Subscription plan promises boosted replies at X, formerly Twitter
X on Friday unveiled a $16-a-month subscription plan allowing users who pay more to get the biggest boost for their replies posted at the platform formerly known as Twitter. The "Premium+" plan is ad-free and designed to provide "the largest reply boost" at X, the company said in a post. The plan builds on features offered in a Blue subscription plan costing $3 monthly and a Premium Plan priced at $8 monthly, according to X. Listed features of Premium+ include a blue tick next to names in profiles along with "a visible ID verification label," according to X. The platform recently started charging new users in New Zealand and the Philippines for basic features such as posting messages in a trial aimed at reducing spam. Musk has suggested charging all X users, but the idea was widely panned. Industry analysts said it would make X even less appealing to advertisers. Musk has made a number of controversial changes to the social media firm's management and product since he acquired Twitter a year ago for $44 billion. In the days after his purchase, Musk quickly fired many Twitter executives and took the publicly traded company private. He also laid off most of the San Francisco-based company's workers, cutting ranks to fewer than 1,500 from 8,000. In the months following his takeover, Musk gutted content moderation, restored accounts of previously banned extremists, and allowed users to purchase account verification, helping them profit from viral -- but often inaccurate -- posts. Musk defended such changes in the name of free speech. Over the past year, the platform's advertising business partially collapsed as marketers soured on X. Musk started charging for features once free at Twitter, such as blue tick marks originally intended as badges of authenticity, in an effort to make money from subscriptions. X is tinkering with video and audio calling at the platform formerly known as Twitter, according to a recent post by Musk. Musk in July rebranded Twitter as X, saying it would become an "everything app" inspired by China's WeChat that would allow users to socialize as well as handle their finances. Dark side of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence, or AI, has undeniably revolutionized various aspects of our lives, from enhancing industry efficiency to providing personalized recommendations. However, as AI continues to evolve, it brings with it a set of challenges and ethical concerns. One of the alarming trends is the use of AI-generated impostors in advertisements, creating a ripple effect that negatively impacts individuals, public trust, and the very fabric of authenticity in our society. The use of AI-generated impostors in advertising has become a growing concern, exemplified by the case of award-winning Hollywood actor Tom Hanks, who complained about a video advertisement he said he had nothing to do with. In this digital age, where AI algorithms can seamlessly replicate the appearance and even the voice of well-known figures, the lines between reality and simulation blur. Advertisements featuring these AI-generated impostors can mislead the audience, leading to unintended consequences. When AI-generated impostors are used in advertisements, the first casualty is the reputation of the individuals being impersonated. In the case of Tom Hanks, a beloved figure in the entertainment industry, the use of his likeness in deceptive advertisements not only damages his personal brand but also creates confusion and mistrust among his fanbase. Fans may find it challenging to distinguish between genuine endorsements and those featuring AI-generated impostors, eroding the authenticity that defines a celebrity’s connection with their audience. The broader consequence of AI-generated impostors in advertising is the erosion of public trust. As consumers become increasingly skeptical of the content they encounter, distinguishing between real and simulated information becomes daunting. This erosion of trust extends beyond the realm of advertising, impacting how people perceive information in general. The pervasive use of AI-generated content contributes to a culture of suspicion and skepticism, hindering meaningful communication and undermining the foundation of a trustworthy society. The use, therefore, of AI-generated impostors raises significant ethical concerns, particularly regarding consent. Celebrities and public figures have a right to control the use of their likeness, and AI-generated content often circumvents these rights. The creation and deployment of AI-generated advertisements featuring impostors may occur without the knowledge or consent of the individuals being impersonated. This not only violates their privacy but also challenges the ethical boundaries of technological advancements. Beyond the immediate impact on individuals and public trust, the prevalence of AI-generated impostors in advertising has cultural and social ramifications. As our interactions with AI become more commonplace, the blurring of authenticity in media content challenges our perception of reality. This distortion can influence societal values and norms, making it imperative to address the ethical implications of AI in advertising to safeguard the integrity of our cultural landscape. To mitigate the adverse effects of AI-generated impostors in advertising, there must first be increased awareness and education about AI-generated content’s existence and potential consequences. This includes educating consumers about the technology and its potential misuse in the advertising landscape. There is a need for stricter regulations governing the use of AI in advertising, especially when it involves the likeness of public figures. Clear guidelines on obtaining consent, disclosing the use of AI-generated content, and enforcing penalties for violations can help protect individuals and maintain the public’s trust. While, indeed, AI holds immense potential to transform various aspects of our lives positively, its misuse, as seen in the case of AI-generated impostors in advertising, poses serious challenges. The negative effects extend beyond individual reputations, impacting public trust, ethical standards, and cultural values. As we navigate this digital era, it is crucial to address these issues proactively through a combination of education, regulation, and ethical considerations. Only through a concerted effort can we ensure that the power of AI is harnessed responsibly, preserving the authenticity and trust that underpins a healthy and vibrant society. Ninong Ry on giving A twist to popular dishes: Preference over authenticity
