New York Fashion Week: On holiday with Michael Kors, shivers from Altuzarra
A holiday air with Michael Kors, shivers from Altuzarra, and Tory Burch asserting herself in a spectacular setting: New York Fashion Week expressed its diversity on Monday, the fourth day of the spring-summer 2024 shows. On vacation with Kors American designer Michael Kors took the audience on vacation at his spring-summer show, with Brooklyn's Domino Park, along the East River, transformed into a seaside promenade under the eyes of actresses Blake Lively and Halle Berry. "I can't take you all to Capri, so I can take you to Brooklyn," the 64-year-old Kors said smiling, referring to the Italian island. Models showcased light outfits embroidered with lace, a mini-skirt and blouse set, short dresses and pants paired with small tops in the brand's first show since the announcement that its holding company Capri would be purchased by Coach parent company Tapestry. A loose sweater in cashmere and cotton drops to just below the beltline, leaving the wearer's legs completely uncovered -- a nod to the recent "no pants" trend, maybe, or perhaps something more practical: "You can wear it in the heat. You can wear it when it's cool... We all know that the world has gotten too warm," Kors said. "We are increasingly dealing with, 'How do we get dressed?' Particularly when it's too warm outside, and in (the) office, it's too cold and we're freezing." Everything was in keeping with the vacation vibe, with flat sandals, and an artisanal, hand-woven wicker basket bag in a nod to the recently deceased singer and style icon Jane Birkin. "A British woman living in France, who had this very casual, laid-back attitude," said Kors. "I actually think it was very American." Shivers at Altuzarra The atmosphere took a darker turn at the Altuzarra show, held in the Manhattan Central Library under a high dome with opaque windows. French-American designer Joseph Altuzarra drew on Roman Polanski's timeless horror classic "Rosemary's Baby" for inspiration, creating a dark setting accompanied by ominous music. The collection gives pride of place to slip dresses worn under long jackets, and matching sets were transformed with crinkled satin and undone seams. Short tulle overlay dresses were covered with a transparent organza veil, reminiscent of a doll. With this collection, Altuzarra wrote in the show notes, he wanted to exude "a haunting, enigmatic allure, while anchored in everyday style and pragmatism." Tory Burch asserts herself "In a world of chaos, I wanted a little bit of calm. But I didn't want to be minimalist," Tory Burch said after her show, held in a grandiose setting under the roof and between the undulating granite facades of a new atrium at the American Museum of Natural History. She stepped up the experimentation: ultra-short skirts worn under a parka or a collarless blazer in futuristic shiny purple, with tinted glasses. Among the most original pieces of the collection, there is a cape and dress set in knitted viscose which ends in rounded reliefs. The fabrics are light, but they create structure. Like her other dresses, they are cut diagonally above the knees and leave one shoulder uncovered. The American designer said she wanted to take items like corsets "that were restrictive to women in the past and reclaim them and make them part of beautiful femininity". Why envy when life is beautiful
The Oxford Dictionary defines envy as “a feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else’s possessions, talents or luck.” [caption id="attachment_172881" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Write about your feelings. | Photograph Courtesy Of Unsplash/prophsee-journals[/caption] I agree with Oxford, but I would like to add that envy is the desperate feeling of wanting what you do not possess like talents and attributes that creates hostility and depression. Malicious envy is normally associated with negative emotions towards the target of comparison. While benign envy is normally associated with positive emotions towards the target of comparison. While we can see that envy can create chaos in the lives of those who envy and puzzlement on the side of the party being envied, it also has a positive side to it as it can motivate persons to better their aspirations by improving themselves in the areas where they are weak to achieve success. We know that envy is a normal human response when it propels a person to further improve himself or herself. It becomes harmful only when the person becomes obsessed to the point of wanting to harm the envied person. Even the Bible admonishes us to be guided, 1 Peter 2: 1-3 and I quote, “Therefore get rid of all ill will and all deceit, pretenses, envy and slander. Instead, be like a new born baby, desire the pure milk of the word. Nourished by it, you will grow into salvation since you have tasted that the Lord is good.” Envious people normally feel stressed and overwhelmed as they always feel the need to be better, smarter, richer, or more gifted. Most persons avoid envious people because they become emotional vampires who suck our energy and make us feel so inadequate. The result of which envious people are avoided by many and they have fewer friends. How do we prevent envy? Assess your attributes and if you feel inadequate, work to improve yourself. Journal your envy. Ask yourself why you envy and feel the need to compete with another person. Write about your feelings, own your fears and inadequacies. Once you write about your envy pattern, it will reveal many facets of yourself that will surprise you. This process of catharsis will also heal you and enable you to become better and more accepting of yourself. Share your feelings of envy with someone you trust who only has your best interests at heart like a qualified coach, a psychologist, or a mentor. Listen to the advice and observe how it impacts on your life. Be a realist. Be happy with who you are. Compliment others for their talents. Ask them to be your mentor. Take on a grateful heart. Thank God first, your family second. They who love you for who you are, warts and all. Thirdly, your true friends. You will know who they are through time. This journey of healing to eradicate envy will take time. But with a resolute and firm resolve to change, nothing is impossible. Truly life is beautiful, and it only becomes more beautiful with the way we view life. The post Why envy when life is beautiful appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Malunggay ice cream for lactating mothers
As mothers dive into breastfeeding, this path is filled with triumphant moments and challenges. They’re not alone on this journey as Fog City Creamery offers a delicious helping hand -- lactation ice cream with malunggay. UNICEF Philippines’ 2017 data highlights the importance of early breastfeeding initiation, with an encouraging 57 percent of infants being breastfed within the first hour after birth. This initial support is crucial for both mothers and babies. However, the numbers dip to around 34 percent for continued exclusive breastfeeding from zero to six months. This disparity underscores many mothers’ challenges in maintaining exclusive breastfeeding, such as managing low milk supply and work demands. “We partnered with Vpharma and used its Mega -Malunggay and Herbilogy products to formulate our lactation ice cream flavors, enriched with galactagogues, such as fenugreek, oats, malunggay and malt, to enhance milk production, and achieve breastfeeding goals,” Edy Gamboa-Liu, managing director of Fog City Creamery, said. Beyond nourishment, Fog City Creamery’s lactation ice cream is a gesture of self-care. You are taking a moment for yourself amidst the beautiful chaos of motherhood, as every spoonful is a celebration of your dedication to your baby and a tribute to the incredible bond you’re building through breastfeeding. Fog City Creamery’s lactation ice cream flavors are Mega-Malunggay, Herbilogy Breastfeeding Milk Tea and Herbilogy Choco Malt Oat Praline with Fenugreek. These are available at P1 Power Plant Mall in Makati City or by order via 0917 883 3344 or fogcitycreamery@gmail.com. First lady Liza Araneta Marcos promotes inclusivity in phl arts and crafts
