Belga woes piling up
Things are getting rougher for Beau Belga. Rain or Shine extended Belga’s suspension to 15 days after finding out that he also played in other unsanctioned tournaments in Cebu, Davao and Laguna despite having a live contract in the Philippine Basketball Association. In a statement, the Elasto Painters stressed that they found out that Belga breached his PBA Uniform Players’ Contract, prompting them to extend his suspension from six to 15 days. Belga, the bruising 33-year-old slotman, was in hot water after being involved in a brawl in an exhibition game in Carmen, Cebu. The tournament, branded as “Northball Basketball League, pitted some PBA players like Belga, JR Quiñahan, Robert Bolick, and Jio Jalalon against a group of American streetball players. But the game turned into a brawl after Quiñahan got entangled with an American baller during a rebound play. Belga rushed to his teammate’s defense by throwing the ball at his attacker. The incident was caught on tape and drew the attention of the Elasto Painters and the PBA. “Rain or Shine Team Management has concluded its internal investigation and found that Beau Belga breached his PBA Uniform Players' Contract by participating in exhibition games in Cebu, Davao, and Laguna. A fine of 15 days’ worth of salary has been imposed on Beau,” the team said. Meanwhile, the Road Warriors are currently conducting an internal investigation into Quiñahan while the Batang Pier and Hotshots have yet to release a statement on the involvement of Bolick and Jalalon, respectively. According to a league memorandum, a player caught playing in other leagues without permission will be charged P50,000 or suspension. “They didn’t get permission from their teams to play outside the league so there will definitely be fines,” PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said in a previous interview. “Let’s see what happens but I need to talk to them first.” The post Belga woes piling up appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Painters crack whip on Belga
Rain or Shine imposed a six-game suspension on Beau Belga for his involvement in a brawl that happened in an unsanctioned tournament in Carmen, Cebu over the weekend. In a statement, the Elasto Painters said they have decided to suspend Belga for six working days without pay due to the infraction that is considered as a major offense in the professional league. The club said it will conduct further investigations internally. "Rain or Shine team management has suspended Beau Belga for six working days without pay due to his involvement in an unsanctioned basketball game in Cebu,” the Elasto Painters said. “Further investigations will be conducted internally." Together with fellow Philippine Basketball Association players JR Quiñahan of NLEX, Robert Bolick of NorthPort and Jio Jalalon of Magnolia, Belga played against the Sirius Stars, which is composed of a group of American streetball players, in a friendly match at the Carmen Municipal Gym. Quiñahan figured in a rebound battle with a member of the opposing team, who came out swinging with punches. Belga rushed to his teammate’s defense by throwing the ball at his attacker. PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said he will summon the players to his office in the first week of May. He revealed that Belga, Quiñahan, Bolick and Jalalon played in a tourney outside the PBA without permission from their respective teams. "I will call them for a meeting around the first week of May. They didn't get permission from their teams to play outside the league so there will definitely be fines," Marcial said in a phone conversation with Daily Tribune. "Let's see what happens but I need to talk to them first." NLEX head coach Frankie Lim confirmed that Quiñahan acted unilaterally when he joined other PBA players in a trip to his hometown in Cebu. Reports have it that Quiñahan’s contract with the Road Warriors will be terminated but Lim refused to make a confirmation pending the conclusion of their internal investigation. "He didn't ask permission from the team. The management is currently doing an investigation on it and while they're doing that, we just want to keep our mouth shut," Lim said. "We're just waiting for the end of the investigation and after that, we'll say what will happen to him." Player agent Danny Espiritu, for his part, stressed that he will not tolerate the behavior of the four stalwarts, who are all under his stable. “They are my players and I consider them as friends but I don’t tolerate this kind of behavior,” said Espiritu, who handles the careers of around 40 PBA stars. “They didn’t ask permission from me or their coaches. Now that they got involved in a brawl, it’s up to their teams to discipline them. It’s now up to them to impose disciplinary measures.” The post Painters crack whip on Belga appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