At the recent launch of Ninong Ry (real name: Ryan Reyes) as the first-ever celebrity endorser of the food seasoning brand Knorr Professional, the chef and YouTuber showcased his culinary skills and sense of humor that have endeared him to his over two million online followers. He gave an interactive cooking demo on how he puts his own twist to the universal favorite food, fried chicken, and the Pinoy specialty dish, sisig, using the brand’s liquid seasoning and chicken powder. While doing his tasks, he also dispensed some tips and answered a few questions from media representatives and other guests from the foodservice sector. For the fried chicken, Ninong Ry used the brining process of soaking proteins in a solution of salty water and spices overnight to infuse flavor and tenderize the meat. He then deep fried the already prepared chicken parts to golden brown perfection. To the question about using an air fryer instead, he replied, “Puwede naman, although kailangan mo s’yang i-turn. Kailangan mo s’yang i-thermometer talaga (It’s possible, but you need to turn the meat over. You need to use a thermometer.) Meaning, you have to be mindful of uneven cooking. “Ultimately in the end, mas matrabaho pa s’ya at mas magastos pa s’ya sa deep fryer (It takes more effort and money).” In making his own version of sisig, Ninong Ry incorporated his current fascination on curing and smoking meat to come up with a type of bacon. He confessed being inspired by the Three-Way Sisig of JP Anglo, the chef and owner of Sarsa restaurant. “Technically Knorr seasoning is a flavorful liquid na meron kang asin (there’s already salt),” he pointed out. “Dadagdagan ko na lang ng curing salt. Dadagdagan ko lang ng asukal para sweet cured. Kasi ’yun naman ang gusto natin sa bacon (I’ll just add curing salt. I’ll just add sugar to make it sweet. That’s what we like in bacon.).” He then showed the cured meat, which he had already smoked for four hours, and cut into sisig-sized pieces. “Ang tingin ko sa sisig (I look at sisig as), salad,” he quipped. construction n’ya ay parang salad. Ang ingredients and’yan na, just mix them all together. (Because the construction is like in salad. The ingredients are all there.) It’s the salad that I want. “Kung salad s’ya, dapat ang tingin natin, madali lang gawin. Hindi s’ya magtrabaho, pang-restaurant lang. Kung kaya n’yong gumawa ng salad sa bahay, kaya n’yo gumawa ng sisig (If it’s salad, we have to see it something easy to do. It’s not labor-intensive, just for restaurants to do. If you can make a salad at home, you can make sisig).” [caption id="attachment_192641" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Pork sisig.[/caption] He then added the other ingredients, such as red and white onion, green chilies, liver spread (or mashed chicken liver, if it’s your preference), crispy garlic and a dash of black pepper. “Kung gusto n’yong maglagay ng mayonnaise, labas ako d’yan, (If you want to put mayonnaise, I’m out of it,” he said, laughing. “Maglalagay ako ng konting sugar.” (I’ll put a bit of sugar.) “This is very far from the original. But I like it,” he explained. “Pero hindi na pinagpipilitan natin. (What we’ll not force it) For me, preference over authenticity.” Here’s another piece of advice for aspiring chefs: “Huwag tayong balat-sibuyas. (Don’t be onion-skinned) Minsan, pag di nagustuhan ang luto natin (Sometimes when our dish is not liked), we take offense. Kasi parang ang sakit-sakit no’n. (Because sit seems hurtful.) But it’s nothing personal. Talagang kailangan mo lang tigasan ang mukha mo minsan (Sometimes you just have to be thick-skinned).” He then shared a realization that has helped him deal with online bashing: “Nagtrabaho kasi ako sa isang (I worked in a) restaurant before moving to social media. So nakita ko ang parallel do’n, e. (I saw the parallelism). Pag may kumain sa restaurant n’yo at hindi nagustuhan ang pagkain, susuntukin mo ba? (If a diner didn’t like the food, will you punch him?) Hindi naman, e. (Not really.) Tatanggapin mo ang sinabi n’ya (You’ll accept what they said), but at the same time, tatanggapin mo pa rin ang pera n’ya (You’ll still accept their payment.) Nagbigay lang s’ya ng hindi magandang (They only gave a not-so nice) comment. Negosyo ’to, e. (It’s a business.) “Ngayon, nasa (Now, I’m in) social media ako. Technically speaking, hindi ako nagse-serve ng pagkain, pero ang produkto ko, videos. (I don’t serve food, but my product is in video form.) ’Yung mga viewers ko, hindi sila nagbayad (My viewers don’t pay), but gamit ang pinakamahal na (but they use the most precious) commodity, which is your time. So kapag nagbayad s’ya, puwede s’yang magsabi ng bagay towards sa ’yo, at kailangan mong tanggapin ’yun.” (If they pay you, they can say things to you and you need to accept it.) Italy embassy absolves PIASI
The Embassy of Italy in the Philippines has vouched for the authenticity of the visa denial letters issued by its third-party service provider to Filipino job applicants “scammed” by Alpha Assistenza SRL. Responding to DAILY TRIBUNE’s query, the embassy said the possibility of the Philippine Interactive Audiotext Services Inc. or PIASI being in cahoots with the scammers is “extremely unlikely.” “In the course of our fruitful and long-standing cooperation with PIASI, we have never received any kind of complaint nor had any reason to doubt the correctness and transparency of their work,” said Consular Officer Matteo Mascia, who heads the embassy’s visa office. PIASI, Mascia said, is “limited to receiving visa applications and forwarding them to our office, without therefore being able to express any kind of judgment on the files themselves or on the attached documentation, which are processed and analyzed exclusively by embassy staff.” “It is therefore clear, without in any way detracting from the work carried out by our collaborators, that these are tasks of a constrained and rather mechanical nature, which leave very little room for maneuver for any ill-intentioned infiltrators within the ranks of the company in question,” he added. Mascia reiterated that all visa procedures are “scrupulously tracked, and the