the website fully, we ask for patience and understanding. We are committed to ensure the security and integrity of our digital platforms, and we will implement additional measures to prevent such incidents in the future,” the statement said. Relatedly, also recall that on 22 September, a system of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation was similarly attacked, preventing access for a week. Reports stated the data breach affected employees’ workstations, application servers, and users’ data, including names, addresses, dates of birth, gender, phone numbers and PhilHealth identification numbers. On 31 August, the Department of Science and Technology’s OneExpert portal was also subjected to a cyberattack. In a statement on 13 October, the DoST assured the general public that the virtual assault compromised no personal data. In all the above instances, whether personal data or sensitive information were stolen, it causes alarm to us Filipinos. The call to government agencies and ordinary Filipinos to be vigilant and careful with our online information and accounts has become louder than ever. The same holds true for institutions and businesses, which, by the nature of their activities, are entrusted with and tasked to safeguard large amounts of personal information and are responsible for keeping this trust by whatever means appropriate. I now want to stress the importance of cyber security not just for individuals and juridical entities but for the entire nation holistically. Protection against cyber threats: In today’s digital age, cyber threats like hacking, data breaches, and identity theft are becoming more prevalent. Implementing robust cyber security measures helps protect us from these threats. Safeguarding sensitive information: Cyber security also helps protect sensitive information such as personal data, financial details and intellectual property. This is crucial for maintaining privacy and preventing unauthorized access or misuse of information. Maintaining trust, reputation, and credibility: Cyber security is essential for building trust with customers, clients, and partners. Organizations can maintain a positive reputation and avoid potential legal and financial consequences by committing to protecting their data and privacy. Compliance with regulations: Many industries have specific regulations and standards regarding data protection and privacy. Compliance with these regulations is not only important for avoiding penalties but also for ensuring ethical practices and responsible handling of data. Business continuity: Cyber attacks can disrupt operations, leading to financial losses, reputational damage, and even business closure. Implementing effective cyber security measures helps minimize these risks and ensures business continuity. Finally, I want to end by being deliberately redundant in stating that cyber security is crucial for protecting individuals, organizations, and society from the growing threat landscape in the digital world. Cyber attackers are on the prowl; we must be alert to the possibility of attack, ready even now to implement measures to effectively counter-act or prevent the same. Tanduay optimistic about entry into competitive Taiwan rum market
Tanduay has a positive outlook about its entry into Taiwan amid stiff competition from other rum brands. “Based on early reviews, we think that the brand will perform well since the Taiwanese market already has a sophisticated taste and is very accepting of brands that offer them something new and unique,” said Marc Ngo, Tanduay International Business Development manager and senior brand manager. He compared the Taiwanese rum market to that of Singapore where people are willing to spend on quality spirits and cocktails. In entering Taiwan, Tanduay partnered with the distributor, Mr. Mixer, Ltd., one of the leading spirits and other liquor distributors in the country. “They believe in the brands and they share our passion for bringing our world-class rums to the Taiwan market,” Ngo said. Mr. Mixer, Ltd recently held a grand launch of Tanduay at Driftwood Bar in Ximending District and invited Taiwan’s premier mixologists Mars Chang and the members of “To Infinity and Beyond Team”, the 2021 World Class competition Taiwan champions, to showcase their outstanding mixology skills as they infused Tanduay rums into unique signature cocktails. Seven world-class rums Tanduay is making its award-winning and best-selling rums available in Taiwan. These include the Tanduay Asian Rum Gold, Tanduay Asian Rum Silver, Tanduay Double Rum, Boracay Rum Coconut, Boracay Rum Cappuccino, Tanduay Dark and Tanduay White. Ngo said they are currently focused on opening and partnering with on-trade accounts to feature their brands and for consumers to try. “At the same time, we are having discussions with big chain accounts for them to carry Tanduay rums in their stores. We are also planning to join the Tainan Cocktail Event on 20-21 October to feature our brands more to local consumers,” he said. The brand’s international business has been on a steady growth trajectory