Joan Baez returns to peace theme in first album in decade

Folk legend Joan Baez on Wednesday announced her first album in a decade, a collection of covers that returns to her longtime theme of global peace. The 76-year-old singer and activist, who earlier this year was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, said "Whistle Down the Wind" will come out on March 2. It will be her second straight album to take its title track from a cover of a song by Tom Waits, the somber and famously raspy-voiced songwriter, following Baez's 2008 "Day After Tomorrow." The new album also features covers of songs by Americana singers Josh Ritter and Joe Henry, who produced "Whistle Down the Wind." In one of the lesser-known covers, B...Keep on reading: Joan Baez returns to peace theme in first album in decade.....»»

Fleetwood Mac helps raise $7 million for charity

NEW YORK --- Rock 'n' roll's dysfunctional family, Fleetwood Mac, joined with artists paying tribute to their work to raise $7 million for down-on-their luck musicians at a benefit in Radio City Music Hall on Friday. The annual MusiCares fundraiser, held each year just before the Grammys, like the awards show was in New York for the first time in 15 years. Fleetwood Mac, made whole again recently when Christine McVie rejoined after a 15-year hiatus, have mellowed and grown more appreciative of their career since their drug-taking, partner-swapping heyday. "Not very far below the level of dysfunction is what really exists and what we're feeling now more than ever in our career, ...Keep on reading: Fleetwood Mac helps raise $7 million for charity.....»»

The Headlines So Far in the 2017-18 NBA Season

The new NBA season is still in its early stages, but it feels like we’re already in the thick of things with so much happening already. Luck of the Irish The Celtics, despite losing Gordon Hayward to a season-ending injury, currently have the best record in the league and own the longest winning streak so far this year with 16 games won consecutively. Kyrie Irving and Al Horford have been leading the charge, with young guns Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum upping their game. It certainly won’t be surprising to see them secure the top seed in the East this season if their remarkable play continues. Steve Kerr even declared the Celtics as the East’s “team of the future.” International Beasts of the East Giannis Antetokounmpo is already staking his claim as the league’s MVP, averaging nearly 30 points a game at a very efficient 55% clip as of this writing. With Eric Bledsoe assisting with ball-handling duties, the young Buck’s play is only bound to get better. Remember, Antetokounmpo still hasn’t even developed an outside shot yet. Imagine what the Greek Freak can do when he finally does. Kristaps Porzingis has also been unleashed in New York after the departure of Carmelo Anthony and Phil Jackson. The Latvian big man has been on a roll, taking advantage of an increased usage rate to average 27.3 points per game. The Knicks are exceeding expectations—The Playoffs doesn’t seem to be a far-fetched reality for them if Porzingis and the rest of the team can keep this up. After playing only 31 games last season, Joel Embiid has been making up for lost time. Along with Ben Simmons, the Cameroonian standout has been leading the Philadelphia to its best start in years, averaging 22.7 points and 11 boards. Additionally, Embiid has been posting roughly 2 blocks per game, and he says that he’s going to go for the Defensive Player of the Year Award this season. It looks like the Sixers fans’ are finally being rewarded for trusting the process. The Rookies Have Been Doing Work In his first season on the floor, Ben Simmons has been averaging 18. 7 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 7.6 assists per outing. And in almost every game, he’s been flirting with a triple-double. At this rate, it looks like he’s going to be the frontrunner in the Rookie of the Year race. Another solid performer is Jayson Tatum, who is one of the primary contributors in the Celtics’ stellar start. He’s been averaging an efficient 14.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.5 assist per game in around 30 minutes of play. From deep, Tatum has been drilling 48% of his threes. With his smart play, sometimes, it feels like we’re not watching a rookie. Kyle Kuzma, perhaps the biggest steal in this year’s draft class, is currently outperforming most rookies picked ahead of him, including fellow Laker and #3 draftee Lonzo Ball. Kuzma has been averaging 16.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 15 assists, and he’s shooting nearly 50% from the field and 36% from deep. While he still has a bit of work to do on the defensive end, he’s shaping up to be a cornerstone in LA’s post-Kobe era. Warriors still Super Team to Beat During the offseason, several teams secured major acquisitions to reinforce their lineups. The Cavs were able to reload with future Hall of Fame guards and versatile wings on board. OKC acquired two All-Stars in Paul George and Carmelo Anthony, but are still in the process of figuring things out. Minnesota was able to add Jimmy Butler to its young core. But despite the trades and signings, the Golden State Warriors remain the most “super” of the squads with the “super team” tag. After starting the season 1-2, the Warriors have regained their dominating form and are now back with their winning ways—and it seems that they won’t be slowing down anytime soon. Kevin Durant has been on a tear, but it’s Steph Curry that currently leads the team in points per game (25.5), steals per game (1.8), and in Player Efficiency Rating (27.6). He remains the fulcrum of Golden State’s offense, the man that won’t let the Dubs down. Steph Curry continues to perform at a high level because he depends on the World’s No. 1 Deodorant to stay cool and confident. The two-time MVP only trusts Rexona Ice Cool to help him fee dry and fresh all day, so he can be his best on the court, and even off it. It’ll be interesting to see if these stories and trends continue as we go along the new season. Stay tuned, hoops fans!  .....»»

