Groups assail police checkpoints, surveillance in Southern Tagalog a day before EDSA uprising protest
“This is a clear violation of human rights, especially since the police clearly stated that their actions were for the upcoming anniversary of the EDSA uprising anniversary. Their posturing value of ‘public safety’ is a direct attack on the right to express calls against moves to amend the Constitution, which is the theme of the EDSA anniversary mobilization,” said BAYAN Southern Tagalog. Japan, U.S.: ‘We got your back’
Key allies of the country expressed their unwavering support after a Chinese Coast Guard ship intentionally collided with a Philippine Navy boat to stop a resupply mission to the grounded BRP Sierra Madre on Ayungin Shoal. Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr. described the maneuver as an escalation of China’s aggression within the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines. Japan issued a statement expressing support after the incident. “Japan expresses serious concern for actions which increase regional tensions, including a dangerous action that caused a collision between Chinese and Filipino ships on 22 October,” the Japanese Foreign Ministry said. It added that Japan believes the issue of the South China Sea is directly related to the peace and stability in the region and is a legitimate concern of the international community, including Japan. “Thus, Japan opposes any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force as well as any actions that increase tensions in the South China Sea,” it said. Citing the Japan-Philippines Joint Statement last February, the Foreign Ministry said the “government of Japan concurs with the Philippines’ long-standing objections to unlawful maritime claims, militarization, coercive activities, and threat or use of force in the South China Sea.” “Furthermore, Japan highly appreciates the government of the Philippines for having consistently complied with the arbitral tribunal’s award as to the disputes between the Republic of the Philippines and the People’s Republic of China regarding the South China Sea, and has shown its commitment to the peaceful settlement of disputes in the (West Philippine Sea), as stated in the statement by the Foreign Minister of Japan issued on the occasion of the seventh anniversary of the issuance of the award,” it said. Japan said it would continue to cooperate with the international community, such as the members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the United States, to “protect free, open and peaceful seas.” ‘Ironclad’ vow The United States, meanwhile, reiterated its “ironclad” commitment to the Philippines. According to a White House statement, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan assured National Security Adviser Eduardo Año of US support in safeguarding its sovereign rights in the WPS under the Mutual Defense Treaty between both nations. “Sullivan reiterated US support for our Philippine allies following the PRC Coast Guard and maritime militia’s dangerous and unlawful actions on 22 October, obstructing a routine Philippine resupply mission to Second Thomas Shoal,” the statement read. “Sullivan emphasized the ironclad US commitments to the Philippines under theUS-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty, which extends to armed attacks on Philippine public vessels, aircraft and armed forces — to include those of its Coast Guard — in the Pacific, including in the West Philippine Sea,” it added. Signed in 1951, the Philippines and the United States agreed that an armed attack in the Pacific area on either of the parties would be dangerous to its own peace and safety and declared that it would act to meet the common dangers by its constitutional processes. The White House said Sullivan and Año “reaffirmed the enduring alliance and friendship between our nations and discussed upcoming US-Philippine engagements and ways to further strengthen our close partnership.” Manila vs Beijing Both Manila and Beijing condemned the incident, which they said violated their sovereign rights over Ayungin Shoal, a low-tide elevation in the WPS. The two countries traded blame for the incident, which also sparked concern from Australia, Canada and South Korea. In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration rejected Beijing’s historical nine-dash line claim to the WPS. Militia boats utilized Teodoro labeled the Chinese actions near the shoal as deliberate. “Chinese Coast Guard and maritime militia vessels, in blatant violation of international law, harassed and intentionally hit the Unaiza May 2 and Philippine Coast Guard vessel BRP Cabra,” Teodoro said. “We are here to decry in the strongest terms this egregious violation and illegal act within the Philippines’ 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone and the obfuscation of the truth by China’s distorting of the story to fit its own ends.” His comments came hours after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. met with security officials and ordered the Coast Guard to investigate the incident, which was “being taken seriously at the highest levels of government,” Malacañang said. The military monitored “a large number of Chinese maritime militia vessels” swarming in the West Philippine Sea, National Security Council spokesperson, Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya, said. In a television interview, Malaya said these vessels were spotted “not only in the vicinity of Ayungin Shoal and Bajo de Masinloc but also in other features, including (Scarborough Shoal) and Sabina (Escoda) Shoal.” “We are alarmed by the environmental degradation our Coast Guard ships were able to monitor in these areas,” he told the ANC. Malaya noted that environmental degradation or coral destruction would directly impact the livelihood of the fishermen in the WPS. “Sometimes we forget the reasons why we are pushing our rights in the WPS. Some critics say this is just posturing on the part of the Philippines or a tug-of-war between China and the Philippines. No, this is not,” he stressed. “This is a battle for the resources of our country, particularly for our fishermen, so that when we monitor coral destruction in parts of the WPS, it alarms the government because it directly impacts the livelihood of our fishermen,” he said. Malaya also slammed China’s “maligned information operation” and sharing of “false narratives” in its sweeping claims on the WPS. “Definitely, there’s a maligned information operation going on nowadays that is shared to the public and we are just happy it is not just the Philippine government that is sharing our side here — we have allies, if we may call them witnesses, from the media,” he said. Turkish city centenary holds special significance