in recent years. Taiwan is the 19th country where Tanduay rums are being sold. In Asia, it is already available in China, Singapore, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. In Europe it is being distributed in France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom, Austria, Poland, Georgia, Armenia and the Czech Republic. It is also available in the United States and Canada in Northern America and Costa Rica in Central America. Apart from its increasing global footprint, Tanduay has received numerous accolades from international competitions, such as the World’s Number 1 Rum recognition from Drinks International Magazine for six consecutive years, and Brand of the Year from the World Branding Awards. Not one to rest on its laurels, Tanduay is eyeing further international expansion in the coming months. NEDA supports permanent ban on POGOs
The National Economic and Development Authority has expressed its support for a permanent ban on Philippine offshore gaming operators in the country, citing the high social cost of these businesses. During the Malacañang Press Briefing on Thursday, NEDA Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said that the cost of POGOs to society, including the alleged crimes and related issues associated with them, outweigh the benefits they bring in terms of revenue and economic impact. "We don't think that the benefits in terms of the revenues generated and the additional --- and the impact and the economy are worth the cost," Balisacan said. He added that NEDA is encouraging "very legitimate investments, good investments, quality investments and those investments that will produce goods and services and not ones that promote negative externalities to society." Balisacan also said that NEDA is not marketing the Philippines as a destination for POGO businesses. "We have been moving around in many countries, cities attracting investments to the country, marketing our country as a good place to do business. We are not going around to attract business of this kind," Balisacan said. Balisacan expressed optimism that new investments can replace the revenue lost from the closure of POGOs. "Yeah, I think we do. Look at Thailand. Look at Indonesia. All these other countries around us don't depend on those kinds of businesses," he said. Balisacan clarified that his position on POGOs is not necessarily that of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., but that it is NEDA's. "No, this is our position that we expressed (that)," he said. He added that he would personally recommend to the President to ban POGO in their next NEDA Board meeting soon. Earlier this week, ten Senators called for the total closure of POGOs within three months due to a lack of economic contribution. A 120-page report on Tuesday mentioned that the Philippine economy will continue to thrive even without POGOs. The Senate Committee on Ways and Means obtained approximately ten signatures, achieving a majority, and Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, a prominent critic of POGOs, led the endorsement of the report. “The impact (of POGOs) on our economy is not that big if they leave. We have seen that they contribute less than 1 percent (of our gross domestic product),” Gatchalian said. The post NEDA supports permanent ban on POGOs appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Sherwin Lucas glides with Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod
Like a graceful swan on a lake, general manager Sherwin Lucas determinedly steered Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod through some rough waters during the health crisis, which the public seemed to not have noticed just how difficult he tirelessly paddled underwater. He initially targeted a college double major in Business and Accounting. However, with the closure of the American bases where his dad was gainfully employed, a reversal of fortunes occurred. When it was finally time to continue his studies, he graduated with a degree in Commerce instead. [caption id="attachment_175659" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Art Cove[/caption] Fresh out of university, he initially applied as a Cost Controller, but was quickly referred to the Front Office. Little did he know this would kickstart his career in the hospitality industry. He soon became the supervisor and the events head for Discovery Suites. He then accepted the challenge to become the resident manager of the Discovery Country Suites in Tagaytay. A firm believer in continuous education, he trained at the Asian Institute of Management and at the prestigious Professional Development Program in Cornell Nanyang in Singapore. He also possesses hands-on experiences in Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai. [gallery columns="2" size="full" ids="175660,175661"] While on a holiday in Hong Kong, he chanced upon an interview opportunity for The Venetian Macao Resort-Hotel as the assistant events manager. Strange as it may seem, this began his back-and-forth stints between properties in Manila and Macau — as he methodically climbed the