Sara, Teodoro to inspect Palaro site
by Neil Alcober Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte, together with Marikina City Mayor Marcelino Teodoro, will conduct an ocular inspection next week, 21 July, to determine the city’s readiness in hosting this year’s Palarong Pambansa. “We’re working doubly hard to prepare all the facilities based on the specifications and standards required by the technical working group of the Palarong Pambansa and, at the same time, to simply validate all the preparations are in place,” Teodoro told this reporter in an interview on Thursday. “We’re also hoping by that period the oval track of the city is already finished and complete,” the Marikina mayor added. Teodoro also said that they hired a Malaysian consultant to inspect all the facilities and to provide specifications requirement. “We’re almost 100 percent ready for the Palarong Pambansa 2023. But, of course, there are adjustments. It’s a working progress in terms of the number of delegates that will be coming because clusters 1 and 2 are still ongoing — there are still pre-qualifying games being done for Central Luzon, and we’re waiting for that,” the mayor added. Teodoro also assured that the minimum public health standards will be strictly implemented during the conduct of the said sporting event. “We’re establishing medical stations as well as treatment medical facilities,” he said. Teodoro also said that the city government has set aside funding for the athletes who sustained injuries during the games and for their hospitalization in case they get infected with Covid-19. “This is the first undertaking in the Palarong Pambansa that the local government will be providing fund in the amount of P5 million for injuries and medical contingency of the athletes,” he said, adding that they signed an agreement with various hospitals in the city. Teodoro also said that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will be attending the opening ceremony. The Eastern Police District, headed by P/Brig. Gen. Wilson Asueta, has already set up security measures to ensure public safety and peace and order during the conduct of this year’s sporting event. “We have already coordinated with the Philippine National Police. EPD Director General Asueta was with us in the meeting for the final security arrangement,” Teodoro said. “They will also augment our security personnel in the city as well as for the traffic management. They will be assigning some PNP personnel to manage traffic during the conduct of the Palarong Pambansa,” the mayor added. The PNP, according to Teodoro, has also tightened its VIPs security arrangements. “They did a threat assessment and found no major problem ensuring that no untoward incident will happen,” he said. There will be side events like dragon boat competition and e-games such as mobile legend during the conduct of the Palarong Pambansa, Teodoro said. The mayor added that there will be a closing concert to be held at the Marikina Sports Complex, solidarity meeting for all the regions, and a three-night mayors’ night. This year’s Palarong Pambansa 2023 will kick off on 31 July 2023 at the Marikina Sports Center. This will be followed by actual games (games proper) on 1-5 August at the assigned playing venues until its closing ceremonies on 5 August. This year, the Palarong Pambansa will feature a total of 37 sports including athletics, swimming, basketball, volleyball, football and taekwondo. The games are expected to draw over 10,000 athletes from all over the Philippines. The post Sara, Teodoro to inspect Palaro site appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Pinoy surfer Casugay receives international Fair Play award
Surfer Roger Casugay was honored with the Pierre de Coubertin Act of Fair Play Award by the Comitee International du Fair-Play (International Fair Play Committee) for his heroic deed during the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. The men’s longboard gold medalist in the 30th edition of the biennial meet hosted by the country became the first Filipino to receive the prestigious sportsmanship award named after the father of the international Olympic movement. International Surfing Association (ISA) Membership and Development Manager Alex Reynolds informed the United Philippine Surfing Association of Casugay’s achievement Tuesday. The award will be officially handed to Casugay on October 27. He is expected to fly to Monaco to personally receive the award, should the crisis permit. Casugay also has an option to receive the award virtually. The 26-year old Casugay, a native of San Fernando, La Union drew headlines for his heroic act of saving Indonesian competitor Arip Nurhidayat, who broke his ankle leash and was swept by giant waves. Organizers of the surfing event decided to rerun the competition as Casugay went on to win the gold medal. “We are very proud of Roger because he has truly exemplified the true meaning of being a Filipino and a sportsman,” said Philippine Sports Commission Chairman and 30th SEAG Chef de Mission William ‘Butch’ Ramirez in a statement. “Above all, it is a more fulfilling achievement to be recognized for character than skills and achievements. It shows who we are as people and as a nation,” added the PSC Chief. UPSA President Dr. Jose Raul Canlas also expressed pride on Casugay’s recognition. “It is nice to recognize an athlete not only for his athletic skills but also for his humanity. Holding surfing during the Southeast Asian Games is a milestone event. It paved the way for the ISA to recognize the region and allowed Roger to be also recognized,” he said. Casugay was the flag bearer and recipient of the “Fair Play” award during the SEA Games closing ceremonies held in New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac. Filipino surfers finished as overall champions in the sports’ SEA Games debut with two gold, two silver and three bronze medals......»»

