Contractor questioned over Cubao asphalt work
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority yesterday questioned a contractor in Cubao, Quezon City for an asphalt overlay project without presenting a schedule. The project was conducted in New York Avenue according to the report of the MMDA, that resulted in a traffic jam in the northbound lanes of EDSA along with the inner roads in Cubao. According to Bong Nebrida, chief of the MMDA Task Force for Special Operations, they saw the asphalt work at dawn yesterday which earned the ire of motorists in the northbound lane of EDSA. Nebrida said the main arterial route of New York Avenue is being used by provincial buses to reach their respective terminals. Due to the asphalt project the exit of the buses was delayed because New York Avenue was closed to traffic and they opted to go to EDSA resulting to traffic jam that reached Santolan Avenue. Bong Go calls on DSWD, concerned agencies to update list of indigent senior citizens
Senator Christopher "Bong" Go emphasized the need to update the list of indigent senior citizens, in accordance with Republic Act No. 11916. The said law also mandates an increase in the pension of indigent senior citizens -- from PHP500 to PHP1,000. RA 11916 or an Act Increasing the Social Pension of Indigent Senior Citizens amended RA 7432, the first Senior Citizens Act. The law was co-authored by Go in the Senate. “This amendment is a step forward in ensuring a better quality of life for our senior citizens. It's crucial that we provide them with the necessary support to live comfortably,” Go said. “Nandiyan na ang batas. Dapat maimplementa ito ng maayos para mapakinabangan ng taumbayan lalo na ng mga matatanda na sakop ng batas na ito. Ibigay dapat ang nararapat sa kanila at huwag patagalin pa,” he stressed. Go then cited Section 6 of RA 11916 which mandates the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), transitioning later to the National Council for Senior Citizens (NCSC), to annually update and validate the beneficiary list with the aid of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and the local government units. Go expressed his concern regarding the need to urgently update the list of beneficiaries, as the number of indigent seniors may have increased over time. "It's imperative that we review and promptly update the list of beneficiaries to ensure that the aid reaches the senior citizens who are truly qualified to benefit from the law," Go remarked. Go also co-authored and co-sponsored Senate Bill No. (SBN) 2028, which was principally sponsored by Senator Imee Marcos. The bill aims to provide additional support to individuals who have reached the age of 80 and 90 years old. This proposal amends the Centenarian Act of 2016, acknowledging that not everyone reaches the milestone of a century. He emphasized the cultural significance of caring for the elderly in the country and highlighted the importance of providing them with financial support while they can still benefit from and enjoy it. “Nasa kultura na nating mga Pilipino na alagaan ang ating mga nakakatanda. Dapat natin silang suportahan at bigyan ng pagkilala. Habang kaya pang pakinabangan at ma-enjoy ng senior citizen ang cash gift, ibigay na natin sa kanila,” said Go. Just recently, the Office of Senator Go, together with United Senior Citizens Partylist Rep. Milagros Aquino-Magsaysay, the Office of Senator Robin Padilla, and volunteer organizations, spearheaded an activity for senior citizens on Monday, October 16, during the United Senior Citizens Association-Quezon City (USCAQC) General Assembly held at White Twins Court, Quezon Memorial Circle in Quezon City. Around 1,000 attendees were provided with essential goods from Senator Go such as grocery packs, snacks, and shirts while a select recipient likewise received a cellular phone. The participants were also given various forms of assistance from the participating offices to promote the welfare of the elderly. Meanwhile, Go urged senior citizens to utilize the services of Malasakit Centers for medical assistance they might need. Initiated by Go in 2018, the Malasakit Centers program was institutionalized under the Malasakit Centers Act of 2019, which he principally authored and sponsored. There are now 159 Malasakit Centers nationwide that have helped more than seven million Filipinos. “Prioritizing the needs of the underprivileged, especially senior citizens, in public service delivery is paramount. Rest assured, I will continue to support programs aimed at improving the lives of the elderly,” concluded Go. Bong Go appeals for immediate action to protect OFWs caught in Israel-Gaza Conflict