Standing at the foot of the cliff overlooking Kemaliye, the golden statue of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the father of the nation, evokes the glorious past of this small town in eastern Turkey. Ataturk rewarded the loyalty of the town, nestled between the mountains and the sources of the Euphrates, by giving it his name ahead of creating the Turkish republic out of the ashes of the Ottoman Empire 100 years ago. “The whole country would have wanted to bear his name but he would never have accepted!” said retired hotelier Haci Omer Yalcinkayalar, referring to the modest nature of Ataturk, who will be celebrated on the nation’s anniversary on 29 October. General Mustafa Kemal, hero of the Dardanelles war against the Allies, in 1919 began confronting the Westerners who occupied the dismembered empire to found the independent nation he longed for. His forces found themselves nearing disaster at the gates of Ankara in 1921 when he received a telegram from Egin, a trading town at the crossroads of Anatolia and the Caucasus, with an Armenian population. The telegram read: “Dear Pasha, we have 500 horsemen ready to leave at your command,” recounted Yalcinkayalar. Situated on the caravan routes heading towards Baghdad, Iran and Georgia, the town was prosperous. This is evidenced by the persisting stone and wooden houses that were built along the steep slopes of the mountainside, which town authorities requested to be classified as a UNESCO world heritage site. The entire district had around 20,000 inhabitants including some 6,000 in Kemaliye itself in Ataturk’s time, compared with 1,500 residents today. “In the end, they didn’t have to do it,” Yalcinkayalar said of the offer to send horsemen. But Ataturk did not forget the gesture and, a year later, he wrote to the Egin municipal council to offer his name. “It was given to us as a gift,” said the 73-year-old who has devoted his retirement to his town’s history. “It honors us: With the republic, we joined the civilized world.” Kemaliye has been home to many celebrations including concerts, football tournaments and banquets on every October 29 since the birth of the republic in 1923. In Guzide Tufekci’s family, the story is passed down with enthusiasm: The 60-year-old former literature professor, an enthusiastic Kemalist, recalled what Turkish women owe to Ataturk and the republic. “He opened the way for enlightened Turkish women, intellectuals, to have access to education, to have a profession. We’re proud of him,” she said. Facing a small train station that has served Kemaliye since 1938, a modest cafe is decorated like a museum. Erdal Erdurk, 59, has hung portraits of Ataturk on all the walls — in color, in black and white, in a soldier’s uniform, in a tuxedo or wearing his Astrakhan hat — and hung a huge red flag bearing his image above the entrance. Two dead in Bangkok mall shooting, 14-year-old boy arrested
A 14-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday after a shooting at a packed Bangkok mall that left two people dead and five wounded, and sent hundreds of panicked shoppers running in terror into the streets. Witnesses told AFP of chaotic scenes as shots rang out at the upmarket Siam Paragon mall in the heart of the Thai capital around 4:30 pm (0930 GMT). The shooting comes just days before the first anniversary of the deadliest massacre in modern Thai history, when an ex-policeman armed with a gun and knife attacked a nursery in the country's north, murdering 24 children and 12 adults. National Police Chief Torsak Sukwimol told reporters that two women -- one Chinese, one from Myanmar -- were killed in the mall shooting, and five other people wounded. He said the 14-year-old suspect was in custody but was too confused to undergo questioning. "He is a mental patient at Rajavithi hospital and he has not been taking his medication," Torsak said. "He said it felt like someone told him to 'go shoot people'. It's like there's another him. This is what we got from the initial talk with him." Video footage showed a long-haired boy wearing a black shirt, glasses and a cap with a US flag motif being taken into custody by police. Yuthana Srettanan, director of the Erawan Emergency Centre, told reporters that all but one of those who were shot were women. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin visited the scene of the shooting as well as calling on the wounded in hospital. Srettha posted on X, formerly Twitter, that he had spoken to the Chinese ambassador and offered condolences. "From now on, the Thai government will implement the highest safety measures for the safety of all tourists," Srettha wrote. Thailand is keen to attract more Chinese visitors as it rebuilds its tourism industry after the pandemic, but numbers are lower than hoped, partly because of safety fears. A private school called The Essence, just metres from Siam Paragon, confirmed the suspect was one of their students and offered condolences to the victims' families. "We will collaborate with the authorities and investigators for the benefit of those involved," Wiwat Catithammanit, director of the $4,000-a-term school said in a statement. 'Multiple gunshots' Witnesses described scenes of panic as the attack unfolded at Siam Paragon, one of Bangkok's top shopping destinations, hugely popular with tourists and Thais alike. "At around 4:30 pm, I heard loud gun noises, continuously, about 10 times," Thanpawasit Singthongkham, 31, who works at a Japanese restaurant in the mall, told AFP. "Then the department store announced that there was a shooting. The emergency sign was turned on and everyone ran to get out." In footage shared with AFP, he recorded a scrum of terrified shoppers scrabbling under metal security gates blocking shop entrances, before they fled down emergency stairwells as sirens blared. In another video, shared on Facebook and verified by AFP, scores of people can be seen in the mall's basement car park being directed by loudspeakers. Dozens of police vehicles and a number of ambulances could be seen outside one of the shopping centre's main entrances in the wake of the shooting. "I heard multiple gunshots -- about three times -- and saw people running around towards the exits," Nattanon Dungsunenarn, who was shopping in a branch of Boots pharmacy, told AFP. "It was very chaotic and seemed like many people didn't know what exactly was going on." 