Tapales eyes unified crown
World super-bantamweight king Marlon Tapales believes his current collection of two titles still feels light, alluding to his burning desire to win the remaining two. Moments after touching down in Manila on Monday morning, Tapales, the reigning World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation titlist said he is looking forward to becoming unified champion before the end of the year. The straps Tapales is aiming for are the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organization currently being held by Stephen Fulton of the United States. Fulton is risking the two crowns against Naoya Inoue on 25 July at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo. “What I have right now doesn’t feel heavy and getting the other two would feel just about right,” said Tapales, who narrowly beat Uzbekistan’s Murodjon Akhmadaliev last 8 April in San Antonio, Texas. Tapales will be at ringside to watch the much-awaited battle he wants Inoue to win. “I would like to see Inoue win that fight,” Tapales said after stepping out of the Philippine Airlines Triple Seven (Boeing 777) that took off from Los Angeles’ Tom Bradley International. The camps of Tapales and Inoue have verbally agreed to do the megabuck matchup by November or December. Inoue is promoted by Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc. and Teiken’s Akihiko Honda, acknowledged as Japan’s premier promoter. Tapales is represented by Sean Gibbons of MP Promotions and Viva Promotions and JC Mananquil of SanMan Promotions, who also arrived in the country with the two-belt champion alongside chief trainer Ernel Fontanilla, SanMan staffer Ramon Falgui and Christopher “Amen” Arias. “Golovkin will hurt Manny” - former GGG trainer Abel Sanchez weighs in potential Pacquiao bout
As talks of a potential Manny Pacquiao-Gennady Golovkin mega-bout continue to pick up steam, people have weighed in on the matter including the likes of long-time Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach and former long-time Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank Boxing. Both Roach and Arum have been less than keen, so to speak on the possible bout that would require the Filipino eight-division boxing champion to go up to a weight class that he’s never been to before. Pacquiao, the reigning WBA (Super) Welterweight World Champion, went up to as high as junior middleweight back in 2010 but even then, was significantly smaller than his opponent Antonio Margarito. Golovkin, the reigning IBF and IBO Middleweight World Champion, has been a middleweight all his career, and was at one point held four middleweight world titles at once. The Kazakh’s only loss came to Canelo Alvarez. Now, even GGG’s former long-time trainer Abel Sanchez has shared his two cents on the rumoured superfight. In an exclusive interview with Phil Jay of World Boxing News, Sanchez, who parted ways with Golovkin back in early-2019 after nine years of working together, said that the size difference would be significant. “Manny Pacquiao is a small fighter. I believe he started as a flyweight, so the size difference would make a difference,” said Sanchez. Sanchez also referenced the bout with Margarito, but added that GGG is on a different level. “I see Manny having his moments early in the fight, but Gennadiy Golovkin is no Margarito.” “Golovkin will hurt Manny,” Sanchez stated. Sanchez did give Pacquiao his props, saying that even at 41, the Pinoy boxing icon remains as a serious force in the welterweight division. “Manny, even at his advanced age, is still a very good fighter. His hand speed and experience will be a problem for most welterweights in the world," he said. .....»»
Manny Pacquiao among possible opponents for Terence Crawford s return to action later this year
Could Manny Pacquiao versus Terence Crawford happen later this year? It’s a possible scenario, according to Top Rank Boxing head honcho Bob Arum. The former long-time Pacquiao promoter says he expects Crawford, the reigning WBO Welterweight World Champion to return to action by late-2020 and the Filipino eight-division champion is on the top of the list of possible opponents. "We're going to have Terence fight in September, or October, period," Arum said in an interview with ESPN’s Steve Kim. Apart from Pacquiao (62-7-2, 39 KO) however, Arum says other options include the likes of Kell Brook, Yordenis Ugas, or Shawn Porter. "We're looking to either match him with Pacquiao, Kell Brook, Ugas or Porter." Arum has been discussing the Pacquiao-Crawford matchup a lot as of late, even bringing up the possibility of the fight taking place in the Middle East. The problem now however, is that the current COVID-19 pandemic has made it hard for venues to commit to major sporting events. "We're hamstrung because none of these [venues] want to commit to a fight this year because of the coronavirus,” said Arum. England’s Brook, (39-2, 27 KO) also poses an intriguing matchup for Crawford. The 34-year old is a former IBF Welterweight World Champion. Brook’s only losses have been at the hands of current IBF Welterweight king Errol Spence Jr. and against middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin. The only problem with Brook, Arum says, is being able to fly the Englishman to the US. "And Kell Brook, if we made [that fight], we couldn't get him here." Porter (30-3-1, 17 KO) is a two-time welterweight world champion, having held the IBF and the WBC titles in his career. Porter’s only losses have come against Spence Jr., Brook, and Keith Thurman. Ugas (25-4, 12 KO) has won ten of his last eleven bouts, with the only loss coming against Porter in a WBC world title bout. He’s coming off back-to-back wins against Omar Figueroa Jr. and Mike Dallas Jr. .....»»
