CIDG seizes 53 unlicensed firearms
The Philippine National Police on Monday reported the confiscation of 53 firearms that resulted in the arrest of an unlicensed gun dealer in Marikina City. In a press conference held at Camp Crame, PNP chief Benjamin Acorda Jr. said the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group busted the unlicensed firearms on Friday in Marikina City and opted not to identify the suspect. The country’s top cop said the successful operation conducted by the CIDG is part of the aggressive security measures to ensure peaceful and orderly Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections. He said to prevent the use of unlicensed firearms as part of the directives to all PNP units to intensify their efforts against the proliferation of loose firearms and recognize the potential risks and threats, especially with the upcoming BSKE this month. Acorda said the CIDG armed with two search warrants issued by the Executive Judge of the Regional Trial Court, National Capital Judicial Region of Marikina in collaboration with other PNP units, swooped down on the residence and store of an unlicensed gun dealer which resulted in the recovery and confiscation of 26 long firearms, 27 short firearms, assorted ammunition, as well as major and minor parts, tools, and machines used in manufacturing firearms. Acorda said the arrested person had no license to operate a firearms business and had not submitted any application to the PNP’s Firearms and Explosives Office for dealing and manufacturing firearms. He said that based on the investigation revealed that the suspect uses his establishment and social media to trade unlicensed firearms wherein among his customers are high-profile gun enthusiasts, politicians with alleged private armies, and some uniformed personnel from the police and military.” “The person arrested is also involved in online selling and some of his clients are private individuals who are maintaining PAGs (private armed groups). That is what we are afraid of. So in line with that with the intention of keeping our BSKE and also our streets safer, for every firearm that we are confiscating and reducing, for each firearm that falls under the hands of criminals or especially those that are not licensed they are perceived to be not responsible gun owners. With every accomplishment we have now it means that our streets are safer, every reduction in that gun makes our community safer,” he said. PBBM gives away confiscated smuggled rice to poor families
Fulfilling his vow to go after rice smugglers and hoarders President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. led on Tuesday the distribution of confiscated smuggled rice to less fortunate families in Tungawan, Zamboanga Sibugay as he led the turnover of other assistance to the residents and the local government units in the province. In his speech, President Marcos assured the Filipino people that the government and his administration are working tirelessly to put an end to the smuggling activities of some erring individuals, which is hurting the agricultural sector in the Philippines. The President said that he has already instructed the Bureau of Customs (BOC) to run after smugglers and ensure that their illegal operations will be busted as he commended the bureau for their successful seizure of 42,180 bags of imported rice worth P42 million at a warehouse in Barangay San Jose Gusu, Zamboanga City on 15 September 2023. The President stood firm that the government is following laws when confiscating smuggled items, giving them a 15-day notice to hear their side of the story. President Marcos assured the Filipino people that the government is ready to assist the affected less fortunate individuals. DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian was present during the distribution of rice along with NFA Administrator Roderico Bioco, BOC Deputy Commissioner Vener Baquiran, Philippine Airforce Brigadier Gen. Dennis Estrella, Philippine Army Major General Antonio Nafarrete, and other officials. President Marcos also led the turnover of P6.72 million worth of DA - Philippine Rural Development Project Investment for Rural Enterprises and Agricultural and Fisheries Productivity (DA-PRDP); P11.84 million worth of DA-PRDP I-REAP; and P1.5 million worth of DA Kadiwa Financial Grant (hauling vehicle). The President also distributed P1 million worth of DA Kadiwa Financial Grant (trading capital); P1.5 million worth of DA Kadiwa Financial Grant (vehicle and working capital); P59,043 worth of Assistance Certificate from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR): P76,620 worth of Mackerel Drift Gillnet; and P4,000 worth of eight rolls-PE Rope No. 10mm. The chief executive also led the distribution of P120 million worth of assistance under the “Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantages / Displaced Workers” of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and P530,000 worth of DOLE livelihood assistance. Love scammers arrested, ransom botnets shut
Cybercrime authorities in Indonesia have busted a love scam ring while European authorities have seized servers used for spreading malware that locks computers and IT systems worldwide. Acting on a tip-off from their Chinese counterparts, Indonesian police arrested 83 men and five women at an industrial park in Batam city in Riau Islands province on Tuesday. The suspects allegedly run an online love scam syndicate that blackmailed hundreds of victims in China, many of whom were public officials, police said Wednesday. Riau Islands police spokesperson Zahwani Pandra Arsyad told Agence France-Presse Wednesday that the Chinese suspects would be deported. The women scammers are accused of seducing victims before asking them to engage in sexual acts during the calls while other suspects recorded the videos. The suspects then allegedly blackmailed their victims, threatening to release the videos on social media if they refused to send them money. Meanwhile, United States justice officials said Tuesday they had shut down a notorious global cyber network called Qakbot that was used by criminals to extort tens of millions of dollars from thousands of businesses around the world. The crackdown dubbed “Duck Hunt” saw law enforcers in France, Germany, Netherlands, Romania and Latvia seized 52 servers supporting Qakbot operations and $8.6 million in cryptocurrencies. Qakbot operators rent servers to criminal groups which undertake their own attacks, typically seizing or freezing data from a target’s systems and demanding ransoms to free it up, sometimes in the millions of dollars. US Attorney Martin Estrada said the investigation showed Qakbot had infected more than 700,000 victim computers, which could then be controlled to an extent by the botnet’s administrators.