'Terrified' "We didn't know what was happening, then staff from a shop asked us to go inside and said there was a shooter," Chinese tourist Xiong Ying, 41, told AFP. "Everyone was trying to find a place to hide. So many people were terrified, just like a scene in the zombie movies. "I now feel quite scared. It happened just like two minutes after we left by crossing the bridge. We even took photos there." Almost a year on from the October 6 nursery massacre, the mall shooting will raise fresh questions about gun control in Thailand, which has one of the highest rates of firearm ownership in the region. In 2020, a former army officer went on a rampage in a shopping mall in Korat, murdering 29 people and wounding scores more. This month, Starbucks Philippines marks its 25th anniversary with the opening of Starbucks Reserve Hiraya in Tagaytay City. The new store will take customers on a visual journey . “The name ‘Hiraya’ is a variant of the Old Tagalog term haráya, which translates to imagination, creativity or the power of the mind,” shared Menchu Lopez, Store Development head of Starbucks Philippines. “By coming together with our customers and partners (employees), this store is a testament to what we can achieve with boundless imagination.” Starbucks Reserve Hiraya sits on the ridge that overlooks the Taal Volcano. The architecture complements the landscape by creating a thoughtful transitional space between indoors and outdoors, with flat rooflines, oversized windows and overhanging eaves. The nearly 500-sqm store features terraced seating to ensure an enhanced view of the volcano. The wooden entry doors are also adorned with intricate carvings of the coffee plant. Center stage is a signature Reserve Bar, brewing rare small-lot coffees on the Starbucks proprietary OVISO espresso machine, the very first one in the Philippines. The use of local materials and artisanal crafts is intentional -- from the look and feel of mahogany wood and lava stone used throughout the store to the woven rattan panels above the Reserve Bar. The unique wall art installation is designed by local contemporary artist, Aze Ong. Inspired by coffee origins and taste profiles, the bean-to-cup coffee journey is expressed through the artist’s use of colors, shapes and weaving techniques. Customers can indulge in a wide selection of freshly baked pastries, from flaky croissants to delicious milk and cheese rolls. For the drinks, one of the highlights is the crafted Hiraya Latte. Politically divided Chile marks 50-year coup anniversary
Chile on Monday marked 50 years since the coup d'etat that brought Augusto Pinochet to power, with political divisions over the legacy of his brutal dictatorship on stark display. Commemorations of the violent US-backed ouster of Marxist leader Salvador Allende still evoke strong emotions, and police fired teargas and water cannons at protesters who vandalized the presidential palace on the anniversary's eve. Leftist President Gabriel Boric led an event at the palace, known as La Moneda, to mark the historic date, and stressed the need to condemn those who violate human rights "without any nuance." "The coup cannot be separated from what came after," he said, referring to the 17-year Pinochet dictatorship under which more than 3,200 people were killed or "disappeared" and tens of thousands tortured. The far-right UDI party issued a statement Monday defending the coup as "inevitable" due to the failures of Allende's political left. The presidents of Mexico, Colombia, Bolivia, and Uruguay were at the emotional ceremony in Santiago, also attended by Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello and former Uruguayan president Jose Mujica. No right-wing representatives attended Monday's event at La Moneda. Poetry readings and musical performances were interrupted by a minute of silence to mark the moment the bombs started dropping on the palace. Allende committed suicide while troops and tanks closed in. As night fell, thousands arrived at the national stadium in the capital -- once used by Pinochet's regime as a torture center -- to place candles in memory of the victims. Elsewhere, protesters on the outskirts of town prevented the passage of vehicles. The 1973 coup, in a country seen until then as a bastion of democracy and stability in Latin America, reverberated around the world and underscored covert interference by the United States. US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said Monday that President Joe Biden's government "has tried to be transparent about the US role in that chapter of Chilean history by recently declassifying documents from 1973 as the Chilean government has requested us to do." 'Never again' Chileans remain deeply divided between those who defend the coup and those who repudiate it, while many feel the anniversary is irrelevant amid economic woes and concerns over rising crime. A survey conducted by Cerc-Mori in May found that 36 percent of people believe Pinochet "liberated Chile from Marxism" -- the highest figure measured in 28 years of polling. On Sunday, Boric became the first president since the end of the dictatorship in 1990 to attend a commemorative march through Santiago for Pinochet's victims. But the procession was marred by vandals causing damage to the exterior of La Moneda and the general cemetery that houses a victims' memorial. Six police officers were injured and at least 11 people were arrested, officials said. Boric blamed the acts on "adversaries of democracy." On Sunday night, some 6,000 women dressed in black held a peaceful vigil in the capital under the slogan: "Never again will democracy be bombed," in reference to the 1973 air raids. Politics 'a little toxic' Led by Boric, Allende's leftist political heirs are in power in Chile today. But the far-right Republican Party -- Pinochet apologists -- emerged the strongest from elections in May for a body tasked with drafting a new constitution to replace the one that dates from the dictatorship era. Pinochet died of a heart attack on 10 December 2006, aged 91, without ever stepping foot in a court. Michelle Bachelet, a former leftist president of Chile, told a local radio station Monday the country must "learn from the lessons of the past" at a time when politics "is a little toxic." She herself was tortured during the dictatorship, as was her father, an air force general who had opposed the coup. Chile's right-wing opposition has abstained from signing a document affirming a commitment to "defend democracy from authoritarian threats" that has been signed by four living ex-presidents of the South American country. On Sunday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the 1973 coup "was an institutional breakdown that ruptured the bonds of coexistence and marked generations of Chileans, but also inspired many to fight for justice and freedom." He added: "Today's strong Chilean democracy gives us hope that humanity, united in its diversity, can solve any global challenge." Biden urges ‘national unity’ 22 years after 9/11