Wentz, Eagles roll over Cowboys 37-9 after losing kicker

By Schuyler Dixon, Associated Press ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — No kicker, no problem for the Philadelphia Eagles. Carson Wentz threw for two touchdowns and three 2-point conversions after Philadelphia lost kicker Jake Elliott to a head injury, and the Eagles all but wrapped up the NFC East with a 37-9 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night. The Eagles (9-1) outscored the Cowboys 30-0 in the second half while extending their winning streak to eight games, their longest since 2003-04 and tied with New Orleans for the best current run in the NFL. Philadelphia leads the second-place and defending division champion Cowboys (5-5) by four games with six to play after handing Dallas its worst home loss at 8-year-old AT&T Stadium. Dallas' Dak Prescott threw a career-high three interceptions and lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown in his second straight loss without star running back Ezekiel Elliott, serving a six-game suspension for alleged domestic violence. Jake Elliott's injury wasn't a factor for nearly a half because the NFL-leading Eagles couldn't get in scoring position. They failed to get a first down on five straight first-half drives, starting with one at the Dallas 15 when Elliott missed a 34-yard attempt and soon after left the field. Trailing 9-7 at halftime, Wentz led the Eagles on scoring drives of 75, 90 and 85 yards, the middle one boosted by Jay Ajayi's 71-yard run against his hometown team in his second game since getting traded by Miami. Ajayi had 91 yards on seven carries and LeGarrette Blount added 57 on 13 carries, including a 30-yarder leading to the last offensive touchdown. Eagles coach Doug Pederson declared at halftime that he would go for every fourth down and try 2-point conversions after every touchdown. It came into play right away when Corey Clement scored on an 11-yard run to open the second half and ran in a screen pass behind three blockers for the 2-pointer. The first fourth-down try was Wentz's 17-yard touchdown pass to Alshon Jeffery for a 29-9 lead. That 2-point pass failed. Torrey Smith had the other TD catch, an 11-yarder. After Derek Barnett hit Prescott's leg and arm as he was throwing, Nigel Bradham picked up the loose ball and ran it 37 yards for a touchdown. Wentz's pass to Trey Burton provided the final margin. The Cowboys appeared to have fixed the problems of missing injured left tackle Tyron Smith and 2016 All-Pro linebacker Sean Lee from a week earlier, when they allowed eight sacks of Prescott along with three Atlanta scoring drives following Lee's injury in a 27-7 loss to the Falcons. But after protecting Prescott fairly well before halftime, Dallas allowed three sacks and 180 of Philadelphia's season-high 215 yards rushing in the second half. Prescott was 18 of 31 for 145 yards for a career-worst 30.4 passer rating before backup Cooper Rush took mop-up duty. BRING A JACKET The Cowboys had their retractable roof open for the first time this season despite a game-time temperature of 54 degrees, chilly for the Texas types. It was just the sixth time the roof was open while the huge sliding glass doors behind each end zone were closed since $1.2 billion AT& Stadium opened in 2009. JERRY'S RING Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, embroiled in what has become a public dispute with fellow owners over a contract extension for Commissioner Roger Goodell, received his Hall of Fame ring in a halftime ceremony. He shared the stage with wife Gene Jones and Pro Football Hall of Fame President David Baker. INJURIES Eagles: After missing wide right on the 34-yard field goal in the first quarter, Jake Elliott was evaluated for a head injury. He was in on the tackle on Switzer's long return on the opening kickoff, but made an extra point and kicked off again before the missed field goal. Cowboys: Already missing Lee, replacement Anthony Hitchens left with a groin injury. UP NEXT Eagles: Home against Chicago next Sunday. Cowboys: Los Angeles Chargers visiting for annual Thanksgiving game......»»

Wrestling legend ‘Superfly’s’ granddaughter making Snuka name proud in vball

It’s just Penina Snuka’s first time in the Philippines, but she has been treated like she has been here for long. “Everyone has been so nice and accommodating, but it’s funny because everybody thinks I’m Filipino,” she told reporters. “I’ve had a lot of people just come up to me and just start speaking in your language. It’s such a beautiful language, but I’m looking at them with wide eyes and say, ‘I’m not from here.’” Of course, the Generika-Ayala reinforcement is not a Filipina. She is an American of Samoan descent who played setter for the University of Arizona. While she may not be a Filipina, Snuka still stands out – if you are familiar with her storied surname. “My last name is Snuka and I come from a big wrestling family starting with my grandfather and then my father,” she shared. “I have an auntie and an uncle who are wrestling right now. And of course, also, my uncle is ‘The Rock.’” Penina’s grandfather is the late Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka who was a wrestling star in the ‘80s and ‘90s before being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. Her father is Sim Snuka who was a former WWE Tag Team Champion. Current WWE superstars Roman Reigns and Tamina are her uncle and aunt, respectively. And then, there’s Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who is also her uncle. Indeed, the now 22-year-old comes from a big wrestling family. For her, however, wrestling was never an option. “(Me and my brothers and sisters), as kids, we weren’t really into wrestling. We did a lot of sports – we did basketball, my brothers did (American) football, and I just kind of got into volleyball,” she said. She then continued, “Ever since I got into volleyball in sixth grade, I always loved it. I never wanted to do anything else but volleyball. Volleyball is my whole life.” And so, after a stellar career as in the University of Arizona where she was hailed as Pac-12 Setter of the Year in 2016, Snuka took the opportunity to showcase her skills in a country that is only falling more and more in love with the sport. “(Ayala-Generika) was the first to offer me. I talked to my parents about it and I did a little research, I really got to know them and the Philippines,” she said. She then continued, “I really felt this was a good place. I really felt blessed to be here.” Don’t make the mistake of thinking, however, that she has forgotten that she’s a Snuka – granddaughter and niece to wrestling legends. “I feel really honored that I come from this family. I’m someone who’s very close to my family so leaving them was kinda hard, but knowing that I’m taking that name with me out here, hopefully, I can make a good name for them,” she expressed. In that case, we all better get ready for another Snuka to make a “Superfly Splash.” --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