income received by PIASI [is] duly accounted for.” He said that none of the information they had received from the allegedly defrauded applicants pointed to any misconduct on the part of PIASI. Likewise, the rejection letters received by the visa applicants, who were provided bogus nulla osta or work permits by Alpha Assistenza, were genuine, Mascia pointed out. “The attached rejection letter appears to be a copy of a decision actually produced by our office,” he said. Nonetheless, Mascia said, “the alleged irregularities raised (e.g., the visa applicant’s name had been entered by hand) are indeed an exception to the standard format for national visa refusals (Type D) drawn up by this office,” he added. “The use of such format is necessary for reasons of time-saving, given the high (and unusual) number of rejections that our office has to produce within a few days, thus making it preferable to adopt a pre-printed form that is subsequently filled in with the applicant’s salient data, the protocol number and the round stamp of the embassy, and then signed, as required by Italian law, by the head of the office that adopted the act or by a person delegated by him/her.” The 21 September episode of DAILY TRIBUNE’s Usapang OFW show interviewed several complainants against Alpha Assistenza headed by co-CEOs Krizelle Respicio and Frederick Dutaro. They decried the alleged slow action of the Philippine consulate in Milan to the complaints of their sponsors in Italy. The post Italy embassy absolves PIASI appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Cato: Alpha in crosshairs of Phl lawyers, Italian TF
The Italian government has created a task force to assist the Filipino victims of Alpha Assistenza SRL, an immigration consultancy firm that allegedly duped over 400 Filipinos, the Philippine Consulate General in Milan announced Monday. According to Consul General Elmer Cato, the task force was created on 4 September after meeting with Prefect Renato Saccone, Milan’s highest-ranking Italian federal government representative. Cato said he requested Saccone’s assistance in verifying the authenticity of the Italian work permits the consulate gathered from complainants and witnesses in Italy and the Philippines. After the documents were determined to be spurious, Cato said the Prefect immediately created the task force that would assist complainants in filing the appropriate cases against those involved. The task force will work closely with lawyers provided by the Philippine government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Migrant Workers. Cato said the consulate expects several Filipinos to formally file their complaints this week. Last week, DFA Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs Eduardo de Vega flew to Milan to meet with the victims who accused the Philippine consulate general in Milan of ignoring their grievances. Cato has denied sitting on their complaints. The development came as the Department of Justice vowed to deliver justice to the victims who were only after greener pastures in the European country. Meanwhile, DFA Assistant Secretary Paul Cortes said the Filipino complainants in Italy and the Philippines will file separate charges against Alpha Assistenza SRL and another firm. “Cases against them have yet to be filed, which is why our fellow Filipinos in the Philippines are asking for assistance from the DMW, as well as from our embassy and consulate there, to determine whether those who victimized them really have culpability,” Cortez said in a public briefing. “Because we are sure that those who defrauded them have partners in Italy. So we’re working both ways to file cases in Italy and here in the Philippines,” he added. The post Cato: Alpha in crosshairs of Phl lawyers, Italian TF appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
NOW Telecom appeals to SC over ‘erroneous’ NTC fine
NOW Telecom Inc. of businessman Mel Velarde has elevated its appeal to the Supreme Court or SC to settle the alleged P2.6 billion in spectrum regulatory fees or SRF and associated charges it allegedly owes the National Telecommunications Commission or NTC. The company, through a 22-page comment dated 1 September 2023 filed before the SC, pointed out that the regulatory fees and penalties imposed were "erroneous" and needed to be recomputed. NOW Telecom is disputing the NTC's calculation, which was based on the total capital stock of P13.57 billion instead of the subscribed and paid-up capital of P1.39 billion. The company pointed out that the additional paid-in capital of P12.17 billion should be excluded from the computation. Thus, it requested the High Court to order NTC to recompute the SRF and base it solely on its capital stock of P1.39 billion and set aside the regulator's letters assessments dated 5 July 2025, and 23 December 2005. Additionally, the company also asked the SC to delete the imposition of any penalty and interest. “We are confident that this SRF issue will be finally resolved. NOW Telecom continues to appeal to the Marcos administration to (maintain) a level playing field, for NOW to compete head-on with China Telecom/DITO and Huawei-equipped SMART and GLOBE,” Velarde said in a press statement on Tuesday. NOW Telecom also contended that the NTC's reference to a COA letter was flawed due to discrepancies. The COA letter claims over P3 billion in unresolved receivables that spanned 14 years. "The crucial COA Letter was conspicuously absent from NTC's official documents, replaced by correspondence with the Office of the Solicitor General, casting doubts on the authenticity of the claim," it added. NOW Telecom additionally said that "the staggering amount imposed by the NTC as penalties and interest does not align with the purpose of the law." "As the term itself implies, the amount of the SRF collected is supposed to be commensurate to, and is simply intended to reimburse the NTC for the costs it incurs in supervising and regulating the telecommunications industry," the company said, adding that the SRF is not a tax or a revenue-raising measure. Last June, it can be recalled that the Securities and Exchange Commission or SEC fined NOW Corp. and Velarde P1 million each for allegedly “misleading disclosures” about the P2.6-billion unpaid obligation of affiliate company NOW Telecom to the government. In a seven-page order dated 15 June 2023, the SEC affirmed that NOW Corp. and Velarde were administratively liable for violating the Securities Regulation Code or SRC for disclosing misleading information to the public. The disclosure in question was the one posted on 10 November 2021, which stated that NOW Corp. was unaware of the details surrounding the motions filed by the NTC with the SC. The SEC pointed out that as one of the concurrent key officials of both NOW Corp. and NOW Telecom, Velarde is “considered to have ipso facto participated in the transactions” relating to the unpaid SRF and SUF liability of NOW Telecom. DMW, DoJ get Alpha ‘scam’ probe going