Senator Christopher "Bong" Go has issued an urgent appeal to various government agencies, including the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), and the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), to conduct immediate action to account Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) affected by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. As Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Migrant Workers, Go emphasized the need for a swift and comprehensive inventory of affected OFWs, particularly those who may have been victims of violence. There is also a need to plan for their immediate repatriation when necessary. "The safety of our kababayans is paramount. I urge the DMW, DFA, and POEA to act swiftly and ensure that every Filipino worker is accounted for," said Go. The senator also appealed to OFWs to ensure their safety by coordinating with the Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv. "I understand that many of you have built lives abroad, but your safety should always come first. Please coordinate with our embassy and avail yourselves of the government's assistance," Go advised. According to a recent report by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), around 200 OFWs based in the Gaza Strip are currently being monitored due to the conflict. The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) has also released a statement on President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.’s directive to DMW and OWWA to locate and account for all OFWs and their families in Israel. The government is also closely coordinating with the Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv and the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Israel to ensure their safety and welfare. Meanwhile, DMW has opened a hotline, as well as several mobile numbers, to accept calls and queries from OFWs and the Filipino community who are in need of government assistance. Go urged OFWs to make use of these channels to protect fellow Filipinos. The senator is a long-time advocate of OFW welfare. He was one of the authors and co-sponsors of Republic Act No. 11641, which created the DMW. "The DMW Act was designed to protect our OFWs. Now, more than ever, it's time to put this law into action to protect our kababayans," Go emphasized. As the Israel-Gaza conflict continues to escalate, Go said that the Philippine government should take all necessary steps to ensure the safety and well-being of OFWs caught in the crossfire. "I call upon all relevant agencies to work hand in hand in this endeavor. Let us set aside bureaucracy and focus on immediate action. Lives are at stake here,” he urged. “Proteksyunan natin ang buhay ng bawat Pilipino nasaan man sila sa mundo lalo na ang mga itinuturing nating modern-day heroes na OFWs na nagtatrabaho para mayroong maitustos sa pamilya nilang naiwan,” he added,” Go concluded. Go seeks proper HCW compensation
In a recent Committee on Finance hearing on Thursday, 28 September, for the Department of Health’s budget, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go expressed concern over the proposed P19.9-billion funding allocated for the unpaid allowances of healthcare workers, asking whether these are enough to cover the entire workforce. “We want to know if this budget is enough to cover the balances due to our healthcare workers. We must properly compensate our health workforce,” said Go in a recent Committee on Finance hearing last 28 September. Go’s concerns echo his previous calls for the DoH and the Department of Budget and Management to expedite the release of Covid-19 allowances for healthcare workers. He emphasized the urgency of providing healthcare workers with their well-deserved benefits, especially for their services during the pandemic. Go is one of the authors and co-sponsors in the Senate of Republic Act 11712, which grants benefits and allowances to healthcare workers during public health emergencies like the Covid-19 pandemic. Public and private healthcare workers covered by the law are entitled to emergency allowance for every month of service during a state of public health emergency based on the risk categorization. “While we are doing everything to make healthcare more accessible to Filipinos, let us not forget our healthcare workers. I am appealing to DoH and our finance managers to make sure that the benefits due to our healthcare workers in accordance with prevailing laws are released efficiently and without further delays,” he said. Bong Go ensures uninterrupted services amid PhilHealth website cyberattack
Senator Bong Go emphasized the need for the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. to take immediate and stringent measures to protect its digital platforms against data breaches and ensure that its services remain uninterrupted. Go, in an interview after aiding poor residents in Talugtug, Nueva Ecija, said, "Unang-una, as per reports po, sabi ng PhilHealth, wala namang leakage ng mga personal information after ma-hack po ang website ng PhilHealth.” It can be recalled that PhilHealth recently admitted it was a victim of a cyberattack. Go emphasized the immediate need for preventive measures to ensure that such cyberattacks do not happen again. He calls for swift action to bolster the cybersecurity defenses of PhilHealth and other government digital platforms. “Dapat po'y magkaroon ng preventive measures kaagad na hindi po maulit itong mga ganitong cyber-attack. Abangan natin ang resulta ng imbestigasyon ng PhilHealth ukol dito,” he urged. Go, chairperson of the Committee on Health stressed the importance of ensuring that PhilHealth's services remain uninterrupted. He points out that its database is crucial as it serves over 104 million members. “Karamihan sa mga Pilipino ay nangangailangan ng tulong sa pagpapahospital. Dapat po'y walang maantala sa kanilang serbisyo na ibinibigay po ng PhilHealth sa bawat hospital. 'Yun po ang dapat matutukan,” he said. Despite the cyberattack, PhilHealth has reassured its members that they can continue to access services from accredited healthcare facilities. The agency has implemented interim steps to maintain uninterrupted services and promised to fix the compromised computer systems by 2 October. Bong Go urges gov’t to support small farmers amid inflation
