PVL: Cool Smashers shoot for Final Four seat

Fancied defending champion Creamline seeks to formalize its stint in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference semifinals in Iloilo Saturday as it faces a sister team ChocoMucho at the University of San Agustin gym. Game time is at 4:00 p.m. and will air live on LIGA SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD SkyCable Channel 183, iWant and via livestream. The Cool Smashers stake their unbeaten 11-0 slate against the surging Flying Titans Though the star-studded Cool Smashers are tipped to repeat their four-set triumph over the Flying Titans last Aug. 31, the latter have shown tremendous improvement and promise after snapping a long skid with a scrambling five-set escape over Chef’s Classics then beating BaliPure, BanKo-Perlas, PacificTown Army and Motolite to bounce back into semis contention. They remain outside of the Magic Four with a 6-6 card but their recent surge has bolstered their chances to grab at least a playoff for the last semis slot with Motolite and BanKo-Perlas just ahead at joint third with 7-5 slates and PacificTown Army at fifth with a 6-5 mark. PetroGazz is a cinch to clinch the second semis seat with an 8-2 mark. But Choco Mucho’s vaunted triple town combination of Kat Tolentino, Maddie Madayag and Bea de Leon must come up with one solid game to neutralize Creamline's vaunted firepower anchored on Alyssa Valdez, Michele Gumabao, Jema Galanza and Risa Sato......»»

Volleyball community unites for Jovelyn Gonzaga’s nephew

National team hitter Jovelyn Gonzaga was thankful for the overwhelming support from fellow volleyball players and volleyball fans for her nephew who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. The local volleyball community united to extend financial help for Gonzaga’s three-year old nephew Calix Vander or CV.      “Sobrang overwhelming ng volleyball community,” said the opposite hitter on Thursday during the welcome dinner for the ASEAN Grand Prix second leg in Crimson Hotel in Alabang. “Ang dami nga nagme-message na ganito lang ang maitutulong ko. Walang konting tulong, pag pinagsama-sama ‘yun napakalaking bagay. And prayers, sabi ko prayers niyo napakalaking bagay na ‘yun para sa pamangkin ko.” Hi VB Community! We are organizing another jersey auction for ate @JOVZKIE08 and her nephew, Calix Vander, who's been recently diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. This auction will be participated in by both PSL and PVL players. Hope we can all support this cause. ????????? pic.twitter.com/eE8eyOAeKW — Carmela Tunay (@carmelaloo08) October 3, 2019 Gonzaga said that CV had undergone numerous check-ups the past month and was hospitalized for two weeks before the doctors found out that it was leukemia. “Almost more than a month na ‘yung check-ups niya tapos na-hospital na rin siya for more than two weeks, muntik na nga akong hindi sumama ng Thailand (ASEAN Grand Prix first leg) kasi gusto ko siyang tutukan pero hindi pwede kasi may commitment ako kata tuluy-tuloy ang monitor ko sa kanya,” said Gonzaga. “At that time ang dami niyang test eh,” continued the enlisted Army personnel. “Kasi unang finding sa kanya, may namuong bukol sa heart niya pero doon na na-find out na may problema siya sa dugo. So ang daming test, bone marrow test, biopsy and all. Hanggang sa nalaman na may leukemia.” It was her friends Carmela Tunay of Petron and Cignal teammate Rachel Anne Daquis who started a fund-raising campaign for CV.    “Thankful ako kasi that time mga two weeks pa lang na-admit si CV, nag-message na si Mela sa akin,” said Gonzaga. “Sobrang blessing ni Mela at ni ate Rachel Daquis.” “Actually sila talaga ‘yung nagri-reach out sa akin na, ‘ate, if ever gusto mong magpa-auction’ kasi dati nagpa-acution na rin siya para kay Ian Larriba,” Gonzaga added. “So sabi ko sa kanya, ‘sige beh lapitan kita’ kasi that time wala pang final confirmation sa sakit ng pamangkin ko eh.’” Daquis, according to Gonzaga, has been helping her since CV got sick. Gonzaga said that her brother, CV’s father, will open a bank account on Friday where people can deposit their donations and will post the details on her social media account......»»