President Joe Biden called Monday for Americans to unite despite bitter political differences as the United States marked the 22nd anniversary of Al-Qaeda's 9/11 attacks. Bells were rung and the names of nearly 3,000 people were read out in somber ceremonies in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania where the hijacked planes struck. "Let's honor September 11 by renewing our faith in one another," said Biden, speaking at a US military base in Anchorage, Alaska as he traveled back from a trip to India and Vietnam. "We must never lose our sense of national unity, so let that be the common cause of our time." Speaking in front of a huge flag, Biden added that "terrorism, including political and ideological violence, is the opposite of all we stand for as a nation." His speech comes as the United States is increasingly polarized, with tensions likely to increase as Biden, a Democrat, heads into a likely election rematch next year with Republican former president Donald Trump. Trump has been indicted four times since April, including for efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, with the 6 January 2021 Capitol attack by his supporters still fresh in the public's memory. 'Never forget' In New York, Vice President Kamala Harris and current and former mayors joined victims' families at the 9/11 memorial on the site of the World Trade Center twin towers brought down by two aircraft flown by hijackers. The names of the more than 2,600 who died in New York were read out by family members and young relatives not alive at the time of the attack. "I wish I had a chance to really know you. Everyone in the family misses you. We will never forget," said the grandson of firefighter Allan Tarasiewicz, who was killed at age 45 during rescue operations at the World Trade Center. At the Pentagon in Washington, where the attackers plunged a third aircraft into the headquarters of the US military, a sailor rang a ship's bell for each of the 184 killed there. And in western Pennsylvania, where a fourth hijacked plane apparently heading toward Washington was forced to crash, bells were rung for each of the 40 passengers and crew who died. "September 11 made America a nation at war, and hundreds of thousands stepped up to serve our country in uniform," Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said at the Pentagon ceremony. "I know that it aches to remember this milestone year after year... The men and women of the Department of Defense will always remember." Across New York City, in Congress and elsewhere, a moment of silence was held to mark the attack, plotted by Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, who was found and killed nearly a decade later by US Navy Seals in a raid on his hideout in Pakistan. Biden noted in his speech that he himself had given the order for bin Laden's successor Ayman al-Zawahiri to be sent to the "gates of hell" last year in an airstrike in Afghanistan. "The soul of America is the fortitude we found in the fear of that terrible September day," he added. "The terrorists believed they could bring us to our knees, bend our will, break our resolve. But they were wrong, they were dead wrong." The post Biden urges ‘national unity’ 22 years after 9/11 appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
WTC attack death list adds 2 new victims
Americans mark today the 22nd anniversary of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on New York City with two new victims added to the list of 1,649 identified fatalities. The identities of the two, a man and a woman, were determined through DNA analysis, the city’s mayor and Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Friday. Their names were being withheld at the request of their families. “We hope these new identifications can bring some measure of comfort to the families of these victims, and the ongoing efforts by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner attest to the city's unwavering commitment to reunite all the World Trade Center victims with their loved ones,” Mayor Eric Adams said, according to a statement released late Friday. The two latest identifications were made possible through the use of “next-generation sequencing technology” more sensitive and rapid than conventional DNA techniques,” the OCME statement said. The remains had been found years ago. A total 2,753 people were killed when an al-Qaeda commando crashed two hijacked civilian airliners into New York’s twin towers during 9/11. Still unidentified are 1,104 victims. When the trade center’s south tower, and then its north, collapsed in a deafening roar, raining down a deluge of fire, choking gray dust and twisted steel on the Manhattan streets below, the violence was so extreme that no identifiable trace has been found of hundreds of the missing. Nineteen jihadists, most of them Saudis, had hijacked four planes. In addition to the two that destroyed the World Trade Center, a third plane slammed into the Pentagon near Washington inflicting heavy damage, and a fourth crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew fought with the attackers. The attacks claimed a total 2,977 lives. WITH AFP The post WTC attack death list adds 2 new victims appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
US reaffirms ‘ironclad’ commitment to Phl amid celebration of 72nd anniversary of MDT
The United States on Wednesday reiterated its “ironclad” alliance commitment to the Philippines as the two nations observed the 72nd anniversary of their Mutual Defense Treaty. "The United States stands firm in our ironclad commitment to our alliance and partnership with the Philippines as we face new and continuing challenges," US Ambassador MaryKay Carlson said in a tweet. Signed in 1951, the Philippines and the US agreed that an armed attack in the Pacific area on either of the parties would be dangerous to its own peace and safety and declared that it would act to meet the common dangers in accordance with its constitutional processes. Earlier this month, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin III reiterated that the MDT between Washington and Manila is extended to the latter’s public vessels. “Austin reaffirmed that the Mutual Defense Treaty extends to Philippine public vessels, aircraft, and armed forces—to include those of its Coast Guard—in the Pacific, including in the South China Sea,” Pentagon Press Secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said. This was after China Coast Guard aggressively attempted to block the Philippines from its resupply mission to the grounded BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal. Ayungin Shoal, also known as Second Thomas Shoal, is located 105 nautical miles west of Palawan and is part of the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone. The US, along with other Western countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and France have condemned China’s aggressive actions in the South China Sea. China claims the vast South China Sea, including the West Philippine Sea. On 12 July 2016, the Philippines won its arbitral case against China in the Permanent Court of Arbitration – a landmark decision that China continues to reject. Kim oversees N. Korea military parade showcasing new drones, ICBMs