ranks, as the director of operations, events manager and director of events. When the global pandemic brought the world to a standstill, he grabbed the opportunity to be the general manager of Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod and has settled with his wandering pair of shoes ever since. Established in 2021, the property boasts 150 rooms and suites, all located within the accessible SM City Bacolod Complex. Guests look forward to amenities, such as the pool deck, in-room spa services, fitness center, a jogging path, and even an art cove, where one may acquire featured pieces from local artists. [gallery size="full" ids="175662,175663,175664"] Culinary-wise, executive sous chef Billy Jo Andaca offers the all-day international dining at Arima, a grab-and-go counter of DASH, the chill Lobby Lounge and the popular pool bar Marapara al Fresco. Should Lucas not have been a hotelier, he would have pursued a career in education or medicine. In his free time, in addition to reading spy, crime and mystery novels, he looks forward to this private time in the kitchen. He likewise lets out stress by driving while listening to music. [gallery columns="2" size="full" ids="175665,175666"] We recently had a brief chat with Lucas, where he shared some interesting tidbits on himself and the Park Inn. Career highlights As a resident manager, there was not a same single day in the perplexing world of hotel operations. I recall I handled my biggest-ever event — with 15,000 delegates in attendance — as the director of events. Finally, I’m so glad and fulfilled when I was appointed as the general manager of Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod. Management style I believe in engaging the team by having a clear and relatable ‘reason for being’. We stand by four tenets: our guests, the owning company, our team and the community-at-large. All these factors affect each other, but may sometimes be seemingly conflicting in interests. All our decisions — may it be big or small — always consider the effects on these four pillars. I stand by guided empowerment — teach and mentor not just the officers, but also individual staff members to enable them to make informed decisions. We also need to provide safety nets that allow them to learn without major harm to the organization. Important ingredients to be a property of choice It’s definitely an empowered and engaged team. We also need to continue to fine-tune and self-improve our systems and processes as the need arises. Location is of utmost importance. Marketing preference Social media has a wider reach — with almost limitless creativity and possibilities! Dream post I am living my dream post — it allows me to explore my talents to form, to lead and to nurture the team. Sometime in the future, I would wish to mold promising hospitality leaders. Close business, gov’t collab spur growth — Pascual
Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual is urging private entities to continuously work with the government in addressing issues crucial to economic recovery and growth. At the 3rd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Business Advisory Council meeting in Cebu City last Friday, Pascual said the partnership between the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and the APEC Business Advisory Council is actually regarded by the Philippine government as a cornerstone of its vision for the country’s future. “It exemplifies the power of synergy — when government and business come together and connect, we lay the groundwork for a trade environment that is not just functional, but inclusive, resilient, and sustainable. This dynamic collaboration enables us to stay agile and responsive as we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of business and technology,” he said in a speech. In line with this year’s theme, “Equity, Sustainability, Opportunity,” ABAC Philippines focused on helping communities build back stronger through collective efforts. With critical goals to pursue, Secretary Pascual called for stronger partnership and collaboration among APEC Member Economies in crafting policy reforms that would spur economic growth. Areas of focus For this year’s work program, the ABAC will initially have these areas of focus: (1) Economic Integration Working Group; (2) Sustainable Growth Working Group; (3) Digital and Innovation Working Group; (4) Finance Task Force; and (5) Inclusion Task Force. Secretary Pascual has also commended the efforts of ABAC in shaping a strong, credible, and relevant World Trade Organization even as he recognized ABAC’s strong push toward the eventual realization of the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific. “The Philippines views the FTAAP as a mechanism to boost economic recovery in the region, especially for medium, small and micro-enterprises most affected by the pandemic. We thus support the immediate implementation of the FTAAP Agenda Work Plan which contributes to APEC’s sustainability and inclusion objectives,” he said. ABAC Philippines is currently focused on several initiatives including the promotion