Solicitation scam for beauty pageant bared
Muntinlupa Rep. Jaime Fresnedi and Mayor Ruffy Biazon have warned of a solicitation scam using a fake endorsement letter for a beauty pageant. Fresnedi, in a Facebook post, said a fake endorsement letter indicating that it came from his office was being used to solicit from business establishments for the “Miss Amazing Philippines” beauty pageant in exchange for a five percent discount when they renew their business permits. The fake endorsement letter certified that a certain Rovic Macariola from Barangay Putatan appeared on 15 September in Fresnedi’s office “with the purpose of seeking permission for the introduction and fulfillment of the candidate requirements for the competition of ‘Miss Amazing Philippines 2023’ pageant.” In a statement, Fresnedi said “The public is hereby warned that Rovic P. Macariola did not appear on the 15th day of September 2023 and sought permission from this Office relative to the requirements for the competition of ‘Miss Amazing Philippines’ 2023 pageant.” The solon added, “Further, Atty. Miguelito Rueda-Gozos who allegedly approved the Certificate of Appearance as a lawyer holding position as a mere Administrative Aide II is not connected with the Office of the House of Representatives of the Lone District of Muntinlupa.” The letterhead used in the fake endorsement letter “pertains to the City Government of Muntinlupa and not to the Lone District and the signature of the undersigned in the Certificate of Appearance was forged.” Fresnedi said, “the public is hereby advised that the Office of Representative Jaime R. Fresnedi did not issue the Certificate of Appearance and that they should not transact with Rovic P. Macariola who made the foregoing false representations in order to solicit donations for the alleged beauty pageant.” Mayor Biazon said the matter is a scam and the city government does not ask money or donation in exchange for a discount. The people of Muntinlupa were strongly urged by Fresnedi to send information and reports of Macariola’s activities to the police for the filing of a complaint against him. Wright Park gets PAGCOR-funded light show
BAGUIO CITY — Visitors of the Upper Wright Park here were treated to a dazzling spectacle after the much-awaited Water Fountain Music and Lights Show was formally inaugurated at the Pool of Pines last 8 September. The city’s newest attraction, whose project concept was approved by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation, was funded by the Bloomberry Cultural Foundation Inc. in the amount of P19 million. BCFI is the corporate social responsibility arm of Solaire Resort and Casino. Baguio’s city government sought the assistance of PAGCOR in the installation of the Water Fountain Music and Lights Show at the Pool of Pines in line with its efforts to breathe new life into the Upper Wright Park while preserving its rich heritage and beauty. According to BCFI Executive Director Filipina Laurena, they readily agreed to partner with the local government of the country’s “Summer Capital” in carrying out the project as they believe in its potential to reinvent the Upper Wright Park’s identity as one of the city’s most visited spots. “Baguio City has always been one of the centers of tourism in the Philippines with its cool climate and scenic attractions. Without a doubt, this Water Fountain Music and Lights will not only add to its charm but also provide every visitor a captivating experience, uniting the harmony of music, the magic of lights and the serenity of the park’s iconic Pool of Pines,” she said. The Water Fountain Music and Lights Show project is part of the casino licensees’ provisional obligation to allot a portion of their revenues to their foundations every month to fund projects related to education, cultural heritage, environment and health. Puerto Princesa steps up to conserve endangered sea turtles
PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan — City Mayor Lucilo Bayron has been given the authority to sign agreements aimed at conserving the population of the critically endangered green sea turtle and designating additional habitat areas within Mt. Cleopatra's Needle. The authority was granted to him through two resolutions approved Monday by the City Council during its regular session. They were presented by their authors, Councilor Jimmy Carbonell. The first measure aims to encourage the participation of the Schools Division Office of the Department of Education (DepEd) in protecting the green sea turtle population along the shores of the city's west coast. "Because the area is within the DepEd premises on the west coast, and they are very much willing to support this program to preserve the wildlife species. This initiative is not limited to the west coast; other areas in Puerto Princesa are also being studied by the Philippine Coast Guard," Carbonell said. The second entails requesting assistance from the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development to designate particular zones in Mt. Cleopatra’s Needle as important habitats for flora and fauna. Carbonell stated that the decision to collaborate for the conservation of Mt. Cleopatra's Needle emerged from continuous discussions about the revitalization of Puerto Princesa's forested areas. Endangered green sea turtles, commonly referred to as pawikan in local terms, confront risks including habitat loss, pollution, bycatch, and poaching while fulfilling a critical role in marine ecosystems by upholding the well-being of seagrass and coral