Flanked by visiting Russian and Chinese officials, Kim Jong Un oversaw a North Korean military parade featuring new drones and Pyongyang's nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missiles, state media reported Friday. At least four new North Korean military drones were towed on trailers through Pyongyang's Kim Il Sung square at the parade late Thursday, state media images showed, while another drone appeared to conduct a flyover overhead. Standing between Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chinese politburo member Li Hongzhong in the VIP viewing stands, Kim smiled and saluted as thousands of soldiers marched past, trailed by the country's most powerful ICBMs, which are banned under UN sanctions. The event, featuring Kim's first-known foreign guests since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, was to mark the 70th anniversary of the Korean War armistice, which ended open hostilities and is celebrated as Victory Day. Kim "extended warm militant greetings" to the parade, the official Korean Central News Agency said, and North Korea's defense minister Kang Sun Nam made a speech. The United States has no chance "of survival in case they use nuclear weapons against the DPRK", Kang said, referring to the North by its official name. He warned that any attempts by the United States to use armed force against the North would cause an "unimaginable and unforeseen crisis". The parade featured an array of new weaponry, including some first unveiled at a defense expo on Wednesday in Pyongyang, visited by Kim and Shoigu. North Korea's new underwater nuclear attack drone, called the "Haeil", appeared at the parade for the first time, Seoul-based specialist site NK News reported. "The strategic reconnaissance drone and the multi-purpose attack drone which was newly developed and produced... made circular flights in the sky above the (Kim Il Sung square," KCNA said. The "excitement and great joy of the spectators reached its height" when the nuclear-armed country's newest ICBM -- the solid-fuel Hwasong-18, tested in April and July this year -- was paraded through the square, KCNA said. The tests were roundly condemned by Seoul, Washington and Tokyo, and violate UN sanctions banning the North from any tests using ballistic missile technology. 'Send the US a signal' The parade is a key part of "promoting Kim Jong Un's ruling legitimacy and internal unity in this economically challenging time", Yangmo Ku, a political science professor at Norwich University, told AFP. But this year, with the inclusion of high-level guests from Moscow and Beijing, Pyongyang is also sending America "a signal that under strengthened ties with Russia and China, North Korea is militarily ready to cope with strategic threats from its enemies", he said. "All these acts mean the emergence of the new Cold War surrounding the Korean Peninsula," Ku added. Beijing is North Korea's most important ally and economic benefactor, their relationship forged in the bloodshed of the Korean War in the 1950s. "China's representation at North Korea's parading of nuclear-capable missiles raises serious questions about Beijing enabling Pyongyang's threats to global security," said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul. Russia, another historic ally, is one of a handful of nations with which Pyongyang maintains friendly relations, and experts said it was noteworthy that Moscow had sent Shoigu to the anniversary celebrations -- a rare visit by a Russian defense chief in the post-Soviet era. Kim has been steadfast in his support for Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, including, Washington says, supplying rockets and missiles -- a charge Pyongyang has denied. Russia's President Vladimir Putin sent a speech, read out by Shoigu at an anniversary event, according to KCNA, in which Moscow's leader hailed North Korea for its "firm support for special military operations against Ukraine". Easley said that "given Russia's need for ammunition for its illegal war in Ukraine and (Kim's) willingness to personally give the Russian defense minister a tour of North Korea's arms exhibition, UN member states should increase vigilance for observing and penalizing sanctions violations". The inclusion of foreign guests at this year's celebrations is a post-pandemic first, and hints at new flexibility toward enforcing border controls. North Korea has imposed a rigid Covid-19 blockade since early 2020, preventing even its own nationals from entering the country. It only resumed some trade with China last year and allowed new Beijing envoy Wang Yajun to take up his position this year. He is the first known senior diplomat to cross into North Korea since the border closure in January 2020. The post Kim oversees N. Coming home to a newly-improved Lanao del Sur