Patronage of the arts and promotion of Philippine culture are two endeavors that have always been the domain of Philippine First Ladies. The approach, of course, varies, whether through the presentation of Filipino folk dances and fashion shows featuring Filipiniana designs during state dinners, showcasing the best of the Philippine arts on the walls of Malacañang Palace or highlighting Philippine crafts in during international expositions. When the presidential couple visits other countries, they bring with them gifts of Philippine crafts for the kingdom’s monarch and their escort or the republic’s president and his first lady. Presidential wives, too, have always been the foremost models of Philippine costume, which they wear during state visits abroad, formal functions at the presidential palace and when attending big events such as raising the Filipino flag in Rizal Park on Philippine Independence Day. Liza Araneta-Marcos, almost in all activities that she graces, whether right in the Palace or outside, wears a knee-length version of the terno, its butterfly sleeves defining its uniqueness and versatility. With her, terno has become an almost everyday get-up, which she accessorizes with heeled shoes, mostly Marikina-made. Cultural mapping The current First Lady’s support for arts and crafts and her involvement in cultural development manifested early on in her public life when her husband was the governor of Ilocos Norte in the early years of the millennium. Right in her husband Bongbong’s home province, she spearheaded efforts in the documentation of Ilocano culture. Under her auspices, a full-scale cultural mapping of Ilocos Norte took place. Then a new thing in the country, its aim was to list and document everything about the inherent culture of each barangay — songs, dances, oral and written literature, zarzuela and other dramatic forms, crafts using indigenous materials, historical sites, architectural marvels including ancestral houses, native delicacies and festive fare, musical instruments, gardens, parks, tourist spots and, of course, the people who make these things happen and exist — the weavers, painters, cooks, writers, local historians, harpists and so on in the vast field of arts, culture and heritage. It was trailblazing in that only years later would local government units be required to identify their cultural assets and provide the data needed for development, especially in education, tourism and creative industries. Eager to know more about her husband’s home province and absorb its culture, she even joined the team in its fieldwork in the seashore towns like the Pagudpud coastline and the highland town of Adams which they reached by riding a dump truck. Among the highlights of her undertakings for heritage tourism was her support for the Museo Ilocos Norte, which housed artifacts and the local textile, inabel. Most significantly was her commitment to the revival of the local weaving industry that produces the exquisite inabel. In an interview, the young and smart wife of the governor said, “I was looking for a viable project that would help boost the livelihood of the Ilocano, one that was low-key, which was not difficult to fund and uniquely Ilocano.” According to Liza, “Ilocano women love multi-tasking.” She explained that in the past, each home would have a loom, “so the mothers could weave while doing their home chores, including taking care of the baby.” Indeed, well spoken by a career woman who, while lawyering, made sure she was at the top of her family home and the care of her children. What she was telling them was it was possible to earn one’s livelihood while fulfilling one’s duties as a homemaker and parent. She thus advocated for the putting up of weaving centers where the young Ilocano may learn the craft. Embroiderers, woodcarvers and basket makers Fast forward to 2016, Liza joined the Board of Trustees of the Asian Cultural Council which fosters cultural exchange and unity by widening the exposure, knowledge and expertise of individual artists, scholars and art professionals. All her years spent on supporting Ilocano crafts had not only been beneficial to the local weavers. It also became a model, a small-scale version of what she would eventually achieve from her day one as First Lady. This time, she would widen the scope of her advocacy by supporting as well the other crafts in the regions. In Feburary 2023, the Office of the First Lady, in cooperation with the Office of the Social Secretary of Malacañang, other government agencies and private creative industry practitioners put together an exhibition that introduced the talented weavers of the country. It was a success as it showcased the best of Philippine weave from the Ilocos region to Laguna, Aklan and Zamboanga. A few months later, she expanded the project to “Likha” to showcase not only talented weavers — but also our skilled embroiderers, basket makers, woodcarvers, pottery makers and shell craftsmen,” among other Filipino artisans in cities, shores and hinterlands of our beautiful country. Community of artisans Hers was a most welcome support to the local artisans and craftsmen, anthropology scholars, tourism workers and educators. Dr. Marygrace Ac-ac, an associate professor of De La Salle College of Saint Benilde, who accompanied her father, Paete master sculptor Luis Ac-Ac, shared her thoughts about the First Lady, who spoke at the opening ceremonies of the three-day exhibit. [caption id="attachment_163255" align="aligncenter" width="1600"] First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos with master sculptor Luis Ac-ac and his daughter Marygrace.[/caption] Marygrace said, “What impacted me the most about the First Lady’s speech is her promise to support talented Filipinos and the traditional crafts, which is in keeping with the words of President Bongbong Marcos in his first State of the Nation address. It was, to me, giving hope to the industry and to Filipino artists and artisans. I am happy that she herself said she is looking forward to “Likha” 3, 4, 5 and so on. “Beyond the First Lady’s support for livelihood among the local communities, just as important is that, through the “Likha” exhibitions, she is fostering a national community of artisans, which cultivates a sense of cultural identity among our people. Moreover, this gives us national pride as through the First Lady’s initiatives we are able to show to the world what we are capable of creating.” Of her father, the master craftsman Luis Ac-ac, she said, “he is grateful to the First Lady for her initiative and for spearheading the advocacy to uplift the traditional crafts of all the artists and artisans.” Goldenberg fashion series On her new home grounds, the Malacañang compound, the First Lady has imprinted her passion for heritage through the renovation of three iconic structures, long out of use and run-down Teus Mansion, which is now the presidential museum containing memorabilia of past presidents; Bahay Ugnayan, which houses memento of President BBM; and the Goldenberg Mansion, which the First Lady has designated as a venue for cultural and artistic events. All three are now open to the public for free. Last May, the Goldenberg Fashion series started with a fashion show featuring the creations of Puey Quiñones, who collaborated with weavers, embroiders and artisans, thus elevating Filipino style as he used them in his interpretation of the modern terno, suits and barong for men. [caption id="attachment_163256" align="aligncenter" width="928"] With designer Puey Quiñones at the Goldenberg Mansion fashion show.