PVL: Perlas Spikers near third place repeat

BanKo inched closer to a podium finish after taking down PetroGazz, 25-14, 28-26, 10-25, 25-19, Wednesday in Game 1 of the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference best-of-three battle for third at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. Dzi Gervacio paced the Perlas Spikers with all but one of her 20 points coming off kills while playing superb floor defense with 18 digs and nine excellent receptions. Kathy Bersola and Nicole Tiamzon had 11 and nine markers, respectively, for BanKo, which can duplicate its Reinforced Conference third place finish with another win. “‘Yun ang sinabi namin sa mga players kasi emotional talagang medyo down ang team dahil sa nangyari sa semis pero wala nang magagawa doon, we have to move forward. Hindi talaga para sa amin, kaya itong third place pipilitin namin makuha,” said BanKo head coach Dong Dela Cruz, whose squad came off a painful Game 3 loss to Ateneo-Motolite in the Final Four.   Game 2 is on Saturday at the Batangas City Coliseum. The Perlas Spikers started out strong before facing tough resistance in the second. Tied at 24 in the second frame, Sasa Devanadera came off the bench and provided instant offense as she scored on back-to-back quick attacks to close the set. The Angels found renewed energy in the third and took advantage of BanKo’s sluggish game to save a set. But the Perlas Spikers were quick to get their bearing back to finish off PetroGazz. Paneng Mercado had 15 markers while Jonah Sabete got 12 for the Angels. Cherry Nunag and Cai Baloaloa finished with 10 markers each for PetroGazz.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

PVL: Perlas Spikers hurdle Lady Eagles to snatch semis Game 1

BanKo yielded sets to Ateneo-Motolite for the first time in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference Wednesday night. But it proved to be just a hiccup in the Perlas Spikers’ drive for a spot in the Finals. BanKo relied on their grizzled veterans in the deciding frame to prevail over the gritty Lady Eagles, 25-23, 25-19, 21-25, 19-25, 15-6, and take Game 1 of the best-of-three Final Four at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. Kathy Bersola, Nicole Tiamzon and Sue Roces powered the Perlas Spikers’ strong start in the deciding frame that saw BanKo create an 11-3 gap. Dzi Gervacio joined the scoring spree, sealing the win with back-to-back kills. “First two sets nandoon ang game plan namin eh, na-execute namin ng mabuti tapos noong third and fourth medyo nagkarga sila ng service saka yung receive nila gumanda kaya na-execute rin nila ang mga plays nila,” said Perlas Spikers coach Dong Dela Cruz. “(Sa fifth) ano lang naman yan, they have to go back kung ano ang ginagawa nila sa first and second sets. Ang instruction ko lang naman ibalik nila kung ano ang dating ginagawa nila and siguro beterano ang mga ito kaya gusto nilang manalo kaya ganoon ang start nila (sa fifth set),” he added. “Against Ateneo hindi sila pwedeng bigyan ng lamang kasi nagkakaroon sila ng kompiyansa.” Tiamzon posted 25 points with 21 coming off attacks, including four in the fifth set, while Gervacio finished with 20 markers built on 17 kills and three aces on top of 16 digs for the Perlas Spikers. Bersola had 16 points, seven off kill blocks, while Roces had 12 for BanKo, which is a win away from a breakthrough Finals appearance after a third place finish in the Reinforced Conference. Game 2 is on Saturday and if needed, Game 3 is on Sunday. Kat Tolentino registered 20 points, Ponggay Gaston had 14 markers while Maddie Madayag and rookie Vanessa Gandler chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively, against Ateneo-Motolite, which has yet to win a match against the Perlas Spikers.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

