Discipline, road courtesy
How important is discipline? Well, without discipline, there is no order; without order there is chaos. Almost every day that I travel the streets of Metro Manila, there are always motorcycle riders and pedestrians who are not using the roads wisely, the worst of them without road courtesy, without discipline. I wonder how these motorcycle riders were able to get a driver’s License from the Land Transportation Office. These motorcycle riders go out of their lane, weaving in and out of traffic to the point that the driver of a four-wheel vehicle is not able to move on towards its destination for fear that he or she might hit one or two of these stupid motorcycle riders. As for you, motorcycle rider, who told you the right side of the outermost lane of the road is yours exclusively? Most of you do not know how to give way to other vehicles on the road. You are always in a hurry as if you are going to catch a criminal on the road. My goodness, don’t give me that stupid reason — “That is why we bought a motorcycle, to be able to drive as fast as we can” — unmindful of the other road users. Do you not know how to slow down and stop? You should be familiar with the traffic laws in Metro Manila. You guys, including other drivers and motorists, are very lucky I’m out of Traffic Enforcement now, or I might not just give you a Traffic Citation Ticket. Ask those who have been in traffic enforcement a long time who know me and they will tell you how “kind and understanding” I am when it comes to enforcing traffic laws, rules, and regulations. For example, the road sign at an intersection, “This Lane Must Turn Right,” means that if you are turning right from the direction you are facing, you should be positioned in the outermost lane. But it doesn’t mean that you can just turn right, especially when the traffic light is red, whether or not there is a sign that says, “No Right Turn on Red Signal.” You have to be cautious and observe road courtesy. Reckless driving has nothing to do with the speed of the motorcycle or vehicle you are driving. It is the reckless or illegal act itself that you commit that constitutes it. When the traffic light turns “Green” in your direction and there is a road sign that says, “Turn Right Anytime With Care,” you may proceed with caution. These are just a few simple road signs that if you don’t follow them, you will either end up in the hospital or, if not in the hospital, I will be going to your grave to bless you before you are buried. A reminder to motorcycle riders — pedestrian lanes are for people to walk on to cross the road. They are not intended for motorcycles to stop on. As for cyclists, even if it is a “bicycle lane” don’t be stupid and go against the traffic flow in this lane. On the other hand, my dear pedestrians, you are not supposed to walk on the road — use the sidewalk. And some pedestrians do not know how to cross a street or cross wherever and whenever they want to, unmindful of the risks to them. As I always say, to be able to have order in our lives, we need DISCIPLINE. “For God is a God of Order and of Peace.” — 1 Corinthians 14:33. US hiring heats up unexpectedly in May but wage gains ease
Hiring in the United States heated up again in May, according to government data released Friday, with the strong labor market defying expectations of a slowdown amid efforts to cool the economy. The jobs market has been surprisingly robust even as regulators have worked to ease demand and tamp down inflation, with the central bank lifting interest rates 10 times since early last year. While the expectation is that higher rates would slow the economy, with elevated borrowing costs making it pricier to borrow funds for major purchases or business expansion, the latest numbers could prove challenging for policymakers mulling a pause in rate hikes. The United States added 339,000 jobs last month, surpassing estimates and picking up from a revised 294,000 figure in April, said the Labor Department on Friday. The jobless rate ticked up to 3.7 percent, rising from a historically low level of 3.4 percent. But in a more welcome sign, wage gains moderated slightly with average hourly earnings up by 0.3 percent, slightly down from 0.4 percent in April, the report said. "The data show that job growth is continuing at a rapid pace, but wage pressures are not building," said Rubeela Farooqi, chief US economist at High Frequency Economics. Compared with a year ago, average hourly earnings were up 4.3 percent, said the Labor Department. Room for pause Sectors that saw job gains included professional and business services, health care, and construction, said the Labor Department. But although the employment numbers were well above what analysts expected, Farooqi believes the wage data could still give the Federal Reserve room to hold policy steady. Fed policymakers are set to convene in mid-June, and some senior Fed officials have indicated this week that they might support skipping a further hike at their upcoming meeting. A key factor is that officials are eyeing the lagged effects of existing rate hikes as they ripple through the economy while deciding if more action is needed. A particular area of concern is that strong demand for workers and continued wage growth could feed into inflation. But if wage gains are not rising, this could ease pressure on policymakers. "Several Federal Reserve officials have signaled that they are likely to hold rates steady at their upcoming June meeting but are unlikely to reduce rates anytime soon. This somewhat mixed jobs report is likely to support that approach," said Mike Fratantoni, chief economist of the Mortgage Bankers Association.