The Department of Migrant Workers or DMW yesterday vowed to endorse to the Department of Justice for possible prosecution the complaints of about 400 Filipinos allegedly duped of about 3,000 euros each (roughly P181,000) by Italy-based “immigration consultancy” firm Alpha Assistenza SRL. Accompanied by DAILY TRIBUNE’s Usapang OFW, 18 of the complainants narrated to DMW for hours their and their sponsors’ harrowing experiences in losing their hard-earned money to Alpha Assistenza co-CEOs Krizelle Respicio and Frederick Dutaro. Usapang OFW broke the “massive scam” in an episode that aired on 21 September that was, thereafter, followed by a series of articles that exposed the alleged modus operandi of the owners of the firm who boasted of close ties with a Philippine official in Italy. The paper has reached out to the official and is awaiting his response to the complainants’ claim that his office has been sitting on the complaints filed by their sponsors in Italy. As this developed, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla told DAILY TRIBUNE and Usapang OFW that he would personally look into the complaints upon receipt of the DMW’s endorsement to the DoJ. The DoJ oversees the National Bureau of Investigation, as well as the government’s prosecutorial service. At the DMW, Directors Geraldine Mendez and Eric Dorig Dollete of the agency’s Migrant Workers Protection Bureau said that, aside from endorsing the complaints to the DoJ-NBI, they would also organize a fact-finding mission to Italy. Mendez and Dollete added that they would mobilize DMW’s Migrant Workers Office and Assistance-to-Nationals unit in Italy even as they assured the complainants of legal assistance. Several senators have expressed dismay over what may turn out to be one of the biggest illegal recruitment cases in the country, with a couple of lawmakers planning to call an investigation into the matter. DivinaLaw had pledged to look into the complainants’ plight. With an average fee of 3,000 euros paid by each of the complainants to Alpha Assistenza, the total amount the 400 “victims” could recover may amount to 1,200,000 euro or P72,367,182.40 at the exchange rate prevailing as of 25 September. Lawyers interviewed by TRIBUNE said the complaints may amount to a syndicated crime, the exact nature of which, they said, would be borne by the facts that must be established by investigating agencies like the NBI. The complainants said they had brought to the attention of various government agencies as early as July the purported use by Alpha Assistenza of fake work permit documents that resulted in their visa applications being denied. They also noted “irregularities” in the handling of their visa applications by the Philippine Interactive Audiotext Services Inc., or PIASI, including at least one instance of fees being paid in a coffee shop on the ground floor of the building where the PIASI office is located. [caption id="attachment_188905" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Bogus, too? A purported letter from the Italian Embassy explains why the visa application was denied on account of fake supporting documents. The letter, however, looks dubious as the name of the applicant was handwritten and not typed.[/caption] PIASI is the third-party service provider accredited by the Italian Embassy in Manila. The complainants had told Daily Tribune that they were afraid for their relatives and friends currently working in Italy who had sponsored them in good faith. The sponsors face the possibility of being thrown out of the country, they said, just because they (job seekers) were provided fake documents by Alpha Assistenza. Eight of the 18 complainants told DMW that their passports were still with an Alpha Assistenza agent despite their visas already having been denied. “(The agent) took our passports, telling us that she would be the one to represent us in the processing of our papers. We have been asking her to return our passports but it has been more than a month, and we still don’t have them,” one victim recounted. They also questioned the authenticity of the visa denial documents that they had received from PIASI as their names were merely handwritten in what appeared to be “fill-in-the-blanks” letters. Meanwhile, two OFWs in Italy interviewed by DAILY TRIBUNE said one of two Italian lawyers featured by Alpha Assistenza on its Facebook page as officials of the company is suing Respicio for making the false claim. They said that the Italian supplier of the video wall used during the Philippine Independence Day celebration in Italy had also complained of being paid only about half of the 26,000 euros owed him. Pre-historic Tell al-Sultan site added to world heritage list
The United Nations' cultural organization inscribed the pre-historic site of Tell al-Sultan, near the Palestinian city of Jericho in the occupied West Bank, on its World Heritage List Sunday. Tell al-Sultan, which predates Egypt's pyramids, is an oval-shaped tell, or mound, located in the Jordan Valley that contains the prehistoric deposits of human activity. The UNESCO decision, which was posted by the organization on X, formerly Twitter, was taken at its 45th World Heritage Committee meeting held in Riyadh. "The property proposed for nomination is the prehistoric archaeological site of Tell al-Sultan, located outside the antique site of Jericho," UNESCO's assistant director general, Ernesto Ottone, said at the session. The site was inscribed following a three-year candidacy "during which no state party raised any objections", said a diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to the media. "There are no Jewish or Christian remains found at the (Tell al-Sultan) site. It's a place of pre-historic remains," the diplomat told AFP. Israel quit the UN organization in 2019 over accusations it fosters an anti-Israel bias but sent a delegation to this year's meeting in Saudi Arabia. The Palestinian Authority, acknowledged by the United Nations as a non-member observer state, welcomed the listing of the Tell al-Sultan site. Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas said he considered the decision to inscribe Tell al-Sultan "a matter of great importance and evidence of the authenticity and history of the Palestinian people". He vowed that the Palestinian authorities would "continue to preserve this unique site for all humanity", according to a statement from his office. Diverse Palestinian heritage UNESCO's listing shows that the Tell al-Sultan site is "an integral part of the diverse Palestinian heritage of exceptional human value", Palestinian tourism minister Rula Maayah, who was attending the meeting in Riyadh, said in a statement. Given Tell al-Sultan's "importance as the oldest fortified city in the world... it deserves to be a World Heritage Site," she said. "A permanent settlement had emerged here by the 9th to 8th millennium BC due to the fertile soil of the oasis and easy access to water," UNESCO said on its website. UNESCO said the "skulls and statues found on the site" testify to cultic practices among the neolithic population there, while the early bronze age archaeological material shows signs of urban planning. "Vestiges from the middle bronze age reveal the presence of a large Canaanite city-state occupied by a socially complex population," UNESCO added. The Tell al-Sultan site has been under excavation for over a century and is billed as the oldest continuously inhabited settlement on the planet, Palestinian official Wafa news agency reported. It is the fourth Palestinian site to be listed on UNESCO's World Heritage list, alongside the Church of the Nativity and the Old City of Hebron. Israel has occupied the West Bank -- now home to some three million Palestinians -- since the 1967 Six-Day War, when it also seized the Gaza Strip, the densely populated coastal enclave it has since withdrawn from. The Palestinians want these territories for their future state, along with annexed east Jerusalem as its capital. Jericho is one of the oldest inhabited cities on the planet and is a major tourist destination in the Palestinian territories. UNESCO urged for the protection of other archaeological sites in Jericho. "The other archaeological sites located in Jericho, covering among other Jewish and Christian heritage, also have important historical interest and deserve to be preserved as well," said Ottone. Archaeology is a highly political subject in Israel and the Palestinian territories, and some discoveries have been used to justify the territorial claims of each people. Intramuros, citadel of an empire (1)
My appreciation of arts and culture began when I was assigned by the Commission on Audit as the first resident auditor of the Intramuros Administration, or IA, then headed by Dr. Jaime C. Laya. It was our distinct honor and privilege to have worked with Dr. Laya, who was highly admired for his honesty and integrity. His presence in the workplace brought trust, grace and efficiency. He was the chief implementor of the mandates to restore and develop Intramuros as a monument to the Hispanic period of Philippine history, to restore its general appearance to conform to the Spanish architecture of the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries, and to sponsor, conduct or otherwise assist and support festivals and cultural activities. Knowing the functions of the agency under audit helped me to review intelligently the economy and effectiveness of the utilization of government resources in the implementation of the mandates to restore the walls of Intramuros, the authenticity of the works it was acquiring, and the cost-effectiveness of the acquisitions. The continuing process of examining things of the past and imbibing into my consciousness bits of knowledge about the makings, the ages, and colors of the porcelain antiques of the Ming and Sung dynasties, the religious relics, the artifacts, the paintings of Luna, Hidalgo, Amorsolo and Castañeda, the archaeological findings, of the rare and ancient books, of the music of various ages and classes of our indigenous peoples, of the architectural and sculptural designs displayed by our own artists in this particular form of discipline — in totality constituted a singular quality of distinction that was uniquely beautiful and globally interesting to behold. The whole process of assimilation enabled me to equip myself with the necessary tools to create my own forms of art out of the stored knowledge that is both teachable and writable for the education and pleasure of man and the Greater Glory of God. President Ferdinand Edralin Marcos founded the Intramuros Administration on 10 April 1979, not only to restore the walls of the oldest city of Intramuros but to perpetuate the memory of the citadel of the only Catholic Empire in Asia. Intramuros was primarily a fortress. How it was built and how it withstood the battle during the Japanese occupation in the Second World War is a fascinating story. The decision of the Japanese Imperial Army during the Second World War to make their last stand in Intramuros against the Allied Forces in the Philippines was a tribute to the formidability of the old walled city as the strongest fortification built by Spain in Asia. The Japanese Army had a worthy commander, Rear Admiral Sanji Iwabuchi, a graduate of the Imperial Japanese Navy Academy in 1915. In 1937, he was promoted to captain and given command of the battleship Kirishima on 20 April 1942. On 15 November 1942, his forces engaged the US Navy in the Second Naval Battle of Guadalcanal where his battleship Kirishima was sunk but not after it had sunk two US battleships and eight cruisers — a major one-sided triumph for the Japanese Imperial Naval Command which promoted Iwabuchi to Rear Admiral. He was given command of the 11th fleet, in charge of the Japanese defense of Guadalcanal against the United States. General Yamashita later gave him a direct order to withdraw and report to him and not to proceed to Manila. He refused, citing his shame over having lost his Kirishima. He believed he could redeem that loss by holding his position in Intramuros to the death. Before the start of hostilities, Rear Admiral Sanji Iwabuchi addressed his men: “We are very glad and grateful for the opportunity to serve our country in this epic battle. Now with what strength remains, we will daringly engage the enemy. Banzai to the Emperor! We are determined to fight to the last man.” (To be continued) The post Intramuros, citadel of an empire (1) appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Mind twist