PetroGazz looks to maintain its scorching winning run as it tries to get back at first round tormentor BanKo on Wednesday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. Now facing the Perlas Spikers anew, PetroGazz is very much motivated to settle an old score. “Yung time na ‘yun medyo erratic pa yung galaw namin, di pa ganoon ka-consistent. PVL: Lady Jet Spikers record fifth win in a row

Soaring Philippine Air Force caught BanKo flatfooted to cruise to its fifth straight win, 26-24, 25-8, 25-21, on Sunday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. With veteran setter Wendy Semana distributing the ball well for the Lady Jet Spikers' balanced scoring, Air Force exacted revenge on its first round tormentor to even its win-loss record to 5-5.   “Tabla na, babawi kami five-five pero hindi kami hihinto, dire-diretso pa rin kami. Padayon lang, tuluy-tuloy lang,” said Lady Jet Spikers coach Jasper Jimenez. Semana tallied 23 excellent sets that helped Air Force smash 44 attacks. Joy Cases had an all-around performance with 15 points, all but one coming off attacks and added 15 digs, while the towering Dell Palomata scored 14 markers off 12 spikes and two kill blocks for the Lady Jet Spikers. May Ann Pantino registered 13 points while Judy Ann Caballejo had eight points for Air Force, which got 21 free points off the BanKo’s 21 errors including the game-clinching attack miscue by Sue Roces. The Lady Jet Spikers used the momentum of their first set escape to control the match. Down, 22-24, Air Force scored four unanswered points to steal the opening frame. An 8-1 start gave the Lady Jet Spikers full control of the second set, which they went on to win in just 18 minutes.  Air Force broke the game open midway in the third set and moved at match point, 24-19, before the Perlas Spilkers saved two points. It would only delay the inevitable, as Roces surrendered the game with an attack error. BanKo fell to 6-4 slate tied with PacificTown Army. Dzi Gervacio was the only Perlas Spikers in double figures with 10 points while Nicole Tiamzon finished with nine.     --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

PVL: Perlas Spikers shoot down Flying Titans for second straight win

BanKo stunned ChocoMucho in straight sets, 25-18, 25-20, 25-23, on Wednesday to string its first back-to-back wins in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. After a shaky start in the season-ending conference, the Perlas Spikers finally got their groove going to improve to 4-2 win-loss record. Kathy Bersola displayed her dominance at the net with 10 attack points and five kill blocks for 15 points while Dzi Gervacio hammered all of her 13 markers on spikes while adding 13 digs and seven excellent receptions for BanKo. Nicole Tiamzon chipped in 11 for the Perlas Spikers, who wrapped up the match in one hour and 25 minutes. BanKo did its assignment on defense as it clamped down on ChocoMucho’s top hitter Kat Tolentino, who was limited to only eight points. The Perlas Spikers admitted that the result came as a surprise considering that the Flying Titans came off a tightly-contested five-set loss to PacificTown Army last week before beating Chef’s Classics.   “Siyempre nu’ng nakita namin games nila sa Army sobrang pukpukan. Talagang long rallies talaga and yun nga I think on our part sabay-sabay lahat na maganda ang laro.” After dominating the opening set, the Perlas Spikers went down 5-11 to start the second frame before BanKo sparked a red-hot rally to turn the tables around and take a 2-0 match lead. ChocoMucho threatened to extend the duel after chipping away a 20-15 deficit to just 21-20. Tiamzon stopped the bleeding but the Flying Titans closed in again, 24-23, off a score by Maddie Madayag before setter Jem Ferrer put the game away with a 1-2 play. Madayag was the only ChocoMucho player in double figures with 15 points. The Flying Titans dropped to 2-2 card tied with PetroGazz.   ---      Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»
