Phl eyes joint maritime patrols with like-minded allies
The Philippines is anticipating the conduct of joint maritime patrols with its “like-minded” allies including Australia, Japan, and the United States, said Department of National Defense Undersecretary Ireneo Espino on Tuesday. Speaking at the closing ceremony of this year’s Amphibious and Land Operation exercise—the first bilateral amphibious exercise between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and Australian Defence Force at Camp Aguinaldo, Espino made mention of sustaining the existing Philippines-Australia bilateral and multilateral defense cooperation. “The DND, thus, looks forward to the succeeding iterations of exercise ALON while sustaining existing bilateral and multilateral exercises, we are of course, anticipating the conduct of joint maritime patrols with Australia in areas of common interest together with other like-minded partners like, such as Japan and the United States,” he said. Espino said ALON 2023 not only allowed the Australian and the Philippine forces, with support from US troops, to successfully conduct complex operations in response to simulated security threats “but also open avenues for more interoperability and deeper people-to-people cooperations.” “It also serves as a venue for the Philippine Navy to strengthen its national naval capabilities on maritime security while enhancing interoperability and linkages with its Australian counterparts,” he added. The exercise is part of Australia’s Indo-Pacific Endeavor or IPE, targeting international engagements with its allies in the Southeast Asian and Indian Ocean regions. “Considering that Australia is one of the only two defense partners with which the Philippines has a status of visiting forces agreement, the IPE also advances our bilateral defense correlations. Digitize, digitize, digitize
Even before the Covid-19 pandemic struck, the banking industry already had digitalization on top-of-mind discussion in board meetings. But the pandemic presented new circumstances that created an unstoppable trend that made digital banking more relevant than ever. UnionBank of the Philippines president Edwin R. Bautista said the pandemic disrupted the industry and that almost every bank, large and small, adopted digital technology and saw a spike in digital banking usage. "We are taking the digital banking approach," Bautista said in an interview with Daily Tribune. "Digitalization allows us to lower our operational costs. Now we are also leveraging the use of artificial intelligence to serve the traditionally underserved sectors because the technology now lowers the cost of servicing that sector." UnionBank's willingness to adopt digital tools and cutting-edge innovations, when needed, allowed it to expand its market reach. Its relentless pursuit to be at the forefront of digitalization, not only in the banking sector but in the Philippines, is extraordinary. The introduction of AI was a big leap for UnionBank. Bautista said, "Traditional banks will not touch the so-called unserved and underserved sectors because the cost of servicing them was too high. A big portion of the cost is the fact that it is very difficult to predict whether they will pay back or not. In the past, banks assessed credit by looking at financial statements, taxes, etc. It is more difficult for the underground economy because they have no written transaction documents." The lack of these essential documents does not mean a person cannot pay, but rather, the banks try to avoid them because of the risks. "AI helps us by putting together different information about that particular business or person, including the cash flows, sales, and other trends that are usually taken for granted by manual assessments. AI can give a prediction on the likelihood of whether they will pay you back or not, Bautista added. Indeed, UnionBank is one of the very first banks to witness the storm of digitalization. Unfortunately, many popular banks are very slow to catch up and are new to the list of digitalization. Low digital banking penetration Although the Philippines is one of the fastest-growing economies in Southeast Asia, the country has the lowest digital banking penetration of any Asian market, according to a study by McKinsey& Company. In a survey, McKinsey found that only 12 percent of Filipinos had tried Internet banking, compared with 28 percent in other developing countries of the region. “In the Philippines, 35 percent of digital consumers (defined as consumers who make purchases online) own a smartphone, but only nine percent of Filipino consumers said they had used a smartphone to bank, compared with 26 percent in developing Asia,” the study said. In addition, local banks allocate less than 10 percent of their revenues to IT, compared with nearly 15 percent among leading banks elsewhere in Asia–Pacific and digital channels account for just five to 15 percent of their income, well below the average of 25 percent for their peers in Asian emerging markets. But change is coming, Bautista said. 