Britain’s iconic red phone boxes get new lease of life
In a workshop packed with historic memorabilia, from rusty petrol pumps to vintage enamel signs, Carl Burge skillfully applied the finishing touches to the red British telephone box he was restoring. "They're iconic," said Burge, 54, who has been working on revitalising the tired, ageing phone kiosks for over 20 years. Emblematic of the UK worldwide, these sturdy red pillars first rolled out in the 1920s have endured everything from vandalism to the country's famously wet weather over the ensuing decades. "If you were to send a postcard with nothing written on there apart from a picture of a telephone box and send it anywhere in the world, chances are 95 percent of people will say: that's England," he added. The number of phone boxes in Britain peaked in the 1990s at around 100,000, though many were not the famous red designs. While less used now with the widespread use of mobile phones, around 20,000 working public payphones remain nationwide. Redundant red and other phone boxes are increasingly being adopted by local communities and converted into facilities such as mini libraries, visitor information stands and defibrillators. Some are even rented out by small businesses, like the tiramisu shop called "Walkmisu" in central London. Daniele Benedettini has set up shop inside two red boxes on the edge of Russell Square, selling the famous Italian dessert and coffee. "I think it was a really cool idea to use something really English traditional with something very Italian," Benedettini told AFP. 'Real gem' The cost of running a business from a phone box has also proved lower than opening a regular shop, he added. The 29-year-old, who rents the boxes from a private owner, said they were his first business before also opening a cafe nearby. The phone boxes have been renovated inside and fitted with shelves, a fridge and coffee machine but outside they remain largely the same, as they have stood for decades, apart from some posters on the windows. Burge said that restoring a telephone box takes an average of six weeks, starting with the "painstaking" process of stripping it down to the "bare bones". "You don't know what you are going to find under that paint. You might find a real gem," he added. Burge has seen many phone boxes come through his workshop in the town of King's Lynn, eastern England, and says they are often broken, missing glass from the window panes or their wooden doors are rotting. Once the box's cast-iron frame is stripped of all internal and external components, it is sandblasted to remove paint, rust and any other impurities. The next step is applying body filler and sanding out any imperfections in a laborious process that is done by hand and which can take several days to complete. Finally the telephone box is spray painted with the "Post Office Red" colour, laminated glass is installed and the door is fitted with a new hardwood outer frame. 'Enthusiasm' Burge, who worked in the motor trade for 20 years, turned his passion for collecting British memorabilia into a full-time business called "Remember When UK". He spotted his first phone box while driving past a property that was going on sale. He bought it off the owners, restored it and kept it in his front garden. Burge later sold the phone box but said he "missed it" and thought he would like to refurbish another one. One turned into many, and now Burge is working on restoring several telephone boxes at a time. Among them is an example of the famous K2, which was Britain's first red colour telephone box introduced in 1926 and designed by British architect Giles Gilbert Scott, who is also known for his work on London's Battersea Power Station and other public buildings. But even after two decades in the trade, Burge said he hasn't lost his passion for the work that he does. "I'm getting a little bit older now. Everything seems to be getting a little bit heavier. But I think my enthusiasm level is on par with where it was 22 years ago," he said. "If anything, it's probably more," he added. MPW seeks swift Basilan core shelter project completion
LAMITAN CITY — Contractors of core shelter housing units in Basilan province have started to speed up their works after the suppliers of pre-cast steel materials used in framing the sections of the homes have started to arrive in the province. Ministry of Public Works Basilan District Engineer Kasim Hasanin on Friday said that they are now fast-tracking to complete 300 core shelter housing units by the end of the year. “Materials to be used in the construction of the 1,000 uniformed core shelter housing project have started to arrive and we are fast-tracking the fabrication of precast section frame of the houses,” said Hasanin. “Construction workers have already completed fabricating about 400 section frames of the houses and are ready to install in it in identified areas of the province,” he added. The MPW district engineer also disclosed that they are still waiting for the walling materials as the supplier has not yet shipped it to the province. “We already have about 100 core shelter homes completed and ready to award to the beneficiary of the program,” said Hasanin, adding that the slow delivery of steel materials by the supplier they use in fabricating the sections of the houses was the primary cause of the project’s delay. Improving permitting rules benefit miners