PBA players figure in Cebu brawl
Some players from the Philippine Basketball Association are in hot water after being involved in a brawl during an exhibition basketball game in Cebu last Saturday. In a now-taken down social media video, Rain or Shine’s Beau Belga and JR Quiñahan of NLEX were involved in an altercation when the opposing player of the import-laden Sirius Star punched Quiñahan as both big men were trying to position themselves for the rebound. Both squads had to stop the tussle but not before Belga went on to throw the ball at the Sirius Star player. Also present at the venue were Robert Bolick of Northport, Jio Jalalon of Magnolia, Steve Nash Enriquez of National University, and Kyt Jimenez of General Santos, who were teammates of Belga and Quinahan. Unless granted permission by their respective ballclubs, PBA players are forbidden to play in other leagues. Jalalon was already slapped with a suspension along with Vic Manuel in 2020 for playing an unsanctioned game. The memorandum of the PBA on this case merits a minimum fine of P50,000 and/or suspension. The post PBA players figure in Cebu brawl appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Belga stars in OT as Rain or Shine continues good run inside bubble
Beau Belga delivered when it mattered most in the overtime period. (PBA Images) Beau Belga had the last laugh with a stirring performance Tuesday night as Rain or Shine grinded out an 85-82 overtime win over Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center. Belga scored five of his 20 points in the five-minute extension, a follow-up after missing a layup and a three-pointer that gave the Elasto Painters an 83-78 lead, and added 10 rebounds and four assists as the Elasto Painters pulled out a win while handing the Kings a second straight loss following a 4-0 start. But Rain or Shine needed one lucky break to secure its fourth win in five games inside the bubble known as Smart Clark Giga City after Ginebra cut the deficit to 83-80. Jewel Ponferada retrieved the ball after Rey Nambatac slipped before hitting a running one-hander for his only points with five seconds to go to make it an 85-80 lead for the Elasto Painters. Rain or Shine bounced back after falling short against Alaska, 89-88, last week while needing an extra day of rest when Sunday’s game with Blackwater was cancelled due after one of the Elite’s players initially tested positive for COVID-19. No one motivated coming into the game more than Belga, who was out to prove something after seeing a social media comment earlier in the day. “May isang hater na binatikos ako sa social media na puro pananakit lang daw ginagawa ko sa PBA and I just to prove him wrong,” Belga said during a postgame interview on One Sports. Coach Caloy Garcia was also glad that Belga was not the only player to step up for the Elasto Painters. Mark Borboran scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds while James Yap earned a starting role and produced a season-high 13 points. Nambatac only had eight points, but produced one of the game’s biggest shot with a three-pointer that tied the knot at 76-all with 2.1 seconds to go in regulation. Kris Rosales also scored all of his eight points in the first quarter that saw Rain or Shine take a 24-15 lead and forced Ginebra to play catch up throughout. Ginebra had to slowly inch its way back from being down 39-24 in the second behind Stanley Pringle and Scottie Thompson. Pringle’s jumper put the Kings ahead, 74-73, with over two minutes remaining in the fourth before Borboran missed two free throws and Gabe Norwood muffing a medium-range jumper. LA Tenorio got fouled and made a pair of charities for a three-point Ginebra lead before Nambatac continued his knack to have the ball in the clutch with the game-tying triple on the next play. Thompson finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks and Pringle had 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists but Ginebra couldn’t recover from Sunday’s loss to sibling rival Magnolia. The scores: RAIN OR SHINE 85 — Belga 20, Borboran 13, Yap 12, Nambatac 8, Rosales 8, Onwubere 3, Norwood 3, Ponferada 2, Wong 0, Torres 0. GINEBRA 82 — Thompson 21, Pringle 20, Aguilar J. 13, Tenorio 10, Devance 6, Caperal 5, Mariano 3, Chan 2, Dillinger 2, Tolentino 0. Quarters: 24-15, 45-36, 61-57, 76-76 (Reg), 85-82 (OT)......»»