Marawi City is that one dreamy place that proves the Philippines has more to offer than meets the eye. [caption id="attachment_158168" align="aligncenter" width="525"] THE Islamic municipality of Tamparan has40 mosques.[/caption] Imagine seeing the iconic and age-old Lake Lanao flanked by two majestic mountain ranges and the Grand Mosque, the great Islamic sanctuary of the nation. Prior to the pandemic, these were the lone attractions drawing visitors to the capital of Lanao del Sur. For those desiring a tourist experience, a mere half-day in Marawi gave you everything you needed. Times have changed, however. During a recent return to my beloved hometown, I found myself pleasantly taken aback by the exquisite accommodations I was provided at the newly established Ridge Hotel. This modern marvel boasts an array of state-of-the-art indulgences, a culinary haven curated by a gifted chef, a reliable and uninterrupted WiFi connection, elegant function rooms and staff composed entirely of graduates in the fields of tourism and hotel management, epitomizing maximum professionalism. My invitation to the momentous launch of the month-long celebration commemorating the 64th founding anniversary of Lanao del Sur, extended personally by the honorable Governor Datu Mamintal “Bombit” Alonto Adiong Jr., a longstanding friend, and his son, Vice Governor Mujam Adiong, granted me a very endearing visit. The distinguished presence of Indonesian Ambassador Agus Widjojo as a special guest at the event further strengthened the shared kinship between the Philippines and Indonesia. Ambassador Widjojo noted that he felt a profound sense of belonging in the Philippines, given the shared commitment to the faith in Allah prevalent in the Muslim provinces of both nations. Their compelling Maranaw dances were accompanied by resonant melodies deriving from the kulintang ensemble. As the month unfolds, the province has laid out a comprehensive roster of events, including necessary medical outreach programs, magnetic agricultural exhibits, refreshing lake tours, a pivotal health summit and a scrumptious food festival, all to be held in the month of July. Trip down heaven road Indeed, my favorite one, Heaven Road, echoes the preferences of both locals and visitors alike. Nestled atop a panoramic hill, this majestic thoroughfare is adorned with charming cafés that gracefully connect Mindanao State University to the provincial capitol. The place shows Marawi’s ability to reinvent itself, seamlessly integrating current trends with the preservation of its rich cultural heritage. A common sight along Heaven Road is that of baristas in their taqiyah, or men’s prayer caps, and servers adorned in hijabs, the traditional headscarves worn by women. In fact, Heaven Road has become an irresistible muse for countless vloggers, who capture spectacular vistas of the surrounding landscape. On sun-drenched days, the ethereal clouds nearly graze the towering mountains, while after rainfall, a mystical mist envelops the terrain, thus explaining its moniker, Heaven Road. Aptly referred to as the “Baguio of Mindanao,” this sanctuary is well-known for its delicate climate and awe-inspiring sights of verdant forests, visible through the coffee shop windows. Earlier this year, the renowned Cebu-based chain, Bo’s Coffee, inaugurated its grandest Philippine outlet, sprawling across 1,000 square meters at Heaven Road. In addition to serving its signature homegrown coffee blends and refreshing cold beverages, this establishment boasts a panoramic 360-degree view of Marawi City. The exquisite interiors harmoniously incorporate traditional Meranaw architectural elements, such as the resplendent okir patterns, meticulously painted in vibrant hues along the facade. Its deign motifs ingeniously pay homage to the distinctive malong patterns. Haven Coffee and Tea, an establishment owned by a visionary entrepreneur hailing from Iligan City, has garnered significant attention on the social media platforms of the youthful Meranaw populace. Meticulously prepared to embody an original concept while fervently supporting local products and talent, this haven offers an unparalleled culinary experience. Its collection of lattés, rice meals, flavorful plates of pasta, delectable sandwiches, and sweet cakes are nothing short of extraordinary. Haven Coffee and Tea skillfully capitalizes on its sprawling al fresco dining area, affording patrons dazzling sceneries of the mountains during the day, and enchanting city lights after dusk. It is not uncommon to witness outdoor seminars hosted beneath sleek tents, as companies seek solace in the tranquil ambiance. As night descends, visitors are presented with a choice between submerging themselves in the melodious performances of live acoustic bands and Meranaw pop singers or opting for a quieter corner, where they can internalize the symphony of chirping crickets. Cafe Sindaw, renowned for its exquisite beverages and coffee offerings, goes beyond mere refreshments, upholding a hard-and-fast adherence to excellence. This reputable establishment prides itself on maintaining an impeccable standing among cafe shops in the city. In addition to its premium culinary offerings, Cafe Sindaw boasts a collection of fashionable function rooms, ideal for hosting both formal and informal gatherings with an air of sophistication. Other esteemed cafés in the vicinity provide an extensive selection of milk teas, accompanied by delectable sinkers, as well as an assortment of cold beverages and delectable pastries. Altitude Café in Marawi City offers a captivating dining experience that combines elegance with Asian-inspired flavors. With a chic and contemporary interior, the spacious and well-lit dining area provides a serene ambiance for a casual brunch or stylish evening out. The menu showcases a fusion of Asian and Lanao Del Sur’s culinary traditions, skillfully prepared by gifted chefs. From rich stir-fries to exquisite pastas, each dish echoes a devotion to culinary distinction, using locally sourced ingredients to herald the unique flavors of Marawi. Additionally, the café’s soaring location provides breathtaking scenic sights of Marawi City’s landscapes, enhancing the overall dining experience. For those in search of treasured souvenirs, Sarimanok Road unveils a trove of shops offering exquisite Meranaw crafts, timeless antiques, and an array of dry goods. Moreover, a diverse range of eateries grace this avenue, expertly preparing tantalizing halal meals, capable of satiating the desires of non-Muslim visitors. Determined to maintain my early morning exercise routine, I embraced the opportunity to embark upon invigorating jogs around the MSU track oval. As I briskly traversed the circuit, I reveled in the crisp, refreshing weather and inhaled the pure, unpolluted air. During my leisurely moments, I sought solace in reconnecting with long-lost friends and cherished relatives. Observing the burgeoning prosperity and urbanity prevalent throughout the city filled me with an overwhelming sense of pride. Once accustomed to witnessing influential families accompanied by their entourage of armed enforcers, I was pleasantly surprised to encounter neatly attired security guards, and their radiant smiles as they graciously opened doors. Marawi City, now blossoming into a haven incorporating every aspect that tourists seek, effortlessly negates the need to venture into neighboring cities. Entrepreneurs, driven by an unwavering faith in Marawi City’s resurgence, continue to establish small businesses, actively extending employment opportunities to their less-fortunate kin. Young individuals, armed with a quality