UAAP Season 82 celebrates unity and sportsmanship in virtual closing ceremony
Despite an abrupt end to UAAP Season 82 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the country’s premier collegiate league will officially wrap up the season on a high note with a virtual closing ceremony that will celebrate unity and sportsmanship in the entire UAAP community. The special online event, hosted by Mico Halili and Denice Dinsay of ABS-CBN Sports, will go live on July 25 (Saturday) at 4 pm on the ABS-CBN Sports website (sports.abs-cbn.com), Facebook, and YouTube accounts, with delayed telecast on LIGA cable sports channel at 7 pm. The closing ceremony will be a culmination of the first and second semester UAAP sports, highlighting the success and hard work of the eight member schools while also putting the spotlight on the athletes who were unable to finish their season due to the cancelation of the games. “Lalabas 'yun doon sa closing ceremonies, just to highlight na, one, as a community, as a nation, we are here to help everyone, that's one. And two, itong mga atleta na 'to na mga hindi nakapaglaro or natapos, they are part of Season 82," said UAAP Season 82 president Em Fernandez of host school Ateneo de Manila University in an interview with ABS-CBN News. UAAP announced the cancelation of Season 82 on April 7 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Second semester sports such as volleyball, football, baseball, softball, track and field, lawn tennis, and 3x3 basketball were not completed or did not start at all. The UAAP will also be awarding UST as general champions for both the high school and seniors divisions. This is the sixth straight overall championship for the Tiger Cubs and fourth straight for the Growling Tigers. Also set to receive their awards are the Season 82 MVPs for high school and college, while selected athlete-scholars from the different universities will also be recognized. The league, however, will be unable to award an Athlete of the Year for this season. The online gathering, according to ABS-CBN Integrated Sports head Dino Laurena, will celebrate the dedication of all athletes and the efforts of the entire UAAP community, noting that it has always been their mission in ABS-CBN Sports to honor and pay tribute to the work and dedication of athletes, no matter what the circumstances or challenges the sports organization is confronting. “ABS-CBN Sports remains faithful to its advocacy of promoting the values that sports teaches all of us. It is in this light that we want to pay tribute to our athletes who put in months of sacrifice and preparation to be able to play at a high level in the UAAP. We hope they stay hungry and passionate about the game they love, and we cannot wait to see them playing again,” he said. Spicing up the celebration are feature performances by ABS-CBN artists Ylona Garcia and Inigo Pascual. Sponge Cola and Itchyworms, the Pinoy rock bands that performed the official UAAP Season 82 anthem “Ang Ating Tagumpay” at the opening ceremony, will also make a special appearance. Sticking to Season 82’s theme of “All For More,” the UAAP will also recognize the efforts of schools and athletes by honoring those who have done charity work during the pandemic. Fans will also be able to look back at last season’s game highlights as well as hear from some of their favorite players. To formally symbolize the end of UAAP Season 82, there will be a virtual turning over of hosting duties of Ateneo to its rival school De La Salle University for Season 83. ABS-CBN Sports has been the official broadcaster of the UAAP since 2000. Together, they have championed sports among the Filipino youth, have given a break to many young, talented athletes, and strengthened the local sports community in the past two decades. Celebrate sports culture in the Philippines with Kapamilya sports fans by watching the UAAP Season 82 closing ceremony on July 25 (Saturday) at 4 pm on the ABS-CBN Sports website (sports.abs-cbn.com) and ABS-CBN Sports Facebook and YouTube accounts. UAAP s super seniors to be feted in Season 82 online closing ceremony
UAAP Season 82 officially comes to a close on July 25. There, the league pushes through with closing ceremonies for its most recent tournament cut short due to the continuing COVID-19 crisis. Let’s remember and reminisce #UAAPSeason82 with the Closing Ceremony#AllForMore 4pm, July 25 on @abscbnsports’ online platforms pic.twitter.com/ZbOPjXojLB — The UAAP (@uaap_official) July 15, 2020 There, champions and individual awardees from first semester sports would be celebrated once more. Student-athletes from the second semester sports would not be getting left behind, however. In particular, so-called super seniors whose campaigns were cut short by the pandemic would also be recognized in the event to be shown on ABS-CBN Sports' online platforms. For that, they are nothing but grateful. "Sobrang saya kasi, isipin mo, yung buong taon na pinaghirapan mo, may kapalit pa rin kahit ganito ang nangyari," Ricky Marcos, libero of two-time defending champion National University said in The Prospects Pod last Friday. "Nagpapasalamat kami." Diego Lozano, first baseman of still-reigning baseball king De La Salle University could only agree. "I'm happy the UAAP decided to do this because it shows their support for the seniors who dedicated five years to play the sport they love," he said. He then continued, "This also shows appreciation of the fact that living the student-athlete life is not easy because you have to have so many sacrifices." Indeed, a rare occurrence that affected all is more than enough reason for a rare citation to appreciate all. For super seniors such as the University of the Philippines booter Miggy Clarino, that award, even if it is not the championship they all hope for, is still to be treasured. As he put it, "Masaya, siyempre, kasi as seniors, deserve naman naming makakuha ng kahit medal man lang kasi isa kami sa mga naging role models para sa mga bata sa sports namin." Editor's Note: The UAAP Season 82 Closing Ceremony will air July 25, Saturday, 7 pm and July 26, 4:30 pm on LIGA on SkyCable channel 86, LIGA HD on SkyCable 183, sports.abs-cbn.com, Facebook and YouTube --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
UST still sits on the general championship throne in UAAP 82
University of Sto. Tomas still stands strong as the general champion in both Seniors and Juniors as it topped the other seven member-schools in the shortened Season 82. "I think, in their last count, sila ang made-declare na general champions," outgoing league president Em Fernandez of Ateneo de Manila University said in the Philippine Sportswriters Association online forum on Tuesday. "I do believe they were leading." Fernandez then went on to say that 21 of 31 championships were already awarded in the Seniors while all but two were won in the Juniors. That means that the leader in the medal tally would be named general champion in virtual closing ceremonies a month from now - and the leader in both Seniors and Juniors is UST. Meanwhile, there would not be an Athlete of the Year in the shortened Season 83. "There won't be any Athlete of the Year. That has been recommended by the BMD (Board of Managing Directors) and approved by the BOT (Board of Trustees)," Fernandez said. The most recent Athletes of the Year were UST's Sisi Rondina and Ateneo's Jessie King Lacuna for the Seniors as well as Kai Sotto and Philip Joaquin Santos, both Blue Eaglets, for the Juniors. —— Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