It was the “Isip Bata” segment on “It’s Showtime” that got the show in trouble recently with the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board. The MTRCB on Monday, 4 September, issued its decision to suspend ABS-CBN’s noontime show for 12 airing days over its 25 July episode. So what happened in that episode that got flagged? It was the icing-licking moment between hosts Vice Ganda and Ion Perez that was the “alleged indecent act.” “Isip bata” in English means having the mind of a child. To people’s eyes, however, the actions of the hosts were neither childish nor childlike, knowing their real-life relationship. The MTRCB explained that what others saw as being “too strict” — viewers who probably did not like the idea of missing the entertainment that It’s Showtime delivers — “multiple viewers had filed complaints regarding the episode’s Isip Bata segment.” This latest showbiz fracas brings to mind a talk delivered by Canadian writer Malcolm Gladwell at the SMX Convention Center Manila on the same day the MTRCB issued its decision. The rare opportunity to listen to the famed author in person highlighted the kickoff of SM’s 65th-anniversary celebration. As keynote speaker of SM Supermalls’ Tenant-Partners Summit, Gladwell shared his thoughts on what makes the new generation tick, in the context of a social movement as it affects retail and business. The mall management had also invited Emma Chiu, global director of Wunderman Thompson, a creative agency, to deliver her trend report in this “age of anxiety,” as she stated at the beginning of her 20-minute talk. One thing that stood out that afternoon was this: The world is not the same, and we must understand it in order to navigate it. Gladwell was right to point out that there is neither better nor worse in the disparities we see nowadays. In other words, the old versus the new generations is not a battle — it should be understood as being different and taken to inspire people to create. The social media age can be reviewed from the last two decades, when the young generation today was being molded in a world without borders, as they say. The youth today make decisions based on different triggers, valuing experience, connection, and inclusivity more than anything. Gladwell thinks “it’s because the world they grew up in had no spontaneity.” He cites a list of 21 rules he saw in a playground, where one might imagine kids learning to be less “joyful” and carefree as compared to those kids who grew up surviving bumps and bruises and scratches in kindergarten. In a “world far more controlled, far more regulated,” Gladwell said, people “crave a return to this kind of mass participation, a shared common cultural experience.” To the youth, brands or wealth have less influence than spontaneity and authenticity. And why is spontaneity so prized? The “spontaneity makes it feel real,” the writer summed up. In a world constantly in flux, how we shape young minds still matters even though our world today shows these same minds are no longer influenced by the same rules. AI and business: Insights from UPMG Philippines confab
The United Print Multimedia Group Philippines held its general membership meeting on 30 August 2023, at Escolta Lucky Chinatown Hotel. The event aimed to delve into the dynamic interplay between artificial intelligence and the media landscape. UPMG President Barbie L. Atienza set the tone for the day's discussions: learning from UPMG members who had recently participated at the 74th World News Media Congress on 28-30 in Taipei, Taiwan. Sherly O. Baula, UPMG Treasurer and Credit and Collection Manager of Chinese Commercial News, shed light on the pros and cons of AI integration in newsrooms, citing concerns on job displacement and authenticity on one hand, while also highlighting AI's potential to streamline newsroom processes and innovate content creation, such as AI-generated listicles engaging animated videos. A notable example she cited was the debut of the AI-generated news anchor named "Fedha" on a Kuwaiti news channel. Baula's also unpacked policies and rules that now govern AI in newsrooms worldwide, touching on issues such as transparency, ethics, data quality, verification methods, staff expertise and collaborations between data scientists and journalists. One key concern was restoring public trust, particularly given AI's potential to disseminate misinformation through tools like deepfakes. Baula proposed a robust framework for newsrooms, including AI usage guidelines, transparent labeling of AI-generated content, human oversight and rigorous fact-checking by seasoned news editors. In conclusion, Baula stressed that AI remains an evolving technology, requiring the integration of human oversight to balance creative and ethical dimensions of news production. Jay Sarmiento, Vice-President of UPMG, and Sales & Marketing Director of Philstar Media Group, shared his insights on a range of business models that news outlets can leverage amid the AI revolution. She underscored the potential for AI to enhance operations rather than supplant traditional journalism. With decentralization of the web gaining momentum, Sarmiento emphasized the need to refine business models and urged news organizations to embrace AI's transformative potential and chart strategies beyond established Big Tech, as this approach could yield untapped intellectual property revenue streams. Sarmiento introduced a spectrum of 15 business models that news companies could consider, ranging from paid content provision to data mining and affiliate marketing. News companies should capitalize on their unique strengths to select three models that align with their core competencies, thereby creating fresh revenue streams, she said. Angel V. Guerrero, UPMG Board Secretary and Publisher of Adobo Magazine, closed the event by noting that the meeting was a shared journey of exploration, learning and empowerment for UPMG members. Upping the ante