[/caption] Next was Avel Bacudio’s “Avel,” which, in turn, was a spectacle in black and white as the designer paid tribute to the handiwork of Filipino artisans all over the country, his creations manifesting virtuosity even as he downplayed extravagance and over-the-top ornamentation by focusing on well-defined structure, casual elegance, comfortability and versatility, the last allowing the wearers to mix and match to suit the occasion. In a way, the whole collection resonates with the overall style of the First Lady who has insisted on simplicity, function and comfort in her wardrobe, while now and then showcasing the innate artistry of the Filipino through indigenous textiles. Finally, when we celebrated the nation's Independence Day, with the President and the First Lady hosting a vin d’honneur in Malacañang Palace, the various lady ambassadors assigned to the Philippines attended in their most beautiful and exquisite Filipiniana, thanks to the First Lady who made the collaboration between top Filipino designers and the ladies possible. It was an evening that did not only enhance the beauty and charm of the lady ambassadors, but also made our designers proud. Indeed, our artisans and fashion designers, as well as performing artists, are fortunate to have a friend, ally and benefactor in a First Lady whose sense of nationalism combined with her heartfelt admiration for Filipino ingenuity has made her the best ambassador for Filipino craftsmanship and artistry. Liza Araneta- Marcos: A refreshing perspective on the First Lady’s role
When Liza Araneta-Marcos’ husband, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, was elected President of the Philippines, many wondered how the incoming First Lady would play her role, given that the first Mrs. Marcos, First Lady from 31 December 1965 to 25 February 1986, had, for ages, loomed large on the Filipino consciousness. Imelda had been described as Ferdinand Marcos’ secret weapon whose popularity contributed immensely to his winning the presidential election. Whether true or not, Imelda Marcos went on to capture the hearts and imagination of the Filipino people as she wowed them with her numerous projects, including the mammoth Cultural Center of the Philippines, even as it also served as fodder for the critics of her husband’s administration. Fast forward to the presidential election of 2022 — what people saw was a Bongbong who chose to fight his detractors by ignoring them. He focused instead on rebuilding a nation that needed to be united if it must overcome the challenges brought by the recent pandemic, not yet totally eradicated despite the wonders of immunization at the time he was about to take his oath of office. It was the right campaign strategy, for it promised renewal and, more importantly, a break from the past. That Ferdinand Marcos Jr. won the presidency, despite losing in his bid for the vice presidency in the previous national elections, confirms that a large segment of the voting population saw in him the answer to the many ills of our nation. Beautiful and fragrant First Lady On the day of the inauguration, Imelda Marcos sat quietly, almost stoically, on the stage, her face showing hints of a smile, and obviously preferring to be a low-key mother, and not as the fabulous Imeldific that had been her trademark because, as she claimed in her heyday as a Human Settlements Minister, “The Filipinos want their First Lady to be beautiful,” which also meant fragrant and, well, bejeweled and dressed to the nines. [caption id="attachment_161345" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] MELDA Marcos, the quietly proud mother at her son Bongbong’s presidential inauguration. With them is First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos. | ted aljibe/agence france-presse[/caption] Her detractors would say there was so much hunger and poverty, and here she was as though oblivious to the realities of Filipino life. Imelda Marcos was a voice culture student and an education graduate, the president of the student council of her college, the Rose of Tacloban and a Miss Manila wannabe who, when she came crying to the swashbuckling mayor, was given the title of Muse of Manila. Imelda Marcos, from day one, was a great beauty and was fated to live her life in an aquarium for neighbors and the public to ogle. Interestingly, amidst the simplicity and humility of circumstances that she experienced in her childhood, she lived close to Malacañang, the stately presidential home which, she did not know then, would become her home for 20 years. In the meantime, her father, distraught by the loss of his second wife, Imelda’s mother, and financially strapped, brought his family home to Tacloban. Here, the young Meldy would blossom into such an attractive lass, one rich Chinese businessman wanted to marry the young girl who he thought was old enough to be his wife. Imelda, early on, could sing like a nightingale and, as she herself related, impressed General Douglas MacArthur with her voice. And because of her, Irving Berlin composed the song, “Heaven Watch the Philippines,” after he heard her sing “God Bless the Philippines” to the tune of his composition, “God Bless America.” Feisty and no-nonsense lawyer Now comes a feisty, no-nonsense lawyer, who is related to the very rich Aranetas, owners of the vast Cubao commercial center. The daughter of a handsome “crush ng bayan” basketball player known in his heyday as “twinkle toes” because he pranced around the court like a good dancer, she grew up sheltered, in a manner of speaking. She attended the Ateneo de Manila for both her undergraduate and law studies. Since she preferred to be low-key, she was not as well-known as her Araneta cousins, including the more famous Mar Roxas and Gaita Fores. Her mother being a Cacho makes her “royal” on both sides of her family and somehow related to the Cojuangcos, her mother’s sister, Sari, having married Pedro, the eldest brother of Corazon Cojuangco Aquino. How exactly does one regard Liza Marcos-Araneta? And how does she differ from Mrs. Marcos who impressed me while she was on the dance floor tripping the light fantastic and oh so gracefully and astoundingly, doing the tango and chacha with an equally magnificent Pepe Oledan, who later became our ambassador to Spain? [caption id="attachment_161347" align="aligncenter" width="1520"] ‘Liza knows how to put a group, a team together, find good people, put them in the right place, motivate them properly, and she’s always been good at that.’ | PHOTOGRAPH COURTESYOF FB.COM/LIZA MARCOS[/caption] Like an old friend The first time I met Imelda Marcos face to face, I had been sent to her Pacific Plaza home by my boss, socialite and future legislator Baby Arenas. As soon as I was ushered into Mrs. Marcos’ living room, she stood up and said, “Oh, Jojo, it’s nice of you to come.” It was all that she needed to say to make me glow and feel important. It was said that Imelda remembered names, but meeting her for the first time up close and here she was speaking like she had missed an old friend, wow, I felt like I was on top of the world. When I was a teenager, in 1973, Renata Tebaldi and Franco Correli, opera singers of world-renowned, had flown into the country to perform. I attended their concert at the Araneta Coliseum which shook to the rafters when their voices reached their highest crescendo. I was mesmerized by this electrifying performance when, all of a sudden, as I was seated in the back row of the orchestra, flashbulbs popped at my back, making everyone turn around, and lo, there was Imelda Marcos, radiant, beautiful and glowing, smiling charmingly and looking straight at the stage. She had the whole world at that moment to herself. How, tell me, could I forget my first sighting of the iron butterfly? [caption id="attachment_161344" align="aligncenter" width="2560"] THE First Family at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland held in January this year. | PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF FB.COM/LIZA MARCOS[/caption] Voice of reason Fast forward to 2022, Bongbong Marcos took to the hustings and easily won over his opponent by an overwhelming majority of 58.77 percent or more than 31.6 million votes, and in the election that brought in the fastest result in all of the nation’s political history. How exactly did Liza contribute to her husband’s win, the victor himself shared, “Liza knows how to put a group, a team together, find good people, put them in the right place, motivate them properly, and she’s always been good at that.” Not surprisingly, given her credentials or qualifications, if that may be said of the First Lady of the land. A lawyer who took her post graduate studies in Criminal Procedure at New York University, a professor at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, St. Louis University and Mariano Marcos State University, media described her as “a significant voice of reason in the campaign.” If Ferdinand Marcos Sr. had a “secret weapon who sang and wept before crowds” in Imelda Romualdez Marcos, President BBM had an “expert lawyer with extraordinary skills in organization and logistics management” in Liza Araneta-Marcos. Cool, Chic and Comfortable Fashion
By Jocelyn Valle and Ann Jenireene Gomez Ralph Lauren is easily one of the most mispronounced designer labels around. For the record, this American icon of fashion is pronounced this way: “Ralf LO-ren,” according to Martin Elmer Santos, the manager of Ralph Lauren’s Polo brand boutique at Greenbelt 5. That’s right, not the French-sounding “Ralf Lo-Rahn.” [caption id="attachment_160185" align="aligncenter" width="853"] AUBREY Miles and Troy Montero.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_160186" align="aligncenter" width="1703"] Kieza Garra and Jeanette Ong.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_160188" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] (FROM left) SSI Group Inc. president Anton Huang, Maricel and Donny Pangilinan, Nikki Huang, Ella and Anthony Pangilinan.PHOTOGRAPHS courtesy of Polo Ralph Lauren[/caption] Santos spoke to Daily Tribune at the store’s recent opening. “We have the different collections here,” he said. Aside from its signature Polo Shirt, which has been around since 1972, Polo Ralph Lauren Men’s line presents several collections to check out in Spring/Summer 2023. There’s the timeless collection called Heritage Icons, as inspired by The Hamptons’ preppy fashion. Another one, The Curator, is a refined sportswear merged with Manhattan’s Gallery tastemakers’ sophisticated gallery look. The Summit collection reinvigorates the Active line with archival styles and technical performance, while the Key West line displays a relaxed island lifestyle. Lastly, a diverse collection of vibrant seasonal fashion is showcased in the South America range. It suits perfectly in warm weather and blends well with exotic adventure vibes. Polo Ralph Lauren Women’s line, on the other hand, has a Spring/Summer 2023 collection that covers Mediterranean, California Modern and Laurel Canyon themes of undeniably timeless and classic style. Likewise not to be missed is the Polo ID collection, which showcases handbags, footwear and other leather goods that embody elegance and comfort. Star-studded affair The opening of the Greenbelt branch (the first at Shangri-La mall and soon at Rustan’s Makati and Solaire), was attended by some of the notable celebrities in the fields of fashion, beauty pageants and show business. They looked cool, chic and comfortable in Polo Ralph Lauren fashion pieces. Actor Maricel Laxa turned up with her husband Anthony Pangilinan, a media practitioner and management consultant, along with their daughter Ella Pangilinan and, later on, with their son, matinee idol Donny Pangilinan. “I want something comfortable and easy to carry. I don’t want anything elaborate. I’m a little bit stylish now because I have kids who are more exposed to fashion.” Aubrey Miles, also an actress and entrepreneur, came at the event with her husband and fellow celebrity Troy Montero. She had this to say on dressing up: “As long as it looks good on me and it flatters my body, I go for that. I’m more stylish when I go out alone. When I’m with Troy, I’m more on the sexy side. With our kids, just a long dress with pockets or with a sling bag.” For his part, Montero said, “I just always want to be comfortable. I think my fashion sense changed over the years. I’m definitely more into comfort than anything else. Once you feel good and comfortable, you can be confident walking around. Nothing makes you more uncomfortable and less confident if it’s not fitted. I like to keep up with the trends and things like that. Like today, I’m wearing this Polo shirt, and I kinda went for the one with a little bit non-traditional.” More actors talked to us about their fashion sense. Max Collins described her fashion sense as “laidback chic.” She explained, “I always wear something that I can move in, but at the same time it’s classic and simple. I love neutral colors as well.” Sofia Andres said she goes for “classic, simple and chic at the same time,” even when she's with her three-year-old daughter. “I only wear pants, shirts, sometimes a coat, blazer, that’s it. That looks amazing.” Young star Kyline Alcantara admitted letting her moods dictate her fashion choices. “Sometimes I’m into street style. Sometimes I’m into classy, simple. It really depends on my mood. I feel that’s what fashion is. It’s art also, how you describe yourself, what makes you feel confident.” Celeste Cortesi, who was crowned Miss Universe Philippines in 2022, declared, “I like wearing anything, depends on where I go. I just want to be comfortable and chic at the same time.” Fashion model-turned-actress and host Phoemela Baranda noted that having a baby (her second in 20 years) has changed her body type and she works around that. “I try to look whatever suits my body type now and I’m comfortable with. So, I’m comfortable with long dresses. But of course a little updated naman. I update with accessories or a body.” Myrza Sison, former top model and now a speaker, host, journalist and certified executive coach had this to say about her fashion sense: “Minimal effort for maximum impact. “So I believe in style, rather than fashion, and I think the more you know yourself, the more you can have personal style. Otherwise, you’re just gonna try every trend and you won’t really present a strong image to the world.” The post Cool, Chic and Comfortable Fashion appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Garland denies Hunter Biden probe being interfered with