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go calls on the government to provide more support to small farmers as they are the backbone of the nation's economy and play a crucial role in maintaining the country's food security. Go, a member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, has been supportive of legislative efforts aimed at uplifting the lives of Filipino farmers, particularly in these challenging economic times. He contributed to the passage of Republic Act No. 11953, known as the New Agrarian Emancipation Act, which he co-sponsored and co-authored in the Senate. This landmark legislation condones loans, including interests, penalties, and surcharges, incurred by agrarian reform beneficiaries. By doing so, it aims to alleviate the financial burdens faced by over 600,000 agrarian reform beneficiaries across the Philippines, thereby enhancing their economic resilience. In addition to this, Go also authored and co-sponsored RA 11960 or the One Town, One Product (OTOP) Philippines Act. This law decentralizes economic opportunities by empowering each town and province to develop and promote its unique products. By doing so, it not only fosters community-led innovation but also bridges the urban-rural economic divide, providing small farmers with more avenues to market their produce. Go also emphasized the importance of encouraging end users to directly purchase from producers. This not only helps the farmers but also ensures that consumers get fresh and affordable produce. "It's not only about us not needing to import from other countries. It's about recognizing and supporting our local farmers and agrarian reform beneficiaries,” Go added. As the nation navigates through economic challenges, Go reiterated that the most important thing is that no one goes hungry. "Dapat po, walang magutom. Importante po dito tiyan ng bawat Pilipino," he said. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, the inflation rate rose to 5.3 percent in August, up from 4.7 percent in July. The increase in inflation was primarily due to the faster rise in prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages. Specifically, inflation for food and non-alcoholic beverages accelerated to 8.1 percent in August. The year-on-year growth rate for rice prices rose to 8.7 percent from 4.2 percent. The government has implemented a cap on rice prices to reduce costs and penalize hoarding, although this measure has sparked discussions about its impact on both farmers and consumers. Revilla calls for ‘better retirement plan’ for gov’t workers
Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. on Wednesday called for a “better retirement plan” that is responsive to the current economic situation. Revilla raised these concerns during a public hearing by the Senate Committee on Civil Service, Government Reorganization and Professional Regulation on the two measures promoting the welfare of the country’s pool of government workers. The Senate panel discussed the proposed lowering of the retirement age of government employees from 65 to 60 years old for compulsory retirement and from 60 to 56 years old for optional retirement It also tackled the automatic promotion of government employees upon retirement. Revilla cited the significant role of the government employees in society. “They are the State’s partners in delivering essential services to our countrymen. And with the role they play in bridging our government closer to our kababayans, they may very well be considered as front-liners,” he added. Revilla also rallied for the passage of the Senate Bill 1832 which seeks to amend Republic Act 8291 or the Government Service Insurance System Act of 1997 so that a government employee can already retirement and receive benefits at an earlier age of 56. “There is a need for a better retirement plan for the public sector that is responsive to the current economic situation and would honor the government’s civil servants selfless service to the nation,” he said. Meanwhile, Revilla also underscored the need to legislate Senate Bill 1568 to grant automatic promotion equivalent to one grade higher than a government employee's salary grade at the time of their retirement, with the adjusted salary grade becoming the basis for the computation of their retirement benefits. “Karapat-dapat lang na ipagkaloob natin sa ang ating mga lingkod-bayan ang automatic promotion. Ito naman ay hindi kalabisan para masuklian natin ang dedikasyon at pagsusumikap na kanilang pinamalas sa pagsisilbi hindi lang sa ating pamahalaan, kundi sa taumbayan mismo,” he said. Go calls for vigilance, continued bayanihan