of the availability and accessibility of climate risk scenario information, the exploration of the viability of nuclear energy as a zero-carbon energy source, and other use cases under the Sustainable Growth Working Group. Further, it is working on enhancing cross-border data flow in financial services. For its part, the DTI is prioritizing (1) APEC’s Support for the Safe Passage of Maritime Crew in the Covid-19 Era, (2) Boracay Action Agenda to Globalize MSMEs, and (3) APEC Trade Repository. Aligned with this year’s ABAC meeting theme, the DTI aims to provide equal opportunities for all, promote regulations for environmental stewardship, and commit to fostering a digitally inclusive APEC community. No more business, socials as Afghan women’s salons close
Afghan women lose their remaining place for gathering, socializing and business on Tuesday with the closure of all beauty salons nationwide on the order of Taliban authorities. “We used to come here to spend time talking about our future together. Now even this right has been taken away from us,” Bahara, a customer at a Kabul salon, complained. “Women are not allowed to enter entertainment places, so what can we do? Where can we go to enjoy ourselves? Where can we gather to meet each other?” The order to close thousands of beauty salons was issued last month by the Taliban’s supreme leader,” Hibatullah Akhundzada. The Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice defended the closure, saying that extravagant sums spent on makeovers caused hardship for poor families and that some treatments at the salons were unIslamic. Too much make-up prevented women from proper ablutions for prayer, the ministry said, while eyelash extensions and hair weaving were also forbidden. Beauty parlors mushroomed across Kabul and other Afghan cities in the 20 years that United States-led forces occupied the country. They were seen as a safe place to gather and socialize away from men and provided vital business opportunities for women. An estimated 60,000 women stand to lose their income from work at some 12,000 salons, according to the Afghanistan Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Since seizing power in August 2021, the Taliban government has barred girls and women from high schools and universities, banned them from parks, funfairs and gyms, and ordered them to cover up in public. Afghan women protest against beauty parlor ban
Security officials shot into the air and used firehoses to disperse dozens of Afghan women protesting in Kabul Wednesday against an order by Taliban authorities to shut down beauty parlors, the latest curb to squeeze them out of public life. Since seizing power in August 2021, the Taliban government has barred girls and women from high schools and universities, banned them from parks, funfairs and gyms, and ordered them to cover up in public. The order issued last month forces the closure of thousands of beauty parlors nationwide run by women -- often the only source of income for households -- and outlaws one of the few remaining opportunities for them to socialize away from home. "Don't take my bread and water," read a sign carried by one of the protesters on Butcher Street, which boasts a concentration of the capital's salons. Public protests are rare in Afghanistan -- and frequently dispersed by force -- but AFP saw around 50 women taking part in Wednesday's gathering, quickly attracting the attention of security personnel. Protesters later shared videos and photos with journalists that showed authorities using a firehose to disperse them as shots could be heard in the background. "Today we arranged this protest to talk and negotiate," said a salon worker, whose name has not been published by AFP for security reasons. "But today, no one came to talk to us, to listen to us. They didn't pay any attention to us and after a while, they dispersed us by aerial firing and water cannon." The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) condemned the protest breakup. "Reports of the forceful suppression of a peaceful protest by women against the ban on beauty salons – the latest denial of women's rights in #Afghanistan – are deeply concerning," it said in a tweet. "Afghans have the right to express views free from violence. De facto authorities must uphold this." In late June the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice gave salons a month to close down, saying the grace period would allow them to use up stock. It said it made the order because extravagant sums spent on makeovers caused hardship for poor families, and that some treatments at the salons were un-Islamic. Too much make-up prevented women from proper ablutions for prayer, the ministry said, while eyelash extensions and hair weaving were also forbidden. A copy of the order seen by AFP said it was "based on verbal instruction from the supreme leader" Hibatullah Akhundzada. - Safe place - Beauty parlors mushroomed across Kabul and other Afghan cities in the 20 years that United States-led forces occupied the country. They were seen as a safe place to gather and socialize