US Attorney General Merrick Garland on Friday denied allegations that the Justice Department interfered with an investigation of President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter. Prosecutors announced earlier this week that Hunter Biden had reached a plea deal on minor tax and gun charges with the US Attorney in his home state of Delaware. Hunter Biden is due to appear in court on 26 July after agreeing to plead guilty to two federal tax charges and admitting to illegally possessing a gun despite having a history of drug use. A whistleblower from the Internal Revenue Service alleged in testimony before the Republican-led House Ways and Means Committee released this week that the Justice Department headed by Garland had slowed the probe into Hunter Biden. Garland, in remarks to reporters on Friday, noted that the US Attorney in Delaware, David Weiss, had been appointed by former President Donald Trump, a Republican. Garland said he personally had given Weiss the authority to continue his investigation into Hunter Biden and “prosecute any way in which he wanted to.” Joe Biden’s son is also facing one count of illegal possession of a firearm. “I don’t know how it would be possible for anybody to block him from bringing a prosecution given that he has this authority,” the attorney general said. “He was given complete authority to make all decisions on his own.” Hunter Biden, 53, is the only surviving child of Joe Biden’s first marriage, which tragically ended in 1972 when his wife and baby daughter were killed in a car accident. Hunter Biden’s business dealings, especially during the time his father was vice president, have been a major target of Joe Biden’s political opponents, and continue to be probed by congressional Republicans. Hunter Biden became a regular focus of Trump’s attacks ahead of the November 2020 presidential election for his work in Ukraine and China. In his memoir, “Beautiful Things,” Hunter Biden insisted he has never done anything unethical and dismissed allegations that he displayed a lack of judgment by accepting a lucrative position on the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma while his father was Barack Obama’s vice president. Under the plea agreement, Hunter Biden is unlikely to face prison time but will be sentenced to probation. According to the charges, Hunter Biden, a Yale-trained lawyer and lobbyist, failed to file his tax returns on time on earnings of more than $1.5 million for 2017 and 2018. In both years, he owed more than $100,000 in taxes on those earnings. Hunter Biden is also facing one count of “possession of a firearm by a person who is an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance.” Hunter Biden has admitted having drug problems in the past and detailed his struggles with crack cocaine in his 2021 memoir, released months after his father took office. Hunter Biden and his wife attended a state dinner at the White House on Thursday for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Asked about his attendance at the event, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said “it is not uncommon for family members to attend events at the White House.” The post Garland denies Hunter Biden probe being interfered with appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Sigma Delta Phi enters new phase with a bang… and a boogie
The invitation said 4 p.m., 27 May, Turf Room at the Manila Polo Club. Bring vaccination cards… and your dancing shoes. For everyone who joined the Sigma Delta Phi Alumni Association Induction of 2023-2025 Board of Directors and Officers — and first At-Home — the last part highlighted an intrinsic characteristic of this sisterhood: The spirit of fun. [caption id="attachment_146583" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Style and substance made up the first At-Home this year for Sigma Delta Phi.[/caption] Indeed, members of this Greek-letter society born in the University of the Philippines converged that Saturday afternoon to witness the induction of the new set of leaders who would take the organization into another phase of learning, growth and service in the next two years. Up the stairs and into the Turf Room, Sigma Deltans gathered, the setting gorgeous with fresh flowers, twinkling lights, a stage set with glittering decorations. And for that extra detail that never fails to thrill, a little gift to each attendee lay by each plate, courtesy of the generous Monalisa “Mona” Lacanlale ’68 — president and chairperson of the Board. [caption id="attachment_146591" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Mona Lacanlale inspires everyone with her plans and programs.[/caption] Her team members, of course, came in full force, never mind the uncertainty of the weather that day. Emcees Nikki de Vega ’97 (1st VP, Chairperson of Membership Committee and Francia Jessica “Bing” M. Roldan ’98 (2nd VP, Chairperson of Education and Culture Committee) went on stage to start the ball rolling. [caption id="attachment_146594" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Hosts Nikki and Bing put some ‘90s pizzazz into their hosting duties.[/caption] Vangie Balba-Abella ’90 (Liaison Officer, Chairperson of Chapter Relations) gave a meaningful prayer. Toward this end, the new Board laid out its goals for the next two years. Along with ongoing projects like digitalization and keeping certain traditions, two major projects will be established. The first is mangrove restoration in selected locations across the country, to be led by Maria Fe “Marife” Recinto ’83 (3rd VP, Chairperson of Social Action and Civics Committee; Environmental Concerns Committee). Feeding programs in each locale will be organized as part of the mangrove sustainability campaign. “Mangroves are very important as they are breeding sites of many sea creatures. What’s more, they help against erosion and are protection against tsunamis. Have you also ever stopped to see the beauty of their roots?” said artist Ofelia Gelvezon Tequi ’59 in a Viber chat. Musical production The second project is closest to the heart of SDP, a Society of Dramatics and Fine Arts. Announcement of a musical production was met with loud applause. “The project on the musical is a long time due, and it will entail a lot of time and work, but this is a great project,” commented Cecille ’74. [caption id="attachment_146586" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Winnie Monsod enjoys a dance.[/caption] SDP Board officers Elizabeth “Ebette” Palma ’68 (Treasurer); Jo Kristine “Kaye” G. Celera 2000 (Corporate Secretary); and Maribel Guevara Cabrera ’75 (Head Executive Officer) led the dancing, though it took not much prodding for fun-loving sisters to join in. “Never saw dancing like this. The entire place was a dance floor. Everyone danced in front, at the sides and back. Those that cannot walk danced!” commented Maribel the next day. “It was something different,” recalled Board president Mona, who made sure every detail was perfect. All 123 guests enjoyed a feast, music and a camaraderie that transcended age and time. Till the next At-Home! Wonderful Taiwan