Recognizing the heightened vulnerability that comes with the onset of the typhoon season, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go emphasized the importance of preparedness and cooperation during typhoon season, urging citizens to stay informed about weather updates and heed the advice of local authorities to ensure their safety and that of their families. Go made the remarks as his team provided grocery packs to 500 typhoon “Egay” victims in Kalinga on Thursday, 10 August, in coordination with Governor James Edduba. In Tabuk City, Kalinga, the relief operations were held at Purok Isla and Purok 2 in Barangay San Juan, and Purok Vicente in Barangay Magsaysay As part of his commitment to ensure the welfare of Filipinos, Go reminded the beneficiaries that there are six Malasakit Centers in the Cordillera Administrative Region if they require assistance to cover their medical expenses. These Malasakit Centers are located at the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center, Benguet General Hospital in La Trinidad, Far North Luzon General Hospital and Training Center and Conner District Hospital in Apayao, and Luis Hora Memorial Regional Hospital and Bontoc General Hospital in Mountain Province. With a total of 158 centers established nationwide, the Malasakit Centers program has already provided assistance to more than seven million indigent patients. This initiative was spearheaded by Go and later formalized under Republic Act 11463, a legislative measure he principally authored and sponsored. The Philippine National Games bill seeks to institutionalize a truly comprehensive national grassroots sports program that will harness the vast potential of Filipinos in discovering and developing champion athletes who could excel in international sports competitions. “Through the years, we have witnessed how the Filipino athletes stand out in various international sports competitions, such as the Southeast Asian Games, the Asian Games, para games, world championships and Olympics. The accomplishments of our athletes have inspired and brought pride to the Filipino people, demonstrating that we can excel in sports with hard work, perseverance and determination,” Go said. Bong Go extends aid to Kalinga typhoon victims, calls for greater disaster vigilance
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go had his team provide grocery packs to 500 Typhoon Egay victims in Kalinga on Thursday, 10 August, in coordination with Governor James Edduba. In Tabuk City, Kalinga, the relief operations were held at Purok Isla and Purok 2 in Barangay San Juan, and Purok Vicente in Barangay Magsaysay. Recognizing the heightened vulnerability that comes with the onset of the typhoon season, Go emphasized the importance of preparedness and cooperation within communities. He urged citizens to stay informed about weather updates and heed the advice of local authorities to ensure their safety and that of their families. As part of his commitment to ensure the welfare of Filipinos, Go also reminded the beneficiaries that there are six Malasakit Centers in the Cordillera Administrative Region if they require assistance to cover their medical expenses. These Malasakit Centers are located at the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center, Benguet General Hospital in La Trinidad, Far North Luzon General Hospital & Training Center and Conner District Hospital in Apayao, and Luis Hora Memorial Regional Hospital and Bontoc General Hospital in Mountain Province. This initiative was spearheaded by Go and later formalized under Republic Act No. 11463, a legislative measure he principally authored and sponsored. “Patuloy po akong tutulong sa pagpaparami ng Malasakit Centers sa bansa. Andiyan na po sa loob ang apat na ahensya ng gobyerno para sa mga available na medical assistance programs. Target po nito na pababain nito ang inyong hospital bill to the lowest amount possible,” Go explained. “Huwag ho kayong mahihiyang lumapit sa mga Malasakit Centers. Para po yan sa Pilipino. Nalulungkot po ako tuwing may mga nagaalangan magpatingin sa doctor dahil natatakot sila sa babayaran sa hospital. Pangalagaan niyo po ang inyong kalusugan at ang Malasakit Center ay handang tumulong sa inyo,” he added. Go, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, also supported the construction of a Super Health Center (SHC) in Lagawe, which will offer basic health services, such as database management, out-patient, birthing, isolation, diagnostic (laboratory: x-ray and ultrasound), pharmacy and ambulatory surgical unit. Other available services are eye, ear, nose, and throat service, oncology centers, physical therapy and rehabilitation center and telemedicine, which makes remote diagnosis and treatment of patients possible. “Sa panahong ito, magtulungan tayo upang maipagpatuloy ang pagbangon at pag-asa. Patuloy nating ipagdasal ang isa't isa at patuloy na magmalasakit sa ating mga kapwa Pilipino,” said Go. Bong Go calls for review of flood control, agricultural support strategies