education, now opt to remain in Marawi, actively participating in the monumental task of rebuilding the economy. Likewise, healthcare professionals, driven by an unwavering commitment to serve their homeland, have chosen to dedicate their skills within the city’s borders, rather than seeking greener pastures abroad. Going back to Tamparan During my journey, a valuable opportunity presented itself to reconnect with friends spanning different generations. Curiosity led me to venture into Tamparan, the sole Islamic municipality, merely a brief 30-minute ride from Marawi. To my awe, Tamparan revealed itself as a dynamic community, embellished with an impressive line of 40 mosques and inhabited by residents sporting their Islamic attire. The determined strength of their faith was palpable. I had the privilege of conducting an interview and was assured by one of the locals that exploring Tamparan is a safe endeavor, owing to the commendable leadership of Mayor Juhar Dimaporo Disomimba. Tamparan envisions itself as the agro-ecotourism and commercial center of Lanao del Sur. It aims to cultivate a community of God-loving and empowered citizens who thrive in a peaceful, resilient, safe and ecologically-balanced environment. This vision is supported by a progressive and transparent governance system that fosters growth and development. Representative Zia Alonto Adiong of Lanao del Sur eloquently encapsulates Marawi’s triumphant resurgence with an air of optimism, declaring, “Let us not only celebrate our past achievements but also embrace the boundless possibilities that lie ahead. First EXO-themed café opens in QC
You don’t have to travel all the way to South Korea to experience a taste of Korean culture. A lot of Korean-inspired cafes are already popping up in Metro Manila, providing a familiar and comfortable ambiance especially for coffee enthusiasts and K-pop fans. One trendy, Korean-inspired café that’s making a buzz these days is Café-408, the first EXO-themed café located on the second floor of The Rock Lifestyle Hub in Quezon City. Opened last 8 April, same day as K-pop group EXO’s 11th anniversary, Café-408 serves comfort food and a wide variety of quality coffee and non-coffee beverages. The cafe also incorporates EXO’s aesthetics and concepts. Among its menu are Truffle Fries, pasta, Birthday Cake Cookie, American Breakfast, croissant, muffins, s’mores and Chanyeol’s tteokbokki. Drinks include cold brew, Spanish Latte, Strawberry Mocha Latte, Blue Lemon Fizz and Mango Strawberry Fizz. [caption id="attachment_153711" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Mocha Latte.[/caption] On 30 June, when EXO’s “Hear Me Out” came out, fans gathered at the café for a free viewing of the pre-release track’s much-awaited music video. Similarly, a cupsleeve event was held by PHIXOs (Filipino EXO fans) as a way to celebrate the track’s release. Cupsleeve events are celebrations done by coffee shops or organized by fandoms to celebrate a K-pop artist’s birthday or comeback. Café-408 also unveiled its list of events for July on their social media accounts, including a whole-day open event dedicated to EXO’s comeback on 10 July and a celebration of its subunit EXO-SC’s debut anniversary on 21 July. KaladKaren’s historic feat: First transwoman anchor in local TV news
ABS-CBN takes pride in being the manager of transwoman star KaladKaren, who has been making waves in the TV industry. She is now the first transwoman news anchor in the Philippines, as co-host of TV 5’s Frontline Pilipinas evening newscast. She joined Gretchen Ho, Jes delos Santos, Justin Quirino and Mikee Reyes as news presenters on 12 June. There are gays and transwomen who are hosts of talk shows and variety shows on TV, such as Boy Abunda, Vice Ganda and Allan K, but KaladKaren is really the first to read out showbiz, lifestyle and cultural reports on a straight news program. In April, she emerged as the first transwoman to win best supporting actress at the Metro Manila Film Festival, specifically at the first-ever summer edition of the festival. She won for her hilarious turn in the film Here Comes the Groom. As an anchorwoman, she is billed as KaladKaren, a made-up name close to the Tagalog word “kaladkarin,” which refers to someone who is easy to drag along for any decent or indecent occasion. She started using “KaladKaren” as a performer in UP Mass Communication productions on campus. Her real name is Jervi Li. [caption id="attachment_151722" align="aligncenter" width="446"] PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF IG/KALaDKAREN | JERVI Li aka KaladKaren.[/caption] At her contract-signing recently at ABS-CBN, the celebrity impersonator was asked by a tabloid editor how exactly her name should be spelled and pronounced. The graduate of the University of the Philippines-Diliman stressed that her professional showbiz name should be spelled as one word, with the second “K” capitalized and the last syllable spelled with an “e”, not “i”, to emphasize “Karen,” the first name of the woman she famously impersonates: ABS-CBN broadcast journo Karen Davila. Corporate and news executives of TV 5 obviously find the pedestrian name “KaladKaren” good enough for a news presenter. On camera, her colleagues address her simply as “Karen.” KaladKaren is directly managed by Star Magic, the division for talent recruitment and development headed by Laurenti Dyogi, who is also ABS-CBN head of Television. Dyogi was present at the contract signing along with other Star Magic executives. KaladKaren said she will also be part of an upcoming series, a reality show and a movie. The country is actually late in giving transwomen a shot at news anchoring. The US and other countries have been doing so as far back as 2015. In February 2015, reporter and former TV news helicopter pilot Zoey Tur joined US television program Inside Edition as a special correspondent, becoming America’s first transgender TV reporter. Tur, formerly known as “Chopper Bob,” rose to fame for the live helicopter coverage of the 1994 police chase on Los Angeles freeways of fugitive American football star O.J. Simpson, who was charged with the murder of his ex-wife and her friend. In March 2018, Marvia Malik became Pakistan’s first transgender news presenter at Kohenoor TV. In an interview with Deutsche Welle, Malik said she had to work hard to break taboos and finally be accepted by a society that discriminates against transgender people. In February this year, Malik survived a gun attack outside her residence in Lahore. According to NDTV, Malik was returning from a pharmacy when two gunmen opened fire on her. Bangladeshi activist Tashnuva Anan likewise