We have been blessed to be tapped for a familiarization trip to Taipei, Taiwan, together with Cebu’s top travel specialists. The agenda was to check out the city’s hotel accommodations of all kinds, various attractions for travelers of all types and to savor authentic Taiwanese cuisine. Our adventure began when we boarded the newest player in the carrier scene — Starlux Airlines. [caption id="attachment_145559" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Nelson and Baby Dy of Grand Hope Travel, Nelia and Julius Neri of Sunstar, Sheila and Carlos Colmenares of Leisure Travel, Gwen and Jaime Po of Pan Pacific Travel.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_145558" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Janelle Tan of Royal Prince International Travel.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_145555" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Aida Uy with grandson Michael Willroy Uy.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_145557" align="aligncenter" width="520"] Christine Chua, sales specialist of Starlux Airlines and Clarice Nevado of Wander Lanes Travel.[/caption] Luckily for us Cebuanos, Starlux now offers direct flights from Cebu to Taipei, which means shorter travel time that makes the whole holiday timetable much more enticing. A Taiwanese international company founded in May 2018, we admittedly had no personal experience with Starlux Airlines. However, upon boarding, we were instantly welcomed with warm hospitality and the feeling stayed all throughout the journey. Oh yes, the flight left right on schedule — not a minute later! Among the highlights of our visit was the 509m-tall bamboo shaped Taipei 101 skyscraper which leads to an observatory. [caption id="attachment_145556" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Alan Carvajal of Travelways International with son Diego Javier.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_145560" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Sherilyn Balunan of Uni Orient Travel[/caption] [caption id="attachment_145561" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Tara Sy of A & M Travel[/caption] [caption id="attachment_145562" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Zenaida Chua of Worldwide Travel and Tours[/caption] The capital is also known for its cuisine — from revered restaurants to its lively street food centers. The must-try dish is xiao long bao — Taiwan’s gift to the world — a steamed bun traditionally filled with pork and seafood. We even dared to go to the open market to try the fabled stinky tofu. As the name implies, it has a pungent odor. We even spent a few hours at Yangmigshan National Park, where we marveled at the beautiful landscapes, to include ridges, valleys, lakes and rocks that make up most of the area’s geology. Lest I forget, the Taiwan Tourism Board, through its Taiwan Lucky Land Campaign, is giving away over 500,000 vouchers over the course of three years to tourists visiting Taiwan. Each coupon amounts to NTD 5,000 or approximately P9,000 pesos. It is not an empty campaign promise. I was lucky enough to be one of the winners, so I can attest to its authenticity! Louis Vuitton braves rain on its Italian island paradise
Louis Vuitton valiantly battled pounding rain on an Italian island paradise while presenting its cruise collection Wednesday night, the weather sending celebrity guests underneath umbrellas and dampening a hairdo or two. But when you're the flagship brand within the powerhouse LVMH portfolio, with a guest list that includes Catherine Deneuve, Cate Blanchett, and Emma Stone, what's a little rain? Bad weather was likely not top of mind when the storied luxury label led by Nicolas Ghesquiere chose the tiny Isola Bella, a jewel of an island in the azure waters of Lake Maggiore, as an appropriately jaw-dropping venue for its Cruise 2024 collection. But the rain arrived nonetheless, forcing the show originally planned for the island's formal terraced gardens to take place within the baroque Palazzo Borromeo, still owned by the family of the same name whose noble ancestry dates to the 13th century. "It's the one thing Nicolas can't control, is the weather," the editor-in-chief of Vogue Thailand, Ford Laosuksri, told AFP after the show, as guests lingered to sip bubbly while hoping (in vain) for the rain to stop. Laosuksri was wearing a crocheted floral top and sandals -- an endearing if not foolhardy gesture amid the steady rain. "I didn't want to ruin my velvet shoes," he confided. Ghesquiere, Louis Vuitton's artistic director since 2013, sent models through the ornate, high-ceilinged rooms of the 17th-century palazzo in eclectic, futuristic creations for which he is celebrated. Some looks recalled scuba gear adorned with avant-garde ruffling, while others felt like fencers' uniforms, protective with thick quilting over the chest. Fabric was cinched tight like an accordion at the bodice of a sleeveless dress with color blocks in royal blue and yellow gold, imparting texture and movement, while a shiny black dress came with a drawstring neckline that called to mind a popular handbag by the brand. Sweaters became more airy with a translucent stripe at the midriff, while three chiffon gowns cut on the bias -- in dusty pink, sea green and baby blue -- sported exaggerated puffy sleeves worthy of the Edwardian age. "It was beautiful, it was flowy but still powerful," said Philippine actress Heart Evangelista. Louis Vuitton's event was the first-ever fashion show allowed on Isola Bella, a former fishing village transformed by the Borromeos into a sumptuous paradise fit for royalty. Kings, queens, and emperors have been guests at Palazzo Borromeo over the years, including Queen Victoria, Napoleon and Josephine, and even Prince Charles and Princess Diana in 1985. On Wednesday celebrities and influencers from around the world -- including US actress Jennifer Connelly and Felix from K-Pop's Stray Kids -- descended on the island. Trying not to slip, guests took cover under the transparent umbrellas provided by the brand before escaping into the palazzo. Following the show, some guests stood on benches and posed for pictures under the watchful gaze of centuries of Borromeo elders whose portraits line the walls. Cruise collections are designed to offer warm-weather wardrobes for jet-setters lucky enough to escape to sunny locales during the drab winter months. In recent years, they have become destination events, with brands choosing more and more exotic spots to backdrop their luxury looks. Louis Vuitton's show comes on the heels of Dior's, which showed a Frida Kahlo-inspired cruise collection in Mexico City Saturday, and Chanel's earlier this month at Hollywood's Paramount Studios. Katrina Ponce Enrile: A woman worthy of her name