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go outlined his appeals to help address two pressing issues in the country namely agricultural support and flood control, in a bid to bolster the agricultural sector and the country’s food security. "Maliban po sa mga interventions natin para sa ating local farmers, kailangan din nating paigtingin ang ating kampanya laban sa agricultural smuggling,” said Go in an interview on August 10, Thursday, after assisting poor residents in Alaminos City, Pangasinan. Go also stressed that both farmers and consumers cannot just wait when market prices are better. He appealed to concerned agencies to provide marketing assistance to farmers to help them trade and sell their products on their own at better prices. “Unahin po natin, proteksyunan po natin ang ating local farmers, suportahan po natin sila. At importante dito, ang mga farmers natin dapat po maging masaya,” he added. He further emphasized the need to empower farmers to form cooperatives and to establish post-harvest facilities. He stated, "Marami naman pong tulong ang ating gobyerno, importante po ma-guide sila ng maayos.” “Importante po magkaroon sila ng post-harvest facilities. Malaking tulong po ito na mapanatili ang quality ng kanilang produkto at maibenta nila sa tamang presyo,” added Go. Meanwhile, Go appealed to the Department of Public Works and Highways to review strategies on flood control projects given this recurring problem that also affects agricultural lands. “Kahapon po, during (the) Senate Committee (on Public Works) hearing on the country’s flood control, masterplan and priority projects, una ko pong hiningi sa kanila ‘yung kanilang accomplishment report,” he said. “Kahit noong panahon pa ni dating pangulong (Rodrigo) Duterte noong 2019, may pondo na po diyan na mga P82 billion, 2020 P80.7 billion… Kada taon may pondo pong inilaan sa flood control, ano na ho ba ang natapos nila at ano ho ba ang accomplishment report nila?,” he added. Go also questioned the prioritization of flood control projects and locations where these are built. “Ilagay ninyo po sa mga lugar na flood-prone areas. Pampanga, Bulacan, NCR (National Capital Region). Para proteksyunan ang tao. ‘Wag n’yong ilagay sa mga lugar na wala naman kayong pino-proteksyunan, wala namang tao,” he exclaimed. Go stressed on 9 August, Wednesday, the need for accountability, strategic prioritization, and long-term solutions to address recurring problems in flood-prone areas during a Committee on Public Works hearing on the country's flood control master plan and outstanding projects. “Yun lang po sir ang tatlong hiningi ko: (1) accomplishment report, (2) copy of master plan at (3) prioritization dito sa mga flood control projects ninyo po na dapat po’y makinabang yung mga lugar na dapat makinabang – yung mga flood prone areas,” he asked during the hearing. Go’s demand for accountability, transparency, and prioritization in flood control projects align with his broader efforts to help affected communities recover and rebuild. His team has been consistently providing relief to affected communities in Central and Northern Luzon. “Malaking abala ang pagbaha para sa ating mga kababayan at malaki rin ang pinsalang dulot nito sa mga ari-arian at kabuhayan nila. Higit sa lahat, inilalagay nito sa alanganin ang buhay ng mga tao, kaya naman nararapat lamang na masolusyunan ito sa lalong madaling panahon,” he said earlier. Bong Go calls on Chinese gov’t to ‘stop bullying’ Philippines
Senator Christopher "Bong" Go condemned at the Senate plenary on Monday, 7 August the recent harassment of Philippine vessels by the Chinese Coast Guard. The harassment in question took place during a peaceful resupply mission to the Ayungin Shoal on 5 August. The Chinese Coast Guard used a water cannon against the Philippine vessels, an act Go has vehemently condemned. "Grabeng respeto ang ibinigay sa inyo, simula pa noong panahon ni dating pangulong Duterte. Sa anim na taon, binigay ni Pangulong Duterte ang lahat ng respeto,” he said in his manifestation in support of the privilege speech of Senate President Migz Zubiri. The senator’s condemnation references the cordial diplomatic relationship cultivated under the previous administration of then president Rodrigo Duterte, where much respect was extended to China. Go emphasized the need for resilience and strength in the face of such incidents, urging the nation to uphold its worth and to protect its sovereignty. He asserted, "What is ours is ours. We must remain consistent on our foreign policy of being friends to all enemy to none. But we must also stand firm on protecting our sovereignty." The senator has also appealed to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., being the chief architect of the country's foreign policy, to continue to safeguard the safety of Filipinos and the country’s national interests. He expressed his confidence that Marcos will uphold the country's sovereign rights over the West Philippine Sea with the assistance of international partners. He emphasized that this issue does not solely concern the Philippines but also the entire world. Go called upon members of the international community to demonstrate sincerity not just in words, but in actions, in respecting other nations. The PCG has already condemned the Chinese Coast Guard's actions and called it "illegal" and "dangerous". These actions, the PCG said, not only disregarded the safety of the crew and the supply boats, but also violated international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, and the 2016 Arbitral Award. Bong Go calls for stronger government interventions in agriculture
