Nieky Holzken ready to make an impact in ONE Championship

Nieky Holzken is not letting his difficult past get in the way of his goal of becoming a ONE Super Series World Champion ahead of his promotional debut in the co-main event of ONE: WARRIOR'S DREAM on 17 November at Stadium Istora in Jakarta, Indonesia. Touted by many as one the greatest kickboxers in the world today, Holzken revealed that his difficult past eventually led his focus on honing his skills in martial arts. The sport, he says, molded him to become a better person through years of training. "I was a problem child. I got kicked out of school when I was 9. I had to go to another school. I did not enjoy school. I was very smart, but I didn’t want to learn. If I could do it again, I would do it differently," Holzken shared. "I trained with Ramon Dekkers, Cor Hemmers, and Sjef Weber. Sjef was very good with my boxing, and Ramon and Cor with kickboxing. It gave me personality, character, and respect," he added. Other than refusing to learn in school, "The Natural" also shared that he was raised out of a broken family. He ultimately took something positive out of the situation, and used it to motivate himself to become a good father. "My parents separated, and I only had contact with my father’s family, and no contact with my mother. It made me very hard, and it helped me along the way," he revealed. "I want my children to live with a mom and dad who are together. What I experienced definitely makes me a better dad," he stressed. Having learned from his past and with a goal in sight, Holzken is bent on impressing in his ONE Championship debut as he aims to become one of the organization's world champions in the very near future. "To win in my debut would be great. I want to become the World Champion in ONE," he quipped......»»

Elite 60 Dev’t Camp to serve as start for future Batang Gilas players

The Elite 60 Development Camp strives to be bigger and better now in its second year. And along with providing another avenue for young talent to better themselves, the training program is also providing another avenue for the Philippine national youth basketball team to better itself. “We (have tried) to come up with a program to complement and assist the national team program. That’s why this year, we decided to lower the age group to 16 and under,” camp director Eric Altamirano said in the program’s press conference on Thursday at the Capitol Commons in Pasig. He then continued, “If there’s any player that we can identify, the national team would be able to put them in the pool and have continuous training to hopefully make the national team.” The Elite 60 Development Camp is a training program that scoured the entire country for the best of the best young talent aged 16 and under. It will run from May 10 to 13 at the Colegio de San Agustin Gym in Makati. In its first edition a year ago, it gathered the top Under-18 players such as NCAA Juniors MVP Will Gozum and UAAP Juniors champion RJ Abarrientos. Now, it aims to identify younger talent who may very well serve as the core of Batang Gilas. “After the Elite 60 Camp, the objective is to have the national team coaches to be able to see sino ba ang potential players nila,” Altamirano said. Overseeing the camp alongside Altamirano, will be Rob Beveridge, former head coach of the Australian men’s national basketball team. For Batang Gilas itself, the training program is a much-welcome development. “This will really help us with the identification of talent. We lean on this program to identify the talent that we need,” assistant coach Josh Reyes said. And for that, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is also in all-out support of the Elite 60 Development Camp. “Magandang programa ang na-develop nina coach E at coach Alex [Compton] kaya it’s something worth supporting. Hopefully, this thing carries on through more years,” Gilas team manager Butch Antonio said. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

SKYathon 2018 returns to Boracay

SKYathon Beach Run is back and bigger on its ninth year with the opening of participation to international runners as it aims for greater awareness to raise funds that would help rehabilitate the reefs of Boracay. Organizers of the first destination run in the country are excited with this development. “Among the avid participants of the race are foreigners vacationing in the island. To open this to international delegates will elevate the race not just to a fun run but a race that the running communities around the world will look forward to each year,” said Mr. Delbert Santos, a senior marketing manager from SKY. Set to happen on April 21 at Epic Boracay, it features three categories for runners to choose from; 3K, 5K, and 10K. SKY plays its part in protecting nature by supporting this initiative. A portion of the proceeds from SKYathon will go to the coral reef rehabilitation program. Other than reef rehabilitation there is also a mangrove planting partnership with the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in the area. This year SKYathon introduces #LoveBoracay, a call for a turn towards responsible tourism. Santos said that with the current environmental troubles facing not only the island but also some major tourist spots in the country it’s important for vacationers to keep in mind preserving these natural resources. He said, “This year, besides pushing for the rehabilitation of the coral reefs in Boracay, we’d also like to send out a call to all tourists to take care of the places they are going to. We have to practice responsible tourism so that we can keep the beauty of nature not just for us but most especially for future generations.” Also back this year is Coach Rio de la Cruz’ RunRio, which will organize event. “Since it is RUNRIO’s 4th year in participating the SKYathon run, I am glad that we still continue to organize events like this in Boracay island each year. Catriona Gray s Miss Universe win inspires Filipina warrior Rome Trinidad

Filipina mixed martial artist Rome "The Rebel" Trinidad has a newfound inspiration in Catriona Gray, who was crowned Miss Universe 2018 last Monday, 17 December in Bangkok, Thailand.   The 24-year-old Filipina beauty queen bested 93 other candidates from all over the world, standing out for her signature "lava" catwalk, which made headlines in the news around the globe and trended on social media.   “Catriona is truly an inspiration for us women. She is a living proof that anything is possible through hard work,” Trinidad said.   A familiar face in the Philippine modelling world, Gray is also a martial artist, singer, and advocate of free education and HIV/AIDS awareness.   Touted by both casual and long-time pageant followers as a shoo-in for the crown, she represented the Philippines in the Miss World 2016 pageant but failed to bag the crown, settling for Top Five.   Two years later, Gray won the Binibining Pilipinas 2018 trinket, making her the country's delegate to Miss Universe 2018.   Gray's impact to women is undeniable as it motivates the likes of Trinidad to go the extra mile when it comes to chasing her dream.   "She didn’t give up on her dream. Failures didn’t stop her to reach for her ultimate goal. It is empowering to have a fellow Filipina like Catriona Gray," she stated.   "We belong to a totally different kind of fields, but seeing her succeed boosts my morale and inspires me to pursue my dreams just like her."   2018 has been a big year for the Philippines, especially in the world of combat sports, where six of its celebrated athletes copped gold on the international stage.   Boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao claimed the WBA Welterweight World Championship, stopping Argentina's Lucas Matthysse in the seventh round last July.   Meanwhile, the Philippines established the unprecedented record of most mixed martial arts world title wins in the history of ONE Championship this 2018, courtesy of Eduard Folayang, Kevin Belingon, Geje Eustaquio, Joshua Pacio and Brandon Vera.   Trinidad, a professional model before she ventured into the mixed martial arts scene, is more motivated now than ever after witnessing how far the Philippines has gone in 2018.   She believes that hard work is in a Filipino's DNA, commending her countrymen for the tremendous amount of effort and dedication that they exerted in their respective fields.   "Seeing the Philippines excel in the worlds of boxing, mixed martial arts and beauty pageant is a big motivation," Trinidad shared.   "Our boxing hero Manny Pacquiao became a world champion again this year. In mixed martial arts, the country ended the year with five ONE World Champions. To top it off, Catriona Gray was crowned Miss Universe 2018."   Trinidad was last seen in action this past May when she took on Priscilla Hertati Lumban Gaol  ONE: GRIT & GLORY, yielding to the Indonesian hometown hero by way of first-round submission.   Although her 2018 did not turn out the way she wanted it to be, the nation’s banner year in combat sports and beauty pageant fuels Trinidad to strive even harder as she aims to carve her own success story next year.   "2018 proved to be a year of success for the Philippines. I am drawing inspiration from that success as I open a new chapter in 2019. Like them, I am not giving up. I will be back stronger than ever,” she vowed......»»