away from men and provided vital business opportunities for women. A report to the UN's Human Rights Council last month by Richard Bennett, the special rapporteur for Afghanistan, said the plight of women and girls in the country "was among the worst in the world". "Grave, systematic and institutionalized discrimination against women and girls is at the heart of Taliban ideology and rule, which also gives rise to concerns that they may be responsible for gender apartheid," Bennett said. Akhundzada, who rarely appears in public and rules by decree from the Taliban's birthplace in Kandahar, said last month Afghan women were being saved from "traditional oppressions" by the adoption of Islamic governance and their status as "free and dignified human beings" restored. He said in a statement marking the Eid al-Adha holiday that steps had been taken to provide women with a "comfortable and prosperous life according to Islamic Sharia". Women have also mostly been barred from working for the UN or NGOs, and thousands have been sacked from government jobs or are being paid to stay at home. bur-fox/ecl/dva © Agence France-Presse The post Afghan women protest against beauty parlor ban appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Gentle Hands could reopen with conditions
The Department of Social Welfare and Development said Gentle Hands Inc. will not be allowed to operate without first securing a fire safety inspection certificate or FSIC. “We know that if you don’t have an FSIC, you will be put on the negative list and automatically consider your business permit null and void because these permits are provisional and anchored on the fire safety and occupancy permit,” DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian told reporters, shortly after Wednesday’s inquiry by the Senate committee on women, children, family relations and gender equality. DSWD’s fact-finding team, Gatchalian said, is working on the physical, finance and admin, as well as the case and program management of the orphanage. The DSWD earlier issued a cease and desist order against Gentle Hands Inc. for violating Republic Act 7610 or the Special Protection of Children against Child Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination, which prompted the Senate to investigate the matter. Even if the orphanage complies with RA 7610, Gatchalian said, the DSWD will still have to complete its assessment of GHI’s compliance with the minimum standards for residential facilities for children. He added that the National Authority on Child Care will also have to assess the orphanage’s help intervention since there was reportedly a “high rate of disruptions” among adopted children. “So there are two (assessments)that are ongoing and we will consolidate the reports and we will publish it as soon as possible,” he said. Gatchalian defended the closure of the orphanage saying it was afforded due process before the issuance of the DSWD’s order. During the inquiry sought by Senators Risa Hontiveros and Koko Pimentel, the allegations that led to the issuance of the cease and desist order against the orphanage were discussed. Among the reviewed topics were the DSWD’s policies on the living standards for residential facilities for children, and the evaluation of the process undertaken by the DSWD on the removal of children from the childcare facility. Hontiveros said it appears that the inquiry has created a polarizing atmosphere among the parties involved amid the significance of tackling the issue. “While it is understandable to some extent given the value we ascribe to our children, it would be good to remind all of us that we are here to seek clarity, and ultimately, to find solutions to problems that impact children who are among the most vulnerable,” she said. Small firms need full credit access
An executive of a digital bank has underscored the need to provide financial access to micro businesses for them to thrive. UNO Digital Bank and 1Sari Financing Corporation have partnered to provide credit to neighborhood convenience stores, known in the Philippines as sari-sari stores, which number to around 1.3 million across the country. Manish Bhai, UNO Digital Bank chief executive officer and founder, in a reply to emailed questions from the Philippine News Agency on Wednesday, said “lending to micro-retailers is an uncharted territory but we feel this is a hugely underserved segment that deserves access to formal credit.” He said these convenience stores “operate on a very cash-dependent day to day basis.” Less inventory, less sales Thus “if they fall short of cash, they will not be able to replenish inventory, leading to lower sales,” he said. Bhai said this situation “is an endless cycle that if not properly managed can lead to the closure of the business.” “Since SMEs (small and medium enterprises) contribute significantly to our local economy, suppressing credit access to this segment will have an impact not only on the barangay (village) level but also the national level,” he added. Under the team-up with 1Sari Financing Corporation, Uno Digital Bank intends to