Senator Christopher "Bong" Go urged for immediate and stronger government interventions in the agricultural sector amid concerns over the global rice market following India's ban on rice exports. In an interview after attending the groundbreaking of the new Batangas Provincial Medical Center in Tuy, Batangas on 3 August, Thursday, Go addressed fears of a rice crisis due to the exportation ban by India. "Ang importante dito ay ang ating Department of Agriculture; government intervention agad ang ating umpisahan dito," said Go. "Alam n'yo, 'di naman natin masisisi ang India. May prayoridad din po sila, may pinapakain po sila. May sarili din silang market. S'yempre, tayo, hindi nila prayoridad ang pag-export para dito sa atin,” he added. Go's call to action is a significant response to the growing concerns about India's export ban on non-basmati white rice, a move that could impact global rice markets. The senator stressed the need to focus on supporting local farmers and boosting the domestic production of rice through multiple means, such as providing drought-resistant rice seeds, more fertilizers, additional irrigation, increased training, and easy access to credit facilities with low-interest rates. "Ang mga farmers natin, karamihan po d'yan, ay walang pera po. Isang kahig, isang tuka; suportahan po natin sila para meron na rin tayong kakayahan na mag-produce po ng ating sarili," Go said. India's decision to ban rice exports has implications far beyond its borders, as the country accounts for more than 40 percent of the global rice trade. The timing of the ban is particularly unfortunate for the Philippines, as the nation is already grappling with flooded rice fields due to recent typhoons and monsoon conditions. With Vietnam, the main supplier of the Philippines' rice imports, already increasing its price, Go's call for self-reliance and strengthening of the local agricultural sector becomes even more pertinent. "Mahalaga para sa akin ang laman ng tyan ng bawat Pilipino," he said. "Dapat po ay walang magutom. Kaya magtulungan tayo. 'Wag tayong umasa sa ibang bansa. Dapat po ay maging productive tayo na bansa, lalung lalo na po, suportahan natin ang ating local farmers," Go stressed further. Bong Go provides support to flood victims in Davao City
In an effort to bolster the country's disaster preparedness and response capabilities, Senator Christopher "Bong" Go has been advocating for two crucial bills in the Senate that he earlier filed: Senate Bill No. (SBN) 188, which seeks to establish the Department of Disaster Resilience (DDR), and SBN 193, mandating the establishment of mandatory evacuation centers nationwide. On Saturday, July 29, Go led two relief operations for thousands of flood victims in Barangays Lasang and Bunawan in Davao City. In his speech, Go said that the government should remain proactive in its approach in dealing with disaster-related situations, considering that the country is highly vulnerable to natural calamities. SBN 188 proposes the creation of the DDR, an independent government agency dedicated to strengthening the nation's resilience against the impacts of natural and human-induced disasters. The DDR aims to consolidate disaster-related functions and resources from different agencies under a single, unified body. By streamlining disaster response efforts, the department can facilitate quicker and more efficient aid delivery to affected communities during times of crisis. Preposition of goods by the DSWD,” Go added. Restoration of normalcy kaagad at rehabilitation effort,” he said. The Office of Civil Defense has recently voiced its support for the establishment of the DDR, emphasizing the importance of such institution in improving operations in managing and responding to future crises. "Things can be better if there will be an independent authority or department, but it’s not that simple – tanggap po namin iyon… We leave it to Congress and we leave it to the Palace, to Malacañang. Meanwhile, kami naman, we are doing our best given the limitations, makakaasa po kayo," OCD Administrator Ariel Nepomuceno said in a past interview. Alongside the establishment of DDR, Go champions SBN 193, which calls for the creation of mandatory evacuation centers across the Philippines. These evacuation centers are designed to be equipped with necessary facilities to provide temporary shelter and essential services to evacuees during disasters. The senator noted that these evacuation centers will be strategically placed in areas less prone to hazards, ensuring the safety and well-being of evacuees during disasters. Furthermore, the centers will be equipped with essential amenities such as food, clean water, medical services, sanitation facilities, and temporary sleeping quarters. Go cited that the Philippines, located in the Pacific Ring of Fire and the typhoon belt, is no stranger to the destructive forces of nature. “Yearly, the country faces the threat of typhoons, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, and other hazards. These disasters not only result in loss of lives and livelihoods but also impede economic progress and development,” shared Go. To minimize the devastating impact of disasters, Go underscored that comprehensive disaster resilience measures are imperative. The senator is confident that by supporting these priority bills, the Senate and the Filipino people can collectively work towards a safer, more resilient nation, where communities can recover swiftly and thrive even in the face of adversity. “Ang lugar natin nasa Pacific Ring of Fire tayo. Together with Councilors Dante Apostol, Marissa Abella, Diosdado Mahipus, and Al Ryan Alejandre, Go provided grocery packs, masks, vitamins, and snacks to 4,399 flood