AFP: PBBM, Australia back joint patrols in WPS
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is backing Philippine-Australia joint patrols in the West Philippine Sea/South China Sea as part of promoting an “open and free” Indo-Pacific Region. This was bared by Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. in a radio interview on Monday, noting that the plans for this endeavor are now ongoing after Marcos and the Australian government gave their approval. "Pinaplano pa rin ho natin 'yung mga detalye pero in essence ay na-aprove na po ng ating Pangulo at ng liderato ng Australia. This is to ensure na we maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific, kasama po tayo dyan dahil isinisulong po natin 'yung rules-based international order (We are now planning the details, but in essence the President and the Australian leadership have already approved it, and this will be done so that we can maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific. This is part of our efforts to promote a rules-based international order)," Brawner said. Both countries are currently conducting bilateral Cooperative Amphibious Serial drills also known as “Exercise ALON”, with 700 AFP personnel and 1, 200 members of the Australian Defense Force, assisted by 150 officers of United States Marine Corps, participating. In a joint statement on the sidelines of Exercise ALON released on 25 August, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and Australia Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defense Richard Marles said the Philippines and Australia mutually "discussed the importance of all countries in the region exercising their agency in support of an Indo-Pacific region that is based on sovereignty, international law, and ASEAN Centrality.” Teodoro and Marles mutually agreed on the importance of all states operating safely and professionally, while respecting and adhering to international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea or UNCLOS. “We reaffirmed our strong support of the 2016 South China Sea Arbitral Tribunal Award. In line with this, the Philippines and Australia have "recommitted to planning bilateral joint patrols in the South China Sea/ West Philippine Sea and other areas of mutual interest,” the joint statement further read. Brawner had previously said the Philippines is only exercising its military diplomacy when it comes to entering military-to-military activities with its allies and partners across the globe. In his previous interview, Brawner said the AFP will be exploring chances to heighten the country’s military presence in the WPS by conducting increased maritime patrols. “As of present, we are conducting such ourselves, unilateral patrols of the area. But we are exploring all possibilities because we very well know that when it comes to our own national defense, we really cannot do it by ourselves. We really have to depend on our allies, our partners,” he said. The post AFP: PBBM, Australia back joint patrols in WPS appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Phl, Australia conduct assault exercises
Nearly 2,000 troops from the Philippines and Australia — assisted by United States soldiers — participated in a combined amphibious assault exercise in San Antonio, Zambales on Friday as part of this year’s Exercise Alon 2023. Armed Forces of the Philippines Public Affairs chief LtCol. Enrico Gil Ileto said the exercise, held at the Naval Station Leovigildo Gantioqui, marked the second and final phase of amphibious action after the air assault exercise in Palawan earlier this week. “This is the first time that the Philippines and Australia have conducted Exercise Alon which forms part of Australia’s Indo-Pacific Endeavour 2023 program,” Ileto said. The participants include 1,200 personnel from the Australian Defense Force, 560 from the AFP and 120 from the US Marine Corps. “A result of months of planning and preparation by the AFP and the ADF with assistance from the United States Marine Corps, the training exercise at Naval Station Leovigildo Gantioqui included Pre-Landing Operations where the Philippine Marine Corps and ADF Force Reconnaissance Group were inserted via small boats to observe the beach landing sites,” Ileto said. Among the assets used in the drills were HMA ships Canberra and Anzac, with the Tarlac-class BRP Davao Del Sur (LD 602); close air support from Royal Australian Air Force F-35A Lightning II aircraft; Australian Army M1A1 Abrams tank and two Philippine Marine Corps Amphibious Assault Vehicles, with airlift support by Darwin-based USMC MV-22B. Ileto stressed that the exercise seeks to enhance the conduct of combined operations and improve tactics, techniques, and procedures to ensure the effective use of all combat arms integrated via force-level command and control. Animals become healing companions in Mexico hospital