Anyone who had come of age in the late 1970s and the 1980s would surely know about the most famous names and faces of the younger set of the era known for the coming of age of feminism and women’s lib. The 1960s may have ushered in a cultural revolution but it was in the succeeding decades that the cataclysmic events of the decade that was, in the Philippines, would manifest in the ways and attitudes of Filipino women. I mention this phase in our history because I am sharing my thoughts on one woman whom many consider as one of the country’s most powerful, influential and successful. She is Katrina Ponce Enrile. I may not privy to the growing-up years of Katrina Ponce Enrile, and I would not have the advantage of seeing her from the point of view of someone old enough to observe the growth of a child, but as a teenager, I would occasionally read about her and see her on photographs published in newspapers and magazines, although not too frequent. I just knew she was not only well-bred and beautiful in the mestiza sense being the daughter of a striking beauty of a mother (and the granddaughter of a handsome playboy of a paternal grandfather), but that, she too was brilliant. I would assume that she got her brains from her father, one of the wonder boys of the Marcos administration. Katrina would, in time, be mentioned in juicy gossip now and then, but it was her smarts in enterprise and management that she would eventually be recognized, this notwithstanding the controversial stories that one occasionally heard of her family members. [caption id="attachment_134172" align="aligncenter" width="525"] KATRINA Ponce Enrile has always lived up to her parents ‘ expectations.[/caption] ‘Treat everybody with respect’ But to imagine her childhood and teenage years, one would suppose that for all the comforts that she might have enjoyed while living first in Urdaneta and then Dasmarinas Village, she had had to assert herself, she had once been overheard to say: “At 10, I had to fight a little bit harder to be heard” -- which was expected if one were the only daughter of a famous lawyer of a father and a lovely talented mother, herself a respected stage actress. But no matter that she had to deal with being the daughter of awe-inspiring parents, what she had been showered with, aside from her parents’ affection, was well-meaning advice. For one, it was from her dad and mom that she first heard the word of wisdom. “Treat everybody with respect — everybody. Because you don’t know what fate will bring you or them. People that you meet when you are going up, you also meet when you are going down.” No wonder that years later, as a businesswoman, she was very thoughtful in making decisions whether she was dealing with other top businessmen, her executives or the employees who served the family company at her beck and call. “I always think of how my actions and decisions would affect others,” she said in an interview with the Daily Tribune Lifestyle. No, for all the feisty woman that we know her to be, Katrina, was not advised to be aggressively pro-active when facing a conflict. The legendary Juan Ponce Enrile, instead, cautioned his daughter: “Never throw the first punch. But if they throw the first punch, then…” This, she would take to heart whenever she had had to face corporate, social or emotional bullies, not that she is one to attract people prone to violating her rights. [caption id="attachment_134173" align="aligncenter" width="525"] As the only daughter of Juan Ponce Enrile, the most famous native son of Cagayan, Katrina brings to her new job an affection for the province and Cagayanos and the whole Cagayan Valley.[/caption] One imagines her father might have preferred her to be a boy, JPE being a man’s man, but to which she would have retorted: “Dad, I don’t have to be a boy to be what I am now… Girls can do it too.” Call it outright confidence, or chutzpah, or maybe it’s Pinay pride, but Katrina is not one to be cowed. And yes, she could lead and fight and attack, but as her father would most likely say: “Only if they attack first.” Self-assured executive What I have heard of Katrina, especially from my dear friend, Carol Mercado, who was her classmate at St. Paul College, is her signature confidence. “From our youth, when she could be stubborn, she has matured steadily into a self-assured executive no wonder that she has accomplish much as an entrepreneur. “It’s a paradox that while she may have been underestimated at times and even flat out rejected, she knows how to overcome these challenges because she is one creative person and she is not one to easily bow down or to say no. But then, she is not even outright assertive. She could be very charming and before any nemesis would know it, she has gotten what she wants without lifting a finger.” It would seem that the lady would have aimed for political eminence, being the daughter of the powerful JPE, but to everyone’s surprise, she had chosen to create a name outside of her inherited box (or confines), so to speak. While she takes pride in being an Enrile, she has not taken advantage of her family name as though an amulet that would do wonders for her. Instead, she has chosen to rely on the old-fashioned values of industry, respect for others, commitment and determination. She might as well be girl scout, except more courageous, daring and trailblazing. Flexing her risk-taking muscles In her 20s, when her friends were disco dancing, she was, to use another friend’s words, “flexing her risk-taking muscle and sharpening her foresight for the first time — pivotal experiences that would shape her business sense now admired by many.” She surprised everyone when, at 26, she bought properties in Palawan. “It was a big joke to many,” she recalled. “They could not see any reason I should take the risk and invest in a place where no one dared go. It was then no man’s country and perceived to be mosquito-infested.” Today, Palawan is a safe haven from the pandemic, and, of course, an investors’ paradise. On the other hand, her parents saw a promise in her, someone who would play a key role in the family enterprises. They appointed her as Group Treasurer even before her 30th birthday, and with it the added role of overseeing the many concerns of the JAKA Group of Companies. It is quite a daunting responsibility given its extensive industrial reach –- food manufacturing and product distribution to marketing and logistics; forest plantation management; safety match manufacturing, property management and development; as well as IT, security and financial services. It would seem that, for a “beginner” in the big league, it was beyond Katrina’s grasp, and yet she lived up to her parents’ expectations. [caption id="attachment_134175" align="aligncenter" width="525"] SOME of Delimondo’s best products.[/caption] In time she would qualify as the firm’s COO and eventually CEO. Not one used to trumpeting her achievements, Katrina candidly shared: “I was able to turn around the company, helping navigate it through the debilitating Asian Financial Crisis in the mid-1990s. And when the peso devalued in 2008 to 2009, when we had [a] one dollar denominated loan which I had to quickly deal with, I was able to restructure our company and keep it afloat.” Soon, she would be trusted to manage JAKA’s investments, which “allowed me to dream of bigger things, this in the midst of an economic crisis and the pressure to survive it.” Her baby Delimondo When shopping in a supermarket or a grocery, the Filipino consumers, especially those who take their corned beef seriously, would pick the Delimondo brand. They would also put the brand’s Bolognese Pasta, Luncheon Meat, Yellowfin Tuna spreads and aromatic oils in their cart or shopping bags. Katrina confides, “Delimondo was my baby and was purely our family’s venture.” Her was a one-woman team that managed the brand’s marketing, sales and R&D. To introduce it to the market, she gave away cans of their initial recipes for free. “I wanted to offer something deliciously different, one that I enjoyed from my travels abroad.” [caption id="attachment_134174" align="aligncenter" width="525"] SHE is most proud of her baby, Delimondo.