reefs. Conservation efforts center on the protection of their nesting sites and habitats. Carbonell stated that a distinct section of the western shoreline functions as the natural environment for sea turtles, which fall under the safeguarded category of species marked as "critically endangered," as indicated by PCSD Resolution No. 15-521. Mt. Cleopatra's Needle, also known as Cleopatra's Needle, is an iconic mountain located in Puerto Princesa, which is recognized for its unique shape and natural beauty. It is a significant landmark in Puerto Princesa and holds cultural and ecological importance. Local conservation efforts aim to preserve the natural habitat and unique characteristics of Mt. Cleopatra's Needle. The post Puerto Princesa steps up to conserve endangered sea turtles appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Senate adopts reso on WPS harassment
A resolution denouncing China’s intrusion into the West Philippine Sea and its harassment of Filipino fishermen was approved by the Senate on Tuesday. The approval of Senate Resolution 718, authored by Senate President Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri and Senator Risa Hontiveros, came after the Senate held an executive session on Monday with Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo, Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr., and National Security Adviser Eduardo Año, and their senior officials. Members of the Senate, as well as the mentioned officials, discussed Hontiveros’s earlier resolution which urges the national government, through the Department of Foreign Affairs, to elevate China’s incursions in the West Philippine Sea to the United Nations General Assembly. Under the resolution, the lawmakers urged the Philippine government, through the DFA, to “continue asserting” the country’s sovereign rights over its exclusive economic zone. Likewise, the agency was encouraged to “intensify” efforts to engage the international community in upholding its hard-earned victory at the Hague. The Philippines celebrated the seventh anniversary of its historic victory over China in 2016 last month, which solidified Manila’s claims to the West Philippine Sea. China has continued to reject the arbitral ruling and stood by its historic rights over the area. As of 5 July, the Philippine government, through the DFA, has filed a total of 30 diplomatic protests against China in the last seven months. Over the span of three years, Manila has sent a total of 427 notes verbale against Beijing. The resolution also states that the DFA is “expected” to continue holding dialogues with the Chinese government to push for recognition and respect of the Philippines’ sovereign rights over its EEZ and pursue the formulation of the Code of Conduct for the South China Sea based on international law and the UNCLOS. Should China continue to ignore the country’s efforts, the resolution contains actions the agency must do such as bringing international attention to China’s harassment of Filipino fishermen in the Philippine EEZ and its continued violation of the Hague Ruling and the UNCLOS; utilizing international fora to rally multilateral support for the enforcement of the Hague Ruling and raise awareness on the real situation in the West Philippine Sea; and engaging with “like-minded” countries to call on China to respect the Hague Ruling and the UNCLOS. The DFA is also encouraged to file a resolution before the United Nations General Assembly, to call for the cessation of all activities that harass Philippine vessels and violate the Philippines’ established rights in the West Philippine Sea; and pursue other diplomatic modes as the agency may deem appropriate and necessary. ‘Never watered down’ In his manifestation, Zubiri stressed that the resolution filed by Hontiveros was “never watered down,” but instead “strengthened.” “We came out with strong consensus yesterday after the discussions with the West Philippine Sea Task Force, together with the AFP chief of staff General Brawner and DFA Secretary Manalo and actually we never watered down the resolution that we filed, we actually strengthened the first resolution that we initially filed with Senator Risa,” he said. “I think what happened here is we strengthened the position of the government. Now we gave them several options to choose on how to deal with our neighbors in the North,” he added. He continued: “And the beauty of this is with proper consensus and of course consultations among our colleagues we have come out unanimous.” For her part, Hontiveros expressed her gratitude to her colleagues for the adoption of the resolution, which she described as an “important success” for the country. “I would first like to thank all our colleagues for this concerted effort to not only make the West Philippine Sea issue a part of our national conversation but for ensuring that the Philippine government takes the necessary steps to consolidate global support over our historic 2016 Arbitral Award,” she said. “This bipartisan effort tells the Filipino people that when it comes to matters of national sovereignty, we will never be bullied into submission.” The post Senate adopts reso on WPS harassment appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

She continued: “This is an important success not only of the Senate but of the whole Philippines. The Senate crossed party lines to stand unified for our country.” The lawmaker also said that the fight against China’s reckless behavior in the West Philippine Sea “does not end here.” “The fight continues,” she stressed.