victims. The senator also extended shoes, mobile phones, bicycles, watches, and balls for basketball and volleyball to select recipients. Meanwhile, Go, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health, urged those who have health issues to seek assistance from the Malasakit Center at the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) in Davao City. The Malasakit Centers Act of 2019, which Go principally authored and sponsored, brings together various government agencies, including the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the Department of Health (DHOH), the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PHIC), and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), under one roof to provide a convenient process for availing medical assistance particularly for poor and indigent patients in public hospitals. There are now 158 Malasakit Centers nationwide which have assisted more than seven million Filipinos, according to DOH data. In SPMC alone, the Malasakit Center there has assisted more than 200,000 patients. On the same day, Go attended the ribbon-cutting of the multipurpose building in Brgy. Lasang and road concretion with drainage canal construction in Brgy. Bunawan, two infrastructure projects he supported the funding of as vice chairperson of the Senate Committee on Finance. He likewise supported the acquisition of multi-purpose vehicles for the community, construction of various multipurpose buildings and local roads, rehabilitation of water systems, drainage systems and flood control structures in different barangays throughout the city, the construction of a 300-bed capacity infectious diseases building for SPMC and the acquisition of ambulances, among others. ### The post Bong Go provides support to flood victims in Davao City appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
ICC probe: Allow now, challenge later
The Philippines may just let the International Criminal Court’s investigation into the bloody drug war of the previous administration roll in the meantime and then challenge its jurisdiction later, according to Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez Thursday. The government, whose plea to block the probe fell on deaf ears, has high hopes the international tribunal would eventually grant its appeal to lay off the country. “The proper and only course of action for the Republic of the Philippines is to raise the issue of jurisdiction when the case is eventually filed in the ICC. Jurisdiction can be questioned at any stage of the proceedings,” said Rodriguez, a lawyer. “When the case is brought to the ICC, we raise the issue of jurisdiction, and the Philippines will surely secure its dismissal for lack of jurisdiction,” he added. Calls have been made to end the ICC’s probe into former President Rodrigo Duterte’s “war on drugs” that claimed thousands of lives during his six years in office that started in 2016. Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla has firmly maintained that the country would not engage with the ICC, insisting the government would not let the court interfere in the country’s business. ‘Oplan Tokhang’ Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa, who during the Duterte administration led the anti-drug campaign known as “Oplan Tokhang,” had previously said he was ready in case a warrant of arrest was served on him, but only if by Philippine authorities and not by any foreigner directed by the ICC. But for Rodriguez, the government officials concerned should compose themselves and study the ICC decision well. “There is no need for our government officials to make many extraneous comments on the decision,” he said. Some 6,000 persons were reportedly killed in Duterte’s drug war, according to government data, the majority of whom were from low-income families. However, local and international human rights organizations estimated the number of victims at more than 30,000. Meanwhile, senators expressed dismay at the ICC decision that turned down the Philippine appeal, saying there was no need for it since the Philippines has a “working justice system.” Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. on Thursday said the ICC should not be allowed to meddle in the country’s affairs. “We do not need to remind them that we are a free, independent, and sovereign nation governed by our laws,” he said. Revilla said that since Philippine government officials will be held liable for violations, the laws of the country should prevail and not of foreign prosecutors. “I am befuddled by the ICC’s pursuit of this obvious baseless persecution while legitimate concerns and crimes against humanity are being perpetrated in other parts of the world as we speak. It is obvious the ICC’s interest here is not justice but something else entirely,” he said. Operating very well Senator Mark Villar said there was no need for any international body to intervene in the country’s justice system, stressing that Philippine democracy is fully functioning. He said the Philippine justice system is “operating very well” and it could address its own human rights concerns. “Our government has a very strong justice system that is working so I don’t think we need international interference. We have our courts, we have a strong justice system, that’s what I believe,” Villar said in a recent