provide lending to sari-sari store owners in a bid to lessen the latter’s reliance on informal fund sources. Bhai said only around 11 percent of Filipinos borrow from the formal sector, or the banks and other financial institutions. “We want to take that number up. We believe credit inclusion is a very important part of financial empowerment,” he said. He declined to give figures on the target loan disbursements for the year but said they intend to extend loans to areas where 1Sari Financing Corporation currently has operations and these are in Laguna, Batangas and Cavite. Bhai said that while they know the risks of lending to micro businesses, “this is the reason we hope to learn more about this underserved market and there’s no way of doing this but to get our feet wet.” “At the end of the day, we always have our credit policies, which ensures that we have sound and prudent credit risk management in place,” he added. It also has seven rooms dedicated for guests with special needs. [caption id="attachment_145629" align="aligncenter" width="525"] DELUXE Premier[/caption] All rooms are fully equipped with essential amenities, such as an in-room electronic safety box, wall-mounted TV, tea and coffee-making facilities, a minibar and wireless Internet connection. [caption id="attachment_145630" align="aligncenter" width="525"] BELMONT Café, the hotel’s all-day dining outlet offering Asian and Mediterranean dishes.[/caption] Interestingly, most units feature expansive views of the Magellan Bay and the Hilutungan Channel, a deep-water channel that separates Mactan Island from Olango Island. With regards to its location, guests arriving via Cebu International Airport will only take at least 15 minutes to reach the hotel. Del Valle says Belmont provides a logical choice for guests with a business mindset. “Since we opened, we host mainly guests who visit the area for business,” he shares. “The hotel features facilities built specifically for MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions), team-building, networking and corporate celebrations across our four available function rooms that can accommodate a maximum of capacity 120 guests down to 30 guests.” These function spaces are equipped with smart-control projectors and sound systems. “The Mactan Island is populated by hotels and resorts focusing heavily on leisure and wellness, so we are very excited to bring a new kind of hospitality experience through Belmont Hotel Mactan,” says Cleofe Albiso, managing director of Megaworld Hotels and Resorts. “Just like the first two Belmont Hotel properties in Newport City in Pasay and Boracay Newcoast in Aklan, Belmont Hotel Mactan will host guests who are in the area for both business and leisure.” She adds: “They can expect the usual topnotch amenities that enable rest and relaxation, but because we want to address the need for Mactan to be MICE-ready we have also built here facilities for business events. Coupled with the Megaworld brand of hospitality, we are very proud to say this kind of experience is something that cannot be found anywhere else on this side of Cebu.” Rich history Stepping inside the lobby, Belmont Hotel becomes a tribute to Cebu’s festive culture, landmarks, marine life, rich history as showcased through numerous art installations. For instance, colorful headdresses used in Cebu’s Sinulog are displayed in the walls of its all-day dining outlet, Belmont Café; Cebu’s finest handcrafted guitars in different sizes and colors are mounted in the chic hangout spot, Zabana Bar; and the room’s wall art paper features popular things Cebu is known for, from guitars to its delicacies, such as otap and puso (rice wrapped and boiled in woven coconut leaves). To relax and unwind, the central amenity area on the third floor has the swimming pool and kiddie pool, female and male wet and dry sauna, outdoor lounge with elevated deck, fitness center and viewing deck where guests can marvel at the beauty of the nearby sea and the rest of the township and the Mactan Island. In terms of food outlets, guests can also savor a variety of cuisines and delicacies from the hotel’s three food and beverage outlets. Belmont Café offers a wide variety of Asian and Mediterranean dishes, as well as other local delicacies. Just a few steps away from Belmont Café is the Zabana Bar, where guests can enjoy a selection of cocktails and refreshing beverages. [caption id="attachment_145635" align="aligncenter" width="525"] FITNESS center.