DMCI Mining Corporation said the mining industry is up for better days ahead amid regulatory improvements due to the supportive stance of the Marcos administration. In an interview with reporters over the weekend, DMCI Mining president Tulsi Das C. Reyes said the improvements in the permitting process are expected to translate to better production of mining companies. “We have seen some improvements because the administration has been very much supportive of the industry. But in fairness to the Duterte administration, they started that ball rolling,” Reyes said. “There has been a great amount of progression towards this kind of industry so those of you who have seen the nickel industry association programs, forward-thinking, they have always been resourceful and helpful for us to have a game plan rather than have this industry collapsing,” he added. Reyes, however, noted that the industry still needs a unified system for the permitting process so that mining companies can efficiently proceed with their projects. “We would love to have streamlined permits. I think the Department of Energy is setting the bar with a one-stop shop and if we can replicate that with the same ideals, that would be good,” he explained. The Philippine Nickel Industry Association or PNIA, the largest group composed of the country's nickel industry players, had also proposed the establishment of a “one-stop shop” program to expedite permitting processes in the mining industry. Once implemented, the streamlined process would significantly cut the tedious permitting process that could take as long as five to 10 years to just six months to a year. It can be recalled that DMCI Mining had already signified optimism that 2023 would be a banner year for the company, especially after its subsidiary Zambales Diversified Metals Corporation, or ZMDC was allowed to expand its production. ZMDC was granted an Environmental Compliance Certificate in January to increase its production to 2 million wet metric tons of nickel ore, from 1 million WMT before. DMCI Mining thus targets to complete a 1.5 million WMT nickel ore shipment by the end of the year. The post Improving permitting rules benefit miners appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
‘Snow White’ like never before
Repertory Philippines’ Theater for Young Audiences opens its first production after the Covid-19 pandemic with a new version of a classic fairy tale. Snow White and the Prince is a love story between these two iconic characters. Written by Janet Yates Vogt and Mark Friedman, the same authors of RTYA’s very successful 2017 production Rapunzel, Rapunzel! A Very Hairy Fairy Tale, it is a musical comedy for the young and the young at heart and will be enjoyed by the whole family. On the eve of her birthday celebration, Snow White anticipates her first ball, and dreams of romance. She meets a charming prince at the ball but her dreams are shattered by her stepmother who is jealous of her beauty. For her protection, her loving nursemaid sends her to the forest to find the nurse’s seven (of course) friends. Also, in the picture are a magic mirror who can never lie and, the symbol of evil, an apple. The guiding principle behind all RTYA productions is that children deserve as good a theater as adults and this production strives to do just that. Joy Virata, director and RTYA’s creative director, has gathered a group of both veteran and young actors to tell the story through simple and humorous dialogue and delightfully tuneful songs. Leading the cast are REP and RTYA regulars Carla Gueverra Laforteza and Pinky Marquez as the Queen with newcomer Julia Serad alternating. Veterans Chino Veguillas and Franco Ramos play the all-important Mirror along with newbie Sebastian Katigbak. In the title roles are Kiara Dario, Pappel (Ashlee Factor), Jillian Ita-as and Anyah as Snow White and MC dela Cruz, Neo Rivera and Rapah Manalo as the Prince. Abi Sulit, Ring Antonio and Cara Barredo alternate as the Nurse. Fourteen (seven times two) actors of all heights, weights, genders and ages (and with varying theater backgrounds), play the friends. Vive Versailles! A right royal welcome for British monarchs