'No more baby steps "We have a problem if we continue taking baby steps because, by the time your development is ready, a new technology will emerge. You need to move faster and you need to take bolder actions if you want to ensure that you stay in the game," he added. In order to be competitive, Bautista said technological advances such as blockchain and AI would need to be integrated into the banking system, adding these technologies will play a critical role in the evolution of the industry. The need to modernize the banking industry's backbone, including its core banking systems, deposits and credits, will remain the most important services of a bank, he added. Bautista said that harnessing the powers of AIs, machine learning and blockchain would deliver a seamless customer experience on the front end by solving the growing intolerance of clients for glitchy apps or systems. “We don’t really know where the banking sector or technology is going to go because, to me, the AI that we see right now is not even stage one of its potential. Yet, we are already talking as if our lives will be destructed by the technology,” he said. “You can just imagine if we reach stage two or three,” Bautista added. According to Bautista, AI is going to disrupt our lives in all aspects. “We don’t know how big its impact will be, but we have to figure out how we can adapt,” he said. All told, no matter how banks utilize digital technologies or even AI, the focus on technology and constant investments in IT infrastructure across the industry is paramount to avoid the risk of being disrupted and be prepared for any disruption. Intal considers semis win over Thais in SEA Games better than UAAP titles
Winning three titles in the UAAP is already an incredible feat. But for Ateneo de Manila University product Rex Intal, those college championships pale in comparison with the ecstasy he felt when the Philippine national men’s volleyball team toppled powerhouse Thailand in the semifinals of the 30th Southeast Asian Games last year. [Related story: SEA GAMES: PHI men's volleyball team advances to the gold medal round] A member of the Nationals who captured a historic silver medal in the biennial meet, Intal considers their thrilling come-from-behind win that dethroned Thailand in the knockout semis as the most memorable game he has ever played in. “For me it was one of the best games talaga na nalaruan ko. Not the best performance pero best games na most unforgettable,” said Intal in his appearance on Volleyball DNA hosted by Anton Roxas and Denden Lazaro. “Actually most unforgettable game na talaga.” The former Blue Eagle middle went as far as saying that the victory over the Thais, which was watched by an electric crowd inside the PhilSports Arena last December, even topped the three titles he had while playing for Ateneo. “Naramdaman ko talaga na may tumalo na sa first, second and third UAAP championships. Sorry UAAP pero iba ‘yung SEA Games na naramdaman ko. Iba ang naramdaman ko nu’ng umabot kami ng Finals,” said Intal, who with PHI squad teammates Marck Espejo and Ish Polvorosa led the Blue Eagles to a UAAP grand slam from Season 77 to 79. “Individually ah, hindi 'yung combined na three UAAP championships,” cleared Intal. “Siguro kapag combined medyo same.” The Nationals faced top seed Thailand, which ruled the previous four editions, on December 8 in the crossover semis attended by a 6,700-strong crowd. The experience of playing in front of the home crowd in an all-important game that time was a surreal feeling according to Intal. “Grabe ang experience na ‘yun. Ang saya maglaro nu’ng time na ‘yun kasi first time ‘yung buong crowd hindi hiwalay,” said Intal of the atmosphere inside the venue compared to what he’s used while playing in the UAAP. “Lahat nagtsi-cheer talaga. In front of the home crowd ang sarap maglaro sa crowd na ‘yun,” he added. “Isa ‘yun sa di ko makakalimutan na experience sa buong buhay ko.” It was a dramatic win for the Nationals as they came back from a 1-2 deficit and a scary 21-24 hole in the fourth set to upset Thailand in five sets. “Nu’ng nanalo kami nung napalo na ni Bryan ang bola sigawan na kami nun,” recalled Intal, who scored six points in the match playing in four sets. “’Di kami makapaniwala. As in lahat ng boses na mayroon kami kailangan naming ilabas.” “Totoo pala na kailangan mong kurutin yung sarili mo, ‘Totoo ba ‘to? Totoo ba ‘to?’” he added. “’Yung inisip ko nun ay ‘di ‘yung natalo namin ang Thailand. Ang naisip ko was may medal na kami.” That win assured the Philippines of a silver medal for the first time since its runner-up finish in the 1977 SEA Games in Malaysia and a rematch against group stage tormentors Indonesia. The Indonesians were too much for the inexperienced Filipinos as the host team yielded in straight sets. But still, although the Nationals fell short in the gold medal round for Intal the whole SEA Games experience especially their conquest of Thailand will always be on the top of his list. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»