[/caption] Over on the third floor is the Float Pool Bar, where guests can sample a variety of snacks and beverages as they lounge and take a refreshing plunge at the swimming pool. Belmont Hotel is just a few minutes’ walk from the Mactan Newtown Beach, and about five-minute walk away from the Mactan Alfresco, a hawker-type dining destination. “While in the area, don’t forget to visit the notable tourist sites much like the Mactan Shrine where the iconic 20-meter statue of Lapu-Lapu stands or the Sto. Nino de Cebu Mactan Parish Church which is noted to be shaped like the Magellan’s hat,” shares Del Valle. Largest hotel operator With the opening of Belmont Hotel, alongside Savoy Hotel, Megaworld Hotels and Resorts now has a combined room keys of 1,100, the largest number of room keys in the entire Mactan Island. At the same time, it makes Megaworld the largest developer and operator in the entire Cebu province today. “Belmont means Beautiful Mountain in French,” says Harold Geronimo, Megaworld’s vice president for public relations and media affairs. “It was a name created by our chairman Dr. Andrew L. Tan when we launched the first Belmont Hotel in Newport City. He fell in love with the name. He just wanted to create a new brand for Megaworld Hotels and Resorts because the first brand that we introduced was Richmonde Hotel. The second brand was Belmont.” The first Belmont Hotel was opened in 2015 at Newport City in Pasay City. It was followed by Belmont Hotel Boracay. Soon, the fourth Belmont Hotel will open in Iloilo City. Geronimo adds that Belmont Hotel will complement the Savoy Hotel inside the township because the vision of Megaworld is to be able to expand its portfolio of hotels in Mactan Island. They want to cater to more business and leisure travelers. “When we open Savoy Hotel, we notice there has been a high demand for those types of travelers who want to do business meetings here, as well as families and tourists who are on vacation in Mactan Island. We want to cater to both that’s why we are adding more rooms.” Belmont Hotel is still in the process of coordinating with the Department of Tourism for the hotel-star rating. TUCP: Employers’ stance against wage hike ‘overkill’
The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines, whose representative in the Lower House has filed a bill proposing a P150 wage increase for workers, blasted the statement made by eight business groups last week against the wage hike, calling it an "overkill on the poor workers." “It is unfortunate that both employers and economic managers are now ganging up in an 'overkill' on the poor workers' calls to bring up measly real wages to at least be within the poverty threshold. These employers and economic managers are now fearmongering widespread closure of MSMEs and scenarios of spiking inflation should a wage increase be granted,” TUCP vice president Luis Corral said. The statement in question was signed by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Employers Confederation of the Philippines, Philippine Exporters Confederation Inc., Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, IT & Business Process Association of the Philippines, Philippine Hotel Owners Association, Foreign Buyers Association of the Philippines and the United Portusers Confederation of the Philippines, Inc. They insisted that only 16 percent of the labor workforce will benefit from a wage hike, while the remaining number of Filipino workers -- all in informal labor -- will demand more "ayuda" or government’ aid, and that it will also affect many businesses, especially micro, small and medium enterprises. Corral called such statements a "scare-mongering" tactic, and urged them to join in providing the needed help for workers amid challenging economic conditions. “The call for wage increase months ago should have been a wake-up call to the economic managers to save the rapidly deteriorating situation of a majority of the working poor,” Corral said. “Contrary to the argument of resultant MSME closures, the Barangay Micro Business Enterprises and certain retail enterprises are exempt from the minimum wage law. The truth is this 'massive closure' argument is actually camouflage to benefit big employers as there is enough support available for MSMEs, including the increase in consumption that comes with wage increase,” he added. The TUCP has already filed House Bill No. 7871 or the Wage Recovery Act of 2023, which seeks a wage hike that would recover from what it said was the more than three decades of no significant wage increase since the passage of Republic Act Number 6727 or the "Wage Rationalization Act." A Senate counterpart of the measure is Senate Bill Number 2002, filed by Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri, which TUCP backed. The group also reiterated its other proposals such as having more Kadiwa outlets that would lessen food inflation, reducing the weighted average cost of capital in electricity sources by eight percent, and returning to the original return-on-rate-base in electricity value. The TUCP also proposed a P5,000 one-time government financial aid to minimum wage workers and the instatement of the emergency cost-of-living allowance. ABS-CBN shuts down TeleRadyo