[/caption] It wasn’t long before investors would come in too aware that Delimondo operates its own plants that produce and package its own products. The company would soon expand and offers its manufacturing services to other products all the way to exporting them. In time and with Katrina at the helm, JAKA shifted to investing in other companies. But if her JAKA performance is impressive, anyone should take a look at her other achievements. To cite one, as the Philippines Overseas Telecommunications Operations director and CEO/president. She led the efforts to renew the company’s franchise that would allow it to provide the Philippines satellite services. For another, as director and president, she has brought into the Montemar Resorts Development Corporation and Montemar Beach Club Inc. not only her management expertise, but her exposure to top international resorts as a frequent guest. No wonder that Manila’s well-heeled consider these resorts as standard-bearers of local luxury travel. [caption id="attachment_134171" align="aligncenter" width="525"] ‘Delimondo was my baby and was purely our family’s venture,’ said Katrina.[/caption] Transforming the upper east corner of Luzon Katrina also sits as the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority’s vice chairperson. In this role, she envisions making the province a model destination that easily rivals the country’s capital. “They’re considering appointing me as administrator. Once that post is confirmed, I will be fully committed to transforming the upper east corner of Luzon into another business area that the Philippines will be proud of.” As part of her vision, she plans to build a stronger point of economy with the available freeport and expand its potential by constructing an airport. To attract investors, she plans to boost incentives to encourage more players to relocate. “We plan to make smart cities there. I plan to make it very green. I plan to protect the lush forests. It’s really also known as the rice granary of the Philippines. I plan to push the transition from GMOs (genetically modified organism) to non-GMOs. I know that that will be a hard task but I plan to do it. I want to give the Filipinos healthy food for the next generations to come,” she states. Worthy and deserving As the only daughter of the most famous native son of Cagayan, Katrina brings to her new job an affection for the province and Cagayanos and the whole Cagayan Valley. She may have grown up in Manila, travelled the whole world, but her heart has always remained in the home of her father, Juan Ponce Enrile, and it is among his people, relatives and townsmen that she intends to pursue her next dream. There is no stopping this feisty Cagayanon. For her home province, she is out to conquer the world. But then, I must insist that this is not about being her father’s daughter, although there is no denying the great influence of JPE on Katrina becoming the woman that she has become -- strong-willed, passionate, forward-thinking. Still, Katrina could only thank herself most for being herself. That she accepted the challenges that came her way and faced them head on using her own gifts and advantages – which undoubtedly brought her to her destiny, one that she has arrived at and one that she has yet to fulfill. Indeed, if the women’s movement has reached this far, and women today now enjoy key positions in government, private sector and civil society, this may be attributed to the generations of women who have looked toward the future and embraced their destinies as key players in the affairs of humanity. Katrina is one of these women and we wish her all the best. No one could be more worthy of the challenge and deserving of the honor. Wolfgang Steakhouse Grill opens city of dreams branch, expands menu
The name alone sounds expensive and intimidating, but the owners of Wolfgang Steakhouse Grill swear it’s because they serve only the finest food. Known for its signature USDA prime dry-aged steak, the chain has opened a fourth restaurant in the Philippines with more grilled items on offer — the better to encourage people who love first-rate food and a relaxed atmosphere The new Wolfgang Steakhouse Grill at the City of Dreams Manila in Parañaque City had a grand launch Tuesday night attended by the founder himself, Wolfgang Zwiener, accompanied by wife Elena and son Peter, now the president of the world-renowned Wolfgang’s Steakhouse. The event was also graced by its local managing partners led by Raymund Magdaluyo (Red Crab Group of Restaurants) and Leina Bolinas (Excello Restaurant Management Group). The resto’s other outlets are in Resorts World Manila in Pasay City, Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City and The Podium in Mandaluyong City. This is also the 32nd location of Wolfgang Steakhouse worldwide. What makes this new location extra special is that this is the only Wolfgang Steakhouse with grilled offerings. New grilled dishes have been added to the menu for diners to order from brunch to late night, such as Grilled Barbecue Short Ribs, Dry-Aged Brisket Pastrami, Beef Tartar and Grilled Lemon Caper Chicken. “Wolfgang Steakhouse is a classic steakhouse that serves the finest beef,” said Peter in his brief speech. “Here at the Grill, we are able to introduce more dishes using the different parts of the cow and the various ways of preparing it. This gives us an opportunity to offer those who want to eat other interesting and flavorful dishes, such as Lomo Saltado (a Peruvian dish) and chicken dishes. But, the good thing is, we still offer the regular full menu of Wolfgang Steakhouse.” Peter reflected on how the restaurant has come a long way from its first outlet in Manila in 2016. “Thanks to our fabulous partners like Raymund Magdaluyo and Leina Bolinas and their team,” Peter said. “We were very fortunate. I still remember the day I met Raymund in Japan after he called me to say he had a fabulous dinner at Wolfgang on Christmas Eve. He told me a beautiful story about his family and how they had a great dinner there. He told me he wanted to have Wolfgang Steakhouse in the Philippines. And it came to fruition many years later.” “After the pandemic, we are coming out stronger and we want to grow more rapidly in the Philippines and offer our steaks to everyone,” he added. Elegant, contemporary Boasting an intimate and cozy atmosphere with dark wooden interiors and an old-world charm, the 350-square-meter steakhouse features an intimate whisky lounge and impressive wine cellar. Popular among its steaks are the short loin, porterhouse and rib-eye. “Grill means basically direct fire. We offer more grilled items,” said Magdaluyo, adding that, “for us, the actual concept of the grill is that this place is a bit casual. Upscale but casual. Meaning, you can come as you are. You can wear shorts or beach wear and that’s perfectly fine.” Magdaluyo also shared that another Wolfgang Steakhouse Grill, with a sports grill theme, is opening at the Araneta Coliseum by October. “It’s a 40-seater place to serve the Quezon City market,” he said.
