DFA: Cause of death of Filipina found in HK pier still unknown
The cause of death of the Filipina who was found dead at a pier in Hong Kong is still being determined, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Monday. In a television interview, DFA Assistant Secretary Paul Cortez said the Philippine government is coordinating with Hong Kong authorities to determine the cause of death of the Filipina. “There is still no official cause of death but foul play is hopefully not in the picture. The police are not looking at any of that sort of incriminating circumstances for the death of our overseas Filipino worker,” Cortez said. Last week, the DFA confirmed the death of a 51-year-old Filipina who was found floating on a pier in Hong Kong. Based on initial reports from the Hong Kong authorities, the body was found in Tsing Yi Public Pier last Thursday following a tip from a passerby in the area. It also said that the Filipina’s body was already in a state of decomposition when it was found. Cortez noted that the employer of the Filipina is not considered a suspect in her death. “The employer is not a person of interest in this case,” he said. Earlier reports said that the OFW asked her employer to have a day off on Sunday. She, however, never returned, prompting her employer to report to the authorities that she was missing. Cortez said the family of the OFW was already informed about the incident. He noted that the agency will provide financial assistance to the family of the OFW. Husband’s tears of joy cap Vondrousova’s ‘impossible’ Wimbledon fairytale
Marketa Vondrousova said her husband's unexpected show of emotion after Saturday's shock Wimbledon final victory against Ons Jabeur was the perfect end to her "impossible" triumph. Vondrousova became the first unseeded woman to win Wimbledon as she stunned the Tunisian world number six on Centre Court. The 24-year-old held her nerve in a tense 6-4, 6-4 win, securing her first major title four years after losing her only previous Grand Slam final at the French Open. So unexpected was her Wimbledon run that the world number 42 told her husband Stepan Simek to stay at home in Prague to look after their cat Frankie, until a pet sitter was found to allow him to travel to London for the final. Twelve months after their wedding, Simek cried tears of joy when he saw Vondrousova after the match. "I think when I came to the box, he cried. I saw him after and he cried a lot," Vondrousova said. "It's amazing, tomorrow is our first wedding anniversary. "That's the first emotion I saw from him over eight years. I think he cried on the wedding day also, but that was it!" With the family cat clearly a major figure in the Vondrousova household, the champion said her pet would get a reward after missing out on the party at the All England Club. "I'm going to buy her some good fish. She's with the cat sitter now. My mom is coming tomorrow to watch her," she said. "She has to wait for us. She doesn't really care what's happening." The outpouring of emotion from Vondrousova's family was triggered by her unlikely journey to Wimbledon glory. She had endured two serious wrist injuries that stalled her promising career since losing the 2019 French Open final. Hampered by her injuries, Vondrousova was reduced to watching her best friend Miriam Kolodziejova attempt to qualify for the Wimbledon main draw last year. "I had a cast last year at that time. I was a tourist here. When I was coming back, I didn't know if I can play at that level again. This seems impossible," she said. 'I couldn't breathe' Given her previous poor form on grass, Vondrousova had no expectations of a long run in this year's tournament. "I didn't play well before on grass. It's unbelievable. Nobody would have told you that I even had a chance to win," she said. "I was unseeded. It's such a crazy journey. I can't believe it." With the Centre Court roof closed due to high winds in London, Vondrousova was able to take advantage of the conditions better than Jabeur. "I was really happy they closed the roof because it's very different than in the windy weather. We practice in Prague in winter indoors. I always play good indoors," she said. Learning from the experience of her French Open final thrashing by Ash Barty, Vondrousova battled to keep her composure as the pressure mounted. "I couldn't breathe. I was thinking to myself, 'Just be over'. I was like crazy nervous," she said. "I just tried to stay calm and keep it together. It was such a relief when I put the match point in." With her place in Wimbledon history assured, the tattooed Vondrousova will turn her attention to some celebratory body art alongside her coach Jan Mertl. "I'll choose for him. Maybe we'll get the same one. We talked before the tournament and he said, 'Yeah, so maybe if you win a Grand Slam, then I'll do it'," she said. "I'm just going to made him do it. I'll show you guys on Instagram after." smg/dj © Agence France-Presse The post Husband’s tears of joy cap Vondrousova’s ‘impossible’ Wimbledon fairytale appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Family attack TikTok amateur sleuths after UK woman’s ‘accidental’ death
A British woman whose mystery disappearance earlier this year sparked a social media frenzy by online sleuths and conspiracy theorists fell into a river and drowned accidentally, a coroner concluded at an inquest on Tuesday. Nicola Bulley went missing in January, apparently vanishing "into thin air". After dropping her two young daughters at school she was seen walking her dog along a river in the rural village of St Michael's on Wyre in northwestern England. The 45-year-old mortgage adviser's phone was later found on a bench still dialed into a work conference call. Her unexplained disappearance saw the online true crime world become awash with speculation about what might have happened to her. One TikTok user even had himself filmed digging up potential burial sites and then captured the moment Bulley's body was pulled from reeds in the river over three weeks later. But ruling that her death had been accidental, coroner James Adeley said she had suffered "cold water shock" after going into the river. He said the exact circumstances of how she fell in could not be known, but evidence showed there had been a steep grassy slope around the bench with an "almost vertical drop" to the water. The river bank itself had no footholds that would have allowed someone in trouble to climb out, he added at the hearing in Preston, northwestern England. In addition, the flow of the river on the day she disappeared would have made it almost impossible to swim against the current, he said. After the hearing, Bulley's family hit out at the social media speculation over her case. "It's upsetting that we've continued to receive negative targeted messages and still witness wildly inaccurate speculation being shared over numerous platforms," the family's lawyer Terry Wilcox said in a statement on their behalf. "We encourage people to look at the facts, the evidence which has been heard during the inquest, and the conclusion reached by the coroner, to ignore any amateur views and opinions, and be mindful of the impact words bring." Detective Chief Superintendent Pauline Stables of Lancashire Police said she hoped the coroner's finding would "put an end to ill-informed speculation and conspiracy theories which have been so damaging to Nikki's family". Lancashire Police were criticized over their handling of Bulley's disappearance, including sharing personal information such as her struggles with alcohol and perimenopause. But the police watchdog said in May that they would face no further action. Coroners' inquests are held in England and Wales to try to establish the causes and circumstances of sudden or unexplained deaths based on the balance of probability. They do not determine criminal or civil liability but set out facts in the public interest.