NCAA Season 94: Rolly, you will be missed

NCAA coaches and stars were one in saying that the passing of Rolly Manlapaz, considered as the voice of the college basketball, was a great loss in the tight-knit community. The former disk jockey and longtime UAAP and NCAA basketball barker, who also saw stints in volleyball games passed away Thursday after a bout with ALS. He was 58. “I just love the way he calls games,” said Lyceum of the Philippines head coach Topex Robinson. “Sometimes he makes it look like spooky by that sound but then again basketball will never be the same without that voice.” Manlapaz’s last stint with the NCAA was two years ago in Season 92 and called his last game four months ago in UAAP Season 80 women's volleyball Finals. His career spanned for two decades.  “I’m sure he will be remembered not only by the NCAA but by the whole basketball community,” he added. The voice that defined college and amateur basketball in this generation made even the most boring or one-sided game lively with his jewel of a voice and antics why calling out plays. Manlapaz can make an exciting game even more colorful, adding a different flavor and flare that only the stadium legend can deliver. Manlapaz also endeared himself with players and coaches by calling out their full name instead of their nicknames. “Sayang mami-miss namin ang mga sigaw niya dito sa Arena especially when he calls me Teodorico not Boyet. We’re gonna miss them,” said San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez. But Manlapaz’s greatest contribution in the game was his knack of baptizing players with lasting monikers. One of the cagers that got that honor was reigning NCAA Most Valuable Player CJ Perez.  Manlapaz gave Perez the moniker ‘Baby Beast’ when he was still playing for San Sebastian College’s high school team. Perez got the moniker for showing the same aggressiveness and tenacity of former Stag and now PBA star Calvin Abueva while wearing the same No. 7 jersey.  “Kay Sir Rolly nanggaling yung ‘Baby Beast’ na yun, noong FilOil pa lang ata yun,” Perez said. “It’s an honor na naging part siya ng mga league dito. Sobrang happy kami na nabibigyan kami ng moniker dahil sa kanya. Lumalabas ang pangalan namin dahil sa kanya.” San Beda’s Robert Bolick also shared his feelings on the passing of a friend. “Nagulat nga ako na ganyan ang nangyari akala ko naging OK na siya,” he said. “Nakaka-miss ‘yun kasi nakakagana maglaro ‘yun eh.” “Kaya ngayon ayoko na magganun-ganun (na layup). Dati kapag gumaganun ako siya kaagad yung, “Oh dipsy doo!” Ngayon medyo di na siya ganoon kasaya, nawawala ang saya,” he added. Manlapaz according to Bolick made any player perform better with his adrenaline-pumping calls. “Kahit sa UAAP ganoon ‘yan eh. ‘Pag tinawag nya ang pangalan mo parang feeling mo nasa NBA ka eh,” he said. “Maganda ang feeling kapag pumasok ka sa court. Nakakapagpaganda ng laro. Barker yun ang trabaho niya.” Bolick also remembered all the fun moments he had with Manlapaz. “Kahit noong La Salle pa ako kahit nasa bench lang ako tinatawag pa rin nya ako. Di ko nga alam eh (kung bakit ako tinatawag),” joked Bolick, drawing laughter from reporters. “Talagang may pinagsamahan din kaming dalawa. May koneksyon din kami.” “Nu’ng sa La Salle noong nag-championship kami sa UST, kapag nagwa-warmup kami ako pa rin tinatawag niya. Di ko nga alam, di naman ako naglalaro,” he continued. “Nahihiya tuloy akong mag-warmup.” “Nakaka-miss talaga yun and hopefully nasa magandang lugar na siya.”     --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles          .....»»

UAAP: La Salle s Encho Serrano doesn t want to be the next Calvin Abueva

Encho Serrano’s first two games in the UAAP Seniors were, put frankly, forgettable. The one-time top high school player only had a total of four points in a total of 21.5 minutes as De La Salle University started the season with a loss and then a win. Of course, Serrano acknowledged that he felt rookie jitters – especially after an almost two-year layoff from the UAAP. “Medyo pressured, pero kailangan ko talaga kasing bawiin yung matagal akong hindi naglaro,” he said. He then continued, “Sobrang gigil nung una kaya naging ganun na nga siguro.” The nerves finally settled for the first-year player on Sunday as he turned in his best game thus far with 11 points and four rebounds in 13 minutes of action. Yes, he nearly tripled his scoring total in the Green Archers’ 82-72 triumph over University of the East. Still, Serrano said he knows full well he could do much more. “Masaya, pero malayo pa. Wala pa masyadong kumpyansa, pero papunta na dun,” he said. Indeed, the native of Apalit, Pampanga is confident that he is already on his way there – especially if he is to fulfill the story behind his jersey number. Serrano once wore jersey number 27 in his time as star of Adamson High School, but had number 8 on his back in preseason leagues once he joined La Salle. “Dapat talaga, 8, kasi idol ko si Calvin [Abueva],” he said. That would have made sense as, even in high school, he was already being compared to PBA superstar Calvin Abueva. Come the UAAP Season 81, however, the Green Archer was now donning number 18. “Sabi kasi ng daddy ko, gamitin mo na lang 18, gumawa ka ng sarili mong pangalan. Yun na nga yung gusto kong gawin,” he said. If he only builds on this breakout game, he may very well do just that. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