broke barriers by becoming the first transgender news anchor in her home country in 2021. Anan moved to New York from Bangladesh about a year and a half ago to pursue her acting career. She made her off-Broadway debut in Public Obscenities at SoHo Rep in May 2023. India Willoughby is the first transgender TV news reporter in the United Kingdom. In 2017, she joined 5News on Channel 5, where she read the lunchtime and evening updates. She was a familiar face to millions of viewers in her former life as Jonathon, a contestant in Celebrity Big Brother. Nora Reichardt, who has worked at Local News 5 in Des Moines since July 2021, said she gradually came into her identity as a transgender woman over the course of several years and began a medical transition process. And Diana Zurco, 40, recalled her youthful rebellion ahead of her debut as the country’s first transgender newscaster in Argentina’s public TV station, a milestone for an excluded community that is often the target of violence and has a life expectancy roughly half that of the rest of the population. The ‘Pambansang Ginoo’ is also an entrepreneur
David Licauco, who became known as the “Pambansang Ginoo” following his well-loved appearance in the hit series “Maria Clara at Ibarra,” is making waves not only in showbiz but also in the entrepreneurial world. Licauco is the proud owner of two food establishments, Kuya Korea in Quezon City and Sóbra Café in Muntinlupa City. Licauco, along with co-owners Chef Mike Victorioso and AC Adriano, recently marked the first anniversary of Sóbra Café with a belated celebration, with GMA Network officials, Licauco’s family and close friends attending the event. Licauco posted a photo, captioned “1 year down” showing him with GMA executives including senior talent manager Tracy Garcia, vice president for Sparkle Joy Marcelo, senior vice president for Corporate Strategic Planning and Business Development, concurrent Chief Risk Officer and head for Program Support Regie C. Bautista. The Sparkle talent pool was represented by guests such as stylist David Milan, talent manager Jan Navarro, senior artist handler Isabel Bulatao and artist Rain Matienzo. The pair (known to fans as “FiLay”) flew to Korea to shoot the film, which will be made available worldwide. NY tribunal clears Bloomberry from heist
The Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court upheld on 30 May 2023 an order clearing a unit of Bloomberry Resorts and Hotels Inc. or BRHI from the complaint of Bangladesh Bank regarding an $81-billion online bank heist. A decision and order dated 30 May 2023, received by Bloomberry in the evening of 30 May 2023, upheld the order of the Supreme Court, New York County dated 8 April 2022 which granted the motion to dismiss the Bangladesh central bank’s complaint against Bloomberry unit Solaire resort. Bloomberry Resorts Corp., and its subsidiary Bloomberry Resorts and Hotels Inc., along with Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation, and Eastern Hawaii Leisure Company, Ltd have all been accused of serious crimes, including conspiracy to commit, fraud, aiding and abetting, conspiracy to commit fraud, conversion, theft, misappropriation, and a litany of other charges. Hackers went for $1B The suit was related to the attack on Bangladesh Bank by North Korean hackers in 2016 that resulted to the syphoning off a total of $1 billion from the bank’s accounts. The hackers attacked the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, which responded rapidly, blocking the majority of the transfers, but after letting $101 million slip through. The bank was able to retrieve $20 million of these funds, but the remaining $81 million remained unaccounted. In the probe on how the remainder of the money was used, it was found the majority of the funds were channeled through various casinos and gambling properties and used to buy gaming chips and play in junket rooms. The hackers were successful in transferring the money because the criminals specifically launched their attack during the long weekend. Since the racket took place, Bangladesh Bank has been looking to recover the missing funds, essentially accusing the defendants of not acting in good conscience when it came to examining the source of funds and flagging the matter with authorities in a timely fashion. With the latest rulings, however, it’s unlikely for Bangladesh Bank to recoup any further of the missing funds. Phl Navy @ 125: Activates 2 FAIC-M platforms
The Philippine Navy on Friday commissioned into service its two brand new Israeli-made fast attack interdiction craft missile (FAIC-M) platforms as it celebrates its 125th anniversary at the Commodore Divino Pier in Manila. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. graced the formal activation of the country’s new capable boats—the third and fourth addition to the existing components of Acero-class Patrol Gunboats (PG) of the Fleet's Littoral Combat Force. Marcos sees the commissioning of the vessels as a significant naval aspect of the country’s military operations. “This endeavor will pave the way for the holistic transformation of our AFP into a stronger, modern, and formidable organization. By then, the AFP will be more effective in its military aims and more responsive to our national goals,” Marcos said. Earlier this month, the Philippine Navy christened these two ships—the BRP Gener Tinangag (PG903) and BRP Domingo Deluana (PG905), named after the Philippine Marine Corps heroes and Medal for Valor awardees for bravery and sacrifice beyond the call of duty, late Cpl. Gener Tinangag and late Sgt. Domingo Deluana. PN spokesperson, Capt. Benjo Negranza said the vessels will be deployed to the vital choke points, major sea lines of communication, and littoral domains of the country. “These 32-meter long gunboats will provide added muscles to the Navy's capability to secure the seas with their quick intercept ability, remote stabilized weapons, and short-range missiles,” Negranza added. Meanwhile, Navy Chief, Vice Adm. Toribio Adaci Jr., said the two newly-commissioned vessels “symbolize the promising future of our maritime defense and efforts toward enhanced capabilities, increased resilience, and stronger presence in the maritime domain.” The newly commissioned vessels are part of the Philippine Navy’s FAIC-M acquisition projects, along with the procurement of nine Israel-made Shaldag Mark V missile boats worth P10-billion. This project is under the Horizon 3 of the modernization program of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The post Phl Navy @ 125: Activates 2 FAIC-M platforms appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