‘It’s a stupid fight’ - Bob Arum says GGG fight could be dangerous for Manny Pacquiao
Add Top Rank Boxing boss Bob Arum to the list of people who aren’t too keen on seeing Manny Pacquiao go up to 160-pounds. The former long-time Pacquiao promoter shared his thoughts on the rumours of the Filipino eight-division boxing world champion wanting to possibly rule over a ninth weight class and challenge reigning IBF and IBO Middleweight World Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. “It’s a stupid fight,” Arum told Daily Mail UK's sports arm Sportsmail. 'I know Golovkin appears to be over the hill, but it’s a fight that could be very dangerous for Pacquiao.” At 38-years of age, Kazakhstan’s Golovkin (40-1-1, 35 KO) isn’t much younger than the 41-year old Pacquiao, but what makes ‘GGG’ a very dangerous matchup for the smaller Pinoy is his size and his power. While Pacquiao may possess a speed advantage, Golovkin has a tremendous chin and his knockout power is likely unlike anything that Pacquiao has seen in his career. Arum adds that even at welterweight, Pacquiao is already on the smaller side. “He isn't even a welterweight really let alone a middleweight. His best fighting weight is 140, at 147 I think he’s pretty much outsized by all the good welterweights,” said Arum. Pacquiao’s long-time coach and trainer Freddie Roach also expressed his concerns about the Filipino boxing icon going up to 160-pounds. Pacquiao has once again become a popular dream-fight target following his 2019 performances, especially against the erstwhile-undefeated Keith Thurman. Pacquiao, who was older than Thurman by a full decade during their July encounter, showed that he could still compete with the division’s best as he outboxed and outpointed the American for 12 rounds to capture the WBA (Super) Welterweight Championship. Arum believes however, that the Thurman win can’t be considered a barometer for Pacquiao’s performance. “I know he fought Keith Thurman, who had lost his desire to fight and had been out so long, but he would have a real test against Terence Crawford or Errol Spence, guys like that,” Arum stated. “Maybe he could beat them, I don’t know. He thinks he can, but to go up any higher would be silly,” he added. Arum previously discussed a possible welterweight superfight between Pacquiao and Crawford and hopes to be able to bring that to the Middle East......»»
Mikey Garcia still wants Manny Pacquiao fight, says Pac-Crawford would be big
As eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao’s boxing career presumably nears its twilight, each fight that the Filipino boxing legend has becomes more and more special. After the 41-year old’s impressive performances against Adrien Broner and Keith Thurman in 2019, many believe that Pacquiao - while no longer in his prime - can still very much hang with the best of them inside the ring. As such, a who’s who of boxing stars have been discussed as potential future Pacquiao opponents, from the likes of welterweight champions Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford, even much bigger guys like middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. Among those names, while arguably not as high-profile, is that of Mikey Garcia. Garcia has an impressive 40-1 professional record with 30 wins coming by knockout. In that 41-fight stretch, he’s managed to capture world titles in the featherweight, junior lightweight, lightweight, and welterweight divisions. He has also beaten former Pacquiao opponents in Broner and Jessie Vargas. His lone loss was against reigning IBF Welterweight World Champion Spence. Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s long-time trainer, has said that he likes the idea of a Pacquiao-Garcia matchup. Garcia, for his part, says that Pacquiao indeed remains his top target once he can return to the ring. “We haven’t discussed any names, everything got put on hold,” Garcia said in an interview with FightHype.com. “That would be my number one name, the target I would go after, but we have no clue.” Garcia admits that he has no idea as to how things might play out in the future, but maintains that he still does want a fight with “Pacman.” “Originally, we talked about it, his team was excited for it, now, being that all this happened, who knows? He might want to take something else. He might want to fight someone else. He might just decide to retire, I don’t know, I have no control over what he decides to do. But if he’s still available by the time boxing resumes, then I will definitely be excited for a fight with him.” While Garcia has long been linked to Pacquiao, a name that’s getting a lot of traction now is fellow welterweight Crawford, the reigning WBO Welterweight World Champion and one of the best pound for pound today. Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s former long-time promoter and CEO of Top Rank Boxing has spoken about the possibility of a Pacquiao-Crawford clash, and Crawford himself also has the Pinoy boxing icon in his sights. While it certainly might not do him any favors, Garcia knows just how massive a Pacquiao-Crawford bout will be. “Him and Crawford, I saw the Instagram posts, Twitter and stuff. I think that would be a big fight for both, meaning that Pacquiao - at his age - he already proved to everybody just by beating [Keith] Thurman, so people are still kind of like ‘Wow!’, surprised that that that happened the way it did.” “I think Crawford has all the skills and talent to make it an awkward, difficult fight for Pacquiao based on height and reach and his IQ, so I think it would be a great fight for both. Can Pacquiao do it one more time? After beating Thurman, can he do it again? Back-to-back against Crawford? Or is he now finally too old to do it? That’s the question,” Garcia added. The 32-year old California-native even went on to say that after the Thurman bout, he believes Pacquiao can be the one to end Crawford’s undefeated streak. “I would probably still side with Manny. A little while ago, I think Crawford would have won, but after seeing [versus Thurman], I’m kind of leaning towards Manny, and only because of what I’ve seen with Thurman. Prior to that, I would have said Crawford.” As for challenging fighters in heavier weight divisions, Garcia believes that Pacquiao has what it takes to play with the big boys, so to speak. “He’s already fought up to 154, I think two fights at 154 or right under 154, so if he wants to fight some of the bigger guys, or make them come down to 156, 154, he might be able to pull it off,” he stated. Even a crazy superfight at middleweight? Like one against GGG? “He’s done it all, so I wouldn’t be surprised. F*ck it, do it! Go for it. He’s already a legend as it is, and he’ll only be greater if he accomplishes something like that. That feat would be f*ckin’ undeniable, one of the greatest achievements in boxing,” Garcia concluded......»»
Freddie Roach advises against Manny Pacquiao going up to 160-pounds for Golovkin bout
At 41 years of age, eight-division boxing world champion and reigning WBA (Super) Welterweight World Champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao has shown that he can still hang with the best in the world. Pacquiao is coming off a masterful victory over Adrien Broner and then handed the erstwhile-undefeated Keith Thurman his first career loss to capture the WBA’s primary welterweight crown. Now, the Filipino boxing legend continues to draw attention from potential opponents. Former long-time Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank Boxing has spoken about the possibility of a massive welterweight unification bout between Pacquiao and reigning WBO Welterweight World Champion Terence “Bud” Crawford, while WBC Welterweight World Champion Errol Spence Jr. has also been touted as a possible opponent. (READ ALSO: Manny Pacquiao has been on Terence Crawford’s radar since 2015) Long-time Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach has also weighed in on some potential future Pacquiao opponents. Speaking to Chris Mannix on his DAZN podcast, Roach mentioned the likes of Mikey Garcia and Robert Garcia as fights he likes for “Pacman”. "Mikey Garcia has called him out a couple of times, I think that’s a good fight for him, of course,” Roach said. "Robert called him out on one of your shows, that made me smile because I like that fight for Manny, I think it’s a great fight.” The biggest name - literally and figuratively -being thrown around as a possible Pacquiao opponent is that of reigning IBF and IBO Middleweight World Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. "The thing is Manny maybe might want to go a little higher and fight GGG or one of those guys who is supposed to be one of the best in the world today,” Roach shared. The hard-hitting Golovkin (40-1-1, 35 KO) has ruled the 160-pound division since capturing the WBA (Regular) Middleweight Championship in 2010. Golovkin went on to rack up 17 more wins and capture the WBO, WBC, and IBF titles to become, at one point, the undisputed middleweight champion of the world. Golovkin suffered his lone loss against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in 2018. Since then, ‘GGG’ had reclaimed the IBF crown and captured the IBO crown. "There are always good fights out there. The one thing about Manny is he doesn’t want to beat anybody, he wants to beat the best out there. He wants to fight the top guys," Roach said. "Pacquiao still desires to be the best there is,” Roach added. A match-up with Golovkin would require Pacquiao to jump up to at over at least 154-pounds. The heaviest that Pacquiao has gone in his career is 144.6-pounds when he defeated Antonio Margarito for the WBC Super Welterweight World Championship back in 2010. Pacquiao has since remained at welterweight for the remainder of his career. "I would not advise him to go 160-pounds, that would be a little crazy. But putting him at 147 lbs was a risk at one time," Roach stated. A dream match against the much bigger Golovkin could bring Pacquiao his unparalleled ninth world title in as many weight divisions, but it’s not without its risks.