Braves clinch 1st NL East crown since 2013, top Phillies 5-3

By George Henry, Associated Press ATLANTA (AP) — Freddie Freeman stood soaked in champagne with music blaring and his teammates jamming in celebration. This was just how the longtime star first baseman envisioned it when the Atlanta Braves began spring training seven months ago. "You could tell after the first week of workouts that we had the talent to do something special," Freeman said. "Obviously we still needed to put it together. But this is what happens. You win the division after three straight 90-loss seasons." The Braves capped a most surprising season by clinching their first NL East crown since 2013, with Mike Foltynewicz taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning Saturday in a 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. A year after going 70-92, manager Brian Snitker and his Baby Braves surged back into the playoffs. A loud crowd at SunTrust Park joined the party when rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. caught a flyball for the final out, setting off another round of the Tomahawk Chop and a big celebration on the field. "When we started this series, we knew it was within our grasp," Snitker said. "We knew we couldn't lose track of today. I know I'm redundant saying that all the time, but I felt we just needed to stay current and worry about today's game. These guys have done an unbelievable job of that this year." The Braves will make their first postseason appearance since 2013 on Oct. 4 in the NL Division Series. It has not yet been determined who or where the youth-filled club will play in the best-of-five round. Atlanta won its 18th division title, tying the New York Yankees for the most in the majors since division play began in 1969. The Braves won their fourth straight game and beat second-place Philadelphia for the third day in a row. The Phillies also startled a lot of fans this year and led the division in early August, but faded while going 6-14 this month. Foltynewicz (12-10) tipped his cap to a standing ovation as he left with runners on first and second in the eighth with a 4-0 lead. Jesse Biddle relieved, walked the first batter he faced and gave up two runs on Cesar Hernandez's bases-loaded single. Brad Brach allowed Rhys Hoskins' RBI single before Jonny Venters escaped the jam on a lineout and a grounder. Kurt Suzuki added an RBI single to make it 5-3 in the eighth off Seranthony Dominguez, the seventh pitcher used by Philadelphia. Arodys Vizcaino, in his first save situation since June 17, closed out the ninth for his 16th save in 18 chances, getting Wilson Ramos to ground out, striking out Roman Quinn and retiring Maikel Franco on a flyball to Acuna in left. Phillies starter Jake Arrieta (10-10) lasted two innings, allowing four runs, four hits and three walks in the shortest outing of his nine-year career. "I didn't do my job today," Arrieta said. "You've got tip your cap. They won the division. They really did. This wasn't something that started today, obviously. Individually, the last month I haven't been very good, and we didn't take care of business. We just didn't get the job done. They did." Atlanta led 2-0 in the first when Arrieta walked three of his first four batters, and Johan Camargo hit a two-run single. Freeman hit a two-run single in the second to make it 4-0. Freeman, one of two current Braves who played on the 2013 division-winning team —along with pitcher Julio Teheran — is hitting .389 over his last 14 games. "When Franco hit that ball, I put my hands up right away," Freeman said. "It means everything. This is goal No. 1. It's celebration No. 1. We've still got three more we've got to do. We've got 11 wins to get in October. We've still got to take care of business, but, man, is this a great feeling." Foltynewicz didn't permit a hit until Odubel Herrera singled to begin the seventh. Franco singled with one out in the eighth. The 26-year-old Foltynewicz has matured in his third full season, earning his first All-Star appearance and posting a 2.88 ERA that's almost two full runs lower than his career average entering the year. "We knew we had something special since day one," he said. "We've been telling you guys that all year, but to be able to do it and pull it off is pretty special. They got four runs for me today, which was a good confidence builder to go out there and be aggressive." BIG SURPRISE Atlanta was not projected to contend when the season began. It was coming off three straight 90-loss seasons, had no proven ace and was counting on several young position players to complement Freeman, the lone big bat in the lineup. The team had been embarrassed off the field with former general manager John Coppolella banned from baseball in a signing scandal, but Atlanta moved into first place on May 2 and never trailed in the division race after a 9-1 win over Miami on Aug. 13. Fueled by young budding stars like Acuna, second baseman Ozzie Albies and third baseman Camargo, the Braves won the NL East with an 8½-game lead. New GM Alex Anthopolous watched his team arrive earlier than he expected. When spring training began, he didn't think the team would be a serious contender until next year. "No, I'd lying through my teeth if I thought that," Anthopolous said. "I thought we have a really talented team with high draft picks. We have the potential to be really good and have a chance to get better. We certainly exceeded all those things. Snit, the coaches, the players — they're the ones who deserve all the credit for the year we put together." BIG FADE Philadelphia faltered down the stretch under first-year manager Gabe Kapler. After winning on Aug. 5, the Phillies were 1½ games ahead in the division and 15 games over .500. They have since gone 15-28. "I think this is a really important moment to reflect back to the beginning of the season and really the offseason," Kapler said. "If we said that we were going to be playing a meaningful game on Sept. 22, I think a lot of people would've said that's not a reasonable thought. "On the flip side, this is ultimately a stain. This hurts, but I'm ultimately proud of the guys for putting us in this position and to be fighting in Atlanta kind of the season on the line today." ROUGH DAY Arrieta lasted 2 1/3 innings in a loss for the Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh in his previous shortest outing Sept. 4, 2017. The Phillies dropped to 14-16 in his starts as Arrieta posted a 6.18 ERA and went 1-4 over his last eight outings. UP NEXT Phillies: RHP Aaron Nola (16-5, 2.44 ERA) has won one of his past four starts with a 5.01 ERA this month. Nola is 6-2 with a 2.24 ERA in 10 career starts against Atlanta. Braves: RHP Anibal Sanchez (6-6, 3.01 ERA) has won one of his past nine starts and has a 3.02 ERA during that span......»»