Due to financial losses, ABS-CBN Corp. has decided to close down the operations of its top-rated AM radio station TeleRadyo. In a press statement on Tuesday, ABS-CBN admitted it can no longer sustain the operation of the news channel, which means workers will be laid off. “TeleRadyo has been incurring financial losses since 2020. Since ABS-CBN can no longer sustain TeleRadyo’s operations, ABS-CBN is left with no choice but to cease the operations of TeleRadyo effective 30 June 2023 to prevent further business losses,” the company said. “The company is deeply saddened by this closure and having to part ways with the many passionate and committed people who have made TeleRadyo an important source of news and information for many Filipinos,” it added. Despite the development, ABS-CBN assured its audiences that it will continue ramping up its content production and distribution through deals and partnerships with local and international clients. ABS-CBN has entered into a joint venture with Prime Media Holdings Inc. to establish a new company that will produce various programs, which will be supplied to broadcasters and other 3rd party platforms including Philippine Collectivemedia Corporation. Under the agreement, ABS-CBN will have a minority stake in the joint venture, and Prime Media Inc. will be the majority stakeholder. According to ABS-CBN, the tie-up will also give their employees time to look for other job opportunities. “It is also a way to continue providing accurate and balanced news and information to the country,” it added. Despite the absence of a legislative franchise, ABS-CBN managed to cut its net losses by half during the first quarter of the year. Its net loss declined by 56 percent to P2.46 billion last year, from P5.64 billion in 2021. The post ABS-CBN shuts down TeleRadyo appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Sustainability from plant to shelves to every Filipino home
Procter & Gamble Philippines continues to integrate sustainable solutions in its product manufacturing and business operations so that its trusted and superior products are produced and delivered in more sustainable ways from plant to shelves, and ultimately into every Filipino household. One of the largest players in the consumer goods industry in the Philippines, P&G has stepped up to integrate sustainable solutions in its Cabuyao plant, which manufactures most of its products sold domestically. It purchases 100-percent renewable electricity and maintains a zero-manufacturing waste-to-landfill plant. It recycles over 300 metric tons of non-residual waste every year. P&G’s LEED-certified Cabuyao distribution center houses energy-saving facilities that feature the use of roof skylights, roof ventilators and automatic exhaust and supply fans that only run at specific times of the day to save energy during the cooler times. P&G’s offices and plants have also started converting their use of fluorescent lights to LED light fixtures, which use less energy than other types of light bulbs. The company is reducing electricity consumption by utilizing motion detector devices in its lighting fixtures in the distribution center to eliminate the possibility that the lights will accidentally be left on in the mega-facility. P&G also integrates sustainable alternative solutions into its product packaging. Safeguard multipacks eliminated its virgin plastic overwrap packaging to 100-percent recycled paper carton material, saving 8,500 kilometers worth of plastic waste every year, equivalent to one thousand times the length of the world-famous Boracay shoreline. Herbal Essences Bio: Renew Collection also uses 25-percent post-consumer resin for its bottle packaging. As it works on packaging innovations, P&G has also improved its product bundling packaging by converting single-use laminate-based bellybands and stickers to 100-percent FSC-certified papers, resulting in 66-percent less in bundling material usage and a 380,000 kg reduction in plastic waste. To further expand the company’s efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle waste in its business operations, P&G launched its employee-led Project LESS program in 2021 to provide better and more sustainable alternatives to other significant but often overlooked retail materials such point of sales materials. The initiative resulted in the development of “Flexi-POSMs”, which are collapsible, reusable and paper-based in-store displays. P&G’s flexi-POSM has a changeable visual structure that allows house brands to easily redesign and reuse the flexi-POSMs for other brand launches and initiatives. P&G launched a regional sustainability partnership with a leading e-commerce company to recycle used cartons from its Cabuyao plant for use as last-mile packaging in e-commerce delivery. Cartons converted into honeycomb-like protective wraps are now being used as replacements for the previous plastic bubble wrap paddings. The honeycomb-like protective wrap reduces usage of single-use bubble wrap plastic while providing the same quality of packaging protection. The beauty brand Olay also produced a “Ship-In-Own-Container” molded carton packaging for online purchases, eliminating the need for additional customization and last-mile packaging materials such as bubble wrap, fillers and tape. P&G Philippines was recently recognized at the 2022 Asia CEO Awards with the Sustainability Company of The Year’s Circle of Excellence Award. The award is given to organizations that achieved important success in environmental progress and demonstrated leadership and commitment to sustainability.