interview. Aside from Duterte and Dela Rosa, the ICC report included Senator Christopher “Bong” Go and incumbent Vice President Sara Duterte in the probe. Unfazed Dela Rosa has remained unfazed by the ICC ruling and is even mulling another Senate term, although he said the ICC probe will affect a reelection bid. “Since I am identified with the former president, I may not get the votes. The votes I will get will be those in support of [former] president Duterte. But the support may even grow since many Filipinos are also angered by [the ICC’s] interference in our sovereignty, so its impact on my reelection bid may even be positive,” he said. Dela Rosa reiterated that the drug war was launched by the Duterte administration not for any personal gain but “to protect the Filipino people from the drug menace, especially our youth.” The post ICC probe: Allow now, challenge later appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Bong Go calls on consumers, service providers to conserve water
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go underscored the importance of strengthening water conservation efforts in the country and implementing sustainable practices in light of growing concerns about water scarcity and the potential for future water supply shortages. “Kailangan rin po natin sa mga ahensya ng gobyerno, sa mga LGUs, lalo na sa mga barangay level, mas paigtingin po natin ‘yung kampanya sa water conservation. Kung hindi naman po kailangan, ‘wag n’yong gamitin ‘yung tubig, i-check n’yo (kung may) mga leakage (para) walang masayang. Gamitin lang natin nang tama para hindi tayo magkaroon ng water shortage,” Go said in an interview after his visit to Carcar City on Wednesday, 12 July . The senator also stressed the obligation of water service providers to deliver consistent and uninterrupted services to the public, saying, “Bilisan natin itong mga pipeline rehabilitation. Katulad sa Maynila, na-privatize na po ito para sana magkaroon ng maayos na serbisyo. Willing naman po ang taumbayan na magbayad nang tama, sapat basta maayos lang po ‘yung serbisyo.” On Monday, 10 July, Department of Environment and Natural Resources Undersecretary Carlos David stated that the country currently has an adequate water supply; however, he emphasized the importance of proper management to avert a potential water crisis by year-end. To avoid a recurrence of the 2019 incident, wherein numerous households in Metro Manila and parts of Rizal experienced prolonged water interruptions, David highlighted the necessity of effectively managing the existing water resources. The Water Resources Management Office (WRMO) of the DENR has previously issued Bulletin No. 1, which outlines guidelines for government building administrators to implement appropriate water management practices. Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Go urged the government to raise awareness about water conservation and instill a sense of environmental responsibility among Filipinos. He also proposed an intensified greening program as a long-term solution, adding that such a program should be a collaborative effort involving the government and local communities. “Ang long term solution naman po nito itong greening program, kailangan na mas maraming punongkahoy na itatanim natin sa ating mga watershed. When I say greening program, hindi lang magtanim ng seedlings, tapos iwanan na. Kailangan po mayro’ng follow-up. Kaya po tayo mayroong DENR din po na pwedeng mamahala dito,” Go said. Go emphasized that conserving water resources is not only the responsibility of the government but also of every individual, saying, “Pwede rin po nating i-observe itong (water conservation.) Ipatupad natin itong water conservation at para po maka-save naman tayo ng tubig at para po hindi tayo magkaroon ng water shortage.” He urged the public to practice efficient water management techniques, such as reducing water consumption, fixing leaks, and utilizing water-saving technologies, to ensure the sustainability of this vital resource. Bong Go calls for diplomatic solutions amid WPS tension
In the midst of escalating tensions caused by dangerous maneuvers and swarming of Chinese ships in the West Philippine Sea, Sen. Bong Go hopes for peaceful and diplomatic solutions to ensure that the Philippines is able to protect its territorial integrity. Go emphasized in an interview on Monday, 10 July the importance of engaging in constructive dialogue rather than resorting to confrontation. “Alam nyo tulad po ng stand ni dating pangulong (Rodrigo) Duterte, kung ano po ang atin ay atin po ‘yon. What is ours is ours. Ibig sabihin atin po ‘yon. Ipaglaban po natin. Kung ano po ang napanalunan natin, atin po ‘yun. Even an inch, wala po tayong dapat ibigay,” Go said. According to an official statement on Sunday, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) are planning to increase their maritime patrols in the Iroquois Reef in response to the recent presence of Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea. The Western Command of the AFP reported the discovery on June 30, of 48 boats suspected to be part of the Chinese maritime militia near Iroquois Reef, also known as Del Pilar Reef. Iroquois Reef is situated south of the resource-abundant Recto Bank and falls within the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines.