PVL: Perlas Spikers riding on Bright sunshine

BanKo head coach Dong Dela Cruz was all praises for his American import Kia Bright as she played a big role in the Perlas Spikers’ amazing sweep of the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 The reinforcement delivered the firepower needed by BanKo to finally barge in the Final Four after a disappointing inaugural season last year. Bright waxed hot Wednesday when she dropped 21 points to power the Perlas Spikers to a 25-19, 25-19, 25-19, sweep of Petro Gazz to earn the no. 3 seed in the Final Four against PayMaya.  Bright averaged 21.4 points per game in the quarterfinals while providing solid numbers on floor defense. Dela Cruz admitted that it took some time for his team to adjust with Bright. “'Yun ang sinasabi ko, kasi dati hindi namin mahuli 'yung ugali niya,” said Dela Cruz, who was relieved with the win as BanKo avoided a possible playoff against the defending champion Pocari Sweat handled by his ‘kumpare’ Jasper Jimenez for the last semis seat. “Masyado siyang tahimik eh. Hindi siya magsasalita hangga't 'di mo kinakausap.” “So na mi-misinterpret dati ng team 'yung katahimikan niya. Later on, noong nag-usap-usap kami, ganoon pala talaga siya, na gusto niya, tahimik lang kasi gusto niya maglaro ng maayos,” the mentor added. “Pero ngayon, nakikipag-kulitan na siya eh, during training at kanina sa game, medyo ano na siya. Kaya ayun, medyo gumaan na ang takbo ng team namin ngayon.” Bright knew right from the start her role with the team and liked that all of her efforts helped the Perlas Spikers reach the semis.   “Definitely, like I said, coming here I know the role that is expected of me and I embraced that and I know I’m gonna go out there and do my best,” said Bright, who averaged 20.4 points per game in the prelims. “I know I need to play at a certain level at a certain level for my team to be successful. I wanna make the game as easy as possible for them.” Bright is expected to carry BanKo once again in the best-of-three semifinals against a well-rested PayMaya starting on Sunday. “I expect them to go out, work hard and bring their best and I respect them for that,” she said. “Both forces are gonna go up against each other and the best team’s gonna win.”   ---               Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

Spending the night with Harry Styles

"I'm having your baby, it's none of your business!" we screamed at Harry Styles at the Mall of Asia Arena as he did his trademark "daddy dance."   We were singing along "Kiwi," the closing song in his Manila gig. We wanted more but he already played his entire album, plus some "One Direction" songs and two covers. He even played unreleased tracks---"Medicine and "Anna"---so, basically, there's isn't any song left for an extended encore.   The info on Spotify's Behind the Lyrics bit says that on "Kiwi," "Harry goes mental for a girl who may or may not be from Oceania."   Maybe it's about a person, or maybe "Kiwi" is a multipurpose rock track: One, it e...Keep on reading: Spending the night with Harry Styles.....»»

What the Fountain Knows

Tied to every coin is a desperate wish, a conflicted prayer, a pleading scream into the void. The water ripples as another coin breaks surface--- a shiny silver coin, landing swiftly. It collides with the rough tile, smack in the middle between a penny and a leather bracelet, too old and water-clogged to ever be worn again. A grown girl had thrown it, and now she darts out of the park like she is fleeing a crime scene. Her satchel bag whips behind her, dark hair flowing. She pushes against a family packing up their baby's stroller, slipping out of the shade of trees and paved bike paths like a bandit. It is not a crime to wish that she could pass her dream university. It is not ...Keep on reading: What the Fountain Knows.....»»