No live audience? No problem: Ginebra still a charmer with massive online turnout
Japeth Aguilar of Barangay Ginebra goes for a dunk. (PBA Images) Barangay Ginebra San Miguel’s drawing power remains evident even in defeat after One Sports once again garnered huge viewership online. Almost 180,000 viewers watched the live broadcast of Ginebra’s 85-82 overtime loss to Rain or Shine on One Sports’ Facebook page a day after TV5’s sports division garnered big numbers during Phoenix Super LPG star Calvin Abueva’s much-awaited return from a 16-month suspension. Abueva’s first game inside the bubble known as Smart Clark Giga City got a live viewership of 120,000 on Monday that saw Phoenix winning over NLEX, 114-110. Tuesday’s game which aired primetime got plenty of viewers late when Ginebra made a run in the fourth quarter to even take a 76-73 lead with seconds to go. But Ginebra fans were left disappointed when Rain or Shine’s Rey Nambatac tied things up with a three-point shot before Beau Belga came through with clutch baskets in overtime to seal the victory. It was Ginebra’s second straight loss after starting the PBA Philippine Cup with four consecutive wins. Ginebra absorbed its first defeat over the weekend with a 102-92 setback to sibling rival Magnolia. The Kings have another marquee game on hand this Friday against the defending champion San Miguel Beermen......»»
‘Muscle Man’ powers Alaska over Rain or Shine
PBA Images Streaking Alaska handed Rain or Shine its first loss Thursday night after escaping with an 89-88 win in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center in Angeles City, Pampanga. Vic Manuel flashed his pre-pandemic form when it mattered, hitting 10 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter as the Aces rallied from being down 75-68 midway in the period before enduring excruciating moments in the end to pick up their third straight victory after a 0-2 start. Jeron Teng had 13 points and eight assists while Abu Tratter and rookie Barkley Ebona added 10 points apiece for Alaska, which has been playing sound basketball following losses to TNT and Meralco. “When things didn’t go our way, we went back to just doing things we know we could do well that is defending and improving that aspect. We felt that would make it easy on the offensive end,” said Aces coach Jeffrey Cariaso. Alaska has limited its opponents to 83.7 points during the three wins, including against Rain or Shine. Manuel’s jumper and a running one-hander gave the Aces leads of 85-80 and 87-83 under the last two minutes, but his clutch shots nearly went for naught when the Elasto Painters gave them a scare. Beau Belga cut the gap to a point 89-88 with 7.3 seconds left, then forced Alaska guard Jvee Casio to lose the ball out of bounds off Teng’s inbound, giving Rain or Shine a chance to steal the game. Rey Nambatac, who came through in the clutch against San Miguel Beer and NorthPort, tried to do it again when he used a Belga pick to go for a driving layup. But Nambatac missed a finger roll against two defenders before time expired. The loss denied Rain or Shine a 4-0 start and a share of second place with idle Barangay Ginebra San Miguel. It also spoiled a career game from Sidney Onwubere, who topscored for the Elasto Painters with 16 points. The former Emilio Aguinaldo College standout was averaging 1.4 points in 20 games last season. Javee Mocon and Adrian Wong, the first Rookie of the Week winner of the PBA Press Corps, added 14 and 12 points for Rain or Shine. The scores: ALASKA 89 — Manuel 18, Teng 13, Tratter 10, Ebona 10, Herndon 9, DiGregorio 7, Brondial 7, Casio 5, Ahanmisi 5, Galliguez 3, Ayaay 2, Marcelino 0. RAIN OR SHINE 88 — Onwubere 16, Mocon 14, Wong 12, Torres 10, Belga 10, Nambatac 7, Norwood 5, Yap 5, Doliguez 3, Rosales 2, Ponferada 2, Rivero 2, Tolentino 0. PBA: Belga avoiding 'bad habits' as he tries to be a better leader for ROS
Big Beau Belga coming in with the big character development. As he hopes to make Rain or Shine's transition to a new era in the PBA relatively smooth, Belga says his leadership style is undergoing some changes. While the Elasto Painters still have a veteran core that includes him, Gabe Norwood, and James Yap, the team also has a pair of future stars in Javee Mocon and Rey Nambatac. ROS likewise has five rookies in its roster. "Hindi ka puwedeng mag set-ng example na masama. Marami kaming bagito eh," Belga said. "Kapag nagsimula ka ng bad habits, baka sabihin ng mga yun okay lang gawin yung ganito kasi ginagawa naman ni Kuya Beau," he added. As he tries to be a better leader for his team, Belga still assures that his status as ROS' resident enforcer is intact. However, he might have to tweak a thing or two in order to avoid paying PBA fines, especially under current circumstances. "Natuto na si Belga, ayaw nang mag-fine. May pandemic, bawal mag-fine," Belga said. "Yung physicality ng laro, hindi magbabago." — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8 .....»»