For his first state visit as sovereign to France, which had to be postponed for six months due to riots, Britain's King Charles III will receive the gold standard of French welcomes -- a reception at the Palace of Versailles. The palace, which was the seat of the monarchy before the French Revolution of 1789, is now a museum, but it is still used by French presidents to host leaders they want to impress, from Queen Victoria to Vladimir Putin. 'Long live the king!' France, which beheaded its own king and queen, has a long-running love affair with the British royal family and over the past 170 years has often wined and dined them at Versailles. Emperor Napoleon III threw a ball for 1,200 guests at the royal opera in Versailles when Queen Victoria visited in 1855, the first trip to Paris by a British monarch in 400 years. In 1938, as Europe stood on the threshold of another world war, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II swept into Paris to cries of "Long live the king!" and were too hosted at Versailles, in this case for lunch. Less than two decades later, President Rene Coty pulled out all the stops for the young Queen Elizabeth, Britain's longest-serving monarch who died last year, on her first state visit to France with her husband Prince Philip. After a night at the Paris Opera, the pair had lunch in Versailles' Hall of Mirrors, where the World War I reparations treaty was famously signed in 1919. Fondness for foie gras The land where food is king has served up an eye-popping array of delicacies for its British visitors. But Victoria, known for her voracious appetite, had only faint praise for French cuisine, writing that while "the fowl and bouillon are quite delicious" French cooking has "less variety than ours". Her son Edward VII was treated to a 16-course feast in 1903, complete with fattened chicken, quail and glazed ducks. By Elizabeth II's time, the menu had been slimmed down to four or five courses, with one recurring staple: foie gras. The Francophile queen had a fondness for the controversial pate obtained by force-feeding ducks or geese, but it is unlikely to feature on the menu for Charles, who has banned it from his household. Open for business Versailles has hosted many distinguished commoners as well. In the post-war years, President Charles de Gaulle used it to host John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon when they were US presidents, as well as the Shah of Iran. Socialist president Francois Mitterrand threw open the palace gates to communists when he used it to host Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. By contrast, Nicolas Sarkozy and Francois Hollande rarely used Versailles, with the exception of late Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi for the former and Chinese President Xi Jinping for the latter. In 2017, before Moscow's invasion of Ukraine turned him into a pariah, Russian President Vladimir Putin was welcomed there by his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron. Macron has also used Versailles to tout France's charms to foreign investors, including Tesla founder and X (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk who was invited to a business summit there in May. Maharlika gets P75-B seed fund
Two state financial institutions have plunked down their contributions to get the ball rolling for the Maharlika Investment Fund, or MIF, the country’s first sovereign wealth fund. The Development Bank of the Philippines turned over its P25-billion contribution on 15 September, the day after the Land Bank of the Philippines pumped in its P50 billion to the Maharlika Investment Corp., the corporate vehicle for the MIF, for a total of P75 billion in seed fund for the MIC. The Bureau of the Treasury, or BTr, on 28 August issued the implementing rules and regulations of the MIF Act of 2023, which took effect on 12 September. President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., in a forum last Wednesday in Singapore organized by the US think tank Milken Institute, said the government will be tapping mainly its unutilized reserves to find investment opportunities. He assured that professionals will run the fund without intervention from politicians. Marcos said the MIF will allow the government to tap the country’s reserves for investment without borrowing. The government seeks to utilize the MIF to bankroll infrastructure, energy development, and agriculture projects. DBP president and chief executive officer Michael de Jesus said DBP deposited its share of the seed fund to the BTr’s account on 15 September, ahead of the 17 September deadline. Under the law, the national government, DBP and LandBank are mandated to put up the initial capital of the MIC, contributing P50 billion, P25 billion, and P50 billion, respectively. Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno said the remittances from the two largest state institutions will pave the way for the full operation of the MIC. Hunt for execs starts Foreign and domestic investors are eagerly awaiting the full establishment of the MIC, as the national government is expected to complete the appointment of highly qualified and capable individuals who will comprise the MIC governing board. “We are witnessing a growing interest in investments in the MIF from multilateral financial institutions and foreign investors. With the regulatory requirements in place, and after securing the seed capital from the state-run institutions, we are confident the fund will be operational by yearend,” Diokno said. De Jesus said the MIC should optimize the use of the government’s financial assets to generate substantial returns and support infrastructure to promote the efficient management of wealth and assets. He added that “gains from both the financial and developmental fronts as a result of the trailblazing activities of the MIC” will be realized in the next four to five years.