Beijing always ups the ante when it senses that its rival for the region’s security, the United States, is making its move to challenge its dominance in the region, which was probably how the 10-dash line came to be. With the release of the new map showing an expanded “historical” claim that included parts of India, China issued a strong criticism of the Americans with Senior Col. Wu Qian, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defense, saying the US should “stop meddling in the South China Sea issue, stop sowing discord and fanning the flames, and stop disrupting regional peace and stability.” The comment was in response to US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III’s statement that “the 2016 Arbitral Tribunal ruling is binding on all parties” and “the Mutual Defense Treaty extends to Philippine public vessels, aircraft and armed forces — to include those of its Coast Guard — in the Pacific, including in the South China Sea.” Vice Admiral Karl Thomas, commander of the US Navy’s Seventh Fleet, backed the American position, saying the recent use of a water cannon by China’s Coast Guard against a Philippine vessel “must be challenged and checked.” He also “assured the Philippines of US backing.” Wu reiterated China’s position that the Philippines infringed on its sovereignty and violated the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea to justify the China Coast Guard’s action. “We hope regional countries can stay vigilant, faithfully implement the DoC, and work with the Chinese side to maintain peace and stability in the region. The Chinese military will resolutely safeguard China’s national sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, as well as peace and stability in the South China Sea,” the spokesperson stressed. The increasing challenge from China should be matched by the US, according to geopolitical experts. A former Pentagon official, Michael Rubin, suggested the “reflagging” of islands in the disputed areas to send a clear message to China. Rubin recalled an incident in 1987 when President Ronald Reagan ordered the reflagging of nearly a dozen Kuwaiti tankers to stop Iran from attacking them to force the emirate to cease its trade with and loans to Iraq. “Reagan ignored criticism that reflagging the tankers could embroil the United States in war because he understood that at stake were not only Kuwait’s oil exports but also freedom of navigation and the rules-based order,” Rubin explained. He said that while skirmishes did occur, “once the ayatollahs understood Reagan stood firm, Iranian forces suspended their provocations.” Rubin believes that since China challenges the freedom of navigation and the broader liberal order, “perhaps the US could take a page from Reagan’s playbook and reflag not ships but rather some of the rocks, reefs, and atolls over which China now erroneously claims sovereignty.” The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague invalidated in 2016 the historical claim of China through its nine-dash line as being without basis. The root of the claim was a 1947 map the authenticity of which historians dismissed. “That Beijing bases its claim on supposed historic Chinese fishing activity further displays the emptiness of the Chinese Communist Party’s logic. After all, Vietnamese, Taiwanese, Malay, Filipino and Indonesian fishermen also plied the same waters and perhaps even some closer to China,” Rubin noted. “Regardless, using the fictional map, China, in one fell swoop, claimed the bulk of the South China Sea and its considerable fishing and oil reserves,” he said. His proposal would be based on “leases drawn between the US government and its regional partners.” The leases would be backed by the arbitral award. “While the current US legal position supports the 2016 Hague tribunal judgment that finds no power can legally exercise sovereignty over disputed territories, the White House might reconsider this (stance),” Rubin added. But Rubin admitted that a greater problem might be the unwillingness of the regional states to offer leases. The proposal breaks with the usual conventions in the settling of disputes. Americans have a term for that, however: “It’s so crazy, it just might work.” The post Upping the ante appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Rapper Eminem tells Ramaswamy to drop the mic, quit playing songs
Rap star Eminem has formally asked Republican presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy to stop using his music on the campaign trail, according to a letter made public on Monday. A video of Ramaswamy, who is enjoying a surge in the Republican primary race, singing along to Eminem's "Lose Yourself" at the Iowa State Fair went viral earlier this month. In a letter first reported by the Daily Mail, the authenticity of which was confirmed by AFP, music licenser Broadcast Music Inc. stated that it had received an official request from Eminem demanding that the 38-year-old candidate no longer use his music. Ramaswamy, who likens himself to "Trump 2.0," has risen surprisingly to third place among Republicans who are in the running for the 2024 presidential primary elections. As an undergraduate at Harvard, his side hustle was rapping libertarian-minded lyrics with the stage name "Da Vek." "If you think debater-extraordinaire Vivek G. Ramaswamy '07 is intense, you obviously haven't met Da Vek," The Crimson, Harvard's student newspaper, humorously noted in 2006. During the last two elections, well-known artists including Pharrell Williams, Rihanna, Aerosmith, and Adele -- as well as heirs of Prince -- complained that their songs were played at Donald Trump rallies without their permission. The Rolling Stones even threatened to sue if the Trump campaign continued to use the British group's classic hit "You Can't Always Get What You Want." Designer Jie -jie Aisa on muse Nikki de Moura