PBA: Nabong s Pido story has coach asking for a kiss during heated game
Head coach Pido Jarencio is certainly a unique character. Every player he's handled will vouch for him, especially those we were former UST Growling Tigers. Every player will also have his own crazy Pido Jarencio story. One of them is Kelly Nabong, who played for Jarencio briefly in 2018 for the Globalport Batang Pier. Despite the short time they were initially together, Nabong can clearly recall a time that coach Pido pacified him during a heated game against Phoenix. "Last time I was at Northport a couple of years ago, I think I got frustrated in a game once, I think we were playing Phoenix," Nabong told Rain or Shine's Beau Belga on Extra Rice. "I think I was talking to one of the referees and I got hot-headed, as usual sometimes. He grabbed my face and said, 'Kelly! Kiss me, give me a kiss!" Nabong added. Jarencio's surprising request was all that Nabong needed to calm down. [Related: PBA: Return to Northport a positive turn for Nabong after overstaying SMB welcome] The bruising forward, who is back with the Batang Pier this year, adds that the way Jarencio masterfully deals with all the egos in his team makes him a great coach. After all, not a lot of coaches will go ask their players for a kiss mid-game. "Like I can't be mad no more. Okay. Mwah. I'm not mad no more," Nabong said. "That's why I call him a great coach because he knows how to handle every player on that team accordingly," Kelly added. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
Desiderio names 3 PBA players that gave him the 'wow factor'
For incoming second-year guard Paul Desiderio, there are three PBA players who truly gave him the wow factor in the PBA. Blackwater's former no. 4 pick named TNT's Jayson Castro, San Miguel Beer's Alex Cabagnot, and Magnolia's PJ Simon as the guys that stood out to him once he made it to the league following an inspiring UAAP stint with the UP Fighting Maroons. Desiderio made the reveal on Extra Rice with Rain or Shine's Beau Belga. "Unang-una, na-ano talaga ako sa basketball IQ ni coach Alex [Cabagnot]," Desiderio said. "Tapos, si Jayson Castro sobrang bilis. Then si Peter June Simon, yun talaga ginagaya-gaya ko. Talagang idol na idol ko yun, bawat galaw niya," he added. In an on-the-spot scenario, Mr. Atin 'To also named the player he'll start, bench, and cut. Desiderio got pretty logical with the player he was going to cut. "Ang hirap naman. Pero start ko si kuya Jayson, kasi nga best point guard in Asia. Then bench ko si coach Alex," he said. "Syempre pa-retire na rin si kuya PJ, siya na lang cut ko," Desiderio added. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
How Pinoy athletes kept winning during the lockdown
Sporting events may be suspended or canceled, but that won't stop your favorite Filipino athletes from inspiring or entertaining people as they spend their extra time off doing worthwhile activities during the lockdown period. From reaching out to affected communities to learning a new skill, here are what your idols are up to during the community quarantine. 1) Proudly serving the nation as frontliners Some athletes have taken their in-game dedication off the court, as they proudly serve the country as frontliners during the COVID-19 pandemic. MPBL players such as Bacoor City's Eric Acuña and Bacolod-Master Sardines' Jopher Custodio are currently heeding the call as frontliners for the Philippine Army, as well as their fellow soldiers UST women’s volleyball coach Kung Fu Reyes and volleyball star Jovelyn Gonzaga. Pasay Voyager's Dhon Reverente also suited up for the Philippine Navy while his teammate Jesse Bustos is serving in the frontlines in another way, using his camera as a photojournalist for a daily newspaper. 