Nine-year-old Alessia Ramos gently pets a hamster at a Mexican hospital where animals ranging from Australian parakeets to a Siberian Husky are being used to provide mental health therapy. "It helps me to relieve my anxiety, to control my emotions, to relax and be more focused," said Ramos, who has been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. Eight dogs are also among the furry therapists at the National Center for Mental Health and Palliative Care in Mexico City. Harley, a five-year-old Pug, lost his eye in an accident but made a quick recovery, said doctor Lucia Ledesma, head of mental health services at the Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers, the agency of which the hospital is a part. "We follow that example of resilience in the face of adversity. He's a dog that does everything, without impediments," she said. The facility is the only public hospital in Mexico using animals to treat mental illnesses, though such therapy is also practiced in other countries. "Contact with animals generates powerful neuropsychological changes that contribute to lowering states of stress and anxiety, as well as benefiting other cognitive processes," Ledesma said. Harley became famous in Mexico when he entered Covid-19 wards wearing a protective suit, booties and glasses to boost the morale of medical personnel working long hours away from their families. "It was the only animal-assisted intervention in the world within a Covid area," Ledesma said. "There were dogs in hospitals in other countries, but they never entered the Covid zone. We've received international recognition." Silvia Hernandez first met Harley when she was working as a nurse during the pandemic, which left her with mental health issues for which she is still undergoing therapy. "He came straight to me, as if he knew me, as if we were great friends," she said. "We could see colleagues becoming emotional and feeling that love, that gesture of Harley to release their tension. Some of them cried," Hernandez recalled. There is now a "Harley and his friends" self-care and mental health program and even a comic distributed in public schools. It seeks to promote mental health, prevent or detect complications and intervene in already diagnosed problems, Ledesma said. The most important attribute for a therapy dog is a calm temperament and willingness to interact with humans, she explained. Harley's fame led to food and canine accessories firms offering him their products for free and seeking to benefit from his high profile. "Harley, in that incomparable doggy personality, rejected all the offers. He told them: 'my work is totally humanitarian,'" Ledesma joked. sem/dr/mlm © Agence France-Presse The post Animals become healing companions in Mexico hospital appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

The Philippines and Australia officially wrapped up the second phase of their bilateral Army-to-Army Exercise or “KASANGGA” 23-2. PA chief, Lt. Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr., graced the closing ceremony at the headquarters of the 2nd Infantry “Junglefighter” Division (2ID) at Camp Capinpin in Tanay, Rizal on Friday, 23 June. Some 114 personnel from the 22nd Division Reconnaissance Company of 2ID have trained side-by-side with a platoon from the Australian Army since 5 June. The first phase of the bilateral drill was held from 15 May to 5 June. Brawner feted the participating troops for their efforts in the conduct of Kasangga 23-2. Minors rescued vs trafficking, online abuse
The local government of Taguig City reported on Wednesday that its operatives — along with other law enforcement agencies — rescued 12 minors, including 11 who were victims of human trafficking and online sexual abuse in three separate operations. Initial reports disclosed that the city government moved to assist law enforcement units for the rescue of four minors — a five-month-old baby, a three-year-old boy, a 13-year-old girl, and a 14-year-old boy -- on 25 May. During the operations, authorities arrested the mother of the minors as she was pointed as the culprit behind the trafficking and online sexual abuse. The Taguig City Social Welfare Development Office assisted the National Bureau of Investigation in the rescue operation as they detained the mother for violation of the Anti-Online Sexual Abuse or Exploitation of Children law, the Anti-Child Sexual Abuse or Exploitation Materials Act in relation to the Cybercrime Prevention law and trafficking. To recall, the CSWDO and the Philippine National Police’s Children Protection Center in Camp Crame on 10 May saved four minors — one female and three males. It was based on the referral by the Australian Federal Police, which said an Australian national was involved in the minors’ online sexual abuse and exploitation. On 5 May, four minors — a 16-year-old boy, a 15-year-old girl, and two 13-year-old girls — were rescued with the help of the Taguig Police Substation 4, the Department of Justice’s Inter-Agency Committee Against Trafficking, the Philippines Against Child Trafficking, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development-National Capital Region. The CSWDO said the rescued minors underwent medico-legal examinations and psychosocial intervention. The post Minors rescued vs trafficking, online abuse appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