So far, the city of Cagayan de Oro in Mindanao has produced two beauties of international caliber: Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach and Miss InterContinental 2021 Cinderella Faye Elle “Cindy” Obeñita. Hoping to make it a Beauty Queen Trinity is Nikki Advincula de Moura, the newly crowned Miss Grand Philippines who will compete for the global title in Vietnam come October. [caption id="attachment_173643" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Miss Grand Philippines 2023 Nikki de Moura, wearing a terno by Jie-jie Aisa, in front of the Saint Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral in Cagayan de Oro. | Photograph Courtesy of James Paculba.[/caption] There are great expectations that De Moura, who is of exquisite mix of Brazilian and Filipino blood, will finally snatch the elusive Miss Grand International crown. Helping her to achieve this feat is her glam team from Cebu and her beauty camp in her native CDO. At the national finals, De Moura wore a creation by Eclectic Image Fashion Studio by Jie-jie Aisa for the national costume competition. It was called “Oportunidad de Oro” or “Golden Opportunities,” inspired by the city’s mythical golden fish which is believed to be its protector. It was one of the top five in the category. For her homecoming after her victory, De Moura once again wore a Jie-jie Aisa creation. “The gown beautifully blends two symbolic colors — green, representing unity and #KaubanTaUY, and gold, paying homage to CDO’s renowned title as the City of Golden Friendship,” the designer noted. “A true embodiment of grace and local pride, Nikki shines bright during her homecoming motorcade, capturing hearts of Kagay-anons and embodying the essence of this remarkable city. Thank you to LGU-CDO headed by Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy for making this possible.” Incidentally, the bustling city is in the midst of celebrating its Higalaay Festival, a major highlight of which is the Mindanao Fashion Summit from 23 to 25 August at the Ayala Centrio Mall. As the president of the Designer’s Assembly, Jie-jie will lead his group’s presentation on the second day, 24 August. “As the president, my key duties and responsibilities encompass leading and guiding the organization’s strategic direction, fostering a collaborative environment among budding designers, overseeing project initiatives, coordinating events and workshops and representing the interests of our members within the design community,” the genial designer said. “I am dedicated to ensuring the growth and success of our group by nurturing creativity, facilitating skill development and promoting meaningful engagement within the design industry.” On the eve of the 12th Mindanao Fashion Summit, the designer, who considers Gil Macaiba III, the late Benjie S. Manuel and Cary Santiago as influences, recounts his collaborative relationship with his muse, De Moura. Origins “My acquaintance with Nikki de Moura developed through mutual connections within the fashion and pageant industry. Our paths crossed after a local beauty camp in Cebu City introduced her to our camp in Cagayan de Oro City, the #TeamAmega. Since I am the official designer of our beauty camp, I had the opportunity to design her creative national costume as well as her outfits during her homecoming. “The idea of a creative collaboration for her gowns/outfits emerged organically from recognizing the synergy between our camp’s visions, we jointly initiated the collaboration, fueled by a shared passion for crafting unique and captivating ensembles that would resonate with her style and my design expertise.” Muse “Nikki exemplifies the essence of a stunning Jie-jie Aisa muse through her remarkable blend of grace, confidence and distinctive style. Her ability to effortlessly carry both traditional and contemporary ensembles reflects the dynamic spirit of the Jie-jie Aisa brand. Nikki’s poise and fashion-forward sensibilities resonate with the brand’s commitment to celebrating cultural heritage while embracing modern aesthetics. As a local fashion designer, collaborating with such a muse has been an inspiring journey, elevating my creations to new heights of elegance and sophistication.” Collaborations “Throughout the collaboration between myself as a local fashion designer and Nikki, we found common ground in our enthusiasm for integrating indigenous design elements into the collection. However, there were nuanced differences in our visions, particularly concerning the color palette’s vibrancy and the extent of embellishments. By fostering open dialogue and embracing a spirit of mutual respect, we arrived at a compromise that elegantly balanced the client’s preference for a more subdued palette with my inclination for bolder accents. This harmonious negotiation resulted in a collection that seamlessly reflects both Nikki’s refined taste and my artistic perspective.” Pride “I am immensely proud of Nikki’s accomplishments, both as Miss Teen Philippines 2019 and more recently as Miss Grand Philippines 2023. These achievements reflect not only her individual dedication and perseverance but also the embodiment of our nation’s beauty, talent and grace on esteemed platforms. Nikki’s success brings honor not just to herself but also to the Philippines, and it is a privilege to have contributed to my journey as a local fashion designer. Her victories inspire me to continue creating designs that complement and enhance the remarkable qualities of individuals like Nikki.” Preparations “From our perspective, the entire #TeamAmega is wholeheartedly committed to providing unwavering support to Nikki during her time in Vietnam. As for her national costume, we are awaiting confirmation from the Miss Grand Philippines Organization regarding my potential involvement in designing her ensemble. Rest assured we are eagerly prepared to contribute our expertise to ensure her representation is nothing short of exceptional.” Challenges “As a designer, crafting pageant gowns presents a unique set of challenges that require a delicate balance between artistic expression and meeting specific criteria. Ensuring that the gown captures the contestant’s individuality while aligning with the pageant’s theme and standards demands meticulous attention to detail. “Additionally, incorporating elements that reflect cultural authenticity and modern aesthetics requires thoughtful navigation. The challenge lies in harmonizing these diverse aspects to create a gown that not only enhances the contestant’s beauty and confidence but also makes a lasting impression on the judges and audience.” “Working with beauty queens brings its own distinct dynamic compared to designing for everyday women. Beauty queens possess a heightened sense of stage presence and a requirement for gowns that accentuate their elegance under the spotlight. The meticulous attention to fit, silhouette and materials is magnified.” The post Designer Jie -jie Aisa on muse Nikki de Moura appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