2) Raising funds and holding donation drives Your beloved players continue to exemplify teamwork in these challenging times as they help the dedicated frontliners and affected households in different parts of the country. UST student-athletes joined former Golden Tigresses star Sisi Rondina in auctioning their jerseys for a cause to donate supplies to the frontliners of Barangay Luz in Cebu City. Meanwhile, volleyball legends Alyssa Valdez and Charo Soriano led a fundraiser called "Volleyball Community Gives Back PH," which aims to supply frontliners in the country with PPEs and other essentials—with celebrities like Kathryn Bernardo and Pia Wurtzbach joining their cause. Former DLSU Lady Spikers standout and Creamline utility spiker Michele Gumabao also provided relief packs and gave them personally to the affected communities in Pampanga with the help of the group Your 200 Pesos. 3) No days off for training and getting the gains Leagues and competitions may have been put on hold, but athletes won't be stopped from keeping themselves in tiptop shape. Observing quarantine, ONE Championship's heavyweight champion Brandon Vera took his workout to the forest, preparing for his upcoming bout against Arjan Bhullar, while Team Lakay fighters, such as Eduard Folayang, Kevin Belingon, and Joshua Pacio improvised household materials as gym equipment. National athletes, such as karateka Junna Tsukii, wushu artist Agatha Wong, and Olympic medalist Hidilyn Diaz, did rigorous training sessions at home to keep themselves in form for upcoming tournaments. High-flyer Ricci Rivero also taught his fans some basic dribbling drills to improve basketball handles—as seen in an episode of "Upfront" on LIGA cable sports channel. 4) Unlocking new skills and focusing on fave hobbies Your fave sports idols also overcame boredom by learning new skills and focusing on their favorite hobbies. For instance, DLSU Green Archers guard Aljun Melecio learned to cook scrumptious lechon while taking a time-out from the hardwood. UAAP volleyball champion and national team player Rex Intal also reminded us that he is a dedicated painter with his mixed portrait of Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan, channeling his passion for sports and art into one. And did you know that top local setter Jia Morado is a talented photographer? Check out her Instagram and be amazed by her works. 5) Taking their talents to TikTok Athletes joined the trending TikTok craze as a source of entertainment during the lockdown. Former UAAP stars Kim Kianna Dy and Jema Galanza posted their dance covers of Young Thug's "Relationship," and Deanna Wong took on "The Weekend" dance challenge. UST Golden Tigresses' rookie Imee Fernandez also wowed the TikTok crowd with a pre-workout dance video, which garnered over 600,000 views online. For Ateneo Blue Eagles guard SJ Belangel, TikTok has also been his avenue to overcome his shyness, doing hilarious skits online. 6) Becoming stars online No live sports to entertain the audiences? It's not a problem for these athletes who continue to provide fun content to every sports fan, with the help of ABS-CBN Sports. Catch Shaun Ildefonso as he does an entertaining commentary about everything sports on "SRSLY." Also watch Cherry Nunag’s wacky chikahan with famous athletes in "Kalye Confessions: Stay-at-Home Edition." Lastly, the lockdown won't stop the basketball conversation as Beau Belga chats with your favorite hoop idols online, while still chowing down on their fave treats on "Extra Rice with Beau Belga." Watch all of these on ABS-CBN Sports' Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and YouTube channel. Also stay tuned for more new offerings from the sports arm of ABS-CBN. These athletes have proven they are truly winners in and out of the court. While waiting for live sports to return, you can rewatch the best games of these athletes on LIGA (SD channel 86 and HD channel 183 on SKYCable) and game highlights and special features on ABS-CBN Sports' social media pages and official YouTube account.
